1992 Pontiac Firebird problems
The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile built and produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM's Chevrolet division's platform-sharing Camaro. This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang. The name "Firebird" was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird series of concept cars in the 1950s.
First generation (1967–1969)
The first generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. Announcing a Pontiac styling trend, the Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro. The Firebird's rear "slit" taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO and Pontiac Grand Prix. Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. Originally, the car was a "consolation prize" for Pontiac, which had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales, and gave Pontiac a piece of the "pony car" market by sharing the F-body platform with Chevrolet. The listed retail price before options for the coupe was $2,666 ($24,361 in 2023 dollars) and the convertible was $2,903 ($28,519 in 2023 dollars).
The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the Pontiac 230 cu in (3.8 L) SOHC inline-six. Based on the architecture of the standard Chevrolet 230 cu in (3.8 L) inline-six, it was fitted with a one-barrel Rochester carburetor and rated at 165 hp (123 kW). The "Sprint" model six came with a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215 hp (160 kW). Most buyers opted for one of three V8s: the 326 cu in (5.3 L) with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 hp (186 kW); the four-barrel "HO" (high output) 326, producing 285 hp (213 kW); or the 325 hp (242 kW) 400 cu in (6.6 L) from the GTO. All 1967–1968 400 CI engines had throttle restrictors that blocked the carburetors' secondaries from fully opening. A "Ram Air" option was also available, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a hotter camshaft. Power for the Ram Air package was the same as the conventional 400 HO, but peaked at 5,200 rpm.
The 230 cu in (3.8 L) engines were subsequently enlarged for 1968 to 250 cubic inches (4.1 liters), the base version developing an increased 175 hp (130 kW) using a one-barrel carburetor, and the high-output Sprint version the same 215 hp with a four-barrel carburetor. Also for the 1968 model, the 326 cu in (5.3 L) engine was replaced by the Pontiac 350 cu in (5.7 L) V8, which actually displaced 354 cu in (5.8 L), and produced 265 hp (198 kW) with a two-barrel carburetor. An HO version of the 350 cu in (5.7 L) with a revised cam was also offered to start in that year, which developed 320 hp (239 kW). The power output of the other engines was increased marginally.
There was an additional Ram Air IV option for the 400 cu in (6.6 L) V8 engines during 1969, complementing the Ram Air 400(now often colloquially but incorrectly called the "Ram Air III," a name never used by Pontiac). The Ram Air IV was rated at 345 hp (350 PS; 257 kW) at 5000 rpm and 430 lb⋅ft (583 N⋅m) of torque at 3400 rpm; and 335 hp (340 PS; 250 kW) respectively. The 350 cu in (5.7 L) HO engine was revised again with a different cam and cylinder heads resulting in 325 hp (242 kW). During 1969 a special 303 cu in (5.0 L) engine was designed for Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) road racing applications that were not available in production cars.
Modifications for 1968 included the addition of federally-mandated side marker lights: for the front of the car, the turn signals were made larger and extended to wrap around the front edges of the car, and on the rear, the Pontiac (V-shaped) Arrowhead logo was added to each side. The front door vent-windows was replaced with a single pane of glass and Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system. The 1969 model received a major facelift with a new front-end design but unlike the GTO, it did not have the Endura bumper. The instrument panel and steering wheel were revised. The ignition switch was moved from the dashboard to the steering column with the introduction of GM's new locking ignition switch/steering wheel.
In March 1969, a US$1,083 ($8,998 in 2023 ) optional handling package called the "Trans Am performance and appearance package", UPC "WS4", named after the Trans Am Series, was introduced. A total of 689 hardtops and eight convertibles were made.
Due to engineering problems that delayed the introduction of the new 1970 Firebird beyond the usual fall debut, Pontiac continued production of 1969 model Firebirds into the early months of the 1970 model year (the other 1970 Pontiac models had been introduced on September 18, 1969). By late spring of 1969, Pontiac had deleted all model-year references on Firebird literature and promotional materials, anticipating the extended production run of the then-current 1969 models.

Common 1992 Pontiac Firebird problems
The Pontiac Firebird, produced from 1982 to 1992, is known for its performance and style. However, like any car, it has its fair share of common problems. One of the most common issues is with the fuel injection system, which can include clogged fuel injectors, faulty fuel pumps, and issues with the fuel pressure regulator. These problems can cause issues with starting the car, poor performance, and decreased fuel efficiency.
Another common issue with the third-generation Firebird is a malfunctioning throttle position sensor. This can cause a variety of issues, including rough idling, hesitation when accelerating, and even stalling. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to have the throttle position sensor checked and replaced if necessary.
The third-generation Firebird is also known for having issues with the automatic transmission. Common problems include slipping gears, delayed shifting, and issues with the torque converter. If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to have the transmission checked and repaired or replaced as needed.
Finally, the 1982-1992 Firebird is prone to rust, particularly in the rear quarter panels and trunk area. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance can help to address these issues before they become more extensive and costly to repair.
In addition, some common problems reported by owners of the 1992 Firebird include a faulty heater core and a malfunctioning gas gauge. The heater core can cause the car to overheat, while a malfunctioning gas gauge can make it difficult to know how much fuel is in the tank.
The 1992 Firebird can also have issues with the engine, including a rough idle and timing chain problems. These issues can cause the engine to run poorly and may require replacement of the timing chain or other engine components.
The electrical system can also be a source of problems for the 1992 Firebird. Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the interior lights and power windows.
The HVAC system can also be a source of problems for the 1992 Firebird. Some owners have reported issues with the heater core and the air conditioning system.
In summary, the Pontiac Firebird, produced from 1982 to 1992, is known for its performance and style. However, like any car, it has its fair share of common problems. These include issues with the fuel injection system, the throttle position sensor, the automatic transmission, and rust. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help to keep your Firebird running smoothly and performing at its best.

