1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette problems
The Oldsmobile Silhouette is a minivan manufactured by General Motors for model years 1990–2004 over two generations.
Production ended when General Motors discontinued its Oldsmobile brand in 2004. GM continued to market badge-engineered variants of the U-body minivans, the Saturn Relay and the Buick Terraza for MY2005.
Background
General Motors' first attempt at producing a minivan to compete with the Chrysler minivans, the rear wheel drive, truck-based Chevrolet Astro and its twin, the GMC Safari failed to compete strongly against Chrysler's dominance in the minivan market in the 1980s. The 1990 Oldsmobile Silhouette and its sibling models, sold more successfully than the Astro/Safari predecessors.
First shown to the public in 1986, the Pontiac Trans Sport concept car featured futuristic styling, individually removable bucket seats with built-in stereo speakers, a gull-wing rear passenger door and extensive use of glass including a glass-paneled roof.
The Trans Sport was approved for production without the gullwing door and the glass roof. Chevrolet and Oldsmobile received production vehicles based on the Trans Sport with the Lumina APV and Silhouette respectively. While the Pontiac Trans Sport was targeted at sport- and style-oriented buyers, the Lumina was the value offering and the Silhouette targeted premium markets, competing with the Chrysler Town & Country.

I TURNED TOWARD THE TREE AND JUMPED OUT; THE VAN CRUSHED INTO THE SIDE OF THE TREE & CONTINUED TO KEEP GOING. I RAN AFTER IT AS I SAW THE VAN JUMP THE CURB AND GOING 70MPH TOWARDS THE ROW OF HOMES ACROSS THE STREET CRUSHED INTO A TREE HEAD ON. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-12
- VIN: 1GHDX03E1XD
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: REPEATED INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET LEAK / FAILURE - HAD TO REPLACE TWICE IN LESS THAN 100,000 MILES - FIRST TIME AT JUST OVER 36,000 MILES. NEVER OWNED A CAR WHERE I HAD TO REPLACE AN INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET ONCE, LET ALONE TWICE AND VIRTUALLY EVERY CAR MY FAMILY HAS OWNED HAS BEEN MAINTAINED AND DRIVEN OVER 100,000 MILES. SEARCHING THE INTERNET YOU SEE THE GM 3.4 LITER ENGINE IN 1999 ERA THIS IS A COMMON COMPLAINT/PROBLEM. ALSO THE ORIGINAL OLDSMOBILE DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED IT WAS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS ENGINE. THERE IS ALSO A LAWSUIT WWW.DEXCOOLSETTLEMENT.COM SHOWING HOW PREVALENT THIS ISSUE IS - YET GM REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT IS A DEFECT AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND VEHICLE OWNERS BY REPAIRING THESE VEHICLES AND CHANGING THE GASKET DESIGN. IT WAS BAD ENOUGH HAVING TO SPEND CLOSE TO $500 TO REPAIR THIS ON MY OLDSMOBILE WITH JUST OVER 36,000 MILES ON IT, NOW I AM TOLD TO PAY CLOSE TO $1,000 TO HAVE IT REPLACED AGAIN! GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE INSISTS THERE IS NO DEFECT, THERE IS NOTHING ABNORMAL ABOUT THIS THAT REQUIRES ANY CORRECTIVE ACTION OR "ASSISTANCE" FROM GM. THEY FURTHER CLAIM GM ENGINEERS HAVE REVIEWED THE INCOMING DATA TO CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AND THERE IS NO PROBLEM / NO TREND WITH INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS ON THE 3.4 LITER ENGINE - THAT CAN NOT BE THE TRUTH. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR ITEM, AN INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET SHOULD LAST THE LIFE OF THE ENGINE AND IF NOT, GM SHOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT AND REPLACE IT FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS. OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM HAVE HAD ENGINE SEIZURES AND SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEMS BECAUSE THEY DID NOT NOTICE OR CATCH THE PROBLEM SOON ENOUGH AND COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE OIL CAUSED ENGINE SEIZURE AND/OR OVERHEATING. ORIGINAL PROBLEM WAS FEBRUARY 2003, PROBLEM HAS RE-OCCURRED OCTOBER 2008 SO CLEARLY GM DID NOTHING TO CHANGE THE GASKET DESIGN AND DOES NOT EVEN STAND BEHIND THEIR SERVICE / REPLACEMENT PARTS. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-13
- VIN: 1GHDX03E0XD
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE ACCELERATOR CABLE SNAPPED WHILE PULLING OUT OF A STOP SIGN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC LEADING TO LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL. THIS ALMOST LED TO THE CAR GETTING REAR ENDED. QUICK THINKING BY MY WIFE WHO WAS DRIVING, ENABLED HER TO GET INTO THE LEFT TURN LANE, CUT ACROSS INCOMING TRAFFIC AND THEN DRIVE OVER THE CURB AND INTO A VACANT LOT TO AVOID BEING STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD DURING RUSH HOUR. THIS DAMAGED THE FRONT WHEELS, SCRAPED THE UNDERCARRIAGE AREA AND KNOCKED THE FRONT WHEELS OUT OF ALIGNMENT. THE CABLE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. IT APPEARS THIS MAY BE A POTENTIAL DESIGN DEFECT SINCE THE CABLE MAY BE RUBBING AGAINST THE HOUSING AS IT EXITS THE FIREWALL AND CONNECTS TO THE PEDAL LINKAGE. THE CABLE WAS FRAYED SUGGESTING IT WAS RUBBING AGAINST SOMETHING. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY PROBLEM

