2015 Volkswagen Golf problems
The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).
The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.
Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.
The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

It has been confirmed by a dealership. It has not been inspected by the police, manufacturer, or insurance company. There have been occasional reports of low coolant, and the coolant drains significantly faster than expected especially in cold weather (e.g. needing to fill coolant every 7 days). It was first repaired in 2019, and has since failed again.

The problem went away but i still took it to the dealership and i was told it might be the head gasket of the engine or thermostat/waterpump, a $4000 repair. Was advised to just sell the car. VW should address this issue as it has been a long issue now
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-03
- VIN: 3VW2A7AU5FM
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: One night I started hearing a crunching noise while I was turning my wheel at low speeds. I backed out of a parking spot and started to turn the wheel to hear the full extent of the noise. The next morning, I got up and went out, backed up the car, turned the wheel to the same noise coming from the steering wheel. About an hour later, I drove home and turned into my parking spot, when the noise got worse and then stopped. At the end of the noise, two error codes arose: Airbag and transmission error. The steering wheel controls, such as volume and song control do not work, as well as other functions on the wheel, such as the dash control and cruise control buttons. I quickly googled the symptoms around the make, model and year and saw mass amounts of Volkswagen vehicles around 2015 that experienced the same issues, and the issue of a faulty clock-spring being the culprit. With this in mind, I reached out to a Volkswagen dealership to relay my concerns and the conversation ended with an appointment booked and a consensus that the issue was a faulty clock-spring, as many have had this issue. This issue seems to be widespread throughout many years and models of the Volkswagen line, however, my car follows a wide group of cars by one year in manufacture date, yet it lacks a recall part, despite the believed widespread affected group of cars. My appointment with the Volkswagen dealership went as expected- they found that my clock spring was indeed the issue. The service advisor admitted that the "clock-springs are bound to break." However, my car is 6,000 miles out of warranty to be able to cover the cost of this repair at the moment of typing this. And with further confirmation, the clock spring part is not a recalled part, thus deeming the uncovered service, despite the admittance to a faulty and common issue. I drove a significant distance to reach my dealership with the fear of my stearing wheel locking up while I am driving on the freeway. It has yet to lock.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-16
- VIN: 3VW2A7AU1FM
- Components: SUSPENSION

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-29
- VIN: 3VW217AU9FM
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Air bag error appeared on dashboard. Horn is not functioning as well. May be due to a faulty switch in the steering.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-12
- VIN: 3VW817AU7FM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was putting gas and it started shooting out gas from the tank fuel. I had filled up 2 gallons and the entire two gallons ended up on the floor of the gas station. I took the car to an old Volkswagen specialist and he suggested I get an evap system smoke test to determine what the problem is. I did the test and it came back as a faulty evap canister. That the evap vent valve is stuck closed and purge is allowing fuel into the canister. So I bought an oem canister and replaced the old one. For one day the car drove fine with no issue putting gas or any leaks. The next day I noticed the smell of gas and saw that it was leaking gas from behind the rear wheel. I took it to a local mechanic and the car leaked the remaining 60 miles of gas on the floor. Also the new canister is filled with gas again.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-11
- VIN: 3VW2A7AUXFM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: Over the last two months, I've had over 30 incidences where the car will either randomly shift extremely hard into a gear or will hesitate, stutter, lose power while accelerating. Some of the shifts have been so hard that they've thrown me forward. Some of the losses of power are extremely dangerous as I'm accelerating at highway speeds. I have a full log of at least 30 of these incidents (and detailed as best I could) and they are attached. I picked May 11th because that was the hardest shift/loss of power which caused me the greatest harm. I've been able to reproduce the errors in drive, sport, and Tiptronic mode. The errors occur in all gears, but are most common in 2nd and 3rd (although the higher gears are involved as well), which leads me to believe it's not the transmission, yet the mechatronics unit or something outside of the transmission and engine itself. The troubling issue here is that the car is recording absolutely zero fault codes for diagnosis; that is, the car is shifting, stuttering, hesitating randomly and erratically and no diagnostics are being provided to resolve the issue. Technicians are able to guess what the issue is, but cannot give a guarantee what the problem is without the fault codes. This is the greatest safety concern, but luckily no crashes so far. I was interested to learn that there was a recall on the same model by the Australian government related to the pressure accumulator and I'd like to see if this could be the issue, since I'm experiencing the same symptoms as those described in the recall: https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-005369. The contact stated that the loss of power issue still persists. The contact stated the issue is a faulty crank trigger.
STRUCTURE,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-01
- VIN: 3VW2A7AU6FM
- Components: STRUCTURE,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Discovered several inches of water in the spare tire boot area. The entire back seat was also soaked through. Water appears to be leaking into the car from rear pressure vents behind the bumper or from another undetermined source, posing risks including black mold and damage to the spare tire.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-02
- VIN: 3VW217AUXFM
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Left rear coil spring failed and is not available for inspection. The car was difficult to control when the spring failed which put driver safety at risk. The car was brought to an independent service center and confirmed that the failure was a left rear coil spring which required replacing both the left and right rear coil springs. The component was not inspected by the manufacturer. There were no warning signs or symptoms of the problem prior to failure. The car suddenly start making a loud noise in the rear left section of the vehicle while driving.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-12
- VIN: 3VW2A7AU3FM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The frame and track of the sun roof has developed a crack. It is available for inspection upon request. Because the frame/track developed a crack in the structural material, I can hear it rattling when I drive, which tells me it is loose. A loose sun roof structural system is not good, as driving on a freeway / highway at a higher speed could possibly cause the sun roof to become detached and fly off of the vehicle, or dislodge enough to distract the driver. Another secondary problem that has happened because of this loose, cracked sun roof track/frame, is that water has now been leaking into the car (possibly causing mold and condensation which has fogged up the windshield while driving) and slippery conditions all over the track/frame. This water drips through the overhead electrical panel, the headliner and down into the speakers. This can cause an electrical shortage in the vehicle, or shock. Water dripping into the car while driving on a rainy day on the freeway, can cause major distraction to the driver in dangerous conditions. The vehicle and sun roof issue have been inspected by the VW dealer, auto shop, and insurance. The VW dealer did tell me they have this issue often for these same models (they were fixing one as i was talking to them) and I have seen lawsuits online for this same issue. The car has never warned me about this issue, there are no warning lamps or messages pertaining to this. Nothing has ever severely impacted the car to cause this problem (It has never been in an accident). Please note, I have not used / opened / activated / operated this sun roof since this issue began back in December 2021. Car Insurance has offered to pay for a new headliner, but not for sun roof repair. The lifetime warranty has declined to pay for the repair because water has been involved (even though water is a secondary issue to the initial issue of a crack developing in the sun roof track/frame under normal dry warm conditions).
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-03
- VIN: 3VW2A7AUXFM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Clock spring issue in VW golf’s should re reinvestigated. These are failing on these cars and companies are not looking into fixes or warranty help for these devices that should last. It’s shortsighted for consumers to continue to deal with this issue.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
- VIN: WVWLF7AU4FW
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Volkswagen Golf. The contact noticed that the fuel pump would frequent stop while fueling the vehicle. The contact then stated that while his vehicle was being driven by a valet, fuel began to pour out of the fuel tank while on an incline. The valet attendant managed to drive the vehicle down a decline which stopped the leak. Despite the failure, the contact was able to drive the vehicle home. The vehicle was then driven to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed. The dealer informed the contact that the suction pump, seal, and emission filter needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V647000 (Fuel System, Gasoline, Engine and Engine Cooling) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed him that the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
- VIN: 3VW217AU3FM

