Common 2015 Porsche Cayman problems

Based on the information from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Porsche Cayman 2015 based on complaints from owners:

  • Airbag System Problems:
    • Another common problem reported by Porsche Cayman owners is related to the faulty airbag control module. This issue is as serious as the axle assembly problem since deactivated airbags can lead to fatal accidents in the event of a crash. Porsche issued a recall in 2016 to rectify this problem on Porsche Cayman vehicles, highlighting the critical nature of ensuring proper airbag functionality for driver and passenger safety.
  • Engine-Related Issues:
    • Owners of the 2015 Porsche Cayman may face problems related to the infamous IMS (Intermediate Shaft Bearing). This issue can lead to improper crankshaft rotation, blockage of oil lines in the engine, stalling, and serious engine complications. While this problem was more prevalent in the 911 and Boxster models, it was still present in the 2005 and 2006 Cayman models. Additionally, oil leaks are a common issue regardless of the IMS problem, which can result in inadequate engine lubrication, increased operating temperatures, and overheating.
  • Electric System and Equipment Problems:
    • The 2015 Porsche Cayman may also experience electrical issues such as excessive battery discharge and other problems related to the electric system. Reports have indicated problems with flat batteries, faulty hood latches triggering recalls, faulty seatbelt anchor plates, and insufficient instructions in the owner's manual. These issues underscore the importance of addressing electrical system problems promptly to maintain the vehicle's reliability and safety standards.

These common problems with the 2015 Porsche Cayman highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt attention to mechanical issues, and adherence to manufacturer recalls to ensure the safety, performance, and longevity of the vehicle.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-31
  • VIN: WP0AB2A86FK
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Porsche dashboard leather has strunk and separated from the main dashboard. My understanding is that in the event of an accident, this could interfere with the airbag's ability to deploy correctly. A Porsche dealer has reviewed but was unable to repair it. The next step would be to replace. I've discovered this is a very common issue with Porsche vehicles from model years similar to this one.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-26
  • VIN: WP0AB2A8XFK
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The Cayman S model with V6, 3.4L motor, commonly referenced as a 9A1 motor had been self destructing with increasing amounts of metal slivers/chips found in the drained oil, oil filter and oil filter housing. The in-warranty Porsche dealer "installed oil" was first inspected by my shop at 27,031 mi - alarmingly metal was found, PIC attached. Metal was non magnetic, appearing to be aluminium. Subsequent oil/filter inspections found the metal volume to be significantly increasing, PIC attached, putting the motor at risk of self destructing. Car was parked with only 29,509 mi in fear of having the motor blowup/lockup while driving at highway speeds. It would have the potential of stopping abruptly or locking up the rear wheels putting the car in a spin, possibly causing a crash. Risky. Without taking the motor out and disassembling, professional opinion and speculation indicates possible early main crankshaft bearing or rod bearing failure. Motor needs replaced (estimates from $25,000 to $45,000 depending on damage and whether a dealer or independent does the work.) The vehicle is currently parked and taken off the road. Too expensive to fix. Porsche North America offered no investigative or repair support because it is out of warranty. Disappointing customer support, with this being my fourth Porsche. Isolated incident or have others found a similar problem ????

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-31
  • VIN: WP0AB2A82FK
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Porsche Cayman. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the rear housing axle carriers repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V679000 (Power Train). However, upon picking up the vehicle, the rear suspension was unstable and drifted all over the road while driving. The contact was able to drive to his residence. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who inspected the vehicle and completed a torque adjustment however, the failure persisted. The dealer was notified but did not provide any assistance. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle had not experienced a failure prior to the recall repair. The contact also stated that the engine was located at the rear of the vehicle, which presented a severe potential risk to safety. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The contact was awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-11
  • VIN: WP0AB2A84FK
  • Components: AIR BAGS

Negative 2015 Porsche Cayman car reviews

  1. Casper Marquardt 2024-08-13

The 2014 Cayman base model is a car that has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it is one of the most stunning cars on the road, with a beautiful design that catches the eye. The handling of this car is also superb, making you feel like a million bucks when driving it. On the other hand, I had a bad experience driving it in a blizzard. It felt like a death trap on the highway, and I was fishtailing all over the place. The tires just spun with or without traction control, and I got stuck several times on the state highway. Additionally, the base model had no amenities inside, not even a decent radio. It was like driving an old Russian car, very bare bones. The suspension was also pretty hard, making it unpleasant to drive on semi-rough pavement for more than a few minutes. Despite this, I decided to return the car after two days and bought a BMW 440i that is newer, has fewer miles, and cost less. I'm very happy with my decision!

