Pontiac Firebird problems

The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile built and produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM's Chevrolet division's platform-sharing Camaro. This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang. The name "Firebird" was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird series of concept cars in the 1950s.
First generation (1967–1969)
The first generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. Announcing a Pontiac styling trend, the Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro. The Firebird's rear "slit" taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO and Pontiac Grand Prix. Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. Originally, the car was a "consolation prize" for Pontiac, which had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales, and gave Pontiac a piece of the "pony car" market by sharing the F-body platform with Chevrolet. The listed retail price before options for the coupe was $2,666 ($24,361 in 2023 dollars) and the convertible was $2,903 ($28,519 in 2023 dollars).
The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the Pontiac 230 cu in (3.8 L) SOHC inline-six. Based on the architecture of the standard Chevrolet 230 cu in (3.8 L) inline-six, it was fitted with a one-barrel Rochester carburetor and rated at 165 hp (123 kW). The "Sprint" model six came with a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215 hp (160 kW). Most buyers opted for one of three V8s: the 326 cu in (5.3 L) with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 hp (186 kW); the four-barrel "HO" (high output) 326, producing 285 hp (213 kW); or the 325 hp (242 kW) 400 cu in (6.6 L) from the GTO. All 1967–1968 400 CI engines had throttle restrictors that blocked the carburetors' secondaries from fully opening. A "Ram Air" option was also available, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a hotter camshaft. Power for the Ram Air package was the same as the conventional 400 HO, but peaked at 5,200 rpm.
The 230 cu in (3.8 L) engines were subsequently enlarged for 1968 to 250 cubic inches (4.1 liters), the base version developing an increased 175 hp (130 kW) using a one-barrel carburetor, and the high-output Sprint version the same 215 hp with a four-barrel carburetor. Also for the 1968 model, the 326 cu in (5.3 L) engine was replaced by the Pontiac 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, which actually displaced 354 cu in (5.8 L), and produced 265 hp (198 kW) with a two-barrel carburetor. An HO version of the 350 cu in (5.7 L) with a revised cam was also offered to start in that year, which developed 320 hp (239 kW). The power output of the other engines was increased marginally.
There was an additional Ram Air IV option for the 400 cu in (6.6 L) V8 engines during 1969, complementing the Ram Air 400(now often colloquially but incorrectly called the "Ram Air III," a name never used by Pontiac). The Ram Air IV was rated at 345 hp (350 PS; 257 kW) at 5000 rpm and 430 lb⋅ft (583 N⋅m) of torque at 3400 rpm; and 335 hp (340 PS; 250 kW) respectively. The 350 cu in (5.7 L) HO engine was revised again with a different cam and cylinder heads resulting in 325 hp (242 kW). During 1969 a special 303 cu in (5.0 L) engine was designed for Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) road racing applications that were not available in production cars.
Modifications for 1968 included the addition of federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the turn signals were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side. The front door vent-windows was replaced with a single pane of glass and Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system. The 1969 model received a major facelift with a new front-end design but unlike the GTO, it did not have the Endura bumper. The instrument panel and steering wheel were revised. The ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to the steering column with the introduction of GM's new locking ignition switch/steering wheel.
In March 1969, a US$1,083 ($8,998 in 2023 ) optional handling package called the "Trans Am performance and appearance package", UPC "WS4", named after the Trans Am Series, was introduced. A total of 689 hardtops and eight convertibles were made.
Due to engineering problems that delayed the introduction of the new 1970 Firebird beyond the usual fall debut, Pontiac continued production of 1969 model Firebirds into the early months of the 1970 model year (the other 1970 Pontiac models had been introduced on September 18, 1969). By late spring of 1969, Pontiac had deleted all model-year references on Firebird literature and promotional materials, anticipating the extended production run of the then-current 1969 models.