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your golf! It sounds like you've had a great experience with it so far. The ride and handling are fantastic, and it's always fun to drive. I'm happy to hear that the lighting package has been helpful for nighttime driving, and that the Blizzak snow tires have made driving in the winter a breeze. It's great to hear that even after 60,000 miles, the golf still feels as good as new. And it's wonderful to hear that you would buy another one! Have a great day!

I've always been a fan of Volkswagen cars, and when the mk7 Golf was released, I knew I had to have it. Now that I own one, I can't help but feel amazed by how incredible it is. The 1.8 TSI engine is the star of the show, providing both phenomenal fuel economy (over 40mpg) and impressive power that can outperform many other cars on the road. Plus, the fact that it only requires 87 octane fuel is a great bonus. I absolutely adore this car! While the NAV system and touch screen response are just okay, the zooming in and out can be a bit laggy and it glitches out sometimes. However, overall, this car is perfect.

This car is perfect for us! It can easily transport four adults around town or cross country. It is smart, solid, strong, comfortable, ergonomic, efficient, reliable, and good-looking. As a diesel fan with three other diesel vehicles, I can say that there is plenty of Fahrvergnugen going on here! I love to run the county roads in central Texas, and the TDI and DSG transmission make an incredible match. The interior is quiet, and the Fender audio sounds great! Everybody loves it...

Small, safe, and reliable - but most importantly, fun!

I purchased a used car from Carvana and they delivered it to my door for free with a full tank of fuel. The car was a one-owner California car off of a 3-year lease. I have purchased new cars that were not as perfect as this one! Overall, a great experience with Carvana. AAA+++

I've been eyeing one of these cars for a year now. After owning a 2011 Tiguan, which I absolutely adored, I decided to go for the Golf. While the car looks great and the engine is impressive, I have to admit that I've been a bit disappointed. The interior is nicely done and I'm a big fan of the sunroof. The power off the line is a bit slow until the turbo spools up, but after that, it has plenty of power. The fuel economy is a bit less than I expected for the size of the car, but it's not a deal-breaker. I bought the car about 8 months ago and have driven almost 6000 miles. Unfortunately, around 4700 miles, the transmission started to shutter when shifting gears. In sports mode, it shifted much better, but had a hard downshift. I took it in for maintenance and they replaced both front axles. They told me that VW was aware of the problem and that this would solve the issue I was having. They also mentioned that most customers don't start having this problem until they have around 15,000 miles on the car. While the car shifted better for the first 600 miles after the repair, it's now doing the same thing again. It's bad enough in drive, but in sports mode, it's terrible. I'm taking it back to the shop tomorrow and hoping they'll get it fixed correctly this time. If it wasn't for this issue, I would be very happy with the car and would give it a 4+ star rating. If you're considering purchasing one, I recommend checking out some of the VW forums first. There are a lot of people experiencing the same issue as me, and VW has yet to step up and solve the problem. Many of these people are die-hard VW fans who have owned VW vehicles for years.

