The Pontiac Torrent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors for the 2006 to 2009 model years. A replacement for the Aztek, it was a mildly restyled version of the first-generation Chevrolet Equinox. The Torrent shared its basic body structure and mechanicals with the Equinox. However, the Torrent has a different front and rear end to distinguish it visually from the Equinox. Design
The Torrent shared the Equinox's 185 hp (138 kW; 188 PS) 3.4 L V6 with the 5-Speed Aisin AF33 automatic transmission.
Like other Pontiac models in the lineup, trim levels of the Torrent were entry-level Base, mid-level GT, and performance-oriented GXP. The GXP featured a more powerful 3.6-liter DOHC SFI V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, along with a unique body kit and other exterior styling cues.

- Summary: Steering gone out while driving times 3 with 2 replacements and now in shop for 3rd replacement. Nearly hit a lady. Time before, I nearly went over an embankment. Steering column has been entirely replaced twice. The electric steering motor has also been replaced 2 to 3 times as well. Numerous times have lost the ability to steer when in a curve but then later corrected itself and continued driving. ABS light is on most of the time and yes it has been looked at numerous times. Stabilitrac light is on and again, yes, this has been looked at numerous times. Traction control light is also on again. Seat belt sensor light is on and has been for a long time. Now, I really cannot afford repairs once again for something that needs a recall. I have read hundreds of other people also making these same reports in NHTSA comments. Please, people are going to get killed if not already. Now, I also see that these steering columns are being sent back to the manufacturer and the same defective modules are being replaced and then sent back out to replace another vehicles defective part while charging the customer full price yet again. A repairman stated to me that the defective part was being replaced with another defective part and was really useless repairs. Will you please buy this lemon back from me. It has nearly costed me and my families life numerous times plus others. Please recall these parts. Please make it possible for me to get a different vehicle. This started in less than a year from the purchase of the new vehicle when we had the first steering column replaced. Would you want your spouse or child driving these vehicles?

This is a dealer only part which they gave me an estimate to fix of $900 if I could get a aftermarket part I would replace myself. Come on Gm recall this ongoing serious safety hazard!!!!

When I was deciding which car to buy, I test drove both the Torrent and its Chevy sister, the Equinox. Ultimately, I chose the Torrent because of its soft and comfortable upholstery, which was much nicer than the scratchy upholstery in the Equinox. The Torrent has proven to be a comfortable vehicle, even for tall passengers in the back seat. While the exterior is sharp, the interior could use a touch of class. I did notice three design flaws, however: (1) Although I don't smoke, I think a removable ashtray should be standard for things like gum wrappers; (2) The CD storage area is not easily accessible; and (3) A wider cargo compartment would have been more beneficial than having the small side storage wells. Fortunately, I haven't experienced any mechanical problems (knock on wood). Overall, I think the Torrent is a nice vehicle, and I was pleased to take advantage of GM's 0% financing offer.

Great job on utilizing the space! The back seat is exceptionally roomy and the flat floor is a nice touch. The fold down rear seat operation is also great, as it folds flat with one hand and misses the front seats with room to spare. It's impressive that this SUV is relatively light (3800 lbs.) yet still has so much room. It also tows well with a 2500 lb. U haul. The exterior appearance is rich and eye-catching, especially in silver with 17 inch wheels. Overall, it sounds like you're satisfied with the build quality!

The torrent has a smooth ride. The controls are easy to use. The only things that are not easy are the cup holders and ash tray, which are in an awkward position. However, the torrent is very comfortable on long trips and the sound system is terrific.

What can I say? The black on black with 17-inch wheels looks sexy and is fun to drive. I opted for the 3.4, but I can only imagine how incredible the 3.8 must be! I love the OnStar feature, but I do wish the front cup holders were better. When you take off, the 5-speed transmission is so smooth that you have to watch out for speeding tickets! I gave up my Stow & Go Chrysler Town & Country and have no regrets!

The Torrent was a great choice for me when I needed to upgrade to a larger car due to a new baby, but didn't want to go for a huge SUV. Not only is the Torrent's size just right, but it also looks cool, drives very well, and has great leg room in both the front and rear seats. The V-6 engine really goes when you need it to, and it handles corners better than our '02 Corolla did. The gas mileage is acceptable for a car this size, and the 3500lb towing capacity is enough for all our needs. If you're looking for value and options, a loaded Torrent can be had for under $30K. I chose the Torrent after considering the Rav4, CR-V, Trailblazer, and HHR.

This is a great riding cross over type SUV that gets excellent gas mileage on the highway - about 25 to 26. While the controls are pretty good, the base model's steering and handling may not meet your expectations. However, the GXP model has a different and tighter steering system that you may prefer. The center console could be more useful as it lacks storage and the center mounted power window buttons are not intuitive.

The front and rear seats could use some improvement. The overall mileage is 14.5 mpg in Summer and 12.5 mpg in Winter. It would be great if GM could focus more on customer satisfaction. There is a 'skunk smell' issue due to poor QC of radiator hose-curing, which requires a dealer flush. Unfortunately, GM never notifies the owner of this problem. The shifting transmission could be better. The rear strut towers intrude into the rear cargo area, which is not ideal. If you're looking for an SUV, you might want to consider a Toyota or Honda.

Although I appreciate the driving experience, the vehicle's appearance, and its comfortable interior, the cost of maintaining this lease has been quite high. The first two wheel bearings were covered under the lease at 20,000 kms, but unfortunately, the remaining four on all tires were not. I have recently noticed the familiar humming sound again, which means I will have to pay another $350 out of my pocket. In addition, the alternator failed at 72,000 km, costing me $1,000. The tires, rotors, and brakes were also replaced around the same time. Recently, the paint on the driver's side and back started chipping, and the entire vehicle will require a paint job. Despite these challenges, I am confident that this vehicle is worth the investment.

Hi there! I purchased my Torrent used with 70,000 miles on it. At around 80K, I had to replace a wheel bearing and fix the heating. Unfortunately, by 90K, I had blown head gaskets twice. I decided to put a new motor in it with only 44K miles on it, and it's running much smoother now. However, my engine light stays on at all times. Now, at almost 95K miles on the body, I need to replace the struts and get another set of tires. I'm looking forward to paying off this car and moving on from GM. Thanks for listening!

I bought my 2006 Pontiac Torrent used, but 'GM certified'. Unfortunately, the day after I drove it off the lot, I had to take it back for an oil pan seal. Luckily, the dealer covered that since I had the car less than 24 hours. However, I have had some issues with the car since then. I have had to replace several parts, including tires, wheel bearings, rear end, carrier bearing, CV axles, brakes and rotors, ball joints, control arms, EGR tube, ABS sensor, factory radio, cruise control, steering column, windshield washer motor, and windshield. Despite my efforts to keep the car in good condition, it seems to require frequent repairs. I have decided to get a second vehicle as this one is in the shop so much. The interior is also showing some wear and tear, with paint coming off the door handles and radio surround. I would recommend avoiding this vehicle due to the high cost of repairs.