Positive 2015 Porsche Cayman car reviews

  1. Edmond Senger 2024-10-03

I've been the proud owner of a 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS (internal code 981) for over four years now. In this review, I'll put myself in a prospective buyer's shoes and answer some key questions. First off, Cayman or 911? Having driven both, I can confidently say that the Cayman drives like a true sports car, while the 911s (aside from the GT3, GT2, Turbo, GTS) drive more like a GT. For me, the decision was easy. The Cayman offers a more intimate (but not cramped) cabin, a louder exhaust sound, and a lighter feel due to its mid-engine characteristics, all of which make you feel more connected to the driving experience. The 911, on the other hand, is a better choice for daily driving and for those with small kids. It also has an undeniable cachet of being the The GT4 onwards sacrifices some daily driving comfort, but rewards with greater on-track performance. The RS is the perfect choice if you want to outperform GT3 owners. The base car is great for daily use, but lacks torque (except for the 718 base). The GT4 rides low and the front bumper lip can scrape easily, but the RS offers a suspension lifter option to mitigate this issue. When it comes to spec items/options/packages, my car had the following options: - Leather + GTS interior package: highly recommended for the unique looks similar to a 911 GT3/RS. The alcantara option shows dirt quicker but feels awesome in heat or cold conditions - better than leather. Note that you cannot get ventilated seats with alcantara. If you are a neat freak, then get the leather. - PDK: pick this or a 6-speed manual to your taste and mission. Both are excellent choices. PDK is better for track use in my opinion. After driving a manual transmission car for 25 years, I did not miss it. - Wheel caps painted with colored Porsche crest - not a big deal. - Roof lining in Alcantara - completes the look but not a must-have. - Adaptive 18-way seats. Very comfortable and accommodating. I would recommend the 4-way Sports plus seats instead as it gives you all the padding but is much lighter than 18 ways. The 18 ways make a lot more sense if you have 2+ drivers in the family. If you are a hardcore track addict, you will look into an aftermarket seat with harnesses, and the standard setup will not keep you in at track speeds. I would recommend 14 ways if you have a wide torso or hips - the sport plus seats are more constraining. The Cayman R and GT4s come with sport bucket seats that are better suited for smaller frames and are grippy for track use. - BOSE stereo - better than stock, but given that this is a noisy car, it is not a big deal if your car doesn't have it. - Premium package plus: highly recommended as you get heated seats, dimming mirrors (a must), auto a/c, etc. - X73 suspension - this replaces the standard PASM active suspension. The Cayman GTS is a great choice, especially if you're looking for a used S with PDK, X73, sports exhaust, and 18-way seats. The alcantara interior and black trim on the outside give it a racy look. Although the X73 option is more track-focused, the ride can be rough for daily driving. However, dropping the tire pressures can make it less punishing. The Caymans and Boxsters 987.2 onwards are reliable and capable of pounding through several track days without overheating or falling apart. There are some minor issues to be aware of, such as headlight lenses getting micro-fractures from UV, coil packs that tend to last 40k miles or 4 years, potential 3rd gear and suspension issues with GT4s that are heavily tracked, and bore scoring with 987.1 3.4 l cars. However, these issues are not major and can be easily addressed. The maintenance costs for all are not that bad if you are lucky enough to find a trusted independent near you. A Miata would be a cheaper bet for tracking, but the Cayman can easily take it. It's important to get a PPI and look out for an enthusiast-owned car who has regularly serviced it. There is no stigma to getting tracked cars. Overall, I highly recommend buying one.

I've owned many cars, but this one is by far my favorite to drive. I can't help but smile every time I get behind the wheel!

  3. Keyshawn Gutkowski 2024-09-05

I have never driven a vehicle that is as much fun as the Cayman. It feels like the car was built around me, as if the design team took my measurements and tailored the car for me. Everything inside the Porsche feels of quality, and there is nothing cheap about it. You won't be let down by any of its craftsmanship. I chose the 981 S over a base 718 simply for the sound, and to me, each car is identical in every way. Of course, there are some changes on the 718, but good luck picking them out. I drove both, and the 981 was a clear choice for me. I wanted a true Bat Mobile, and I got it in the 981 S. If I could offer advice to a future Cayman owner, I would suggest two options that I got on the car I bought. These options are not what I would have ordered on a new car. Firstly, get the 14-way seats. They are everything important to driving this car, and they make the car fit so perfectly. Secondly, get the high-end stereo. It sounds like you're driving a high-end home theater, and you need music in a sports car. Like I said, I only got these by luck. The car I bought had them, and I'm so thankful it did. You won't go wrong with the Cayman, I guarantee it.

I hope you're enjoying your new Porsche Cayman Basic! It's such an awesome car. I completely agree that 275 hp is more than enough.

  5. Roderick Price 2024-08-17

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned you're on your second Cayman, which is a 2014 base. That's awesome! In my opinion, it's a pretty sweet car. Not only is it well made, but it's also expertly engineered.
