Common 2009 Porsche Cayman problems
Based on the information from the sources provided, here are common problems with the Porsche Cayman 2009 based on complaints from owners:
- Axle Assembly Problems:
The axle assembly fault, particularly affecting the 2014-2015 Cayman and Cayman S models, poses a significant safety risk. This issue can lead to dire consequences, especially during high-speed driving, and Porsche issued a recall to address this problem. Failure of the axle assembly can result in similar consequences to a faulty CV axle, impacting the vehicle's control and safety.
- Airbag System Faults:
Another common problem reported by Porsche Cayman owners is related to the faulty airbag control module. This issue can deactivate the airbags, posing a serious safety risk in the event of a crash. Porsche issued a recall in 2016 to address this problem and ensure the proper functioning of the airbag system to enhance driving safety.
- Engine-Related Issues:
Owners of early Cayman models, particularly the 2005 and 2006 versions, have faced problems with the intermediate shaft bearing (IMS). This issue can lead to improper crankshaft rotation, blockage of oil lines in the engine, stalling, and other serious engine-related problems. While the IMS problem was more prevalent in other Porsche models, oil leaks remain a common issue across various Cayman models, affecting engine lubrication and potentially causing overheating.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the Porsche Cayman 2009 have faced, ranging from transmission and safety concerns to engine-related issues. Addressing these issues promptly through proper maintenance and timely repairs is crucial to ensuring the longevity and performance of the vehicle.
What is the common problem Porsche Cayman?
Likely Oil Leaks
The Porsche Cayman has a number of common sources for leaking oil. Some of the most common include rear main seal (see below), valve covers, spark plug seals and oil cooler seals. Less common are leaks from the cam seals and scavenger oil pump seal.
Is A Porsche Cayman a reliable car?
Are Porsche Caymans Generally Reliable? On average, you can expect the Porsche Cayman to be fairly reliable. There aren't very many model years you should avoid, and most Porsche Cayman users don't have major complaints.
Does the 2009 Porsche Cayman have the IMS issues?
The IMS problem only impacts models that are 2008 and older. The 2009 and newer engines do not have an IMS-- and therefore do not have the IMS problem. If you want "Low incidence" of IMS failure go '06 to '08 Cayman or Boxster. If you want "ZERO" chance of IMS failure go '09 to present model Cayman/ Boxster.
Are Porsche Cayman S a good investment?
However, all Cayman are holding their value well with most trading at higher money than the similar Boxster of the same year. The Porsche Cayman is the car that will always keep it's value and resell easier than the Boxster. Don't buy an early automatic Porsche Cayman!

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-09-10
- VIN: WP0AA29859U
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE ON A PUBLIC FREEWAY, I HEARD A LOUD SNAP AND THE SHIFTER CABLES BROKE IN AN ATTEMPT TO SHIFT INTO 4TH GEAR, LEAVING THE VEHICLE STUCK IN 3RD GEAR. VEHICLE WAS IN A GRADUAL ACCELERATION AT THE TIME OF FAILURE ENTERING THE FREEWAY. THIS RESULTED IN AN UNSAFE CONDITION, AS INITIALLY IT WAS NOT APPARENT WHAT HAPPENED AND THE ENGINE OVER REVED CAUSING UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. EVENTUALLY IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS STUCK IN GEAR. SPEED CONTROL WAS IMPAIRED, AND VEHICLE WAS IN AN UNSAFE, DIMINISHED CONTROL CONFIGURATION. THIS ALSO CAUSE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL FOR A MOMENT AS THE TAIL OF THE CAR SWEPT OUT. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS MINIMAL TRAFFIC WHICH ALLOWED THE SITUATION TO BE HANDLED. HAD THE TRAFFIC BEEN HEAVIER THIS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE CASE. THIS ALSO MADE FOR AN UNSAFE SITUATION TRYING TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN AND MOVE OFF THE FREEWAY. VEHICLE IS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SO EVENTUALLY REDUCED THROTTLE AND USE OF THE CLUTCH ENABLED A SAFE OUTCOME. REPLACEMENT OF THE SHIFTER CABLES WAS REQUIRED TO RESTORE VEHICLE TO OPERATIONAL CONDITION ( AFTER TOW TO A REPAIR LOCATION). UPON SEARCHING FORUMS, THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE DESIGN OF THE SHIFT CABLES. A PLASTIC SHEATH CAN MOVE OUT OF ALIGNMENT CAUSING METAL ON METAL WEAR OF THE CABLE UNTIL IT SNAPS.

