Common 2012 Porsche Cayman problems
The Porsche Cayman 2012 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to mechanical and electrical issues.
- Faulty fuel level indicator: Some owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge not accurately reflecting the amount of fuel in the tank. In some cases, the gauge may not go to the top when the tank is full, showing only 7/8ths full. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel level sender or a malfunctioning fuel gauge.
- Turbo failure: The Cayman 2012 is equipped with a turbocharged engine, and some owners have reported issues with turbo failure. This can result in a loss of power, poor acceleration, and increased engine noise. Turbo failure can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged turbo components, insufficient lubrication, or issues with the engine control system.
- PDK Faults: The Cayman 2012 is equipped with Porsche's PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) dual-clutch transmission. Some owners have reported issues with the PDK system, including faults that can cause noisy downshifts. These faults can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged transmission components, software issues, or problems with the hydraulic system.
- Decaying headlights: Some owners have reported issues with the headlights on the Cayman 2012, including decaying or cloudy lenses. This can result in reduced visibility and safety, particularly when driving at night or in low-light conditions.
- Lane Change Assistance Malfunction: The Cayman 2012 is equipped with a lane change assistance system, which is designed to alert the driver when a vehicle is in the car's blind spot. Some owners have reported issues with this system, including malfunctions that can result in false alarms or failure to detect other vehicles.
In addition to these specific issues, some owners have reported more general electrical and mechanical problems, including issues with the engine, suspension, and electrical system. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear, manufacturing defects, and poor maintenance. To minimize the risk of these issues, it is important to properly maintain the vehicle, including regular inspections and servicing. It is also important to be aware of any recalls or service campaigns related to the vehicle, and to address any issues promptly to avoid further damage or safety risks.

We stopped by a Porsche dealership to test drive the 911 S. My wife saw the Cayman S, and she wanted to test drive it as well. In the end, we decided to go for the mid-engine Cayman S. It was definitely the best decision I've ever made!

When shopping for a car, there are some that take a while to decide on, hoping you won't second guess your choice. Then there are those where the decision is made within seconds of turning the key and dropping it into gear. This Porsche is definitely one of the latter. As soon as you hear the sharp snarl of the 6-cylinder engine, which is perfectly balanced in the mid-chassis location, you know that this is a driver's car. The interior is Spartan but comfortable, with lots of leg and head room, and excellent views without any blind spots. Until you've driven a Porsche, you won't appreciate the torque that makes the 6-speed transmission more than enough to reach 60 mph in under 5 seconds, and the brakes that can stop you just as quickly.

My 3rd Porsche, previously a 914 & a 924, ALL FUN, (total of 53 cars since 1957). The Cayman is perfect and I am 81 years young. The ONLY thing I will say against it is that, here in Canada in the winter with my all season Pirelli Pilots on, it is not very useful in snow of more than a smidgeon. That is where my Volvo S80 AWD comes out all the time.

Easily the most enjoyable driving experience I've had. Tremendous value as well. The vehicle is incredibly well-designed.

This car is definitely a head turner with its stunning looks and it can be a lot of fun to drive (when it's running properly). It also has some functional features like cupholders and front and rear storage. However, I have unfortunately owned two Porsches and both have been the most unreliable vehicles I have ever owned. This one seems to be in the garage every $5K miles due to various issues such as failed oil separators (twice), MAF issues (twice), and power steering leaks, among others. It's hard for me to understand how this car has received good reviews.

This car has good handling, but it's important to be cautious about overpaying. Dealers tend to overcharge for this model, and it's easy to realize you've overpaid when you try to sell it later. Unfortunately, this model is known for IMS problems, which can cause major engine issues. Unlike American or Japanese cars, the cost of repairing a Porsche engine can be very high. If you're interested in this model, I suggest looking for a 2009 or later version, as they are less common and tend to hold their value better. It's important to be aware that, like many German cars, this model can be overrated if it's not an S model. Non-S models may lack the performance you're looking for.

I like the car but have noticed that the headliner is sagging.

You had the car for just 3 days and managed to put over 200 miles on it. It's such a fun car to drive, with superb handling. Your car comes with a range of great features, including sport chrono and comfort package, paddle shift steering, sound system upgrade, natural leather (red), and bi-xenon headlights. However, you regret choosing the optional 19
