Ram Promaster problems
Ram Trucks, stylized as RAM and formerly known as the Ram Truck Division (of Chrysler), is an American brand of light to mid-weight trucks and other commercial vehicles, and a division of Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). It was established in a spin-off from Dodge in 2010 using the name of the Ram pickup line of trucks. Ram Trucks' logo was originally used as Dodge's logo. Ram 1500 "Classic" trucks are made at the Warren Truck Plant in Warren, Michigan, United States, and at the Saltillo plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. New series Ram 1500 pickups are made at Sterling Heights Assembly in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Since its inception, the brand has used the slogan "Guts. Glory. Ram."
Background
Prior to the 1970s, Dodge had maintained a separate marque for trucks, Fargo Trucks, primarily for use outside the United States. After that point, all trucks made by Chrysler were distributed under the Dodge marque.
In June 2009, when Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Fiat Group received a 20% stake in Chrysler Group LLC and Sergio Marchionne was appointed CEO, replacing CEO Robert Nardelli. On June 10 that year, substantially all of Chrysler's assets were sold to "New Chrysler," organized as Chrysler Group LLC. The federal government provided support for the deal with US$8 billion in financing at near 21%. Under CEO Marchionne, "World Class Manufacturing" or WCM, a system of thorough manufacturing quality, was introduced and several products re-launched with quality and luxury. The Ram, Jeep, Dodge, SRT and Chrysler divisions were separated to focus on their own identity and brands.
Ram Trucks was established as a division of Chrysler in 2010, as a spin-off from Dodge, and using the name of the Dodge Ram line of pickups that is now sold under the Ram banner. According to Chrysler, the Ram Trucks brand will concentrate on "real truck customers," rather than casual truck buyers who buy trucks for image or style.
The Fiat Ducato cargo van design has been adopted and is sold as the Ram ProMaster in North American markets, filling the gap created when Daimler ended production of the Dodge Sprinter in 2008. The goal was to increase truck sales "from today's 280,000 to 415,000 by 2014."
Executives at Chrysler have stated their intention to compete in the semi-trailer truck category with Ram, a possibility that is aided by Fiat's ownership of Iveco and an already available network of Dodge dealers. Ram trucks are marketed separately from Dodge cars; former Ram Division President Fred Diaz stated, "Ram trucks are not a Dodge model. Ram will always be 'vinned' (Vehicle Identification Number) as a Ram. We need to continue to market as Ram so Dodge can have a different brand identity: hip, cool, young, energetic. That will not fit the campaign for truck buyers. The two should have distinct themes."
On July 21, 2011, Fiat bought the Chrysler shares held by the U.S. Treasury, increasing its stake in the company.
In April 2013, Diaz left Ram Trucks to serve as vice president of Nissan's divisional sales and marketing. He was replaced by Reid Bigland.
Fiat Chrysler formed as a new corporate entity in January 2014.
In August 2014, Ram Trucks CEO Reid Bigland was tapped to lead the Alfa Romeo brand in North America. It was announced that the new head of the Ram Trucks brand would be longtime Chrysler employee Robert Hegbloom, who joined Chrysler in 1986 and had been a director for Dodge. In October 2018, Bigland was promoted to CEO of Ram Trucks. Shortly thereafter, he discovered that the division had been misreporting sales figures and turned over that information to the U.S. government for investigation. Allegedly, FCA cut his bonuses in retaliation, which resulted in Bigland filing a whistleblower lawsuit against FCA. In March 2020, Bigland announced his resignation.
Stellantis formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group.
The Ram brand logo features the head of a ram, formerly the logo used by Dodge.

Per RepairPal, the Ram ProMaster reliability score is a two out of five, which is pretty poor. Not to mention, the average annual cost of repairs is $1,072. This can cause concern for some who are in the market for a campervan — especially if they will be living in it full-time.
What is the life expectancy of a Ram ProMaster?
Life Expectancy
However, consumers report that the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster regularly last until 150,000 – 200,000 miles without major engine problems. And the Mercedes Sprinter regularly lasts anywhere between 250,000 and up to 600,000 miles without significant engine problems.
What is the transmission problem with the Ram ProMaster?
The automaker is recalling an estimated 165,503 2019-2021 Ram ProMaster vehicles equipped with a 62TE transmission because the park pawl may not fully engage the park gear due to debris inside the transmission. This scenario can result in vehicle rollaway, which increases the likelihood of a crash.

- VIN: 3C6LRVBG5ME
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While preparing for a trip, I noticed the upper kitchen cabinetry is detaching from the ceiling and in danger of falling. This section is part of the cabinetry housing the microwave. The detaching cabinet has a glass plate attached to the bottom as a heat guard for the stove directly below it. The stove also has a glass top. It has the potential to injury an occupant both by its weight and glass breakage during travel or when stationary. Occupants can be sitting directly across from the cabinet on the couch which has seat belts. There is a 16 inch aisle between the stove top and the edge of the couch. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate type of safety issue for your agency, but I felt it could surely injure occupants in the kitchen area.

