1992 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Common 1992 Pontiac Grand am problems

The 1992-1998 Pontiac Grand Am is known for several common problems, including engine cooling system issues, automatic transmission problems, electrical problems, and suspension and steering system issues.

One of the most common problems with the 1992-1998 Grand Am was with the engine cooling system. The plastic intake manifold was prone to cracking, which could cause coolant leaks and overheating. This was a widespread issue and eventually led to a recall by General Motors.

Another common issue with this generation of Grand Am was with the automatic transmission. The transmission was prone to slipping or shifting hard, which could be caused by a variety of issues including low fluid levels, worn clutch plates, or internal damage to the transmission.

Electrical problems were also common in this generation of Grand Am, with issues ranging from faulty sensors to failing power windows and door locks. These electrical issues could be difficult to diagnose and repair, and often required the assistance of a professional mechanic.

In addition to these problems, the 1992-1998 Grand Am was also prone to issues with its suspension and steering systems. The front struts were prone to leaking and failure, which could cause poor handling and ride quality. The power steering system was also prone to leaks and pump failures, which could cause the steering to become stiff or unresponsive.

Despite these issues, the fourth generation Pontiac Grand Am remains a popular and sought-after car among enthusiasts. If you own a 1992-1998 Grand Am, it's important to perform regular maintenance and inspections in order to keep it running smoothly and to address any issues that arise as soon as possible.

The third generation Pontiac Grand Am, produced from 1985 to 1991, also had its fair share of issues. One of the most common issues was engine stalling, often caused by issues with the fuel system, such as a clogged fuel filter or a faulty fuel pump. Other engine-related problems included issues with the distributor, spark plugs, and ignition timing. Transmission problems were also prevalent, with slipping or hesitation during acceleration being a frequent issue. Electrical issues, such as faulty alternators, starters, and ignition switches, were also common. Additionally, the power steering system was prone to problems, with power steering pumps being prone to failure.

Despite these issues, the third generation Grand Am remains a popular and collectible car among enthusiasts. Regular maintenance and inspections are important to keep it running smoothly and address any issues as soon as possible.

THE MAIN REASON THE PLASTIC SLIDES OFF IS IF THE CAR HAS BEEN FLOORED. IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU DRIVE TOO FAST AND PRESS THE GAS TOO HARD, THEN THE RUBBER WILL SLOWLY SLIP OFF, CAUSING LOSS OF PRESSURE AND AUTOMATIC ACCELERATION. MUST GET PROBLEM FIXED OR GET RID OF CAR. I HAVE STARTED A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST GM FOR SAFETY VIOLATION AND THE DENIAL OF HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND DEATH. VEHICLE ACCELERATED CAUSING DEATH TO PEDESTRIAN. *JB

Negative 1992 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Devonte Hermann 2025-01-09

The engine had to be rebuilt around 110,000 miles, even with excellent mileage.

  2. Clay Goldner 2025-01-08

All is well, except for the foundation. It's hard to enjoy the vehicle when it leaves you stranded on the roadside five to eight times a year. Unfortunately, at 95k everything seems to start breaking down - from the fuel pump to the transmission, starter, alternator, electrical system, ABS, and more. It's frustrating, but perhaps it's just an engineering miracle cleverly designed to fall apart around 100k. Maybe some engineer thought that consumers would simply buy another one, but that's not always the case.

  3. Jovani Labadie 2024-11-08

I had the car for a year before all the chaos started. During that time, I had to replace the alternator about six times, as well as the battery, computer chip, radiator, and water pump. I had it tuned up twice in one year because it was missing/skipping and did not run smoothly. Unfortunately, I was breaking down about every three months or so, and the money spent on trying to maintain it was unbelievable. Every item that needed to be replaced was impossible to get to. Based on my experience, I probably will not own a Pontiac again. Fixing this was very taxing...

  4. Isaac Lind 2024-08-19

Hi there! I bought this car about 3 years ago with 160,000 miles on it. Since then, I've had no major issues except for an oxygen sensor that went out. It runs great, gets pretty good mileage, and is super reliable. However, there are a few minor things to note. For example, it tends to leak water when it rains, coins can easily fall into the lighter and blow fuses, the front passenger door stopped opening, and my rearview mirror fell off at one point. These are all small annoyances, but overall the car runs well.

  5. Christ Marquardt 2024-07-02

I have been driving this car for 8 years and it has been through a lot. At 25,000 miles, I had to have the transmission rebuilt and I have gone through four sets of tires and brakes. Unfortunately, the car has experienced some issues such as a broken window track, a stuck automatic lockup torque converter (which makes a grinding noise), electrical problems, and engine idling issues. Additionally, the car locks its doors unexpectedly. Despite these challenges, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and appreciate the memories I have made in this car.

Positive 1992 Pontiac Grand am car reviews

  1. Harmon Skiles 2024-11-20

I purchased this car new and have driven the wheels off it. I have changed the oil faithfully every 3000- 3500 miles. Other than a head gasket about every 160,000 miles, and routine brakes about every 70,000 miles I have had nothing but superb reliability. After 340,000 miles I still have original clutch, stater, master cyl, fuel pump, all signal and brake bulbs, air conditioning still functions as new. I wish all of my cars could have been this reliable. The only breakdowns I have had in all those miles is a failed crank sensor ,2 times.

  2. Price Lehner 2024-10-27

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share that I bought this car about 4 years ago and have had only minor trouble with it, such as brakes and tires. Even at 140,000 miles, the car is still in good condition. I have no regrets about purchasing this car.

  3. Stevie Grant 2024-10-25

The Pontiac Grand Am will be the only car I will ever own. This car is very dependable, sporty, and has a great interior design. It's just a great car! I bought it used with 99,000 miles on it and it's worth every penny. I would definitely recommend a Grand Am to anyone.

  4. Francis Bosco 2024-10-24

It's a great car, but unfortunately the Quad 4 engine has a reputation for being unreliable. Although it's a great engine when it's working, it can be expensive to fix due to its complexity. The head gasket is a common issue, usually occurring around 120,000 miles. Mine is currently leaking at 130,000 miles, and the repair cost is around $1,100 for a new head gasket or $2,400 for a new head. Additionally, GM used iron rotors on the car, but replacing them with steel ones can reduce the likelihood of warping.

  5. Griffin Mayer 2024-10-14

Hey there! I wanted to share that I just got this ride and it's been a blast to drive. It's in really good shape too!
