2021 Ram Promaster problems
Ram Trucks, stylized as RAM and formerly known as the Ram Truck Division (of Chrysler), is an American brand of light to mid-weight trucks and other commercial vehicles, and a division of Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). It was established in a spin-off from Dodge in 2010 using the name of the Ram pickup line of trucks. Ram Trucks' logo was originally used as Dodge's logo. Ram 1500 "Classic" trucks are made at the Warren Truck Plant in Warren, Michigan, United States, and at the Saltillo plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. New series Ram 1500 pickups are made at Sterling Heights Assembly in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Since its inception, the brand has used the slogan "Guts. Glory. Ram."
Background
Prior to the 1970s, Dodge had maintained a separate marque for trucks, Fargo Trucks, primarily for use outside the United States. After that point, all trucks made by Chrysler were distributed under the Dodge marque.
In June 2009, when Chrysler emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Fiat Group received a 20% stake in Chrysler Group LLC and Sergio Marchionne was appointed CEO, replacing CEO Robert Nardelli. On June 10 that year, substantially all of Chrysler's assets were sold to "New Chrysler," organized as Chrysler Group LLC. The federal government provided support for the deal with US$8 billion in financing at near 21%. Under CEO Marchionne, "World Class Manufacturing" or WCM, a system of thorough manufacturing quality, was introduced and several products re-launched with quality and luxury. The Ram, Jeep, Dodge, SRT and Chrysler divisions were separated to focus on their own identity and brands.
Ram Trucks was established as a division of Chrysler in 2010, as a spin-off from Dodge, and using the name of the Dodge Ram line of pickups that is now sold under the Ram banner. According to Chrysler, the Ram Trucks brand will concentrate on "real truck customers," rather than casual truck buyers who buy trucks for image or style.
The Fiat Ducato cargo van design has been adopted and is sold as the Ram ProMaster in North American markets, filling the gap created when Daimler ended production of the Dodge Sprinter in 2008. The goal was to increase truck sales "from today's 280,000 to 415,000 by 2014."
Executives at Chrysler have stated their intention to compete in the semi-trailer truck category with Ram, a possibility that is aided by Fiat's ownership of Iveco and an already available network of Dodge dealers. Ram trucks are marketed separately from Dodge cars; former Ram Division President Fred Diaz stated, "Ram trucks are not a Dodge model. Ram will always be 'vinned' (Vehicle Identification Number) as a Ram. We need to continue to market as Ram so Dodge can have a different brand identity: hip, cool, young, energetic. That will not fit the campaign for truck buyers. The two should have distinct themes."
On July 21, 2011, Fiat bought the Chrysler shares held by the U.S. Treasury, increasing its stake in the company.
In April 2013, Diaz left Ram Trucks to serve as vice president of Nissan's divisional sales and marketing. He was replaced by Reid Bigland.
Fiat Chrysler formed as a new corporate entity in January 2014.
In August 2014, Ram Trucks CEO Reid Bigland was tapped to lead the Alfa Romeo brand in North America. It was announced that the new head of the Ram Trucks brand would be longtime Chrysler employee Robert Hegbloom, who joined Chrysler in 1986 and had been a director for Dodge. In October 2018, Bigland was promoted to CEO of Ram Trucks. Shortly thereafter, he discovered that the division had been misreporting sales figures and turned over that information to the U.S. government for investigation. Allegedly, FCA cut his bonuses in retaliation, which resulted in Bigland filing a whistleblower lawsuit against FCA. In March 2020, Bigland announced his resignation.
Stellantis formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler merged with the French PSA Group.
The Ram brand logo features the head of a ram, formerly the logo used by Dodge.

Common 2021 Ram Promaster problems
Common Problems with the Ram Promaster 2021:
- Pulling to the Left: Some owners have reported that their 2021 Ram Promaster pulls to the left, even after multiple alignments by the local Dodge service shop. The issue has been attributed to the vehicle coming from the factory out of line, as if it had been in a wreck.
