Porsche 911 problems
The Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelf) is a two-door 2+2 high performance rear-engined sports car introduced in September 1964 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a rear-mounted flat-six engine and originally a torsion bar suspension. The car has been continuously enhanced through the years but the basic concept has remained unchanged. The engines were air-cooled until the introduction of the 996 series in 1998.
The 911 has been raced extensively by private and factory teams, in a variety of classes. It is among the most successful competition cars. In the mid-1970s, the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR won world championship races including Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. Porsche won the World Championship for Makes in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 with 911-derived models.
In a 1999 poll to determine the Car of the Century, the 911 was fifth. It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003). The one millionth example was manufactured in May 2017 and is in the company's permanent collection.

Common Porsche 911 problems
The Porsche 911, known for its iconic design and performance, is not immune to common problems that can affect its overall ownership experience. This article will explore various issues reported by Porsche 911 owners, focusing on the 997 and 991 generations.
1. Cracked Coil Packs:
A misfiring engine can be a sign of cracked coil packs, which are relatively inexpensive to replace. This issue can be identified during a test drive, and addressing it promptly can prevent further damage to the engine.
2. Faulty Alternator Cables:
Early Porsche 997 models may experience decreased battery life and run-time due to faulty alternator cables. Replacing these cables with upgraded alternator cables is a straightforward job, but routing can be tricky on 997s.
3. Damaged Radiators:
The coolant radiators and aircon condensers in the nose of the 997 are prone to leakage. Regularly checking the state of the radiator and addressing any issues promptly can prevent further damage to the engine.
4. Internal Leak at the Oil Separator:
This issue can cause rapid oil consumption, smoke, and fuel trim problems in Porsche 911 models. Rectifying this problem typically requires the replacement of the oil separator by a mechanic, along with fixing any resulting issues.
5. Coolant Loss and Engine Overheating:
A small leak in the coolant reservoir can lead to coolant loss and engine overheating. Resolving the coolant loss and resulting overheating is necessary to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of the engine.
6. Oil Leak at Rear Main Seal/Intermediate Support Cover O-Ring:
This issue can be fixed via a revised engine seal, with a precise diagnosis required to confirm the dimensional accuracy of the area from the crankshaft to the engine block.
7. Transmission Issues:
PDK Transmission in the 991 generation of the Porsche 911 can occasionally experience issues with rough shifting or hesitation. Software updates or a transmission service may resolve these issues.
8. Cooling System Issues:
Radiator clogging with road debris and water pump failure can lead to engine damage in the 991 generation of the Porsche 911. Regularly inspecting the cooling system and replacing the water pump when necessary can prevent these issues.
9. Suspension and Steering Issues:
Uneven tire wear and power steering failure or loss of steering assist can be caused by a failing electric power steering motor or other electrical issues in the 991 generation of the Porsche 911.
10. Electrical and Software Issues:
Mechanical valve failure and infotainment glitches can occur in the 991 generation of the Porsche 911. Updates to the system software may resolve these problems.
11. Battery Drain:
Some 991 models have been known to experience battery drain, which can result in a dead battery after extended periods of inactivity. Installing a battery maintainer when the vehicle is not in use can help prevent this issue.
12. Body and Paint Issues:
Stone chips on the paint can be an issue for the 991 generation of the Porsche 911. Protective film or ceramic coatings can help prevent damage to the paint.
These common problems reported by Porsche 911 owners highlight the importance of regular maintenance and addressing issues as soon as they arise to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Porsche 911 1997
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-06
- Date Complaint: 2022-08-07
- VIN: WP0DA2995VS
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: This is the second time this brand of tire has slipped off the wheel while on the Highway at 55 miles an hour or better. It put me as the driver at severe risk and the car has been damaged twice now. The tire size is Continentals Sport Plus 265/35 ZR 18. They were like new with little mileage. This is a collector item car and cost to repair is great, not to mention how it has forever created a fear in me, of having this happen again. I could have been severely injured if I was not such a good driver. I believe it is tire failure as the tire ripped from itself. There is still tire left on the edge of the rim. AAA saw the damage when they came to put on the spare. I will show it to my tire store this week as it happened on a weekend and they were closed. I will also have my car inspected for damage this week. I did take photos both times. Since this is the second time this has happened with the same type of tire, I believe it to be the tire being faulty and is a high risk for severe injury.
Porsche 911 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-15
- Date Complaint: 2022-01-21
- VIN: WP0CB2A92ES
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Both driver and passenger side door panels are failing causing them to raise due to failed seal and/or glue used in production. This has been inspected by the Porsche dealer and has been deemed a failure from the factory. This issue has caused for not only visibility issues and accessibility to door locks and windows, but could potentially impact the functionality and safety of the overall side airbag operation. This is a known issue based on the responses I have received from the dealership and Porsche factory representatives on the model 911 Carerra and other Porsche models.
Porsche 911 2000
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-22
- Date Complaint: 2021-12-02
- VIN: WP0CA299XYS
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Driving gently at 50mph down a smooth road the tire suddenly deflated; I pulled over to swap it out for the spare. On examination of the tire the inner side wall delaminated in 2 places, I could find no reason for the failure. There are no screws or nails or other damage that would explain why it deflated other than the sidewall delaminating. The car had an oil change 4 days before the tire incident and the tire was examined and found to be at the correct pressure. The rubber around the failures seems soft and tears easily. I have a matching set of these tires on my car, same brand and type. I did some searching and found a recall on this brand tire which describes exactly the failure I experienced; when I called the manufacturer they told me my tire does not fall under the recall.

