The Porsche 911 (pronounced Nine Eleven or in German: Neunelf) is a two-door 2+2 high performance rear-engined sports car introduced in September 1964 by Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany. It has a rear-mounted flat-six engine and originally a torsion bar suspension. The car has been continuously enhanced through the years but the basic concept has remained unchanged. The engines were air-cooled until the introduction of the 996 series in 1998.

The 911 has been raced extensively by private and factory teams, in a variety of classes. It is among the most successful competition cars. In the mid-1970s, the naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSR won world championship races including Targa Florio and the 24 Hours of Daytona. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. Porsche won the World Championship for Makes in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979 with 911-derived models.

In a 1999 poll to determine the Car of the Century, the 911 was fifth. It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003). The one millionth example was manufactured in May 2017 and is in the company's permanent collection.

  • Summary: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Porsche 911, Boxster, and Cayman vehicles manufactured May 7, 2014, to September 23, 2014. The front hood upper lock components were not manufactured to specification and may fail to securely latch the vehicle's hood during operation.
  • Consequence: A failure of the hood latching mechanism may cause the hood to suddenly open during vehicle operation and will severely impede the driver's ability to see out the front windshield, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Porsche will notify owners, and dealers will replace the lock on the front hood, free of charge. The recall began December 12, 2014. Owners may contact Porsche customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is AE04.

    Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Porsche 911, which I've had for 11 months now since it was new in 2015. It's been a great ride so far, with only 5,000 miles on it. I had another Porsche 911 with a manual transmission about 10 years ago, and it was awesome. Recently, I took my Porsche in for an oil change and to get the rims cleaned up. Unfortunately, a few days later, I received a call from my service rep telling me that they are having an issue with the transmission. The car won't move, and there are no signs of any transmission issues before this. Everyone at the dealer and Porsche is working on it, but they are not sure what happened. I'm a bit upset about it. I was wondering if anyone out there has had any issues with their transmission on a new Porsche 911? I would really appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. Thank you so much!

    UPDATE: PORSCHE Corporate (Atlanta) does not appear to regulate its dealerships in terms of customer service. I have had some issues with both local dealerships when trying to get simple services performed. It can be difficult to get a hold of them and they rarely answer the phone at the service departments. This has been my experience with two separate Porsche dealerships in the Puget Sound (WA) area. Despite this, the car itself is great. This is my third Porsche and the 400 hp 3.8 engine is incredible. The throttle response is immediate and the sound is roaring when you want it to be. Reliability is second to none and the average cost of maintaining it is around $1,200 a year, which is similar to my 2007 Cayman S. The interior is stunning and refined to the highest standard. The controls in the cockpit are well laid-out, although the Navigation address input could be improved. The cabin is luxurious, stylish, crisp and refined. The 14-way seats, cooled seats and the amazing cabin audio from the engine's 'symposer' system is an orgasmic combination. The 'Sport Exhaust' option with the top down is a must-try. The PDK with Sport Chrono (sport plus) 'paddle shifters' is faster than any manual shifter on the planet, more reliable and just common sense. The looks are stunning on both the Cabriolet and Coupe. Thank you for considering Porsche.Thanks to the Cabrio's magnesium-panelled convertible top, the continuity of the 991 lines is preserved in a rigid form. The available color contrast of the body and canvas top can make your 911 stand out drastically. I would suggest replacing the plain fence board wing with a ducktail (sport design tail) on the Cabrio - it looks much more aggressive. But, no matter what you decide, the Cabriolet is an entirely different creature under the sun. It simply screams freedom! You can't beat that, no matter what hardtop Porsche you have.

The 911 is widely regarded as one of the most refined vehicles ever created, with each generation improving upon the last. Personally, I found the sunroof to be a surprising must-have feature, and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering purchasing this car. Having owned a Honda Prelude, Acura, Lexus, Ford Mustang, and a Cayman, I can confidently say that the 911 outperforms them all by a mile. While the Cayman S does give it some competition, even the base 911 is a supercar with exceptional everyday driving capabilities.