EVENTUALLY IT BECAME APPARENT THAT A TRANSMISSION FAILURE OF SOME TYPE HAD OCCURRED AND THE VEHICLE WAS STUCK IN GEAR. SPEED CONTROL WAS IMPAIRED, AND VEHICLE WAS IN AN UNSAFE, DIMINISHED CONTROL CONFIGURATION. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS MINIMAL TRAFFIC WHICH ALLOWED THE SITUATION TO BE EVALUATED WITHOUT PERIL. HAD THE TRAFFIC BEEN HEAVIER THIS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE CASE. *TR

I love this car! I previously owned a BMW, but the Cayman is a true sports car. In just 3 months of ownership, I've had 5 people stop me at red lights or the gas station to tell me how awesome the car looks.

When shopping for a car, there are some that take a while to decide on, hoping you won't second guess your choice. Then there are those where the decision is made within seconds of turning the key and dropping it into gear. This Porsche is definitely one of the latter. As soon as you hear the sharp snarl of the 6-cylinder engine, which is perfectly balanced in the mid-chassis location, you know that this is a driver's car. The interior is Spartan but comfortable, with lots of leg and head room, and excellent views without any blind spots. Until you've driven a Porsche, you won't appreciate the torque that makes the 6-speed transmission more than enough to reach 60 mph in under 5 seconds, and the brakes that can stop you just as quickly.

I'm glad to hear that you found a car that suits your needs! It sounds like the Porsche 08 Cayman Design is a great choice for an everyday car and weekend driving enthusiast. The interior comfort and spaciousness seem to be impressive features, and I'm sure the exhaust sounds amazing. It's also exciting to hear that you own #350 of 777, making it a unique and special car. I hope you continue to enjoy driving it and that it brings you many happy memories!

The car is an absolute joy to drive, thanks to its perfect blend of handling, braking, and acceleration. I opted for the basic model (non-s, 5 speed, 19 inch wheels, bose, heated seats), which was a bit hard to find. While the other features are certainly nice, they can be quite expensive and add a lot of weight. Trust me, you won't even miss them, and you can save a whopping 25 grand. The car is perfect for drivers, yet it's also remarkably comfortable and quiet. Plus, it gets an impressive 29 mpg on the highway.

Driving a Cayman is like driving a VERY fast go cart. The mid engine design makes the twisties incredibly fun. You should get one of your own... but sorry, you can't have mine!

This car is definitely a head turner in the looks department and can be quite fun to drive (when it runs properly). It also has some functional features such as cupholders and front and rear storage. However, I have had some issues with reliability as I have owned two Porsches and both have been quite unreliable. Unfortunately, this car has been in the garage every $5K miles due to issues such as failed oil separators (2x), MAF issues (2x), and power steering leaks, among others. It's quite puzzling how this car has received good reviews.

This car has good handling, but it's important to be cautious about overpaying. Dealers tend to overcharge for this model, and it's easy to realize you've overpaid when you try to sell it later. Unfortunately, this model is known for IMS problems, which can cause major engine issues. Unlike American or Japanese cars, the cost of repairing a Porsche engine can be very high. If you're interested in this model, I suggest looking for a 2009 or later version, as they are less common and tend to hold their value better. It's important to be aware that, like many German cars, this model can be overrated if it's not an S model. Non-S models may lack the performance you're looking for.