Common Pontiac Firebird problems
Based on complaints from owners of Pontiac Firebird cars, common problems with different generations of the Firebird include:
- 1st Generation (1967-1969) Firebird:
- Rust: Rust problems, especially in areas like rocker panels and rear quarter panels, are common due to the age of these cars. Regular inspections and prompt rust treatment are essential to prevent extensive damage.
- Electrical Issues: Common electrical problems include malfunctioning gauges, faulty switches, and ignition system issues. These components can wear out over time, affecting the car's electrical functions.
- Suspension Weakness: The first-generation Firebird is known for having a relatively weak suspension system, impacting the car's handling and performance. Upgrading to a more robust suspension can enhance driving experience.
- Engine Troubles: Engine issues, like oil leaks, overheating, and carburetor/fuel system problems, are not uncommon. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to keep the engine running smoothly.
- 2nd Generation (1970-1981) Firebird:
- Rust: Similar to the first generation, rust is a significant issue in areas like rear quarter panels and trunk floors. Regular inspections and rust treatment are vital to prevent further damage.
- Electrical Problems: Common electrical issues include malfunctioning gauges, faulty switches, and ignition system problems. Due to the numerous electrical components, wear and damage can occur over time.
- Transmission Troubles: Issues with the Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission, such as slipping gears and hard shifting, are common. Regular maintenance and addressing transmission problems promptly are essential for smooth operation.
- Engine Challenges: Engine problems, like oil leaks, overheating, and carburetor/fuel system issues, are prevalent. Proper maintenance and addressing engine issues promptly can help maintain performance.
These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, timely repairs, and thorough inspections to ensure the Pontiac Firebird's longevity and optimal performance.

- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-01
- Date Complaint: 2022-08-13
- VIN: 2G2FV22GXW2
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel lines on this car are non-metallic. Apparently, some sharp-toothed critter bit the line causing a fuel leak as confirmed by the independent service center indicated on the uploaded invoice. There was no warning. I noticed a puddle under the differential. Replacement lines are no longer available from manufacturer. Problem must be known because repair kits (see invoice) are available. "Best" solution is replacement of existing nylon lines with metallic lines (as should have been done when the car was first manufactured). As this would be an extremely costly and impractical repair, may I suggest an alternative: cover the fuel lines with a braided stainless steel sheath. This would be effective as well as both practical and relatively inexpensive. Leaving the lines exposed risks further damage and increased possibility of fire. My car is available for inspection upon request.

- Summary: FRONT TURN SIGNALS GO OUT EVERY FEW WEEKS. THE PROBLEM IS THE DESIGN OF THE SOCKET, WHICH IS NOT SEALED WELL CAUSING THE SOCKET TO SHORT OUT. I HAVE REPLACED THE SOCKET AND LIGHT-BULBS MULTIPLE TIMES. I AM CONCERNED BECAUSE I FEEL TURN SIGNALS ARE VITALLY IMPORTANT, AND ACCIDENTS COULD AND DO OCCUR WITHOUT THEM. ALSO, SINCE THE SOCKETS ARE SHORTING OUT, I AM WORRIED THAT A BIGGER ELECTRICAL PROBLEM COULD MANIFEST BECAUSE OF THAT. I KNOW THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS OF THESE CARS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS, BUT I AM CONFUSED WHY A RECALL FOR SUCH A BAD AND DANGEROUS DESIGN HAS NOT BEEN PUT INTO PLACE.

I FILLED IT OUT, GOT TWO ESTIMATES OF $1125.65 AND $1485.97 FOR REPAIRS TO MY VEHICLE, AND SENT IT BACK TO THEM ON AUGUST 10TH, 2015 FOR PROCESSING. I CALLED TODAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND, 2015 TO FIND OUT THE PROGRESS OF MY CLAIM. When I was considering trading in my 92 Firebird V-6 3.8, I took a test drive in this car. Although I still liked my 92, it had over 200,000 miles on it! I found the performance to be outstanding, and the car is very comfortable. The extra features such as the Traction Control system and the 6-speed transmission only add to the performance. The gas mileage is excellent for a V8, it is close to that of my former V6. I highly recommend this model.

