1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.

Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.

Background

General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.

First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.

The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-09-28
  • VIN: 1GHDX03EXWD
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: AS I WAS ACCELERATING INTO THE FAST LANE ON A FREEWAY IN DIAMOND BAR CA THE ACCELERATOR CABLE BROKE AND THE MOTOR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND IT WAS LIKE STEPPING ON A BRICK. THEY BARELY RESPONDED. I MADE IT TO AN OFF-RAMP, SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. THE VAN SLOWED DOWN BUT WOULD NOT STOP. I WENT UP ON THE CURB TO TRY AND SLOW IT DOWN MORE AND TO GET AROUND THE CARS WAITING AT THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OFF-RAMP. BY GOING UP ON THE CURB I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER AROUND THE CARS WITHOUT HITTING ANYONE AND MISSING LIGHT POLES. I KEPT SHIFTING FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE TO GET THE VAN TO THE SIDE STREET AND INTO THE PARKING LOT OF A CAR REPAIR. WHEN I WAS SAFELY IN THE PARKING LOT I SHIFTED INTO PARK AND TURNED OFF THE MOTOR. THE MECHANICS AT THE REPAIR SHOP SUGGESTED I REPORT THE INCIDENT SINCE THE ACCELERATOR DIDN'T REACT IN THE WAY IT SHOULD HAVE. IT WAS ONLY MY PRESENCE OF MIND AND THE ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER THAT KEPT ME FROM INJURING OTHERS AND BEING INJURED. EVERYONE I HAVE SPOKEN TO THAT KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THE ACCELERATOR CABLE HAS TOLD ME THAT IT SHOULDN'T HAPPEN THE WAY IT DID. A SAFETY MECHANISM SHOULD HAVE TAKEN OVER TO KEEP THE MOTOR FROM IDLING AT SUCH A HIGH RATE. I AM FORTUNATE TO BE ALIVE AND DON'T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS MATTER BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED. MARYLIN LEWIS 909-595-1275. *NM

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. Negative 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette car reviews

  1. Amparo Paucek 2024-09-25

Overall, I was satisfied with the silhouette. Although the reliability was not as good as expected considering the price, I found it to be very comfortable during our travels. The interior had some very nice features, such as rear individual radio controls capable of running two audio systems at once (using headphones with one). However, there were some issues, such as the intake manifold gasket needing replacing at 60k, and many problems occurring at 80k and just kept coming. Additionally, there were many hardware rattles and wind noise that became pretty bad. In the end, I decided to trade it for a Honda Odyssey.

Although we have had some frustrating experiences with this vehicle, the engine and drive train have been reliable. However, we have encountered several issues with the power sliding door, cup holders, and rubber stripping. Despite numerous trips to the shop, these problems persist. We are grateful that the check engine light issue has been resolved. In hindsight, we should have invested in a Toyota and purchased an extended warranty. Overall, we remain confident in our ability to make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing a vehicle.

  3. Thomas Von 2024-03-23

This minivan has broken down on the highway 3 times, costing over $7,000 in non-warranty repairs. However, it is important to note that the warranty period is relatively short.

  4. Jayson Vandervort 2024-01-25

I purchased this van from flat Texas last year, which put low strain on the transmission. Although 15 months later at 116k, the power slider and load leveling system are not working, and it's not worth repairing them, this van is still a great option for those on a budget. It has a low initial cost, no major engine issues, and great gas mileage for a van. The ride is smooth, and my two young boys sleep well on trips. The handling is good, and it has front and side airbags. The dual sliders are great, and the seats are comfortable. It's like a living room on wheels! While my friends have expensive SUVs, I have my van paid off and I'm happy with it!

Positive 1998 Oldsmobile Silhouette car reviews

  1. Cody Fay 2024-10-29

We purchased the car as we were looking for a spacious minivan that wasn't a Chrysler, after a negative experience with a 1991 Voyager. Unfortunately, the Silhouette had some serious electric door problems for the first three years, which the dealers had trouble resolving. Additionally, we faced some brake issues, which could have been due to normal wear and tear, but we had to turn and replace the rotors. Recently, we have been experiencing engine problems, including a coolant leak and steering pump issues, which have made the car undriveable. We have just towed it to the dealer today, on 1/5/03.

  2. Ansel Gutkowski 2024-10-02

You're not going to believe this, but we bought this van used with 150,000 miles on it and it's still going strong with 260,000 miles on the clock! We've had no major issues, just normal wear and tear, and it still gets an impressive 26+ mpg. Sure, it uses a little oil, but at that point, anything would. The exterior has one spot of rust by the sliding door, but that's it. And get this, the power door didn't work when we got it, but then it decided to work one day! Bonus!

  3. Skylar Fritsch 2024-09-03

We had some initial problems with reliability, but fortunately, GM gave us a free upgrade to a 72-month/100,000-mile $0 deductible warranty. We had to take it to the shop four times for video system modules (three times for audio and once for video), but all of it was covered under warranty. We also had some issues with the oxygen sensor (engine light on, low mpg), but it was also covered under warranty. Although we experienced an intermittent low coolant light due to air bubbles in the sensor line, the ride was comfortable, the performance was good, and there was plenty of room inside. With three kids, each one gets their own seat! The traction control is great for snow and ice, and we've never been stuck in five years. We replaced the weak original headlight bulbs with premium bulbs that are three times as bright (but still not as good as my '95 F-150). We just turned 110,000 miles, and it still drives like new.

  4. Moshe Hills 2024-06-22

This GLS has 120k miles on it as of 1/04. Although the reliability and build quality could be improved, the car is very comfortable on the road thanks to its Touring HD suspension and well-designed, supportive seats. However, there have been some issues with rattles and flimsy plastic trim pieces that break easily. Additionally, the brakes don't hold up well and the engine is underpowered for the size of the car, resulting in numerous downshifts while in cruise control on hills. It's worth noting that the 2nd row Captain's chairs don't fold forward in the '98 model.

  5. Reynold Lebsack 2024-05-23

This van has been a great addition to my family! Despite being purchased used with 115,000 miles, it has held up really well and now has 195,000 miles. The only issues we've had are with the power sliding door resetting frequently and a malfunctioning sensor for the door being closed. Recently, the A/C compressor blew out, but overall, it has been a reliable vehicle. The oil level sensor has been replaced, but it still lights up after 4 years. However, the van rides smoothly on long hauls and the leather seats have held up really well. Two years ago, we comfortably made a 1600 mile round trip from Texas to Missouri with only 2 kids, 3 dogs, and all our luggage. Since it has been well maintained, I am confident that it will last for many more thousands of miles!
