2002 Pontiac Grand am problems
The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Common 2002 Pontiac Grand am problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Pontiac Grand Am 2002, several common problems have been reported:
- Passlock Faulty: Owners have reported issues where nothing happens when turning the key to start the car due to a faulty Passlock system. This problem can be frustrating as it prevents the car from starting, potentially leaving drivers stranded. The Passlock system is a security feature designed to prevent unauthorized starting of the vehicle, but when it malfunctions, it can lead to significant inconvenience and potential safety concerns.
- Intake Manifold Leaking: Another common problem with the Pontiac Grand Am 2002 is a leaking intake manifold gasket. This issue can result in coolant leaks in the engine, leading to overheating problems and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly. Coolant leaks can also cause environmental issues and pose a risk of engine failure if left unresolved.
- Power Window Mechanism Failure: Many Pontiac cars, including the Grand Am 2002, have reported defects in the power window mechanism. The use of cheap plastic parts in the power window pulley assembly can lead to breakages, requiring the entire assembly to be replaced. This problem not only affects the convenience of operating the windows but also adds an unexpected cost for owners to replace the faulty parts.
These common problems with the Pontiac Grand Am 2002 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle. Owners of this car should be aware of these potential issues and take proactive steps to address them to avoid inconvenience and costly repairs.
How reliable is a Pontiac Grand Am?
It's reliable, but not as reliable as a Camry. In blending a Grand Prix and a Trans Am, Pontiac have developed a car that's good at everything, and great at nothing. Fun to drive and priced to move, the Grand Am delivers a sporty feel and a comfortable ride.
How many miles does a Pontiac Grand Am last?
Drivers generally report a minimum mileage of 200,000 before the expensive repairs start to pile up, while some have passed 300,000. Expect to hit anywhere from 225,000 to 250,000 on the original engine and powertrain before your Grand Am is ready for retirement.

2002 Pontiac Grand am recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2002 Pontiac Grand am.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

For the price, the GT model is really fun to drive with a lot of options. It's a great value!
-
I purchased this car brand new in September 2001 and have put 65,000 miles on it since then. While I have had to repair the power window motor four times and replace the turn signal stalk, I have only had to replace the blown intake manifold gasket at 60,000 miles. Unfortunately, the power seat has broken three times and I have given up on having it fixed. Overall, I have spent about $1500 on repairs over the past 7 and a half years, which I don't think is too bad. I have kept up with regular oil changes and have only had to replace the tires and brakes once, at 55,000 miles. I really love this car, but unfortunately, the 3.4s have a history of bad manifold gaskets. I had the same problem with my 95 Grand Prix, but not until it had 165,000 miles on it.
-
The last Grand Am I owned was a '93 model, and it provided me with five years of payment-free driving. Even with nearly 200,000 miles on the clock, it was still running like a dream when I traded it in for the newer style I had my eye on. What a fantastic car!
-
I bought this car in the middle of winter as a gift to myself. Despite the high mileage of 131,000, I couldn't resist purchasing it from a local dealer since it looked so sharp. Surprisingly, I never had any major issues with the car during the two years I owned it, except for regular maintenance and an occasional blown fuse. I drove it like a race car and the handling was incredible. The engine ran like a dream and people really took notice of its awesome monsoon sound system - that thing would boom!
-
This website was so helpful when I was shopping for a new car! I did a lot of research before deciding on the Grand Am GT, and I'm really happy with my choice. It looks great, has plenty of interior space, lots of useful features, excellent performance and handling, and it's priced just right. As someone who drives 25,000 miles per year, this car really meets all my needs. I highly recommend taking one for a test drive - you won't be disappointed!

I got the car when it was 8 years old with only 5,000 miles on it. It was previously owned by my grandmother as an extra car. Since owning it, I haven't had to do anything major on it. The biggest annoyance is that every time something breaks and I can't figure out what's causing the problem, I find the answer online telling me that this happens all the time on this model. There are lots of interior pieces that have broken or warped due to GM using plastics that deteriorate after 5 years, as I was told by a GM employee. Despite these little quirks, the car has never left me stranded. I think it would be a solid first car for some teen. It's as fun to drive as a Honda, which is saying something.

This was your first real car and you absolutely loved it! The car was great in the snow, handled the highway very well and looked so good on the outside that an additional custom paint job on the hood had passers-by turning their heads and giving thumbs up! The GT version is not overly common and you enjoyed having a car that separated you from the cars that your friends drove around.

I purchased this car with 52,000 miles for $11,500. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts such as the front main gasket, window regulators, O2 sensor, air compressor, plugs and wires, and more. Currently, the car is in the shop for repairs on the oil, thermostat, temperature sensors, and power steering pump. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the repairs will be successful. However, based on my experience, I would not recommend this car to others.

This car has had several issues since the beginning. The list of repairs includes: 1) Multiple trips to the shop for water leakage during rain, which unfortunately still persists. 2) Driver side window malfunction. 3) Electric driver seat control failure. 4) Gas gauge sending unit malfunction. 5) Service engine soon light illuminated at 23,000 miles.

Although I have had a few issues with this car, I have taken care of them promptly. I have had to replace the power steering pump, the coolant bottle due to a leak, and the intake manifold seal due to a leak. Additionally, I have had to replace the rotors once and resurface them once. I have also experienced a rough idle and noise from the front end, which the service department has been unable to diagnose. Although the check engine light has come on and off, no stored codes have been found. Despite these challenges, I have been able to manage them while working on the road.