NO ACCIDENTS HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THIS PROBLEM YET!*JB
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-01-01

THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS THE THERMOSTAT HOWEVER WHEN TAKEN TO MECHANIC FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THAT HAS LEAKING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. I CALLED OLDSMOBILE REF TO THE PROBLEM TO INQUIRE ABOUT TSB # 030601010 OR 030601010B AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE HAD NEVER BEEN A BULLETIN. *JB
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-03-01
- VIN: 1GHDX03E3XD
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: ON TWO OCCASIONS IN 2005, WE HAD INCIDENCES OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. WE OWN A 1999 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE MINIVAN AND IN GENERAL IT HAS BEEN A TROUBLE-FREE VEHICLE. IT IS WELL-MAINTAINED BY THE CHEVROLET-OLDSMOBILE DEALER. IN THE FIRST INCIDENT MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AND EASING INTO A PARKING PLACE WITH HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE. WHEN ABOUT 5 FEET FROM A CAR PARKED IN FRONT OF HER, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. SINCE SHE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BRAKE SHE MANAGED TO STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE HITTING IT. ABOUT A MONTH LATER, I WAS EASING THE CAR INTO OUR GARAGE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AND AS I APPROACHED RACKS AT THE BACK OF THE GARAGE, THE TIRES SQUEALED FORWARD BUT SINCE I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE I MANAGED TO STOP BEFORE HITTING THE RACK. I MEASURED THE DISTANCE FROM THE TIRE MARKS ON THE GARAGE FLOOR AND DETERMINED THAT THE BUMPER WAS ABOUT 3 FEET FROM THE RACK WHEN THE TIRES SPUN. IF I OR MY WIFE HAD PUSHED ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ACCIDENTALLY, WE COULD NOT HAVE POSSIBLY STOPPED IN TIME TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. I AM A RETIRED MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND I CAN ASSURE THAT THIS INFORMATION IS CORRECT. IN BOTH CASES WE WERE USING OUR RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE WHEN THE ACCELERATION OCCURRED. WE SUSPECT THE CRUISE CONTROL WHICH WAS ACTIVATED IN BOTH CASES. WE HAVE SINCE BEEN CAREFUL TO KEEP IT DEACTIVATED. BECAUSE OF THE TIRE STREAKS ON THE GARAGE FLOOR, I CAN PROVE THAT I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AT THE TIME OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. WE HAVE NOT HAD A RECURRENCE SINCE WE HAVE KEPT THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATED. *NM

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POWER SLIDING DOOR INTERIOR HANDLE ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A POWER OR MANUAL SLIDING DOOR ON THE DRIVER-SIDE, THE INTERIOR HANDLE WILL ALSO BE REPLACED FOR APPEARANCE REASONS. NOTE: BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS SERVICED, GM ADVISES OWNERS TO NOT USE THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. THE DRIVER CAN OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR FROM SWITCHES AT THE DRIVER'S POSITION OR BY USING THE REMOTE KEY FOB. THE DRIVER SHOULD TELL PASSENGERS TO USE THE SWITCH LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE DOOR TO OPEN OR CLOSE IT. THE DRIVER SHOULD USE THE OVERRIDE SWITCH TO PREVENT OPERATION OF THE POWER DOOR BY CHILDREN OR BY OTHERS WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH ITS USE. I was fortunate enough to purchase this mini-van brand new in August 1999, thanks to the guidance of a wonderful salesperson. Instead of opting for a driver's side electrical seat, he suggested a different Shilloute model that was perfect for my needs. It had a spacious three-passenger middle seat and room for three more in the back, as well as a towing package and rear audio and air heat controls. My wife and I were thrilled with the amount of space it provided for our family. The towing package also included self-leveling rear shocks, which were incredibly useful. Additionally, the air compressor was a great feature that allowed us to fill up almost anything, including our own tires if needed. Our neighbor, who happens to be a Porsche salesman, even mentioned how all of his mechanics swore by the 3.4L engine of GM.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Olds Silhouette Premiere. It sounds like you have had a great experience with it! I appreciate your detailed comparison to other minivans you have owned for your company vehicles. It's great to hear that the gas mileage is good and that the interior is quiet on the highway. It's also impressive that you have only needed regular maintenance like new tires, brakes, and oil changes. Based on your positive experience, I would definitely recommend this van to anyone looking for a spacious and comfortable ride. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts! Best regards, [Your Name]

I've loved it from the start. My kids love the LCD player and game hook-ups. It's great for trips! The car rides smoothly, handles great and is very roomy. I haven't had any major problems at all. I would definitely buy one again!

I bought this van 2 months ago used and I absolutely love it! It's a 1999 premiere edition and it's been a great addition to our family. The only issue we've had is that the auxiliary inputs for the TV aren't working, but the VCP works perfectly fine. Unfortunately, it's quite expensive to repair those inputs, costing up to $500.00. However, the kids are always entertained on long trips thanks to the TV/VCP and we've even taken it on a road trip from Washington to California without any problems. The ride is incredibly smooth and comfortable. While the gas mileage isn't the best at around 20mpg, it's still a great minivan overall!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1999 Olds Silhouette that I purchased new. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the shop a few times for some repairs. These include tire tread separation which cost $50, transmission work which cost $1200, and an intake manifold leak which cost $713. Currently, the vehicle has 48,000 miles on it. Thanks for listening!
