1991 Pontiac Grand am problems
The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

I purchased the car back in 2001 after I had an accident with my S-10. Unfortunately, the body has rusted out over time. The car has only failed me once when the starter went out after work one day. Another issue I had was when I cracked the exhaust behind the catalytic converter due to hitting the dips in Holdingford. Later, I replaced the catalytic converter with a cherry bomb glasspack, which made it relatively fast. I was able to get it up to 110! Overall, it's a good and reliable vehicle that I would recommend to anyone. Although, my heater doesn't work, and I don't have the time or ambition to fix it. However, I don't care much anymore since I bought a 1996 Grand Prix.
-
I've had this car for almost three years and the only issue I've had is with the A/C compressor. Surprisingly, it has over 140K miles on the original Quad 4, which is quite impressive considering that most Quad motors aren't very reliable. Despite what people may think about the GA, I believe it's a solid car that just needs proper care. It's important to take care of your car and not neglect oil changes if you want it to run smoothly for a long time.
-
That's the best car ever! It routinely smokes Mustangs.
-
You made a great choice buying this car! I bought mine when it was just a year old with 10k miles on it and have been doing regular maintenance on my own, such as oil changes, lubes, filters, and transmission fluid. It now has 129k miles and is still running strong thanks to its Tech 4 engine. I've only had a few minor issues, such as the alternator and cooling fan, and once the ECM went bad, leaving the engine unable to start. But with a repair cost of only $350 including labor, it was a small price to pay for such a dependable car that's easy to maintain and keep running.

Your 1990 Grand Am Sedan is amazing! It's so impressive that it's still running smoothly in 2024 with just standard maintenance. You must take great care of it. Keep up the good work and enjoy driving it for as long as possible! ;-)

You owned this Pontiac for two years and put over 500,000 miles on it! It sounds like the little car was quite the trooper, but unfortunately it fell apart around the engine. You had the 2.3 DOHC 16 Valve, which made it a fast little girl! It's a shame that Pontiac didn't build the body better, as the rear shocks ended up coming up through the trunk. You paid $1,500 for it and drove it back and forth to college everyday. It sounds like you definitely got your money's worth out of it!

I purchased my car for $800 from a less reputable dealer. Despite having 111,000 miles on it, it reliably got me to school every day. The 4Tech engine it had (not the Quad) was a major factor in its excellent performance. Even on frigid Illinois mornings (-15F), my car was the only one that would start. However, its appearance was a different story. Although I got it with no rust or dings, the first winter caused significant damage to the body. Unfortunately, the rust spread like an infection and the rear shocks broke into the trunk, but I was relieved to read in the reviews that I wasn't the only one with this issue. After 2 1/2 years and 30,000 miles, the engine finally gave out and I sold it to a junkyard for $35. (The transmission was still in good condition)

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I understand that you needed quick transportation and your brother-in-law sold you this car for $450. It sounds like the car had some issues with rust, paint, and oil leaks, and it wasn't the most powerful car you've driven. However, you were able to use it for two and a half years without major repairs, which is impressive! Unfortunately, it seems like the car is now experiencing some problems with the seals and cylinders. Based on your experience, you would recommend avoiding these cars unless they are given to you. Thank you again for sharing your story with us!

My 1990 Grand Am SE 2 Door coupe was one of the fastest 4 cylinder cars on the road, thanks to the custom quad turbo I had on it. However, the quad 4 motor couldn't handle any type of stress, which meant I found myself under the hood weekly working on the engine to keep it running. While I wouldn't recommend this car for someone who values comfort, it's a great choice for those who enjoy working on motors. Unfortunately, my car is now in the junk heap after I blew the motor for the 6th time. Perhaps a quad turbo is just too much for that engine.
