1995 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

  • Summary: 1995 PONTIAC GRAND AM OVERHEATING. REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT FOUR TIMES AND FINALLY THE HEAD GASKETS WARPED. PAID FOR THE HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT. CONTINUED TO OVERHEAT AND CALLED GENERAL MOTORS. MEDIATOR WAS OF VERY LITTLE HELP. TOOK IT BACK UNDER THE REPAIR WARRANTY, THEN THE RADIATOR BLEW BECAUSE THEY HAD REPLACED THE RADIATOR CAP WITH A HIGHER PRESSURE RATING. WE TOOK IT BACK AND THEY REPLACED THE RADIATOR, HOSES, HEATER CORE AND NUMEROUS OTHER THINGS. IT CONTINUED TO OVERHEAT. IN GENERAL WE HAVE SPENT ABOUT $2500.00 AND STILL HAVE THIS ISSUE. ADDITIONALLY, WE NOW HAVE THE ABS WARNING LIGHT COMING ON OCCASIONALLY AND I FOUND SOME ENGINE WIRES TWISTED UP OVER THE MANIFOLD. I HAVE SINCE MOVED THEM BACK TO THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION AND HAD TO USE ELECTRICAL TAPE ON ANOTHER WIRE CONNECTION THAT THE LOCK (SNAP) WAS BROKE OFF. SINCE DOING THIS I HAVE NOT HAD THE CAR OVERHEATING AS OFTEN. ADDITIONALLY SINCE REPAIRS WERE MADE, WE NOW HAVE HEAVY CONDENSATION ON THE INTERIOR WINDSHIELD, (WINDOW WIPERS ON THE INSIDE COULD BE A SOLUTION...) ALONG WITH PUDDLES OF WATER ON THE PASSENGER FLOOR AND IN THE TRUNK....GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT THEY DID TO MY CAR AFTER I CALLED GENERAL MOTORS, EVERYTHING JUST SEEMED TO GET WORSE FROM THERE.. COINCIDENCE, I THINK NOT. THEY ARE NOW BANKRUPT SO THERE IS NO RECOURSE IN MY CASE OF RETRIEVING MONEY NEEDLESSLY SPENT ON REPAIRS THEY SHOULD HAVE FIXED PROPERLY IN THE FIRST PLACE. AND WHILE I'M AT IT, I WONDER IF THEY EVER TOOK CAR OF THAT IGNITION RECALL? I AM STILL DRIVING THE CAR WHEN IT IS BEHAVING BUT I HAVE BEEN HAVING TO HOLD THE IGNITION SWITCH TO GET THE CAR TO START WHICH I HADN'T HAD TO DO BEFORE... ARE THEY WAITING FOR MY CAR TO CATCH ON FIRE DUE TO THIS IGNITION PROBLEM? THE SMARTEST THING WOULD BE TO TAKE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE BUT NO ONE WANTS TO TOUCH THE CAR AFTER FINDING OUT IT WAS AT THE OTHER DEALERSHIP SO WHERE DO I GO NOW? AND A REPLY ON THAT SURE WOULD BE A BIG HELP! *JB

  • VIN: 1G2NE55D1SC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I BOUGHT MY 1995 PONTIAC GRAND AM SE, USED IN 2001, NOT EVEN A MONTH AFTER HAVING IT, I HAD TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR. FROM THERE WENT MY COOLANT LINE, A DEALER PART I HAD TO PAY A FORTUNE FOR. THEN I ALSO HAVE SIGNIFICANT WATER DAMAGE THAT SOMEHOW GETS INTO MY CARAND I END UP WITH PUDDLES OF WATER ON THE FLOOR. MY HEATER CORE WENT, REPLACED THAT. THEN BALL JOINTS, REPLACED THAT. THEN THE RECALL ON MY IGNITION THAT I FAILED TO RECIEVE, WAS OUT WITH MY HUSBAND AND SON FOR THE DAY, GOT IN TO START MY CAR AND IT WOULDNT TURN OVER. TOOK THE KEY OUT, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTED TO TURN OVER REPEDITILY. NEEDLESS TO SAY IF MY HUSBAND WASNT THERE MY SON AND I COULD HAVE DIED, I WOULDNT HAVE KNOW WHAT TO DO. MY SON WAS STRAPPED IN HIS CAR SEAT AND I POPPED THE HOOD, NEXT THING I KNOW SMOKE STARTS POURING INTO MY CAR FROM THE DASH. SO I GRAB MY SON OUT QUICKLY AS MY HUSBAND POPPED THE HOOD, AND SEEN SPARKS AND RIPPED THE POWER CORD OFF OF THE BATTERY WHICH STOPPED THE SPARKS WHICH WAS IN THE PROCESS OF STARTING A FIRE. AFTER REPLACING THAT, MY POWER STEERING WENT, HAD TO REPLACE THOSE LINES. THEN MY COOLANT WAS LOW FOR NO REASON AT ALL, THE NEXT WEEK, TWO WEEKS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE, OIL LIGHT COMES ON. NO OIL IN THE ENGINE. PUT OIL IN AND WAS FINE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR UNTIL CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND I HAD TO PULL OF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO FIND OUT THAT I HAVE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET PLUS OTHER PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THIS THAT CAUSED MY MOTOR TO NO LONGER BE IN RUNNING ORDER. I STILL OWE $2000 ON MY CAR AND WAS TOLD TODAY BY NUMEROUS SPECIALISTS THAT THIS CAR WITH THE BLOWN HEAD GASKETS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM IN THESE CARS, AND FOR SOME REASON GM FAILS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS AND LETS THESE CARS REMAIN ON THE ROAD. Negative 1995 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Lindsey Batz 2024-11-21

