1995 Mercury Tracer problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.

The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.

After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Common 1995 Mercury Tracer problems

The Mercury Tracer, produced from 1987 to 1999, was a compact car known for its affordability and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it had its share of common problems, particularly in the second generation (1991-1996). Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Faulty Distributor Cap and Rotor: Another common issue in the second generation Tracer is a faulty distributor cap and rotor, which can cause misfires. This problem is more prevalent in the 1993 model year. To fix this issue, the distributor cap and rotor need to be replaced.
  • Stalling or Rough Idle: Stalling or rough idle caused by vacuum leaks was another common problem in the second generation Tracer. This issue can be caused by faulty vacuum lines or a faulty idle air control valve. To fix this issue, the vacuum lines need to be inspected and replaced if necessary, and the idle air control valve needs to be checked and replaced if necessary.
  • Ignition Switch Failures: Ignition switch failures were common in the third generation Tracer (1997-1999). This issue can cause the car to stall or not start at all. To fix this issue, the ignition switch needs to be replaced.
  • Alternator Failures: Alternator failures, which can result in battery drain or a dead battery, were also common in the third generation Tracer. To fix this issue, the alternator needs to be replaced.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: Intake manifold gasket leaks, which can cause coolant loss and overheating, were a common problem in the third generation Tracer. To fix this issue, the intake manifold gasket needs to be replaced.
  • Timing Belt Failure: Timing belt failure was a common problem in the second generation Tracer, particularly in the 1.6-liter engine. This issue can cause engine damage and requires the timing belt to be replaced.
  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks were a common problem in the second generation Tracer, particularly from camshaft seals and valve cover gaskets. These issues can cause engine damage and require the affected components to be replaced.

In summary, the Mercury Tracer had several common problems, particularly in the second and third generations. These issues included transmission problems, faulty distributor caps and rotors, stalling or rough idle, ignition switch failures, alternator failures, intake manifold gasket leaks, timing belt failure, and oil leaks. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help prevent further damage and keep the Tracer running smoothly.

Is a Mercury Tracer a good car?

Vehicle overview

The Tracer's low price, decent reliability and above average crash test scores have consistently offered recent college grads and young families an attractive set of American wheels. After a major redesign in 1997, the Tracer has seen only minor upgrades in '98 and '99.

What is the Mercury Tracer equivalent to?

The Mercury Tracer is an American counterpart of the Australian-market Ford Laser KE, sold in Japan, Asia, and South Africa. While sharing a slightly different body, the Laser shared a common chassis with the front-wheel drive Mazda 323, designated the Mazda BF platform.

What is the value of a 1997 Mercury Tracer?

The value of a used 1997 Mercury Tracer ranges from $141 to $635, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.

What is the Ford version of the Mercury Tracer?

Mercury Tracer | Second generation (1991–1996)

While remaining a counterpart of the Ford Laser, the redesign also made it a Mercury counterpart of the American Ford Escort (alongside the renamed Mazda Protegé sedan).

What is the Ford equivalent of a Mercury Tracer?

Ford Laser

The first Mercury-brand vehicle assembled outside of North America, the Tracer was a counterpart of the Ford Laser (itself a variant of the Mazda 323) sold in Asia-Pacific markets.

What is the value of a 1997 Mercury Tracer?

The value of a used 1997 Mercury Tracer ranges from $141 to $635, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.

Why did Ford stop Mercury?

Ford completely phased out the Mercury brand in 2011, as the company refocused its marketing and engineering efforts solely on the Ford and Lincoln brands. “Mercury has been a tremendous line for Ford Motor Company because it filled the niche between our Ford and Lincoln lineups,” said Kreipke.

Why did Ford drop Mercury?

Ford ended the production of the model in the fourth quarter of 2010. Mercury was originally created to offer Ford customers a premium vehicle. However, the popularity and corresponding sales of Ford-branded vehicles had left the Mercury brand weak, with many of its loyal customers electing to drive Ford models.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-08-01
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS THESE PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALL POSTED INFORMATION ON THE INTERNET. NOW I HAVE TAKE MY CAR INTO MULTIPLE PLACES TO HAVE THE PROBLEM RESOLVED, AND NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I THINK SINCE SO MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM THAT IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM, BUT A PROBLEM THAT MERCURY AS A COMPANY NEEDS TO FIX. I AM HAVING AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH MY VAN NOT STARTING. IT IS A 1993 MERCURY VILLAGER. ON SATURDAY AFTER DRIVING IT FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR WITH MULTIPLE STOPS WHERE I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND WENT INTO A STORE, IT WOULD NOT START. WHEN I TURNED THE KEY EVERY SINGLE LIGHT CAME ON, SEAT BELT, CHECK ENGINE, IT SEEMED LIKE 7 OR 8 IN ALL. THERE WAS NOTHING. WE TRIED JUMPING IT, BUT THAT DID NOT DO ANYTHING. LATER THAT DAY SOMEONE TOLD ME IT SOUNDED TO HIM LIKE IT WASN'T IN PARK OR AT LEAST THE CAR DIDN'T THINK IT WAS IN PARK. I TRIED STARTING IT AGAIN AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE, TURNING TO ON AND MOVING FROM PARK TO NEUTRAL THEN BACK TO PARK. IT STARTED UP JUST LIKE ALWAYS. I DROVE AROUND AND MADE 2 STOPS. THE FIRST TIME IT STARTED RIGHT BACK UP, THE SECOND TIME IT WOULDN'T START, BUT AFTER MOVING IT TO NEUTRAL AND BACK TO PARK IT STARTED RIGHT UP. AFTER A TOTAL DRIVING TIME OF ABOUT 35 - 40 MINUTES I ARRIVED HOME. ABOUT 20 MINUTES LATER I WENT OUT TO START THE CAR AND GOT NOTHING. THIS TIME THE NEUTRAL TO PARK TRICK DID NOT WORK. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIME OVER THE COURSE OF AN HOUR WITH NO LUCK. HAVE A 1997 VILLAGER WITH 130K ON IT. THE VAN HAS BEEN RUNNING FINE UNTIL TWO DAYS AGO. I WENT OUT TO START IT AND IT SPITS, SPUTTERS, BACKFIRES AND DIES. *TR
