Common 2009 Mercury Mariner hybrid problems
The Mercury Mariner Hybrid, a compact crossover SUV produced from 2005 to 2011, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues affect various components of the vehicle, including the steering system, transmission, and cooling pump.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is another common problem with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. The transmission is responsible for transferring engine power to the wheels. If the transmission fails, the vehicle may not move at all. Transmission failure can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out gears, low transmission fluid levels, or a faulty torque converter.
- Cooling Pump Failure: The cooling pump is responsible for cooling the electronics that control the hybrid system. If the cooling pump fails, the electronics may overheat, causing the vehicle to suddenly lose power or the engine to shut down. This problem is more common in hybrid models of the Mercury Mariner. Ford issued a recall for Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs manufactured from 2006 to 2010 to replace the original motor electronics coolant pump with an improved brushless pump free of charge.
- Engine Issues: The Mercury Mariner Hybrid has also been reported to have engine issues. Some owners have reported that their engines lose power or stall unexpectedly. This problem can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty electronic throttle body (ETB) or a malfunctioning fuel system.
- Body and Windows: Some Mercury Mariner Hybrid owners have reported issues with the vehicle's body and windows. For example, some owners have reported that their rear windows have exploded without warning. This problem can be caused by various factors, such as manufacturing defects or damage to the window.
In conclusion, the Mercury Mariner Hybrid has several common problems that affect various components of the vehicle. These issues can be addressed by replacing worn-out parts or repairing damaged components. However, some problems, such as cooling pump failure, may require a recall to address the issue. If you own a Mercury Mariner Hybrid, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of your vehicle.

THIS CAR WAS PART OF A CUSTOMER SERVICE ARRANGEMENT WORKED OUT WITH NHTSA BUT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS NOT COVERED FOR COST OF REPLACEMENT . THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. I FEEL THE PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED WITHOUT ANY CHARGE SINCE OTHER VEHICLES IN THIS CLASS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE WAS NO OFFER TO REIMBURSE ME FOR MY TOW SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALLY DISABLED. THIS WAS A PROBLEM THAT FORD AND THE NHTSA WERE AWARE OF AND MY VEHICLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS OTHERS. I FEEL THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR LABOR OR TOW TO CORRECT A DEFECT. *TR
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-11-05
- VIN: 4M2CU29389K
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2009 MERCURY MARINER HYBRID WITH 93000 MILES DRIVING 50 MPH ON A SIX-LANE BLVD. HESITATES BRIEFLY, THEN ACCELERATOR CEASES TO FUNCTION COMPLETELY. DESPITE THE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION, WE MANAGED TO MANEUVER THE CAR OFF THE ROAD TO SAFETY. WARNING LIGHT (TRIANGLE WITH EXCLAMATION POINT) AND WARNING MESSAGE "STOP SAFELY NOW". THE CAR COMPUTER KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM, WHY DOESN'T FORD? THEY CONDUCTED A "CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM" FOR MILLIONS OF ESCAPE AND MARINER OWNERS FOR THIS VERY ISSUE - THROTTLE BODY DEFECT - BUT NOT HYBRIDS. WHY NOT? IT COST US $300 AND NEARLY A MULTI-CAR ACCIDENT. FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR MANUFACTURERS DEFECTS IN ALL CARS, NOT JUST SOME. PUTTING FAMILIES IN HARM'S WAY BECAUSE FORD DOESN'T HAVE THE INTEGRITY TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR VEHICLE ISSUES IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. THIS SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED, AND FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD LIABLE.

