The Pontiac Torrent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors for the 2006 to 2009 model years. A replacement for the Aztek, it was a mildly restyled version of the first-generation Chevrolet Equinox. The Torrent shared its basic body structure and mechanicals with the Equinox. However, the Torrent has a different front and rear end to distinguish it visually from the Equinox. The suspension was also modified to be firmer and sportier, and the electronic power steering was recalibrated to deliver a firmer, less artificial feel.
Design
The Torrent shared the Equinox's 185 hp (138 kW; 188 PS) 3.4 L V6 with the 5-Speed Aisin AF33 automatic transmission.
Like other Pontiac models in the lineup, trim levels of the Torrent were entry-level Base, mid-level GT, and performance-oriented GXP. The GXP featured a more powerful 3.6-liter DOHC SFI V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, along with a unique body kit and other exterior styling cues.

- Summary: Steering gone out while driving times 3 with 2 replacements and now in shop for 3rd replacement. Nearly hit a lady. Time before, I nearly went over an embankment. Steering column has been entirely replaced twice. The electric steering motor has also been replaced 2 to 3 times as well. Numerous times have lost the ability to steer when in a curve but then later corrected itself and continued driving. ABS light is on most of the time and yes it has been looked at numerous times. Stabilitrac light is on and again, yes, this has been looked at numerous times. Traction control light is also on again. Seat belt sensor light is on and has been for a long time. Now, I really cannot afford repairs once again for something that needs a recall. I have read hundreds of other people also making these same reports in NHTSA comments. Please, people are going to get killed if not already. Now, I also see that these steering columns are being sent back to the manufacturer and the same defective modules are being replaced and then sent back out to replace another vehicles defective part while charging the customer full price yet again. A repairman stated to me that the defective part was being replaced with another defective part and was really useless repairs. Will you please buy this lemon back from me. It has nearly costed me and my families life numerous times plus others. Please recall these parts. Please make it possible for me to get a different vehicle. This started in less than a year from the purchase of the new vehicle when we had the first steering column replaced. Would you want your spouse or child driving these vehicles?

This is a serious problem because when air bag light is on it disables the air bags which won’t deploy in a crash. I found that they recall the 2007 models for this exact problem, Now is the time to recall the 2008 for the exact same problem. This is a dealer only part which they gave me an estimate to fix of $900 if I could get a aftermarket part I would replace myself. Come on Gm recall this ongoing serious safety hazard!!!!

- Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, or Texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, or Texas. Love the car! Getting in and out is great, and the interior is very roomy. However, I understand your frustration with the cup holders. Have you considered looking for alternative cup holders that might better suit your needs? I'm sure there are plenty of options out there that could solve this problem for you.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you've had a Torrent for the past 11 months. I wanted to share my experience with you as well. After driving a Montana Mini van for five years, I found the interior room of the Torrent to be a bit smaller. The floor gear shift lever takes up quite a bit of room, especially for the right front passenger. Additionally, there isn't enough leg room for stretching out, even with either front seat all the way back. However, I have found that the motor is sufficient and it has been a reliable vehicle so far. It should remain that way for years to come. The AWD is great in snow when driven with care. I bought this SUV new off the showroom floor and it has now clocked 325k miles. It still pulls our pop-up camper with ease. The only real issue we've had was a cracked flexplate at around 180k miles. The front hubs seem to go out around 80k miles, but I replace them myself for around $100 each. Overall, it has been a very reliable SUV. It's a shame that it's not made anymore. The suspension has a sporty feel, which sets it apart from other GM SUVs. My wife still doesn't want to get rid of it, but we're keeping an eye out for a lower mileage Torrent to replace it. Edmunds asked for an update and I'm happy to report that it's still going strong at 335k miles. We had to replace one coolant pipe due to rust and the trans cooler lines at 340k miles due to leakage. The total cost for both was around $100 for parts and fluids. Otherwise, we've had no issues.

I recently purchased my '08 Torrent GXP in Carbon Black, and I am absolutely thrilled with it! The car came fully loaded with a DVD entertainment system, complete with a pair of Panasonic wireless headphones, as well as OnStar and XM radio. The sound system is fantastic, and movies sound amazing coming out of the car's speakers. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wireless headphones - they sound great! One of my favourite features is the 60/40 rear seat, which can slide almost 8 inches. The GXP's 264 hp engine is incredibly powerful, providing plenty of get up and go, and making it perfect for towing. I recently drove mine through the Rocky Mountains while towing over 3000 lbs, and it handled the very steep grades with ease. As my first SUV, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

This was by far my favorite car I have owned. I too was recently in a serious collision on a busy highway and walked away without a scratch, only because of the vehicle I was driving. It had tons of room, handled like a dream, and gas wasn't so bad either! The only problem I had was the front wheel bearings went in my first 6 months of owning, but they were replaced by my warranty no problem. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

I have taken my 2006 Torrent in for repairs more times than I would like to admit. The issue that concerns me the most is that I have had to replace the bearings three times in the past 23,000 miles. This is not a typical occurrence, is it? Although it is no longer under warranty, the shop will not cover the cost of replacing the bearings again. Despite my frustration, I am confident that a solution can be found. Do you have any advice?

Good looks inside and out help make up for the lack of HP (185) in comparison to some other SUVs. However, the A/C may not work as well in hot weather, according to the dealer. It works great in cool/mild weather though. Overall, it's a fun ride and very roomy, especially with the sliding back seat.

I own a 2006 AWD Pontiac Torrant SUV, which I purchased with 11,000 miles on it as a loaner car. Despite a few issues, I love my Torrant. While living in the south, having a functioning AC is a must, and unfortunately, I have experienced some problems with it. Despite taking it to my dealer and another, they were unable to find anything wrong. However, after replacing parts and working on several things, they believed it was fixed. Unfortunately, it still occasionally malfunctions. Currently, my Torrant is in the shop due to it quitting while I was driving. However, I have confidence in my dealership, who are working hard to repair it. The defective code B2105 com lost with ECM BCM to PCM is still a problem, but I am optimistic that it will be resolved soon.

I am confident that I can find the source of the leak. Despite having to use the spare tire in the middle of winter and chipping ice in the middle of a snow storm to access it, I was able to remove the trailer plug without damaging any wires. However, I have noticed that car washes and heavy rain tend to fill up the compartment where the tire is stored. Despite caulking all possible leak points that I can see, the issue persists. I am certain that with my expertise, I can resolve this matter. Any assistance in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

This small compact SUV has spacious backseats and drives smoothly, making it great for road trips. The gas mileage is not too bad, and it's easy to drive. Although I had some issues with overheating, the problem was resolved after getting the thermostat and radiator replaced. However, I have been experiencing some overheating warnings on the dash recently, but it seems to be a false alarm. Additionally, the airbag warning light has been turning on and off since the beginning, and I've had some ABS issues with it. On the bright side, getting new tires for this vehicle won't break the bank, and the body doesn't rust quickly. It's the perfect height for the average person, not too low or too tall. The only downside is the lack of space and storage compartments. The front cupholders are flimsy and offer no protection, and the other one is too deep down to the floor to be useful. There's no flat surface in this car, and everything is at a slope, so be careful when placing items down. The slots on the doors are also small and skinny, making it difficult to retrieve items. If you prioritize space and storage compartments, this car may not be the best fit for you. Otherwise, it's a great vehicle to consider!
