The Chevrolet Trailblazer (9BYC) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand since 2020. It is the smallest crossover from Chevrolet, slotting below the Trax.

Overview

The Trailblazer was launched on April 16, 2019, at the 18th Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition alongside the Tracker, that replaced the outgoing Trax. The Trailblazer is aimed for developed markets, while the Tracker is aimed for emerging markets. Developed by GM Korea, the Trailblazer is assembled in Incheon, South Korea, while the Chinese-market model is produced in Yantai, Shandong, China, by SAIC-GM.

The Trailblazer made its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019, and sales began in early 2020 as a 2021 model year vehicle. There are five trim levels available: L, LS, LT, Activ, and RS. The latter two came standard with dual exhaust and top of the line features. The Activ and RS models also feature a contrasting color roof.

It was launched in the Philippines in October 2021. Imported from South Korea, it notably reused the nameplate from the previous Colorado-based Trailblazer which was discontinued in the same year.

On January 16, 2020, the Trailblazer was launched in South Korea. The Korean-market model is larger in dimension than Trailblazers sold in other markets, with a length of 4,425 mm (174.2 in) and width of 1,810 mm (71.3 in).

Common 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer problems

The 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the interior accessories, fuel gauge, air conditioning, and electrical system.

  • Air Conditioning Problems: From 2002 to 2008, Chevy Trailblazers have been reported to have issues with the HVAC blower motor, which can stop working at one or more speeds. This issue is due to a faulty motor resistor block and can be verified by checking the operation of the switch before taking it in for repairs. The estimated cost to replace the motor is between $118 to $155.
  • Interior Accessories Problems: The 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer has been reported to have issues with interior accessories, such as the speedometer not working, the only air setting that works being level 4, and the need to replace spark plugs. These issues are relatively minor and can be easily fixed. The only significant concern is the affordability of a mechanic to replace the parts.
  • Electrical System Problems: The 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer has been reported to have issues with the electrical system, such as random electrical problems, headlight problems, and tail light turn signal bulbs constantly burning out. These issues are due to a gremlin in the system, which is probably caused by some previous incident that resulted in water being able to get into the lift gate. The estimated cost to replace the headlight assemblies is between $200 to $400.

In summary, the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer has several common problems related to the fuel gauge, air conditioning, interior accessories, and electrical system. These issues can be fixed, but the cost and affordability of a mechanic to replace the parts can be a concern. It is essential to research the model thoroughly before purchasing a used Chevrolet Trailblazer to ensure that it will hold up for the long haul.

Still no service light or anything, but feels like I'm stuck in A4WD. Feels like there is a drag and a pulling to the right. Also using more gas since. • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN 2018 WE WERE HAVING A FUEL PRESSURE ISSUE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE ICV HAD CRACKED AROUND THE GAS TANK. WHEN I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE I FOUND THERE WAS A SPECIAL COVERAGE WARRANTY FOR THE ISSUE AND CALLED THE NEAREST CHEVY DEALERSHIP. THEY TOLD ME THAT THE COVERAGE HAD EXPIRED A MONTH EARLIER AND THEY WOULDN'T HONOR THE COVERAGE BUT IF WE WANTED THE CAR FIXED IT WOULD BE OVER$1000. WE'RE NOT THE FIRST OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND IM SURE THAT'S WHY I NEVER RECEIVED THE NOTICE OF THE SPECIAL COVERAGE. CONSIDERING THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL TANK AND I HAVE CHILDREN IN MY CAR, I'M NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY THIS SPECIAL COVERAGE EXPIRED IN THE FIRST PLACE. PEOPLE BUY USED CARS ALL THE TIME AND IF THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T CATCH IT BEFORE SELLING THE CAR IT'S UNFAIR TO PUT THE EXPENSE ON THE NEW OWNER WHEN IT'S A DEFECT CAUSED BY THE MANUFACTURER'S CHOICE IN UNRELIABLE PARTS. *TR

2005-05-05
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE DRIVER WISHING TO SIGNAL A TURN BY MOVING THE DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL LEVER, (UP OR DOWN) MAY CAUSE THE FRONT MARKER/TURN LIGHTS AND REAR TURN LIGHTS TO FLASH IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO HAZARD WARNING, RATHER THAN FLASHING ON THE DESIRED SIDE ONLY.
  • Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CLEARLY SIGNAL THEIR INTENTIONS TO TURN, CHANGE TRAVEL LANES, OR POTENTIALLY WARN OTHERS OF AN IMPAIRED VEHICLE OPERATING CONDITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SUSPECT FLASHER MODULES WITH A NEW FLASHER MODULE DESIGNED WITH SEALED RELAYS AND MORE DURABLE CONTACT MATERIAL INSIDE OF THE RELAYS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 4, 2005. ISUZU BEGAN MAILING OWNER LETTERS ON AUGUST 4, 2005. • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
  • Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. BOTH OF THESE FAILURES CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP ASSEMBLIES, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THEM. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 22, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER
  • Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES HAVE WINDSHIELD WIPER SYSTEMS THAT WILL NOT TURN ON, CEASE OPERATION WHILE IN USE, FAIL TO TURN OFF/ON BY THEMSELVES (MOISTURE SENSITIVE WIPER SYSTEM), OR HAVE CONTINUOUS WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP OPERATION BECAUSE THE PRESENCE OF WATER WITHIN THE WIPER MODULES CAN EITHER CAUSE A SHORT CIRCUIT OR CAN LEAD TO THE CORROSION OF COMPONENTS WITHIN THE MODULE.
  • Consequence: DEPENDING ON THE OCCURRENCE AND WEATHER SITUATION, DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL COVER THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE VENT HOLE WITH A PATCH. ALSO, THE WIPER MOTOR, CIRCUIT BOARD, AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR WILL BE INSPECTED TO SIGNS OF WATER INTRUSION AND/OR CORROSION AND BE REPLACED AS REQUIRED. THE RECALL BEGAN JULY 6, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

