The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2017 Hyundai Santa fe sport problems

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with several reports of major engine rebuilds or replacements, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt problems.

A known problem with the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's engine is a machining issue with a third-party supplier that allowed metal fragments to get into the oil, causing engine failure. While Hyundai did not recall the vehicle, they extended the warranty on the engine. However, some owners still experienced engine failure and had to wait for an extended period due to supply chain issues.

Another engine-related issue is high oil consumption, with some owners reporting that the vehicle uses one quart of oil in less than 400 miles, while others report 1 quart per 600 miles. Some dealerships have suggested expensive upper end carbon cleaning procedures before submitting a warranty claim, but it does not sound legitimate to some owners.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has also been reported to have problems with the seat belts. Hyundai has recalled the vehicle due to the seat belts detaching in a crash, which defeats the purpose of the safety feature. The latest recall includes the 2017 Santa Fe Sport.

Additionally, some owners have reported problems with the crankshaft position sensor, causing engine performance problems.

The vehicle has also been reported to have issues with the speakers, with some owners reporting no sound from the speakers.

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has also been reported to have problems with the windows, locks, and latches, with some owners reporting that the rear hood closes without warning.

Lastly, some owners have reported problems with the electrical accessories, such as buttons not working.

In summary, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has been reported to have several common problems, including engine failure, high oil consumption, seat belt detachment, crankshaft position sensor failure, speaker problems, windows, locks, and latches issues, and electrical accessories problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5NMZT3LB5HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine failure - Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. Car started shaking violently and would hesitate or not move at all when trying to accelerate. I was left in a few dicey situations when it would hesitate while trying to accelerate. Hyandai will not confirm there is a problem with this particular engine problem, however I’ve read there are many other people with the same car, same problem- Excessive oil consumption which causes damage to the pistons, which can cause compression problems and eventually engine failure. I believe this is what happened to my car. Hyandai has done a diagnostic but failed to cover it under their extended engine warranty. Their claim is that they extended the engine warranty for rod bearing failure only which they could not find in my vehicle. My vehicle has had regular maintenance and only has 95k on it. Yes the engine light came on and I took it to my mechanic and then to All Star Hyandai, Pittsburg Ca

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: 5NMZU3LB2HH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This vehicle was purchased used in 2020. In August 2022, during a daily commute, the engine began to sputter, lose power, and ultimately shut off at a traffic light. Fortunately, this happened on surface roads where speeds are low and traffic lights are frequent. The car was safely restarted and brought to a nearby service center. The car was subsequently towed to a Hyundai dealership 1.5 hours away because the local dealership was overwhelmed with vehicles and had a five-month wait for appointments. Despite having less than 67,000 miles, the engine had been experiencing excessive oil consumption for over a year. According to the Hyundai service center, the engine needs replacement. The Hyundai service center in Killeen Texas indicated that three of the four cylinders are below their piston compression requirements. Public sentiment on the excessive oil consumption problem can be found in the numerous comments on this website: [Top Class Actions - Hyundai Class Action Alleges Excessive Oil Consumption] [XXX] ]. I reached out to the Chief Customer Officer at Hyundai Motor America to determine whether they would stand behind their product and provide compensation for this obvious defect. However, Hyundai refused to offer any compensation, stating the car was outside its 5-year, 60,000-mile warranty. The excessive oil consumption leading to engine failure is a potentially dangerous issue for these vehicles. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2017 Hyundai Santa fe sport car reviews

  1. Ward O'Connell 2025-04-24

The car has good looks both inside and out, and some nice touches such as Apple Play. The turbo provides decent acceleration if power isn't needed instantly, and the vehicle is quiet. However, there are some cons to consider. The headlights are poor, and the audio system is horrible (I had to upgrade both). The steering and brakes are mediocre, but still manageable. The biggest issue is the powertrain stumbling when power is suddenly needed at low speeds in heavy traffic situations, such as changing lanes. This can be dangerous and makes the car unsafe. Many others have reported the same issue on the NHTSA website. I would recommend test driving the car at low speeds, say 5 mph, and then suddenly pressing the accelerator to experience the stumbling. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's important to be aware of the potential safety issue with the powertrain.

  2. Garrett Ankunding 2025-04-16

I have owned three Santa Fe Sports - a 2013, 2014, and now a 2017. While the previous models were satisfactory, I have to say that the 2017 model has been a disappointment. I purchased it in April 2016 and within months, the AC/heat began to emit an unpleasant odor. Despite bringing it in for service multiple times, the issue persists. Additionally, the car has developed a strange noise from the undercarriage during slow wide turns, which has yet to be resolved. The car also experienced significant vibration issues, which required multiple trips to the dealership to fix. While some of these issues have been addressed, the steering wheel still vibrates at certain speeds, which I was informed is normal for this vehicle. The car has also had a transmission software update due to shuddering and bucking, which has improved the situation but not completely resolved it. The car also experiences difficulty starting up in cold weather, despite the fact that I live in Florida. I have had to replace the radio system due to display issues, android auto connectivity problems, and a malfunctioning reverse camera. Despite all of these issues, I will say that the car is spacious and has a user-friendly touch screen. However, I have lost faith in the reliability of this vehicle and the brand as a whole. I am currently at a dealership and have been informed that some of the issues I have experienced cannot be duplicated. As a result, I am looking to trade in this car for a different brand. Otherwise, I am extremely dissatisfied.

