2005 Pontiac Grand am problems
The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

2005 Pontiac Grand am recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2005 Pontiac Grand am.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

THESE LAMPS DO NOT CONTAIN THE REQUIRED AMBER SIDE REFLECTORS.
- Consequence: DECREASED LIGHTING VISIBILITY MAY RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: SABERSPORT WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND OFFER A FULL REFUND FOR THE NONCOMPLIANT COMBINATION LAMPS. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 11, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SABERSPORT AT 1-909-598-7589.

Consumer guides these days seem to only rate the performance of the vehicle and ignore its value. However, I am here to tell you about the value of this car. I paid $16,000 CDN (after taxes) for a 1-year-old car loaded with features, all power, and with only 23,000kms w/ 2 years remaining on the warranty. This is an excellent deal! What can you buy with this money? Nothing comparable. My friend bought a 2005 Civic, paid $24,000 CDN and has to manually roll up his windows! His car is weak on hills and has poor fuel efficiency. In contrast, my GA flies up hills, has tons of low-end power, and gets about 25-30mpg. The hype about foreign cars is overrated. I'll be driving my GA when my buddy's Civic is mowing lawns!
-
Awesome car for the money! It's solid and fun to drive. I've owned three Grand Prix's from 1997 to 2000. This is my first Grand Am GT1, and it's a great little car with amazing get up and go!
-
Excellent Car, great handling and powerful engine. I love driving this car, a great choice for anyone wanting a reliable sporty car.
-
Congratulations on your new car! I understand that it can be nerve-wracking to try out a new brand, but the sleek body style and impressive gas mileage of 31 miles per gallon were definitely selling points. While the ride may not be as smooth as you expected, I'm sure that with time and more driving, you'll get used to it. It's great that you're happy with your purchase and I hope that your Pontiac brings you years of enjoyment!
-
Happy to hear about your experience with your car! It's great to know that it has been reliable and has lasted you so long. Even though the roads you drove on were more suited for off-road vehicles, your car never let you down. As a young driver, you tested the limits and found out the max speed of the car, which topped out at 110 mph before cutting out on more than one occasion. Despite all of this, your car is still going strong today, with about 120k on it. During the time you owned the car, you were a service writer at an auto repair shop, and the techs there helped you ensure the ongoing safety and maintenance of the car. They have all commented on how well the car has faired considering the abuse it has been through. It's clear that you have taken great care of your car and it has served you well!

I recently traded in my '03 Saturn for a Grand Am. Although I was excited about the new car, I found myself feeling disappointed after a month. The car's interior is smaller than my Saturn's, and the curved doors make it difficult to fit larger items in the back seat. Additionally, the seats are not the most comfortable for long road trips. The car's interior is mostly made of plastic, which gives it a less luxurious feel. Unfortunately, I have also experienced issues with the starter, which seems to be a common problem with Grand Ams.

I've had this car for a few years now. I bought it in 2007 with 30k miles and it now has 80k. So far, nothing major has broken down, which is great. However, I have noticed that the car is starting to show some wear and tear. The paint is fading and flaking, and there is some body rust on it. The headlights are also a bit hazy and fogged. I've had to replace the battery once and the CV boots three times, but that's to be expected with any car. The brakes were a bit rusty, but I was able to get them fixed by a mechanic. There is a clicking sound from the blinkers, but apparently, it's a common issue with this car. Despite these minor issues, the car is pretty zippy and fun to drive. If you're looking for a car that's not only fun but also reliable, I'd definitely recommend it.

This car has a notorious security issue that tends to start up after it hits 100,000 miles. However, it is a very affordable car. As the only owner of my car, I have kept up with maintenance since I am a mechanic and I actually love Pontiac. Unfortunately, they have dropped the ball on this one. I have had issues with the door check on 2 doors and all of the windows have eventually fallen off the tracks. Additionally, the security light can cause a delay of 15 minutes of driving (you can look up the Grand Am security issue on Google). Despite these issues, the engine has been rebuilt twice for a blown head gasket and melted wires to the cam and crank sensors. I still own the car because after all these issues were fixed, the car seems solid and is a great beater car!

I haven't had this vehicle for long, but so far I'm really impressed with how well it handles. It feels really sturdy as you drive it, which is great. And I have to say, I absolutely love this car!
Hayden Ebert 2024-03-16
This is my first vehicle, but I have driven many before. I really like this small car because it has a sporty look and doesn't feel like something only your grandma would drive. It's also very convenient.
