1994 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-16
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I HAVE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ON THIS VEHICLE. WAS BOUGHT AS A USED VEHICLE, PAST OWNER CLAIMS HIS DAUGHTER DROVE IT TO AND FROM COLLEGE. IT IS AN ABS CAR WITH THE 2.3 4 CYLINDER, AUTO TRANS, FWD SE. THE ABS SYSTEM IS MESSED UP AND WHEN YOU TRY TO STOP THE TIRES LOCK-UP ON YOU, THE CAR WILL SLIDE ESPECIALLY IF THE ROADS ARE WET AND THIS IS AT A SPEED OF NOT MORE THAN 15 MPH. LUCKILY WE HAVE AVOIDED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS, BUT THERE IS GOING TO COME A TIME WE AREN'T THAT LUCKY. ALSO THE HEADLIGHTS AND DASH LIGHTS WORK WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT. THE CAR WON'T STAY COOL NO MATTER WHAT I DO TO IT, THE THERMOSTAT AND HEATER CORE WERE ALREADY REMOVED FROM THE CAR WHEN WE BOUGHT IT. THE ELECTRIC FAN DOES NOT WORK AND I HAVE REPLACED COUNTLESS RELAYS ATTEMPTING TO GET THIS CAR TO BE DEPENDABLE AGAIN. THE TILT STEERING COLUMN NEEDS WORK, BECAUSE IT MOVES WHEN IT SHOULDN'T. WE CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE WE ARE WASTING MONEY ATTEMPTING TO KEEP THIS ONE ON THE ROAD. YES IT WAS A USED CAR AND WE GOT WHAT WE PAID FOR IN REALITY. BUT THE DESIGN OF THE CAR JUST PLAIN OUT WAS A FAILURE. SERIOUSLY THE DESIGNERS NEED TO TEST THEIR IDEAS MORE BEFORE PUTTING THEM OUT ON THE MARKET. WE LOOKED AT A BRAND NEW KIA YESTERDAY AND WALKED AWAY FROM IT, BECAUSE IT WAS NEVER TESTED FOR SAFETY. THE MANAGER OF THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THEY JUST DIDN'T BOTHER PUTTING THE SAFETY RATINGS ON THE WINDOW STICKER. I IN FACT RESEARCHED THE CAR AND FOUND IT HAD NEVER BEEN TESTED FOR SAFETY. YES IT IS A BRAND NEW 2014 KIA CADENZA, DON'T BUY ONE THEY AREN'T WORTH THE ALMOST $40,000 PRICE TAG. TO TOP IT OFF ALMOST 90% OF THE CAR IS BUILT AND MANUFACTURED IN KOREA. SORRY JUST MY OPINION, IF I'M GOING TO SPEND THAT MUCH MONEY I WILL BUY BUILT AMERICAN. *TR

Negative 1994 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Demario Lehner 2024-10-16

Although I experienced some issues with my Grand Am, I can confidently say that it is a car that requires regular maintenance and upkeep. After driving the car for 20,000 miles, I had to replace the engine and address other issues such as the shocks and struts, EGR valve, Exhaust, and the alternator. However, with proper care and attention, these problems can be avoided. While it may not be the best fit for everyone, I believe that the Grand Am can be a reliable and enjoyable car with the right care and attention.

  2. Geovanni Weissnat 2024-10-10

Wow, it's great to hear that you've had it for 7 years without any major repairs!

  3. Cory Schmitt 2024-09-06

American car manufacturers need to step up their game. My experience with this car was nothing short of a nightmare. Despite spending over 2K in repairs, I constantly faced transmission problems, oil leaks, and the car would not stay running in stop and go traffic. It was a frustrating and expensive ordeal. While I want to support American cars, I cannot justify the time and money spent on constant repairs. The final straw was when the ABS brakes locked, causing me to skid and swerve up the side of the San Joaquin mountain. It's time for American car manufacturers to prioritize quality and safety.

  4. Rod DuBuque 2024-08-27

Hey there! I recently bought this car for college at a great price of $2000, even though it had 112000 miles on it. While I did have to make some repairs, such as changing the motor mount (which cost around $200), fixing the side windows (a common issue with Grand AM/GT cars), replacing the seats, and fixing the water mount (which had a labor cost of $300), the worst thing was that the steering rack was getting bad and I had to replace it for $600. However, overall it's not too bad and can take you anywhere you need to go!

  5. Elbert Shanahan 2024-05-22

I bought this car right before i went off to college in 2004 for about $1750. I just let it go a few days ago because it has a cracked head gasket which will be about $1000-1200 to fix- not worth it!!! But it lasted 5 years so I guess i got my money's worth in a way. But since having it I have gotten 2 water pumps replaced, a new radiator cap, a new belt, new brakes, new struts, a new battery, and a new alternator so it definitely gave me about 1 major mechanical problem a year. It also leaked oil. Also found out the hard way that the Low Fuel light doesn't work! Horrible gas mileage in my opinion, but could be because i never had a tune up. This car was always running hot!

Positive 1994 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Morgan Pacocha 2024-11-26

This car has been reliable, but recently I experienced some issues with overheating and a malfunctioning fan. I was able to fix the issue by repairing the sensor and heat core. Additionally, I addressed a water leak on the driver's side that was causing flooding on the floor. These repairs have restored the car's performance and reliability.

  2. Corbin Toy 2024-11-22

I really enjoyed driving this car. The V-6 engine was powerful and always started up without any issues. It handled great and was very comfortable. Although, I did experience some problems with the fuel gauge failing twice, the a/c once, and the water pump once, all within 120k miles. Unfortunately, the cost of fixing it the second time was too expensive. Every year, something seemed to go wrong and the bill was always around $1000. The last time it overheated and the dealer couldn't figure out the issue. Despite this, it still ran great until the coolant overflowed onto the street. I do miss it, but not the cost. I feel sorry for the poor guy who bought it from the place I traded it into.

  3. Lindsey Stracke 2024-10-27

I purchased this car about 6 years ago, and it still runs excellently. It's a lot of fun to drive, and I can say this as someone who also owns a 2001 Trans Am WS6. Although the Grand Am GT is not a muscle car, it is light and sporty, and the stiff suspension gives it excellent handling. Additionally, this car is beautiful, with a sporty yet classy look and a nice low profile. In fact, I find it much better looking than newer Grand Ams. Lastly, the seats are the most comfortable I have ever sat in.

  4. Hyman Corwin 2024-10-17

I purchased the car brand new and experienced some minor issues during the warranty period. For example, the plastic seat belt anchor cover needed to be pushed in, the signal lamp socket had higher resistance than normal resulting in one dimmer bulb, the fuel injector wire was loose, there was an intake gasket leak, the power window express down stopped working, and the front rotor was warped. However, all of these issues were taken care of under warranty. After the warranty expired, I replaced the battery and CD player. I believe both replacements were my fault as I left the battery on charge and forgot about it, and the CD player stopped working in cold weather after I took it apart. It's worth noting that the OEM CD player module was made in Japan.
