2006 Pontiac Torrent problems
The Pontiac Torrent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors for the 2006 to 2009 model years. A replacement for the Aztek, it was a mildly restyled version of the first-generation Chevrolet Equinox. The Torrent shared its basic body structure and mechanicals with the Equinox. However, the Torrent has a different front and rear end to distinguish it visually from the Equinox. The suspension was also modified to be firmer and sportier, and the electronic power steering was recalibrated to deliver a firmer, less artificial feel.
Design
The Torrent shared the Equinox's 185 hp (138 kW; 188 PS) 3.4 L V6 with the 5-Speed Aisin AF33 automatic transmission.
Like other Pontiac models in the lineup, trim levels of the Torrent were entry-level Base, mid-level GT, and performance-oriented GXP. The GXP featured a more powerful 3.6-liter DOHC SFI V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, along with a unique body kit and other exterior styling cues.

JUST LAST WEEK AT ONLY 101K MILES THE FRONT LEFT HUB WAS BAD AGAIN!! THAT MAKES 5 TIMES ON THAT ALONE. VARIOUS OTHER ISSUES INCLUDE MULTIPLE ABS SENSORS FAILING PREMATURELY MORE THAN ONCE. I GET ANNUAL ALIGNMENTS, BRAND NEW TIRES ANUALLY, HAVE REPLACED STRUTS AND SPRINGS AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THE ENTIRE BOTTOM IS RUSTING OUT THE WORST HE'S EVER SEEN FOR A VEHICLE. When I was deciding which car to buy, I test drove both the Torrent and its Chevy sister, the Equinox. Ultimately, I chose the Torrent because of its soft and comfortable upholstery, which was much nicer than the scratchy upholstery in the Equinox. The Torrent has proven to be a comfortable vehicle, even for tall passengers in the back seat. While the exterior is sharp, the interior could use a touch of class. I did notice three design flaws, however: (1) Although I don't smoke, I think a removable ashtray should be standard for things like gum wrappers; (2) The CD storage area is not easily accessible; and (3) A wider cargo compartment would have been more beneficial than having the small side storage wells. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any mechanical problems (knock on wood). Overall, I think the Torrent is a nice vehicle, and I was pleased to take advantage of GM's 0% financing offer.
-
The torrent has a smooth ride. The controls are easy to use. The only things that are not easy are the cup holders and ash tray, which are in an awkward position. However, the torrent is very comfortable on long trips and the sound system is terrific.
-
I fell in love with the Equinox, UNTIL I drove the Torrent. We traded in the mini-van and I could not be happier. It has plenty of room in the back seat for the kids and the interior is great. I am loving this car. It's fun to drive and it looks sporty and fresh. Great vehicle!

You've had the car for over three years and it has proven to be very reliable. You haven't had any issues with the tires, brakes, or wheel bearings, and it still performs well. On a recent trip from Denver to St Louis, you were able to achieve an average mileage of 24-25 mpg, which is impressive. It also handles well in snowy conditions. While it may not be as fun to drive as your Honda Accord, you appreciate the spacious interior and cargo capacity. In fact, it can even haul more than a Jeep Commander!

We had an amazing trip! We started in Alabama and made our way to Branson, Mo, then headed to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon, and finally made our way to Yellowstone Park before heading back to Alabama. Overall, the trip was fantastic and we had a wonderful time!

Although we initially loved the appearance of this car and experienced a solid first year, we have since encountered numerous issues. We have had to replace all four wheel bearings and the paint began flaking off around 50k, resulting in a large spot on the driver side and tailgate. Despite having purchased a supplemental rust protectant, our dealer informed us that the issue with the paint was not covered. However, we are confident in our decision to purchase this car and will continue to address any issues that arise.
Max Fahey 2025-01-03
The paint on the driver's side rear wheel began peeling after four years, and unfortunately, the dealer dismissed the issue as it was off warranty. However, the paint has now started peeling on multiple other areas of the car, including the tailgate, front passenger 1/4 panel, rear driver 1/4 panel, and inside the rear passenger door. It is important to note that this is not the result of normal wear and tear, and inferior paint has been identified as a known issue on 2006 models. I am confident that GM will take responsibility for this issue and provide a satisfactory resolution.

This is my first GM product and my first SUV. The interior is great - spacious and comfortable. However, I have encountered an issue with carbon buildup in the cylinders at only 21,000 miles, despite using high-quality fuel. While GM has suggested a temporary solution, I believe it is important to identify and address the root cause of the problem. Despite this setback, I have enjoyed driving the SUV, which offers a smooth and quiet ride.
Cielo Olson 2024-11-16
The front and rear seats could use some improvement. The overall mileage is 14.5 mpg in Summer and 12.5 mpg in Winter. It would be great if GM could focus more on customer satisfaction. There is a 'skunk smell' issue due to poor QC of radiator hose-curing, which requires a dealer flush. Unfortunately, GM never notifies the owner of this problem. The shifting transmission could be better. The rear strut towers intrude into the rear cargo area, which is not ideal. If you're looking for an SUV, you might want to consider a Toyota or Honda.

Although I appreciate the driving experience, the vehicle's appearance, and its comfortable interior, the cost of maintaining this lease has been quite high. The first two wheel bearings were covered under the lease at 20,000 kms, but unfortunately, the remaining four on all tires were not. I have recently noticed the familiar humming sound again, which means I will have to pay another $350 out of my pocket. In addition, the alternator failed at 72,000 km, costing me $1,000. The tires, rotors, and brakes were also replaced around the same time. Recently, the paint on the driver's side and back started chipping, and the entire vehicle will require a paint job. Despite these challenges, I am confident that this vehicle is worth the investment.