- Transmission Issues: The 2019-2021 Ram ProMaster has been recalled for a transmission issue that can cause a potential rollaway problem. The issue affects an estimated 165,503 vehicles equipped with a 62TE transmission. The automaker is recalling these vehicles to update the powertrain control module software and inspect and replace, as necessary, the transmission or components within the transmission.
- Exterior Lighting Issues: The 2019-2021 Ram ProMaster has been recalled due to a potential issue with the turn signal lights. If one or both turn signal lights fail, the flashing rate may not change to warn the driver of the failure. This can increase the risk of a crash, as the driver may be unaware that the turn signals are not signaling their intentions to other drivers.
- Battery Issues: The 2022-2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicles (PHEV) have been recalled due to a battery issue where the high voltage (HV) battery pack assembly was built with incorrect fasteners to secure the 200-amp fuse, which can generate excessive heat. This can cause the fuse to fail and result in a loss of drive power, increasing the chances of a collision.
These issues are based on complaints from owners of the 2021 Ram Promaster and should be taken into consideration when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the vehicle's performance can help identify and address these issues in a timely manner.

- Summary: While preparing for a trip, I noticed the upper kitchen cabinetry is detaching from the ceiling and in danger of falling. This section is part of the cabinetry housing the microwave. The detaching cabinet has a glass plate attached to the bottom as a heat guard for the stove directly below it. The stove also has a glass top. It has the potential to injury an occupant both by its weight and glass breakage during travel or when stationary. Occupants can be sitting directly across from the cabinet on the couch which has seat belts. There is a 16 inch aisle between the stove top and the edge of the couch. I'm not sure if this is the appropriate type of safety issue for your agency, but I felt it could surely injure occupants in the kitchen area.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG8ME
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The component that failed/malfunctioned is the CV axle, the part is no longer available for inspection. The safety risk posed is loss of control of the vehicle, subsequent damage to other vital steering and stability parts such as the wheel bearings, axles, alignment, and lower ball joint. The problem has been confirmed by a RAM dealership, and corrected under an extended warranty. The component has not been inspected outside of the RAM dealership technicians and potentially the warranty provider. There were no warning lights or indicators from the computer/OBD. Physical symptoms and signs included uncontrollable vehicle shaking/vibration, and difficulty maintaining control at high speeds. Other symptoms/signs may include the frequent need for realignment, and unique tire tread wear patterns. Symptoms appeared around 58,000 original miles. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG8ME
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: There were two recalls for the Carefree Awning unexpectedly deploying on Winnebago Travato camper vans. I recently went in for the 2nd recall and after completing it, the awning failed when the shop was testing it after completing the recall. Recall letter arrived on April 8th and called my dealer (McLain’s in Denton) on April 9th, and they ordered parts. They texted on June 13th to say the parts had arrived. I called and scheduled the first slot. I arrived on Jun 24th at 9am. By early afternoon, the lead tech came to visit me and said this recall was very complicated, and it appeared it would not be complete that day. My wife drove the 80+ mile round trip to pick me up that afternoon. On Tuesday (6/25) about mid-day they called and said they were done, but when testing it, the awning shot out at high speed. They said the wedge had been installed, which was supposed to prevent this issue, so I don’t understand how it failed. They said there were ordering a new motor. I sent emails to both Winnebago and Carefree to alert them to this failure and ask that they investigate how this recall did not solve the issue of awning deployment from a broken gear. Winnebago responded, "We would recommend McClain's review this issue with our tech support. If the awning recall is done properly, this should not happen. The recall remedy has been thoroughly tested and approved by NHTSA.” I replied to them and ask them to reach out to McClain’s and do a thorough investigation. On Wednesday (6/26), I checked with McLain’s, and they said they were still waiting for Winnebago to approve the replacement motor. Friday (6/28). I got a text at 9am saying the part arrived. Carefree did respond and said they would need a photo of the wedge installation to make sure it was done correctly. Winn and Carefree should be taking this more seriously and investigating. They completed it and I picked it up on Sat (6/29). It is working, but I have no confidence they fixed the root issue.
LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
- VIN: 3C6LRVBG7ME
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: The blind spot monitoring function frequently disables while driving this vehicle. This occurs more often during warmer weather and in my case only seems to happen when the brakes are applied. For a few minutes after each "blind spot disabled" warning, you cannot reset the blind spot alert function through the touchscreen system. This is a safety issue because you often don't notice that the blind spot alert is disabled and expect to see or hear the blind spot warning when driving if an approaching vehicle is in your blind spot. This issue seems to primarily affect 2021 Ram Promaster vans. There are many posts in the ram promaster online forum about it @ [XXX] . My dealer connected my promaster to their computer just after the disable warning and there was no indication that it had happened--even though you could visually see that the blind spot monitor was off in the vehicle touchscreen monitor. They kept the vehicle for an afternoon and could not determine what was causing this malfunction. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG1ME
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The Transmission in these vehicles have been known to fail. This is just one of 38 in our fleet. Currently there are 8 of these vehicles at dealerships with transmission problem. We also have 4 more now that have to wait for dealerships to have room for them. Between the 2 dealerships within 6 miles of our business headquarters, they currently have almost 70 ProMasters with transmission problems and can only fix one at a time due to lack of parts. Some wont shift out of first, some wont shift into drive at all, and only work in reverse. The danger comes from not being able to shift while on busy roadways. leaving drivers stranded sometimes many miles from our fleet people that can help them get back to headquarters. If this is not the proper agency to report this to, then may we kindly request being pointed in the proper direction

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-03
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 3C6MRVUG0ME
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Jayco Entegra hauled by a 2021 Ram Promaster 3500. The contact initially heard an alarm sound coming from inside the RV. Upon opening the RV door, heavy, white smoke filled the entire RV. The fire department was called to the scene where they discovered the source of the smoke coming from the RV's battery; however, no flames were seen. The fire department was able to extract the battery from the RV and let the battery air out in an open field until the smoke dissipated. A fire report was filed and no injuries were reported. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact later received a recall notice for NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V160000 (Electrical System) which was linked to the failure. The vehicle remained in the owner's possession where it had yet to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 10,589.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
- VIN: 3C6LRVDG0ME
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Every time the vehicle is driven downhill for an extended period, such as over a mountain pass, the brake system light comes on and can only be turned off by stopping the vehicle and turning the car off. This has happened every time I go over a mountain pass for the last 1-1/2 years. I have reported this to the Ram dealer and have been told that this is a known issue on Ram Promasters and that there is no resolution by multiple technicians. It is disconcerting every time it comes on, but I worry that when I really have a brake issue I will not know it since the brake light comes on all the time already.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-03
- VIN: 3C6MRVJG0ME

EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-11
- VIN: 3C6LRVBGXME
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: While driving Highway 95 in Bullhead City, AZ the awning deployed. I heard a very large noise and the BMPro making a noise as if the awning button was being pressed. I was in the middle lane of the 3 lane hwy and immediately pulled over to the right. My friend removed it on scene and put it in the van. 1. 12 Jan drove it to California. Turned in my van and awning to [XXX], Santa Fe Springs, CA on 13 January. I haven’t heard from the dealership but have a lot of email correspondence from the manufacturer, Thor. I don’t know what they did with the part. Mileage was 7,740 miles. I opened the awning once at my house right after I bought it. It’s never been opened since. 2. I could have been injured or died if it would have hit something or someone else and I would have been traveling at a higher rate of speed. Others driving could have been injured or died and at the very least a great deal of property damage. 3. I have no idea what Mike Thompson Dealership did when I dropped it off. My service advisor said they were going to have the local Thor Rep look at it to determine if it was under warranty. After service Rep told me this, I contacted Thor and described what happened and the lady said it was absolutely covered under warranty. I have been in email contact with Thor and have all the emails between us but can’t figure out how to get them in this report. 4. I don’t know when and if the local Thor Rep reviewed the damage. Dealership has not communicated with me. 5. Absolutely no warning this would happen. Like I said, as it was happening and when I pulled over, the sound of the awning deploying was coming from the BMPro. As a side note… this incident has given me PTSD feeling like I cannot trust that this will not happen again and that I might not be so lucky next time.