I am a fan of GM cars. I purchased this car with 95,000 well-maintained miles. On the positive side, the engine started every time even in sub-zero weather. However, I have had to spend a lot on repairs. I have had to replace the A/C compressor due to a bad clutch, and now the evaporator leaks. The steering rack blew a seal, the intake manifold gasket had to be replaced, the heater core was replaced, 2 motor mounts were replaced, the exhaust system was fixed, the power window motor was replaced, and recently, the belt tensioner had to be replaced because the pulley froze. All these repairs were done within 15,000 miles and a year and a half. I have owned many GM vehicles and expect maintenance repairs, but I will not be buying or recommending another Grand Am.

  2. Ethel Connelly 2024-10-25

I purchased this car used with a little over 80K miles on it. Unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues since the week I got it. I have needed to take it to the shop for repairs at least every other month, and sometimes even every 3-4 weeks. I have had at least 4 different problems at various times that caused the engine to overheat. The transmission has also needed to be replaced, and now it requires a new head gasket along with some other issues. Thankfully, we had a used car warranty that covered the majority of the repairs, as the out of pocket repairs would have cost us double what the car is worth over the last 2 years. Additionally, the plastic inside the car rattles loudly when driving over 40 mph. Overall, my experience with this car has been less than ideal, and I will likely not be purchasing a Pontiac again.

  3. Elvis Koss 2024-10-16

Not a bad car. It has 93000 miles and the only things that have been replaced are the alternator at about 80000 (seems like a common issue) and the wheel speed sensor at 37000 miles. Although the dash squeaks are annoying, they become hardly noticeable after driving for a while. The engine hasn't been touched, except for regular oil changes, and it runs like it's brand new.

  4. D'angelo Kris 2024-06-20

The Quad 4 engine has presented several issues, including the need to replace the head gasket, heater core, oil pressure sensor, and ignition housing. Unfortunately, the head gasket has failed again. It is advisable not to exceed 85,000 miles. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my ability to address these issues and ensure the vehicle runs smoothly.

  5. Gerard Wiza 2024-04-21

Hi, I bought my 95 Grand Am back in 97, with 15,000 miles and was very pleased with the style of the car and the gas mileage. I routinely got 34mpg on the highway. The only thing that was bad about the car was the engine. I replaced the head gasket 2 times and after the 3rd I decided it was "3 strikes You're OUT" and junked it at 150,000 miles in July of 94. The body still looked like new, and everything else was in great mechanical shape. The first time the headgasket went it was under warranty, but #2 cost me $1,000 and I was told #3 was going to be more.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it with 93,000 miles on it and now it has 102,000 miles. My husband drives it 4 hours a day, 4 times a week, and so far, it's been great! The only issues we've had are a leaky valve cover and a blown fuse for the power locks, but they were both easy fixes. The air conditioner just needs to be charged. Overall, we're really happy with this car!

I got my Grand Am as my first car. At first, I thought I would only have it until I could afford a truck. However, I quickly fell in love with the car. The 5-speed transmission makes me feel like I'm part of the car. Since I fell in love with my car, I have installed many sound systems in it, which led me to start my own business. I had the windows tinted and custom graphics put on, and I now work at a graphics shop. I also added rims and a few other little things, and it seems like a completely different car now. It went from just another Grand Am to a GranDAMN! I know it sounds cheesy, but it works.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a 95 Grand Am! It's great to hear that you've already taken it on two trips covering over 5k miles and that the car has been running wonderfully. Although there were some minor issues such as blown fuses and a short in the blinkers, it's good to know that you were able to overcome them. Overall, it sounds like you have a great car with wonderful seats!

I love my Grand Am! I bought it brand new and drove it for eleven years without any issues. It has great gas mileage and I even gave it to my daughter this year when I bought a new car. I made sure to follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule, including changing the oil and replacing the tires at 75,000 miles. This car was built to last and has good acceleration for a four-cylinder engine.
