2011 Porsche Cayenne s problems

porsche logo

The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2011 Porsche Cayenne s problems

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S has been reported to have several common problems, based on complaints from owners. One of the issues is related to the plastics used in the car, which are reported to be brittle and prone to breaking. For instance, the vent sliders are made of a fragile plastic that can break off in your hand while in use, and the silver trim on the driver side window button can also break off, requiring replacement of the entire window switch.

Another problem reported by owners is related to the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system. Many people have reported that the PSM in the 2011 Cayenne can go kaput, especially at highway speeds, causing a drastic loss of power. This issue has been reported to be caused by the rupture of a coolant tubing in the engine block.

The Variocam camshaft drive bolt failure is another common problem in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. These bolts can fail and cause engine damage, leading to a loss of motive power. The German manufacturer has organized special repair camps to replace the whole camshaft assembly in response to this issue.

Transfer case issues have also been reported in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. Drivers have reported clunking and grinding noises from the transfer case, which can cause violent jerks and loss of power at varying speeds. This issue has been reported to occur at very low mileage and requires a whole part replacement.

Brake pedal issues have also been reported in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. Some people have experienced a hard brake pedal that cannot be pressed down, especially at lower speeds or while the car is decelerating. This issue is a major safety concern and can cause a collision.

Interior issues have also been reported in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne. Dashboard glare has been a common complaint, with people reporting a bright glare in the driver’s eye caused by a reflection from the dashboard. The dealerships suggest installing a “blanket” over the dashboard to avoid the glare.

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne has also had several recalls, including issues with exterior lighting, engine and engine cooling, service brakes, and loose camshaft controllers inside the engine. These recalls have been initiated to address issues that may affect visibility, increase the risk of fire, increase the risk of a crash, or result in a stall.

In conclusion, the 2011 Porsche Cayenne S has several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include brittle plastics, PSM failures, Variocam camshaft drive bolt failures, transfer case issues, brake pedal problems, and interior issues such as dashboard glare. The car has also had several recalls to address various safety concerns. If you own a 2011 Porsche Cayenne or are considering buying one, it is important to be aware of these common problems and take appropriate steps to address them.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WP1AB2A25BL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My vehicle has camshaft and crankshaft correlation problems due to the well-known problem with its screws and other things. I reported it to Porsche and they told me that it has already been repaired but I don't understand how to fail again and deny help for its repair.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-17
  • VIN: WP1AB2A29BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have a 2011 model Porsche Cayenne S. From the service records, I can tell the car has had two transfer cases already replaced and is in need of another. The first transfer case was replaced in mid-2016 by the dealer at about 46,000 miles. The second transfer case was replaced just over 12,000 miles later, at 58,500 miles, in late 2019. Both replacements were done by the previous owner. This should have been the newest and most updated transfer case with the new control modules and GNC-coated plates, but this does not appear to have solved the problems Porsche is having with the transfer cases. It is now mid-2023, and an independent shop says I need another transfer case in my car at 76,000 miles. It is hard to believe that Porsche considered the upgraded parts (2018+) to be a permanent solution, especially when it only lasted about 17,000 miles.      I will hopefully be able to have my local dealership dissect the transfer case I am replacing so that I can learn more about what actually failed on this updated unit. Transfer cases are a major part of the vehicle and should be expected to last just as long as other major components (ex. engine, transmission). It is very unsafe when any major part of the drive train fails.  PS. One of the main reasons for purchasing this specific cayenne was because I believed the transfer case it had installed in 2019 would have solved all of these issues and I would not need to replace it again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-08
  • VIN: WP1AV2A24BL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Porsche Cayenne. The contact noticed that the smoke light stop functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the fuse for the smoke light was replaced. On another occasion, the contact noticed that the passenger-side headlight to the vehicle stop functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the light bulb was replaced but the failure reoccurred, and the passenger side headlight light bulb was replaced. On another occasion, the air condition stops functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the blower motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that the VIN was not under NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V069000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) and did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 20,000. The contact stated that the failure mileage was between 60,000 and 80,000. The recall for a faulty main wiring harness does not include the contact's VIN. The contact has concerns about the bad wiring eventually causing a fire. No repairs have been made. The contact stated the problem still persists, and informed there is a electrical problem.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
  • VIN: WP1AC2A25BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 2011 Cayenne Turbo: Vehicle has had recent transfer case servicing. Experiencing a grinding sensation on roundabouts, and turns that almost feels as if the brake is applied. If issue continues to worsen, it could easily cause an accident as a sudden speed reduction on a roundabout, or turn may prompt unaware/inattentive drivers to rear-end me, or worse. Dealership is citing transfer case failure, however, my vehicle is one year removed from the end of the extended warranty campaign and is no longer eligible for a replacement unit.

I HAVE READ TONS OF REPORTS ON FORUMS CITING THIS SAME PROBLEM. IF THIS IS SUCH A KNOWN HAZARD WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO HAVE PORSCE DO THE RIGHT THING AND RECALL & GET THIS FIXED? I PRAY THEY ARE NOT WAITING FOR A DEATH FIRST. *TR

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-01-16
  • VIN: WP1AB2A20BL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I WAS PULLING FORWARD ON A LEVEL CITY STREET AND TURNING LEFT FROM A STOP SIGN. THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SHUDDERING AND FEELING OF A LOSS OF POWER. THIS WAS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS THIS HAD BEEN INCREASING IN SEVERITY BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS ABLE TO REPEAT THE PROBLEM FOR THEM. THEY IDENTIFIED THE TRANSFER CASE AS THE ISSUE. IT WAS REPLACED. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRES DUE TO THE DEALERS IDENTIFICATION THAT THE TRANSFER CASE HAD CAUSED DIFFERENTIAL TREAD WEAR DAMAGE TO A REAR TIRE. AS A FORMER MILITARY AVIATOR, THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. PORSCHE NEEDS TO IDENTIFY WHAT THE ISSUES ARE (DESIGN, MANUFACTURING, SERVICING, ETC) AND REMEDY THEM. SURPRISINGLY, THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM BECAUSE THE SERVICE ADVISER INFORMED ME THAT THEY KEEP TRANSFER CASES IN STOCK. THEY RETAIL FOR $3944, PLUS THE NEW VENT KIT (MINE DOES NOT HAVE IT) AND THEN ADD LABOR, AND TIRES IF THEY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED. THAT IS A LOT OF EXPENSIVE INVENTORY TO HAVE ON HAND IF PORSCHE WANTS TO CLAIM THERE IS NOT A PROBLEM.
