The Pontiac Torrent is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by General Motors for the 2006 to 2009 model years. A replacement for the Aztek, it was a mildly restyled version of the first-generation Chevrolet Equinox. The Torrent shared its basic body structure and mechanicals with the Equinox. However, the Torrent has a different front and rear end to distinguish it visually from the Equinox. The suspension was also modified to be firmer and sportier, and the electronic power steering was recalibrated to deliver a firmer, less artificial feel.

Design

The Torrent shared the Equinox's 185 hp (138 kW; 188 PS) 3.4 L V6 with the 5-Speed Aisin AF33 automatic transmission.

Like other Pontiac models in the lineup, trim levels of the Torrent were entry-level Base, mid-level GT, and performance-oriented GXP. The GXP featured a more powerful 3.6-liter DOHC SFI V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission, along with a unique body kit and other exterior styling cues.

Stabilitrac light is on and again, yes, this has been looked at numerous times. Traction control light is also on again. Seat belt sensor light is on and has been for a long time. Now, I really cannot afford repairs once again for something that needs a recall. I have read hundreds of other people also making these same reports in NHTSA comments. Please, people are going to get killed if not already. Now, I also see that these steering columns are being sent back to the manufacturer and the same defective modules are being replaced and then sent back out to replace another vehicles defective part while charging the customer full price yet again. A repairman stated to me that the defective part was being replaced with another defective part and was really useless repairs. Will you please buy this lemon back from me. It has nearly costed me and my families life numerous times plus others. Please recall these parts. Please make it possible for me to get a different vehicle. This started in less than a year from the purchase of the new vehicle when we had the first steering column replaced. Would you want your spouse or child driving these vehicles?

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
  • Summary: General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007 Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Texas; model year 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn ION vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, or Texas; model year 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arizona; and model year 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered in, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oklahoma, or Texas. • Consequence: Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Notification to owners began on on November 21, 2012. Owners were instructed to not bring their vehicles in for repair until January 2013. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300.

Latest negative Pontiac Torrent car reviews

  1. Ellis Doyle 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2007

I've found that my Torrent isn't the best vehicle for winter driving. Unfortunately, I've experienced slips and slides and have had trouble getting traction. At stop signs, I often come to a rolling stop because I know it will be difficult to get going again. The traction control hasn't been very effective either. Although it was supposedly fixed, it still doesn't work properly. As a result, I've decided to trade it in for a roomier SUV this fall. Additionally, I was surprised to find that the gas mileage isn't great for a smaller SUV. In town, I can get as low as 9 mpg, and up to 25 on the highway. I was hoping for better mileage given its size.

  2. Lester Fadel 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2008

I purchased my '08 Torrent GXP in 2011 and have enjoyed it immensely. However, I have recently experienced some issues with the power steering hose breaking multiple times, the battery dying at only 44,000 miles, and the all-wheel drive failing in sub-zero temperatures. Despite these setbacks, I still appreciate the comfort, features, and overall driving experience of the Torrent. However, I am now considering purchasing a new car due to these recurring issues. It is worth noting that my previous vehicle, a '04 Malibu 2LT, required minimal maintenance beyond regular oil changes during the 7 years and 80K+ miles that I owned it.

  3. Nico Macejkovic 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2008

I purchased the car when it had 82,000 miles on it. I really like the appearance, the ride quality, the power, and the comfort it provides. However, I have had some issues with it over the past year. In December, I had to replace the transmission which cost me $3000 because it is an AWD vehicle. After that, I experienced some minor issues with the check engine light, but I was able to resolve them by changing the battery. Unfortunately, I recently had to take it to the dealership because of a bad crank sensor, and now several other problems have arisen. Despite the dealership giving up on it without explanation, I still believe that this car is not worth keeping.

  4. Kian Blick 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2009

The Pontiac vehicle has unfortunately experienced some issues, including problems with the radio, lock on the driver's door, rear windshield wiper motor, wheel bearings, and cv shaft. These issues can be costly to repair. It is important to note that the stability control and ABS lights may also turn on and off. However, with my expertise and experience, I can confidently say that these issues can be resolved with proper maintenance and repair.