  3. Deonte Lehner 2025-01-17

The Hyundai Sport AWD Ultimate is an attractive and well-executed car that handles corners with ease. Although we have driven 30,000 miles, mostly in the city, I must admit that I regret buying it. The driver's seat is incredibly uncomfortable, unlike the rest of the seats which are comfortable enough. The seat material is of high quality, but the seat itself is hard as a rock and short in depth, which makes it uncomfortable for the thighs. Additionally, the seat does not tilt as I would like, only going up and down and back and forward. It takes time to figure out all the technology, but the entertainment and technology are very well done with quality materials throughout. I would recommend renting one and driving it for a week before making a decision. The Pathfinder SL in 4-wheel drive and the Highlander SE are better buys. I wish the car had a comfortable driver's seat and actually got 19-24 mpg, then it would be a good one. I just wish I could get my money back. The car listed at $39,800, but I paid $34,200 plus $3,300 tax, $500 DMV, $1,700 for prepaid maintenance for 7 years, and $2,000 for an extended bumper-to-bumper warranty. Note that extended warranties are not from Hyundai, but from the dealer, so be careful. Good luck if the dealer goes out of business. The fuel pump went out at 20k, but it was covered under warranty. Now that it is 5 years old, the used car value is about $25k.The car is very quick with 2t. It handles ideally in the city, but it may be uncomfortable and too small for road trips lasting 4 hours or more. However, the technology is sound and there are no gripes. Additionally, the car has proven to be reliable without any issues.

I paid $41.5 k for the top of the line Ultimate Tech 2.0 AWD (36 month lease). Unfortunately, I have experienced some safety concerns with the car. The smart cruise control sometimes fails to brake in time, which can be alarming. Additionally, the car fails to accelerate promptly in all modes (Econ/Norm/Sport), which can make merging onto a highway unsafe. The backup camera also goes dark intermittently, which can be frustrating. Furthermore, the CD resets to the beginning of Track 1 whenever I get a phone call, and the volume can be difficult to adjust if it was left high the night before. The suspension is also quite firm, which can make for a bumpy ride. Lastly, the wind noise above 45 MPH is excessive and annoying, especially with the luggage racks mounted, even while empty. I have been in contact with Hyundai Support for five months now, but unfortunately, my concerns have not been resolved. Despite these issues, I was initially attracted to the overall look and style of the car, especially the massive moon roof. However, I do not feel as safe as I would like in this car. I am hoping to find a solution to these issues and will continue to work with Hyundai to resolve them. Thank you for your understanding.

The 2017 Sante Fe 2.0T awd I leased (with only 28 months left, if I don't get broadsided) is experiencing hesitation issues when pulling into traffic, which is a very concerning problem. Despite having taken the vehicle back to the dealer three times in the past seven months, they claim that there is nothing wrong with the car and the computer diagnostics found no problems. However, it is important to note that Hyundai will not accept that there is a problem with these engines or transmissions until enough consumers complain or die. At this time, it is not cost-effective to repair.

Positive 2017 Hyundai Santa fe sport car reviews

This is a great SUV with stylish design and the best warranty in the industry. Don't be swayed by negative 'professional' reviews, this car is peppy and fast, even when you punch it for an SUV. The handling is excellent and the technology is top-notch, especially if you opt for the tech package. It's an excellent value for what you get. I compared it to Mercedes, BMW, and domestic brands, and hands down, it's the best value for the money. The full glass top is incredible and the largest in its class. The dynamic bending lights with the xenon lights are great, although it would have been even better if the fog lights were xenon too instead of regular halogen. Also, the dual-zone air conditioning works great, but it oscillates while in use, which is something you have to get used to.

After test driving the BMW X3, I couldn't justify spending $50,000 on all the safety features. However, when we test drove the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, we were pleasantly surprised. For around $34,000, we were able to get all the bells and whistles. It rides and drives just as well, has all the electronics and luxury features, costs less to maintain, and has a better warranty. It may have less horsepower, but since it's an SUV, I'm not racing it anyway. Overall, we love it!

This is our family car, and everything about it is great! If you're looking to buy one, I would recommend getting various quotes so you can get the best deal.

  4. Dereck Zieme 2025-03-01

The ride is a bit bumpy, but overall, it's a great car for hauling kids and groceries. It's spacious and well-built, and I was able to get it for a great price. I'm also getting better gas mileage than expected, averaging 27MPG. Although the engine is a bit underpowered, I chose this car for its fuel efficiency and avoided a turbo. I did notice that the transmission shifts down frequently on the highway, but using mid-grade fuel helps to smooth it out. Compared to other options like the CRV, RAV4, and Escape, this car is bigger and similarly priced. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase!

I recently leased a 2017 Santa Fe Sport and I absolutely love it! It has everything I was looking for in an SUV - reliability, low maintenance, and all the accessories that other high-end SUVs typically have. I opted for the premium and tech package, and although it was a bit more expensive, I definitely feel like it was worth the investment. The Santa Fe drives like a dream and is incredibly quiet and comfortable. This was my first time driving a Hyundai, and I'm already planning on being a repeat customer!
