1998 Mercury Villager problems
The Mercury Villager is a minivan that was marketed by Mercury from 1993 to 2002. Taking its name used by Mercury to denote its wood-trimmed station wagons, the Villager was developed in a joint venture between Ford and Nissan; the latter manufacturer marketed the line as the Nissan Quest. The first front-wheel drive van produced by Ford, the Mercury Villager was introduced between the Ford Aerostar and the Ford Windstar, competing against Chrysler minivans and the General Motors APV minivans.
Two generations of the model line were produced, with the Villager undergoing a full redesign for 1999. In a first for the minivan segment, the model line replaced a removable rear seat with a design that was repositionable (dependent on passenger or cargo use). The Villager was the last Mercury developed with the lightbar grille used by the brand.
The Villager was produced alongside the Nissan Quest by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio) alongside the Ford Econoline/Club Wagon. After 2002, the Ford-Nissan joint venture ended, with both companies developing minivans on their own. Nissan released a new generation of the Quest, while the Villager was replaced entirely; for 2004, Mercury released a revived Monterey as its second minivan (a divisional counterpart of the Ford Freestar).

Common 1998 Mercury Villager problems
The 1998 Mercury Villager has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Fuel Tank Vent Hose Cracks: Another recall affecting the 1998 Mercury Villager involved the fuel tank vent hose, which could crack and allow fuel to leak. This issue could occur if the fuel tank is overfilled, driven only a short distance after refueling, and then subjected to significant heating.
- Steering and Structure Problems: Several complaints have been made about steering and structure problems with the 1998 Mercury Villager. These issues include problems with the power steering system, as well as issues with the body and door structures.

- Fuel System Problems: The 1st generation Villager (1993-1998) ranks 2nd in reliability out of 28 generations, but there are still 20 complaints mostly about fuel system problems.
- Engine Issues: Owners have made 36 complaints over 10 model years, mostly about engine issues with the Villager.
- Loss of Power: Some owners have reported issues with loss of power in their 1998 Mercury Villager.
- Heater and A/C Problems: Complaints have been made about the heater and A/C systems in the 1998 Mercury Villager, including issues with the heater blowing cold air when the car is idling and the A/C blowing hot air.
- Electrical Issues: Electrical issues have also been reported with the 1998 Mercury Villager, including problems with the fuel pump losing pressure when the engine is off and the need to wait 15-25 minutes to restart the engine after it stalls on hot days.
It is important to note that not all 1998 Mercury Villagers will experience these problems, and some may not experience any issues at all. However, these complaints are common enough to be worth noting for potential buyers or current owners of the vehicle.

- VIN: 4M2ZV1117WD
- Components: VISIBILITY,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE VEHICLE AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS AUTOMATICALLY LOCK THE DOORS THIS HAS HAPPENED INNUMERABLE OCCASIONS. THIS BEGAN SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE IN 1998, AND CONTINUES TODAY. THE DOORS AR NOT TO LOCK IF THE KEYS ARE IN THE IGNITION, AND THEY DO. THIS HAS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, WHILE IT IS PARKED, WHEN ENTERING, AND EXITING THE VEHICLE. THE INTERIOR DOORS DO NOT OVERRIDE THE LOCKS, AND IN AN EMERGENCY, ONE WOULD BE UNABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE IF THEY WERE TO LOCK. USUALLY THIS OCCURS MOST OFTEN WHEN THE DOORS ARE BEING CLOSED; AND IF THE BATTERY IS UNHOOKED, AND RECONNECTED, IT MAY REMEDY THE SITUATION FOR SEVERAL DAYS. THE REAR AUTOMATIC WINDOWS GO OUT WHEN YOU PRESS THE BUTTONS TO MAKE THEM GO IN, AND THE REAR WIPER STAYS DOWN AS IF THE WINDOW IS UNLOCKED. THAT CAN BE REMEDIED BY UNLOCKING THE WINDOW, AND RELATCHING IT, IT USUALLY STAYS UP FOR 2-3 DAYS. WHEN YOU ATTEMPT TO RETRACT THE REAR WINDOWS, THEY WILL NOT GO IN AUTOMATICALLY. I HAVE CONTACTED PUTNAM LINCOLN MERCURY IN FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS, AND I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO COMPLETE THESE REPAIRS WHICH COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH IF THE DOORS LOCKED SOMEONE IN. IN OTHER NEWS, THE GAS PEDAL IS STICKING ALSO, THIS HAPPENS WHEN YOU TAKE OFF IN THE VEHICLE, AND HAPPENS EVERY TIME. THIS HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED TO THE DEALERSHIP. *NM

