1997 Pontiac Grand am problems
The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.
The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.
These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.
A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.
All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it way back in August of 1996 and it's been a great ride ever since! The only issue I had was last year when my driver side power window stopped working, but the dealer took care of it for me. I've put 89,000 miles on it and it still has the power to get up and go. I did have to replace the brakes and rotors twice, but besides that, the car is sound. Overall, I highly recommend the Grand Am GT. Thanks for listening!
-
I purchased my Grand Am GT in early 98 with 7500 miles. I now have 128000 on it and it has been very good to me. I've maintained it well. I have had few problems. I replaced the water pump at around 65,000 miles. Both window regulators have went bad. I also just replaced the alternator. Overall I think it has been pretty good. It still runs, drives, and looks like new although now there are some rattles in the interior. The door panels are made cheep. The factory stereo/wCD sounds great although the display quit working. I have the 2.4/auto combination. It performs well. Power is good. It also delivers outstanding fuel economy. I recently drove half way
-
Great choice for Quality, Safety, and Reliability. I really appreciate some of its features more than those of other larger vehicles I've owned.
-
Great little ride! I was originally considering a Honda or Toyota, but ended up choosing an American model due to the price options. In addition to the great fuel economy, I absolutely love this car!
-
The 2.4 4 cyl engine gave us the perfect balance between power and economy that we were looking for. To our surprise, we were able to purchase it for $2000 less than we had expected. Even today, four years later, we still get an average of 31 mpg and it has 230,000 miles on it. The only issue we had was when the water pump went out at about 75,000 miles, but thankfully the 6 month warranty extension we purchased covered that repair. It still has great acceleration when we need to pass someone going 65 MPH, picking up quickly and allowing us to get around the other driver without any delay. We're happy to report that everything is still tight and nothing has come/fallen off of the interior or exterior.

The car looks great, but I've been experiencing some issues with the 4 Cyl manual engine. Unfortunately, the acceleration is not as strong as I had hoped. I'm not sure if there's a problem with the engine, but it's been a bit discouraging. Additionally, I've had some trouble with the engine sputtering shortly after starting, which can be a bit nerve-wracking when stuck in an intersection. On the bright side, the car has no rust and the fog lights are the only issue I've noticed. They appear to be burned out and a bit difficult to access. There are also some underbody flaps near the engine that are hanging down. Overall, I do like the car, but I've found that I need to rev over 3.5 rpm to get the horsepower I need.

Based on my personal experience, I would advise smart buyers to avoid the quad four engine and Pontiacs in general. My 97 Grand Am alone has cost me over $3000 in repairs. In my opinion, it may be more worthwhile for buyers to consider quality cars from overseas or Ford. Thank you for considering my advice.
Dallin Harris 2024-09-12
Until last week, I was a loyal Pontiac customer. However, when my water pump failed, I was shocked to learn that replacing it would cost over $800 due to the complexity of the Quad4 engine. Even my landlord, who owns an auto repair shop, refused to work on it. My husband is currently in the process of disassembling the engine just to access the water pump. Unfortunately, I have decided to sell the car within a month to avoid further expenses, including $1500 for a used head plus labor.
Leif Konopelski 2024-08-03
This vehicle is a great choice for single people who don't need much room in a car. However, it may be too small for a family. The car performs well and is a stable vehicle to have around.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Grand Am. I bought it back in '97 with only 4 miles on it, and now it has over 105,000! The only repair I've had to do was a water pump at around 50,000 miles. Other than normal maintenance, the car has not cost me anything. It runs great every day. I have the 4 cyl / 5 speed combo which works great. I do wish that they had offered the 5 speed with the 6 cyl engine, but overall, I've been very happy with my Grand Am.