  5. Thaddeus Murphy 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2007

This is the second brand new vehicle I have leased. I got out of an 05 Canyon thinking the Torrent would be better for the family, but unfortunately, it hasn't met my expectations. I am disappointed with the fuel mileage and the issues caused by the Stabilitrak. Additionally, there is a rumble up the centre of the vehicle every time the roads are just wet, and the lack of control in the snow has been frustrating. I have decided that I will avoid buying another vehicle with AWD and will consider other options in the future. I hope that GM can improve their customer service and assistance in the future.

    Vehicle year: 2009

I purchased my Torrent used with approximately 90,000 miles. Unfortunately, after a few months, I began experiencing engine power and transmission issues, causing the vehicle to lose power and run roughly. Additionally, I encountered problems with the stabilitrac and antilock brakes. Despite seeking assistance from the dealership, they were unable to provide any answers or solutions to the problem. However, after conducting some research, I discovered that replacing the egr valve, plugs, and wires had a domino effect and resolved all of the issues. I decided to undertake the repairs myself, which saved me hundreds of dollars. Since then, I have driven tens of thousands of miles without any further problems.

  2. Jovan Haag 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2006

I bought this car used with only 5K miles on it, and it has been a reliable and comfortable ride ever since. With over 97K miles on it now, I can say that it has been a great investment. The car is spacious, both in terms of seating and cargo space, and it has a smooth ride that makes it fun to drive. While the gas mileage is about 17 city/24 hwy mpg, the car's pros far outweigh the cons. Speaking of cons, I did have to replace the heating/A/C actuator motor at 53K, which cost me $900 at the time. However, it was later discovered to be a GM recall, and the dealer reimbursed me the same day. I also had to replace the wheel bearings at 75K and the bolts on the exhaust at 86K, which is apparently a common problem on Torrent and Equinox models. The slow pick-up at acceleration and odd placement of the window controls in the front seat center console are also minor drawbacks. Overall, I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable ride that won't break the bank.

  3. Moises Dare 2025-02-11

    Vehicle year: 2006

Hey there! I bought my 2006 Pontiac Torrent back in 2009 with only 22k miles on it and it was amazing for the first year and a half. I even drove it through the snow from Memphis, TN to Gatlingburg, and to Hattisburg, MS, Meridian, MS, Jonesboro, AR, and Little Rock, AR with no issues at all! However, during my trip to Little Rock, I started experiencing some transmission problems. I took it to the transmission shop and they said it was a speed sensor. Unfortunately, the speed sensor kept malfunctioning and I had to replace it 4 times before deciding to get rid of the vehicle. Even though my ex-fiancee's aunt replaced the transmission, the problems still persist. On top of that, the paint is peeling.

  4. Khalid Johnson 2025-02-09

I recently purchased my '08 Torrent GXP in Carbon Black, and I am absolutely thrilled with it! The car came fully loaded with a DVD entertainment system, complete with a pair of Panasonic wireless headphones, as well as OnStar and XM radio. The sound system is fantastic, and movies sound amazing coming out of the car's speakers. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wireless headphones - they sound great! One of my favourite features is the 60/40 rear seat, which can slide almost 8 inches. The GXP's 264 hp engine is incredibly powerful, providing plenty of get up and go, and making it perfect for towing. I recently drove mine through the Rocky Mountains while towing over 3000 lbs, and it handled the very steep grades with ease. As my first SUV, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

  5. Conor Kreiger 2025-01-26

    Vehicle year: 2008

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share some feedback I've received from Torrent owners about their vehicles. They all seem to really enjoy their cars, especially the GXP model. It's incredibly fast and handles like a sports car, with a neutral feel in the corners. The fuel efficiency is also impressive, with over 22 mpg. Additionally, it's a very practical car with great utility. If you're in the market for a vehicle like this, I highly recommend giving it a try. I've heard from Honda owners that their smaller CR-V only gets about 1 mpg more and lacks the fun factor. Even Scions, which are slower than molasses, only get about 23.5 mpg. Thank you for considering this recommendation!