Porsche 911 1995
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-05
- Date Complaint: 2014-12-10
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: RECENTLY, I PURCHASED TIE RODS FOR MY 1995 PORSCHE 911. I ORDERED THROUGH ECS TUNING (ORDER #: [XXX]), SHIPPED TO MY HOME. I INSPECTED THE TIE RODS, AND WHILE NOT IDENTICAL TO THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURERS PARTS, THEY LOOKED SUBSTANTIALLY THE SAME. I INSTALLED THE TIE RODS (MADE BY HAMBURG TECHNIC) WITHOUT INSTALLATION DIFFICULTY. AS YOU ARE AWARE, TIE RODS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE STEERING SYSTEM AND ARE DESIGNED TO BE ADJUSTED FOR WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I EYEBALLED THE ALIGNMENT AND PROMPTLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MERCHANTS TIRE AND AUTO (3419 HWY 17 S, MURRELLS INLET, SC 29576, 843-651-4816) FOR A PROFESSIONAL ALIGNMENT ON A HUNTER LASER RACK. AS THE VEHICLE WAS BEING BACKED UP AT THEIR FACILITY, THE LEFT INNER TIE ROD SEGMENT SEPARATED. THE INNER SLEEVE BECAME COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED FROM THE OUTER SLEEVE, RENDERING THE CAR INCAPACITATED. I DON'T KNOW HOW I MANAGED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE WITHOUT THEM SEPARATING ON THE ROAD, LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT. AS I HAD ORDERED 2 SETS OF TIE RODS, I RETURNED HOME AND GOT THE SECOND SET, AND THEY PUSHED THE CAR INTO A SERVICE BAY. THEY REPLACED THE TIE RODS WITH THE SECOND SET. WHILE BACKING THE CAR OUT OF THE SERVICE BAY, TO MOVE IT TO THE ALIGNMENT RACK, THE LEFT TIE ROD SEPARATED AGAIN, RENDERING THE CAR INCAPACITATED FOR THE SECOND TIME. AS THERE IS CLEARLY A DESIGN OR MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH THESE PARTS, I OBTAINED TIE RODS FROM ANOTHER VENDOR. THOSE TIE RODS WERE PLACED ON THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ISSUE, AND AN ALIGNMENT WAS SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

PORSCHE NORTH AMERICA HAS VERIFIED THE PROBLEM, DEEMING IT A "CHARACTERISTIC", NOT A DEFECT. THE DEALER, THE AUTOGALLERY HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM, ONE OF IT'S SALESMEN DEEMING IT SO MUCH GLARE AS TO BE "UNDRIVABLE". BEVERLY HILLS PORSCHE HAS VERIFIED THE PROBLEM AND TOLD ME OF NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS. A PERUSAL OF THE INTERNET REVEALS MANY OTHER OWNER COMPLAINTS. AT VARIOUS TIMES, PORSCHE AND THE DEALER HAVE OFFERED TO HAVE SOMETHING MADE FOR THE DASH, BUT THEY HAVE RENEGED ON THAT OFFER (THEY INDUCED ONE CUSTOMER WHO WAS COMPLAINING TO TRADE THE CAR FOR A MORE EXPENSIVE MODEL WITH DARK DASH). THEY HAVE MADE OTHER OFFERS E.G SUNGLASSES, BUT THEY HAVE FAILED TO TAKE ANY STEPS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. A CASUAL REVIEW OF DASHES IN OTHER CARS, BY WALKING THROUGH PARKING LOTS, REVEALS THAT NO OTHER CAR HAS NEARLY AS MANY VENTS AND OPENINGS ON UPPER DASH, OR GLARE EVEN APPROACHING THAT OF THIS MODEL. IN SHORT, THE CAR IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE-PARTICULARLY IN SUNLIGHT AND SHOULD BE RECALLED OR THE GLARE PROBLEM REMEDIED. I ASK THAT YOU VIEW MY CAR, OR SIMILAR MODEL, DRIVE THE CAR IN SUNLIGHT AND EVALUATE THIS HAZARDOUS CONDITION. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO MAKE THE CAR AVAILABLE TO NHTSA AT ANY REASONABLE TIME. *TR