- VIN: 1G2FS23E7NL
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: THE FUEL TANK ON MY 1992 PONTIAC FIREBIRD, BEGAN LEAKING GAS. MY LOCAL MECHANIC, WHO USED TO WORK FOR G.M, MENTIONED THAT THIS WAS A MATERIAL FAILURE OF THE FUEL TANK ITSELF FOR WHICH THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ISSUED A FEW YEARS EARLIER. I CHECKED MY PERSONAL RECORDS AND THE NHTSA RECALL RECORDS, AND FOUND THAT A RECALL WAS ISSUED IN 1994 (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 94V07700). MY VEHICLE WAS CHECKED IN JANUARY 95 WITH 11,997 MILES ON IT, AND AT THAT TIME WAS NOT LEAKING.. THE VEHICLE NOW HAS APPROXIMATELY 31,000 MILES ON IT AND IS LEAKING FROM A CRACK IN THE FUEL TANK AT THAT EXACT SPOT. I HAVE CONTACTED MY LOCAL DEALESHIP, AND G.M. CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY HAVE TOLD ME THAT BECAUSE THE VEHCLE IS OVER 5 YEARS OLD THAT THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THIS DEFECTIVE TANK,EVEN THOUGH THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE CAUSE OF THE LEAK IS MATERIAL FAILURE. I BELIEVE SINCE THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 31,000 MILES ON IT, AND IS IN SHOWROOM CONDITION, AND HAS NEVER BEEN ABUSED THAT THIS IS A SAFETY MATTER THAT THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE TO FIX. *AK

The 1992 Pontiac Firebird is a real head-turner and a joy to drive. I've been the proud owner of my car for 10 years and have never experienced any major issues. Despite being a V-6, it performs like a cheetah on the open road, and I've even managed to get it up to 115 mph before having to slow down. I always use synthetic 5-30W oil, which has been proven to improve performance and gas mileage.
-
I had ordered a formula with performance pkg - 5.0 h.o. 230hp 5spd 4wheel discs, but unfortunately, GM kept rescheduling the build due to parts availability, specifically the rear disc brakes. I was told that the car would be built in the first week of December, but due to inventory, the Van Nuys Ca plant was closed for the entire month of December. I was understandably upset, but when I went to the dealer to get my deposit back, I saw a black formula with performance axle pkg. It had rear aluminum drum brakes, 5.7-liter tuned port 245hp auto trans, but was otherwise identical to what I had ordered. I took it on the spot and loved it. This car was fast as hell and got 24mpg at a steady cruise controlled 85 mph with air on. At the time, everyone praised Chevy SS454 pickups, but this car, bone stock, would beat them by 5 or 6 car lengths in the quarter mile. It had great looks, handling, and power, all for $16500, loaded. It's hard to find this kind of performance for under 35k today.
-
I've owned two '92 Pontiac Firebirds with the V8 305ci engine and automatic transmission. Both were in excellent condition. I recently sold the second one after owning it for 9 years. It was a unique teal color, which was only available on the 92's in the 3rd generation, and had only 39k miles when I bought it in 2004. I had some modifications done to it, including shorty headers, free-flowing exhaust, a K&N filter, and a Tornado, which made it a real sleeper. This car was well-built, had decent performance, and was easy to maintain. I never had any major issues with it, and it handled well in all weather conditions. Even at 20 years old, it still turned heads and received plenty of compliments. I highly recommend this car!
-
Great ride for a sports car! The sound system is good, although it could benefit from some aftermarket speakers. It's never needed any major repairs. While the top isn't power-operated, it's easy to handle alone. The cornering is fantastic, although it does seem to go through tires quickly. My only complaint is the braking - it has disc brakes in the front but drum brakes in the rear, and I think it would benefit from having disc brakes all around like the newer models do.
-
We bought this car new in '91 and put it up every winter. I couldn't wait to get it out in the spring! I think the worst thing is having it sit in the garage for months and having things dry out from not being used, which I believe led to a few repairs. But I still love to drive it and can't seem to part with it.

I've heard that some people really love their Birds and have had no issues with them. While it is an attractive car, it may not be the most reliable option. Additionally, the V6 engine may not be the most powerful option available. However, it is important to note that I was young when I got the car and my dad thought it was best for me to have a smaller engine. While I did experience some problems with the car, I don't have enough room to list them all.