Ram Promaster 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 3C6LRVBG3NE
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While cruising at highway speed with adaptive cruise control enabled, the vehicle will incorrectly detect traffic/speed signs and will rapidly decelerate on a highway in traffic. I believe that the message that displays after detecting the new speed limit (improperly based on a sign other than a highway speed limit sign) without giving the option to reject using the "resume" button before. There is an option to disable traffic/speed sign detection, but that must be manually disabled in software every time the vehicle is re-started. Adjustment of the speed during adaptive cruise control based on traffic/speed signs should be disabled for safety. It's fine to have the speed limit displayed on the dash, but dangerous to have the vehicle adjust speed on its own without sufficient warning, or at all. I would like to request that RAM be directed to disable the software connection between traffic/speed sign detection and the adaptive cruise control so that, just like regular cruise control, the operator chooses the vehicle's speed. Note that this issue has happened many times since I've owned the vehicle, which was purchased as new, but I am now complaining to NHTSA because I experienced multiple incidents on my most recent trip that might have risked a rear-end collision from a vehicle following me when deceleration occurred.
Ram Promaster 2021
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG8ME
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The component that failed/malfunctioned is the CV axle, the part is no longer available for inspection. The safety risk posed is loss of control of the vehicle, subsequent damage to other vital steering and stability parts such as the wheel bearings, axles, alignment, and lower ball joint. The problem has been confirmed by a RAM dealership, and corrected under an extended warranty. The component has not been inspected outside of the RAM dealership technicians and potentially the warranty provider. There were no warning lights or indicators from the computer/OBD. Physical symptoms and signs included uncontrollable vehicle shaking/vibration, and difficulty maintaining control at high speeds. Other symptoms/signs may include the frequent need for realignment, and unique tire tread wear patterns. Symptoms appeared around 58,000 original miles. With a fleet of these vans, this problem has been noted more than once.
Ram Promaster 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 3C6TRVAG6KE
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Ram Promaster 1500. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the RPM’s increased, but the vehicle hesitated to respond. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the failure could not be replicated. Additionally, the contact stated while driving 65-70 MPH, the transmission downshifted to 2nd gear and remained stuck in 2nd gear. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to drive to the workplace, and the contact added transmission fluid to the vehicle. The contact resumed driving; however, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding sound. The contact stated upon returning to the workplace, the contact noticed that the transmission fluid had leaked into the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer, Future Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Concord (2121 Diamond Blvd, Concord, CA 94520), where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under the transmission warranty because the contact had personally replaced the transmission fluid and filters. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was not related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V301000 (Power Train); and provided an estimate for the repair. The vehicle was not repaired and remained with the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000.
Ram Promaster 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG1NE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes failed (for the 4th or 5th time) while driving on the highway after approximately two hours. While traveling approximately 55mph on the highway (I do not drive engaging the brakes unless stopping) the Notice Service Braking System alert indicated on the dash. When I went to push in the brakes, they went to the floor, grinding and "pulsing" in and out as I attempted to stop. Please note that this issue has happened 3-4 times in the past and the dealership assures me this is normal. I was able to successfully get the vehicle to a dealership. THEY SAID THE STORED CODES MEANT NOTHING because they were stored and not active (see attached)That dealership stated they could not find anything wrong and therefore nothing to fix. I then drove the vehicle another two hours and the same thing happened. I got the vehicle to another dealership where it is now until they remedy the situation. In addition, when starting the vehicle from a cold state, the brakes often go to the floor and grind. Again, the dealership assures me this is 'normal' and to simply pump the brakes to remove excess air. This is a new vehicle with less than 8k miles, purchased new and has been occurring since purchased.

I drove it that way for over a year. 6 months ago my transmission would not stay in gear, and in calling Hilltop was told the newer trans was not under warranty. I was advised by Warner Transmission that my issue might be caused by a clogged trans fluid. I did a trans fluid and filter replacement. I had the truck towed to their Concord Ca dealer, who told me I was under warranty, but because changed the trans fluid and filter, I had void the warranty. The recall calls for Trans Replacement. I spoke to a Recall manager regarding the trans and the issues I had right after. They agreed the truck is under recall. When calling dealer with this information, they refused to accept

- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-13
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 3C6LRVDG7NE
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On 11/2022 my company purchased a 2023 Dodge Promaster Work Van from a dealership brand new. In March 2023 one of my employees was driving the vehicle and there was an electrical issue which caused the breaks to not respond, and we rear ended a car which then hit the car in front of them. We were only going around 10-20 MPH as we were coming to a red light and could not stop. We requested an investigation into the source of the issue as it should not be out fault that a brand new car's breaks failed. Chrysler corporate sent someone to look at the van. They concluded that after market LEDs were installed in the back of the van improperly, and it caused a short in the electrical system which caused the breaks to fail. Chrysler Corporate said it was not their issue and closed the case. After looking at pictures from before we ever even looked at the van I saw that the LEDs were already there. The dealership admitted in email that the LEDs were in the van before we even took it off the lot. I told my insurance company this, but they did not pursue it leaving the liability on us. My insurance then dropped us as a customer. The dealership stated in email they fixed the LED lights and everything works once again. We take the van and begin using it again. Fast forward to March 2024, a different worker is driving the same van and they are again coming to a red light. The breaks fail once again. This time the breaks were going to the ground and not slowing the van down at all. My worker hits another car and then turns off and hits a fence so he does not hit anyone else in the road. This time I send my van to my local certified Chrysler dealership to have it sit there as I will initiate an inspection once again. After another month or so they finally inspect it around April 20th. This time after the inspection finishes, but does not give me a reason just meta data. You can see we used the breaks, but the speed did not slow down. This van has been a nightmare.

- Summary: From purchase the UConnect system has faulted out and have effected items like Navigation, etc but wasn't a real problem. On 7/18 I had my dealer perform recall # 66B/NHTSA 24V-436 On 7/20 the UConnect system began faulting out but this time it started Disabling the Automatic Emergency Braking while driving, Disabled the parking brake when it was set, Indicated that various lights were not working when they were. The dealership worked on it extensively with the Corp service system reflashing the system, etc and it worked Ok for about 100 miles when the above problems have all started again. I have reviewed several social media sites and notice the UConeect system is very problematic. I am concerned most about the UConnect system turning off what I consider very important safety functions and while this seems to be a long ongoing problem RAM CORP SERVICE doesn't seem to be able to correct it The local Dealership has been great to work with but can only do what CORP tells them to do