I've owned an '88 Dodge Aries, '95 Geo Metro, and an '02 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. After driving my truck for so long, I never thought I'd go back to driving a car. However, with gas prices at $4 a gallon and a 60-mile daily commute, I had to reconsider. When I went in for a trade-in, I was shown three less-than-ideal cars, one of which wouldn't even start! But then I saw the '01 Firebird and took it for a spin. I couldn't stop giggling the whole time! Despite having 75K miles and not being well-maintained, she purrs like a dream and turns heads wherever I go. Who needs a truck when you have a car like this? :D

A Trans Am is a great car for drivers who are really responsible and use caution. I love driving my car everywhere I go because it is very dependable and fuel efficient. I believe Trans Ams are very popular among U.S. consumers today. I think they will bring these popular cars back out on the market soon because people can't live without them.

I've owned my 2002 Trans Am convertible for 10 years now, and it's hands down the best car I've ever had. It's a yellow collector's edition with a 6-speed manual WS6, and it runs like a dream. Every time I get behind the wheel, I get goosebumps. It's a fabulous muscle car that I plan on keeping for life. Everywhere I go, people ask me about the car and if I want to sell it. But, no way! I couldn't have more fun on the road and I hope to stay out of trouble. This car is my dream car, and I couldn't be happier with it.

I absolutely love driving this car! It's been so much fun, especially since I added a K&N air intake and flowmaster exhaust, tinted the windows really dark, and put on some chrome rims and performance tires. Recently, I upgraded the sound system and replaced everything, and now I couldn't be happier with it. Even though it may only have a TMV of $2300, I wouldn't sell it for triple that amount. If I could, I would drive this car for the rest of my life, but unfortunately, no car lasts that long.

Although I bought this vehicle for my son back in 2000, it has been a constant source of frustration and expense. However, I have taken care of all the issues that have arisen, including power windows, emission problems, fuel tank and pump replacements, rear diff and pinion seal replacements, light switches, and power steering pump leaks. Despite the numerous repairs, this car has only 68,000 miles on it. In comparison, my Toyota 4Runner has 165,000 miles and has only required brake replacements. While I have had a negative experience with this American-made car, I remain confident in the reliability of other vehicles on the market.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the car. While it was a nice car for its time, I've found that owning one today can be quite costly. Unfortunately, I've had to spend more money on repairs than what the car is worth or what I paid for it, even though it has under 60,000 miles. Maybe some last longer, but mine has been giving me some trouble ever since I owned it. Right now, it's not working properly and nobody has been able to figure out why. I'm a bit tired of repairing things, so I think I'm going to sell it for a loss. Before purchasing, I would advise you to look into the reliability of these cars. While some can last a long time, mine has been a bit of a challenge. I've gotten to know a few mechanics well, unfortunately. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey there! It's been 18 months since I got my Trans Am and I absolutely love it! There are so many things to love about it - the LS1 engine has tons of torque in all 6 gears, it's a fast car that turns heads and attracts attention. However, I must admit that the reliability of this car is a bit of a letdown. There are numerous problems with it, such as the push rods that bend too easily. Despite that, I haven't had any other engine problems. The rear axle is also quite sensitive - I lost my rear end twice at 60mph when my car had only 46,000 and 47,000 miles on it. But hey, they upgraded the clutch in 2001 for a reason (2001s have a 'Vette Z06 spec clutch)! Is it fast? Yes. Is it fun? Absolutely! Am I satisfied? You bet! Does it hold its value? Yes, relative to the market. But when it comes to reliability, unfortunately, it's a no. Hope this helps!

There seem to be some issues with oil leaking from the back of the engine and on the muffler 'Y' pipe, which is causing fumes to enter the interior of the car. Additionally, there is some noticeable noise coming from the rear, particularly when running idle downhill, which may be related to the differential or a similar part. On a positive note, the performance is great. However, it would be wonderful if GM could fix these problems (which have been found on newer models too) and perhaps even increase the power on the V6 3800 platform. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention.

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up about my experience with this car. Unfortunately, I had a blown motor at 70000 miles due to a mechanical defect, and it ended up being quite expensive to fix. For example, the distributor cap on other cars usually costs between 10 or 20 dollars, but on this car, it costs over 300 and requires taking the water pump off to change it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this car because of the potential repair costs. You could probably own a Lexus for the same amount of money in the long run!