IN ADDITION, THESE VEHICLES HAVE AN OVERRIDE THAT CAN ALLOW THE TRANSMISSION TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK WITH THE IGNITION IN THE OFF POSITION.
  • Consequence: THESE OVERRIDES ARE NOT PERMITTED UNLESS THE VEHICLE HAS A LOCKING STEERING COLUMN.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL ELIMINATE THESE CONDITIONS BY DISABLING THE OVERRIDES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 29, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, GMC AT 1-800-462-8782, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537, OR HUMMER AT 1-866-486-6376.

Negative 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer car reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed my LTZ! However, I experienced frequent issues with the check engine light, which required me to visit the dealership and my local repair shop multiple times a month. As a result, I had to use several rental cars.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I'm glad to hear that you upgraded to a bigger and nicer car with more power. However, I understand your concern about the gas mileage, which is currently at 11-12 in town and 14-15 on the highway. Fortunately, your wife only has a 1 mile commute. You mentioned that you may try a tune-up, but with only 60k miles, it shouldn't really need one. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with us!

We bought this vehicle brand new and have put over 80,000 miles on it. It has been extremely reliable, with the only repairs needed being bulb replacements (which seem to happen quite often). We anticipate getting at least another 100,000 miles out of it. It's also great for towing!

Despite the issues I faced with this vehicle, I can confidently say that the engine and transmission were reliable. However, there were some engineering flaws such as the air con line running between the frame and body which caused leaks due to flexing. GM's solution was to raise the body off the frame and put the replacement back in the same place. Additionally, there were frequent repairs needed, including the gauge cluster which went out. Although the dealer's price for repair was outrageous, I managed to get it fixed for about 1/3 of the dealer quote. Unfortunately, the frame rusted so badly that the control arm mounts rusted through, making it unsafe to drive. Overall, while there were some issues with the vehicle, the engine and transmission were reliable.

Although I am sorry to hear about the issues you have experienced with your GM product, I appreciate you sharing your feedback with us. It sounds like you have had a frustrating experience with the new door strap replacement not solving the problem, dome lights coming on when hitting a bump, 4-wheel drive stopping working and hesitation from 1st to 2nd gear. I can understand how this would be concerning. It's great to hear that you have had a positive experience with the dealership service. Thank you for considering a GM product and I hope you find a vehicle that meets your needs and expectations.

Positive 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer car reviews

  1. Louisa Kerluke 2024-11-28

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you got a great deal on a well-maintained vehicle. The LTZ trim is a rare find and it's great to hear that it's fully loaded with features like two-tone leather, a Bose stereo, 17-inch aluminum rims, and a chrome grille insert. It's understandable that with age, some maintenance is required, but it's great to hear that it was nothing drastic and you were able to take care of it. As for the driver's seat, it can be tough to find the perfect position, but hopefully, you'll find a comfortable spot soon. And while it's a shame that the Bose stereo requires a higher volume, it's still a great feature to have. Enjoy your new ride!

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned! I have been getting 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway since the day I bought it. Other than regular maintenance, I have only spent $210 on it in 6 years.

  3. Leo Abbott 2024-09-01

This SUV is truly wonderful. I managed to purchase it for only $100 over the invoice price. Although the buying experience was a bit rough due to the dealer, I am confident in my decision. The vehicle drives great and offers many more standard features than comparable Ford SUVs.

  4. Junius Cremin 2024-07-11

This is a great SUV! Mine is a 2003 model, fully loaded. I've had no problems with it until now, but it has reached 199,999 miles. Most of the parts are still original. I will miss her.

  5. Hollis O'Connell 2024-07-10

This is my first truck, first 4WD, and first tow vehicle. The I6 engine performs well with my family of five, two kayaks on top, and a 27' x 4,300# UVW Wilderness trailer behind. Having a third seat is a must for us. Although I don't like the front seat belts, I'm still getting around 9-11 MPG while towing and as high as 21 MPG on the highway with just passengers. Overall, I'm very happy with my choice, especially with the high gas prices. However, I do wish the body sheet metal had higher standards as it looks like it may have had some body work done. Toyota would not sell a vehicle with this quality! I did notice that the Durango wheel base is too short and I've seen some with flipped trailers, so I'll stick to flatland with the load I'm pulling. The TB Ext SUV pulls safely and I'm grateful for that.