IT WENT OFF AND STAYED OFF AND THEN FORD FIXED IT, REPLACED THE ABS MODULE IT HAS BEEN O.K. SINCE THEN. I DID NOT LIKE THE PRICE OF THE REPAIR AT $1933.03. I DO NOT THINK A WOMEN WOULD BE ABLE TO STOP HER CAR IF THIS HAPPEN TO HER WHILE DRIVING YOU NEED TOO MUCH PUSH ON THE BRAKE TO STOP EVEN WHEN GOING SLOW, AND IF GOING THE SPEED POSTED TWO FEET MAYBE*SMCH

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-05-15
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH BOARD CAME ON AND THEN THE BREAKS FAILED. WE WERE ABLE TO GET TO SAFETY AFTER GOING OFF THE ROAD. WHEN TAKEN INTO THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY REPAIR SHOP THEY RESET THE CODES AND SAID EVERYTHING WAS FINE, NO PARTS TO REPAIR. LESS THAN 50 MILES LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN INJURING 3! THIS TIME IT'S THE ABS MODULE. AFTER CALLING THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY, THEY REFUSE TO ADMIT THERE IS ANY PROBLEM AND NO REASON FOR A RECALL. WE WERE GIVEN THE NHTSA INFORMATION TO MAKE A COMPLAINT AND IF EVENTUALLY NHTSA INFORMS FORD THAT THEY MUST DO A RECALL WE CAN BE GIVEN A REFUND FOR OUR MONEY SPENT ON THIS REPAIR. OUR QUESTION IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SOMEONE DIES? DOES IT TAKE THAT BEFORE SOMEONE IS GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE KNOWN HYBRID BREAKING PROBLEMS? THE MANGER AT THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY CUSTOMER SERVICE DOESN'T THINK IT'S AN ISSUE WORTH LOOKING INTO ONLY TO SAY THAT A VEHICLE WITH HIGH MILEAGE SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF AND REPAIRED BY THE OWNERS. NOT THAT FORD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FAULTY PARTS! PLEASE NHTSA DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE HYBRID BREAKING SYSTEM BEFORE MULTIPLE PEOPLE CONTINUE TO BE INJURED OR ARE KILLED!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-08-04
- VIN: 4M2CU29319K
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: MY CAR, ON 4-5 OCCASIONS NOW, HAS LOST ALL POWER WHILE TRAVELING ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 80 MILES PER HOUR. I CALLED FORD BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROGRAM AND MY VEHICLE DOES NOT QUALIFY BECAUSE OF THE ASSEMBLY PLANT THAT THE CAR WAS BUILT AT. I CAN ATTEST THAT MY VEHICLE IS DOING THE SAME EXACT THING THAT IS DESCRIBED IN THE ACCOUNTS OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE - WITHOUT QUESTION. I URGE YOU TO EXPAND THE PROGRAM THAT FORD IS BEING REQUIRED TO DO FOR THIS MASSIVE (OVER 1 MILLION VEHICLE) PROBLEM. THIS APPEARS TO ME TO GO BEYOND A PLANT ISSUE TO AN ENGINEERING ISSUE WITH THE PART ITSELF. *TR
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-10-11
- VIN: 4M2CU29399K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: THE STEERING LOCKED FOR 1 TO 2 SECONDS DURING A RIGHT HAND TURN ON AN ENTRANCE RAMP TO A HIGHWAY. IT HAPPENED AGAIN 2 MONTHS LATER WITH THE STEERING LOCKING FOR 1 TO 2 SECONDS ON A LEFT HAND TURN AFTER STOPPING AT A STOP SIGN. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-09-01
- VIN: 4M2CU393X9K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS LOST BRAKES 3 TIMES. MY NOW 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER IS THE DRIVER! THE FIRST TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND PUMPING IT WOULD NOT HELP. PUTTING THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND USING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE CAR. A NON-FORD CAR TECHNICIAN TOLD US IT WAS A POSSIBLE BRAKE BOOSTER ISSUE AND THE BEST THING TO DO WOULD BE FOR IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN AND BRING IT TO FORD FOR THE CODES TO BE READ. I DROVE THE CAR FOR OVER A WEEK AND IT WOULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM. THE SECOND TIME WAS ALSO AROUND 40 MPH AND PUSHING THE BRAKES AS HARD AS POSSIBLE WOULD ONLY SLIGHTLY STOP THE CAR AND IT WOULD KEEP JUMPING FORWARD. MY DAUGHTER HAD TO STOP WITH THE E-BRAKE. I TOOK IT TO FORD FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. FORD REPLACED THE VACUUM PUMP/HOSE ASSEMBLY. THEN 2 DAYS LATER, SHE LOST BRAKES AGAIN. HAD TO USE E-BRAKE TO STOP IN BUSY TRAFFIC. THE SOUTHEAST REGION FORD TECHNICIAN CAME TO DIAGNOSIS THIS CAR. AFTER 9 DAYS AT THE SHOP THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD AGAIN THAT THIS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. FYI ( EACH TIME THE CAR LOST BRAKES, BY TURNING OFF THE CAR AND BACK ON AGAIN IT WOULD REGAIN THEM). I AM NOW DRIVING THIS CAR TO DETERMINE IF THE ISSUE IS IN FACT TAKEN CARE OF. THIS HAS BEEN A VERY SCARY SITUATION - ESPECIALLY SINCE MY DAUGHTER IS THE DRIVER OF THIS VEHICLE. WHEN READING AUTOMOBILE BLOGS IT APPEARS BRAKES ARE AN ISSUE NOT ONLY WITH THE MARINER HYBRID, BUT THE ESCAPE HYBRID AS WELL. I WOULD LIKE THIS INVESTIGATED. *KB