This is a fantastic drivers car with plenty of power. However, there are a few things to be aware of. Firstly, it is a performance car with a suspension that may be more firm than what you are used to. This means that you will feel every nuance of the road, both good and bad. Secondly, there may be some squeaks and rattles from interior bits that are unbecoming of a vehicle of this caliber. My old 356 Porsche's were far quieter in this regard. Thirdly, the fuel economy is amazing. Over 15,000 miles, I've averaged 22 mpg. Lastly, if you like to do your own maintenance, Porsche makes this extremely difficult. Unfortunately, Porsche does not make any technical information available to the public, including how much oil it takes to do an oil change. This corporate policy begs for the adoption of

You've had 3 911's since 1968, and each one has been better than the previous one. They're faster, handle better, look great, and are easy to drive. They've always been your everyday driver. This 2021 911S is so much fun, it almost feels illegal. It has plenty of power, brakes strong and straight, and corners with the best of them. It's just a blast to drive. While it may be expensive, it's definitely worth it as it will last you for 15 years easily. If you can, go for it! YOLO!

This car is so much fun to drive! I absolutely love the beautiful exterior design and the quiet convertible top. The most impressive part of the design is the way the top automatically folds into the rear. My only suggestion would be to include some high-end interior features, such as cup holders and storage space for CDs, especially considering the price point. Additionally, the stereo could be improved to match the overall quality of the car.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Porsche. It has 60,000 miles on it and I've owned 4 Porsches in total. I must say, this is the finest, most comfortable, and reliable Porsche series ever built! Although they can be expensive to maintain, I take mine exclusively to Porsche and it runs perfectly. I'm even getting 18-19 mpg in the city, which is rare for an exotic car. The key is maintenance. It's important to replace the distributor every 50k due to the belts inside, which costs approximately $2800 with a proper tune-up. Additionally, when the engine seals need to be replaced (there are quite a few of them), it costs around $2000 total. However, when serviced properly, they don't leak oil. Lastly, the A/C and heat work wonderfully, unlike older models with the red, pull-up lever that freezes before the heat kicks in. I hope this information is helpful to you!

It's really unfortunate to hear that you've been experiencing constant problems with your Porsche, especially considering that it has less than 4k miles. It must be frustrating to have to deal with these issues. It seems like Porsche has not been very helpful in resolving the situation, which is disappointing. Please know that we are here to support you and will do everything we can to help you find a solution.

I purchased my car used with 9,500 miles on it, thinking that buying through a dealer was the right choice. However, at just over 15k miles, the shift fork for 1 and 2 gear cracked. I contacted Porsche and wrote a letter, and they informed me that the original cast fork had a known weakness. They kindly paid the $150 for replacement with a new, updated, forged piece. Unfortunately, I was responsible for the $4600 labor and miscellaneous parts bill. I had a negative experience with this dealer and would not recommend them to others. It's important to be cautious when making a purchase.
Thank you for reading.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Porsche 911, which I've had for 11 months now since it was new in 2015. It's been a great ride so far, with only 5,000 miles on it. I had another Porsche 911 with a manual transmission about 10 years ago, and it was awesome. Recently, I took my Porsche in for an oil change and to get the rims cleaned up. Unfortunately, a few days later, I received a call from my service rep telling me that they are having an issue with the transmission. The car won't move, and there are no signs of any transmission issues before this. Everyone at the dealer and Porsche is working on it, but they are not sure what happened. I'm a bit upset about it. I was wondering if anyone out there has had any issues with their transmission on a new Porsche 911? I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. Thank you so much!

Although I had high hopes for this car, the PDK transmission and cramped interior made for a disappointing experience. As a 6-foot, 190-pound individual, I found the space to be quite tight.

Hi there! As a car collector, I have high standards and unfortunately, this car doesn't quite meet them. I find it uncomfortable and the cockpit is a bit confusing, with some things being hard to reach. Is there anything that can be done to improve these issues?