UPDATE....July 2017. The car has been bought back by VW as part of the Diesel emissions issue. Although my ownership experience was not great, I would like to share some observations. Some design aspects of the car seem to be driven by cost-cutting measures at VW. Let's take a look at some things, starting with the door hinges. They have shrunk dramatically compared to my 2013 Jetta hinges. Door detent stops are pretty useless and you may easily hit your door on the car next to you in a parking lot. The seats are creaking and popping from the backrest of the driver's seat, which is getting quite annoying. Oil changes look a bit more involved on the EA 288 engine due to the filter location. The dash icons have shrunk in size, so you may need reading glasses to see them. Headlights are not as powerful as on my Jetta, and high beam is pretty much useless. You need to be agile to get in and out of the car without hitting your head. The hidden door key slot is not user-friendly, and the interior light buttons are hard to find in the dark. The dash illumination reflects in the side window, and the exterior mirror demisters only operate at under 68deg F, which is not good for humid Texas mornings that start out at 80 deg F. Exterior mirrors have suffered due to fashion/aerodynamics taking over functionality, and they are too small. Performance-wise, the car is pretty good, but it does get caught out below 1800 rpm, with very noticeable turbo lag. Economy-wise, it's good so far. The Mark VII Golf has grown apart from its predecessor. I'm not sure where VW is going with these design changes apart from cost-cutting. Safety-wise, they have added as many airbags as they can, but they need to make visibility better, starting with the door mirrors. I think a lot has to do with the adoption of exhaust treatment equipment that has driven costs up and profits down. OK, lots of things have changed since the above review.Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the VW Diesel Emissions scandal. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great one. My visits to the dealership for warranty repairs and service left me feeling unimpressed. I was disappointed to hear that the car would be bought back by VW and scrapped, as I was hoping for a more environmentally friendly solution. This has been the worst buying and owning experience I've had in over 35 years and with over 40 vehicles. In January 2017, I opted for the buy back, but the process was slow and time-consuming with many forms to fill out and notarize. Unfortunately, I made an error on my form, which caused further delays. Despite these challenges, I remained patient and hopeful. However, the replacement staff at the dealership were not very helpful, and I experienced long wait times for service. I had several issues with the car, including warped front brake rotors, a noise from the driver's side front suspension, and an engine under tray that fell off after an oil change. Despite these issues, the dealership was unable to find the cause of the noise and charged me $290 to replace the under tray. Additionally, the windshield would mist over on the inside in the morning, and the driver's inside door handle and lumbar adjuster knob kept falling off. Overall, this has been a poor experience, and I wouldn't expect this from a company like VW. In January 2018, I said goodbye to the car as VW bought it back in March 2017 as part of the emissions settlement.

Because of VW's unethical business practices of lying to both consumers and regulators, the value of my car and those of others has dropped sharply. It's disappointing to see a company prioritize deception over proper engineering. I took a chance on the VW brand and have regretted it since.

I'm writing this review to share my experience with the Volkswagen TDI Golf and other TDI vehicles in the lineup. Unfortunately, recent news has revealed that Volkswagen installed a 'defeat device' algorithm on its emissions systems, which makes it appear that the vehicles emit far less nitrogen oxide during emissions testing than they do during normal driving conditions. This is a serious issue, as nitrogen oxide is a compound that is implicated in smog and worsening of pulmonary diseases such as asthma. As a consumer who was deceived by the marketing of the TDI lineup, I feel disappointed and frustrated. However, I want to emphasize that there are other great options out there, such as the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus hatches, which have been highly rated by Edmunds. I encourage you to consider these alternatives when making your next purchase.Save yourself a headache and choose a manufacturer that values honesty and transparency.

I have been a proud owner and operator of diesel Golf and Jetta vehicles since 1984. However, my recent experience with Volkswagen corporate regarding the diesel issue has been very frustrating. Despite the excellent service provided by my local dealership, the process has been drawn out, inflexible, and has resulted in wasted time, fuel, and maintenance costs. While I do not have an opinion on whether the 'clean up' of their lies was designed to be near impossible to resolve for the consumer, I believe that Volkswagen corporate should take responsibility for their actions. Nonetheless, I remain grateful for the wonderful people at my local dealership who have been just as frustrated as I have been.