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-08-11
- VIN: 4M2CU29359K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: POWER STEERING CUT OUT, QUIT WORKING, ON LEFT TURN, SPEED ABOUT 10 MPH. OUTAGE LASTED ABOUT 1-2 SECONDS. BELIEVE WOULD HAVE HIT FAR SIDE CURB IF STEERING HAD NOT SPONTANEOUSLY RECOVERED. THIS WAS FIRST OCCURRENCE. DROVE CAR DIRECTLY TO DEALER FROM INCIDENT; DIAGNOSIS TBD. AFRAID TO DRIVE. AT HIGHER SPEED OR IF HAD LASTED JUST A LITTLE LONGER WOULD HAVE WRECKED! *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-09-15
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4M2CU293X9K
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 MERCURY MARINER HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES IN THE PARKING LOT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND TO THE BRAKES AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. AFTER HITTING THE VEHICLE THE RPMS CONTINUED TO INCREASE AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER TO BE INSPECTED. THE POLICE DID NOT FILE A REPORT BECAUSE THEY SAID IT WAS IN A SCHOOL PARKING. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 14143.
SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-08-03
- VIN: 4M2CU29319K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, ELECTRIC
- Summary: MERCURY MARINER HYBRID 2009 HAD IT FOR 18 MONTHS AND AUGUST 3, 2010 UPON AN APPROACH TO A STOP LIGHT ENGAGING THE BRAKES I HEARD AN AUDIBLE WARNING SOUND AND LOOKED AT MY CONSOLE TO SEE THE WARNING TO CHECK BRAKES, AT THAT MOMENT MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT SOFT AND TO THE FLOOR, I HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP THE MARINER TO AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. I PARKED ASAP IN A GAS STATION LEAVING THE MARINER AND CALLING FOR A RIDE BACK TO MY OFFICE TO PICK UP ANOTHER VEHICLE TO GET HOME AND THE NEXT MORNING CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP INSTRUCTING ME TO CONTACT FORD TO GET IT TOWED TO THEM, LATER THAT DAY I GET A CALL FROM THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TELLING ME THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE I HAD 40,000 MILE ON A 18 MONTH VEHICLE AND THE REPAIR COST IS $1,700.00. MY WIFE AND SELF COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED OR WORSE. I WILL BE WILLING TO COOPERATE TO ANY EXTENT TO HELP ESCALATE THIS CONCERN AS A SAFETY RECALL ISSUE. *TR

I researched this vehicle for over 6 months. After so much anticipation, I wondered if it would live up to my expectations. However, I took the keys in Aug 07 and have never been happier. It surpassed my dreams! It's really fun to drive, but you do need to be watchful. I have scared folks when running on the electric motor, all you can hear are the tires on the ground, which can be a bit eerie. The kids tease me that it's quieter than the 'Barbie' Car! We even took it on a major vacation, driving 700 miles one way for 12 hours, and it did great, getting 31 mpg. It saved us 1/3 of the cost in gas compared to our Windstar, without losing any comfort. It handled the mountain curves with ease. The navigation system was helpful, but it gave warnings in some areas. Overall, I think Ford has outdone themselves with this one!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I've had the car for two weeks now and I couldn't be happier. The efficiency is exactly what was projected, the creature comforts have exceeded my expectations, and even my 9-year old son thinks the car is really cool.
William Walker 2024-11-26
I've been driving the SUV for three weeks now and I'm really enjoying it. This version of the Mariner is a significant improvement. We previously had a 2005 FWD Premier that was unfortunately totaled in an accident. Thankfully, my partner came out of the accident with no injuries, so we decided to stick with the Mariner but upgrade to the hybrid version, and we're so glad we did. The new look is a big step up and comes across as much more classy than the previous version.
Devyn Kessler 2024-11-14
While I have put less than 1000 miles on my new Mariner, I'm really impressed with the hybrid design and I'm averaging over 35 mpg. So far, I absolutely love the car and the overall design. There's a lot of room and flexibility, and I think Ford has done a fantastic job!
Geovany Oberbrunner 2024-10-28
I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the handling, mileage, and power of your vehicle! It's great to know that you have plenty of passing power and can go on many trips without having to stop at the gas station thanks to the impressive 36+mpg. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