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing vehicle. I purchased it used two years ago and I have to say, it has been an absolute pleasure to own. I have had no problems whatsoever and it still looks as good as new! The minivan boasts a beautiful gray leather interior, all-electric control, a 5CD player, and a sun/moon roof. I even had new tires added at 50K miles and it still runs like a dream. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in the market for a reliable and stylish ride!
-
The engine and powertrain are very smooth, although they may seem a bit underpowered, likely for the sake of gas mileage, which is about 25 MPG. I had a problem with the fuel tank until the recall came through, but overall, I really like the way the seats can be removed and relocated.
-
You have a great van! Over the course of 8 years, it has only gained 120,000 miles and has proven to be very reliable with no engine or transmission issues. Although there was a minor electrical problem with the rear heat, you were able to fix it yourself by using a jumper. The van has a solid ride and gets good mileage, about 25 mpg on the highway on a good day with good gas. It's no wonder you bought another Mercury 2002 Villager and don't want to sell the 1997 Villager since it's such a good van. With a hitch, you may even use it for pulling your boat and camper. The engine pulls very well for a 3.0 L. It's a shame they discontinued this van after 2002. You're not sure what you'll do when your 2002 is ready to go, but for now, you're enjoying your trusty 1997 Villager.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it back in June of 2005 when it had only 78,000 miles on it. Now, in January of 2007, we've put 97,000 miles on it. Overall, I'm really happy with our purchase. The only issues we've had are with the auto locks (which unfortunately no longer work properly) and the battery cable, which we had to replace. But all in all, I think we made a smart decision in buying this car.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my minivan. I bought it brand new back in 1998 (which was the last year of that model), and I've been so happy with it! Over the years, I've taken good care of it by changing the oil, tires, brake pads, and gasoline filter, and it's never given me any trouble. In my opinion, it's the best minivan for the money. I have several friends who have had Chryslers or Dodges, and they've had all sorts of problems. On the other hand, my neighbour has a Villager with 125K miles on it, and they've never had a single issue either. Thanks for listening!

I purchased the Villager second-hand with 86k miles and experienced no issues initially. However, around 90k miles, the transmission began to shift roughly. Although I had it repaired, the problem resurfaced.
Ari Legros 2024-10-13
My 97 Villager has had some issues, but I have taken care of them promptly. Despite being a low mileage kid transporter, with an average of less than 10K miles per year, I have had to replace the engine mount bolts at 50K miles, which cost me $550. Additionally, during the last wheel alignment, shims were required to get the alignment into spec. Some of the internal trim elements did not survive the first couple of years, and the steering wheel mounted radio controls have rarely worked. The electronic locks have also had some issues in hot weather, but I have been able to address them. Overall, I have been confident in my ability to maintain and improve the performance of my vehicle.
Nikolas Ullrich 2024-10-03
The leather seats are very comfortable and the ride is great. The van also has exceptional gas mileage at 22.5mpg. However, the rear hatch is too low and can hit your head. Additionally, my van has wet carpet and an issue with the a/c compressor constantly clicking and draining the motor, although it still blows cold. Overall, it seems much more reliable than the Caravans I've had in the past.
Macey Kertzmann 2024-05-11
While not as large as some of its competitors, the Villager is a great choice for those who value fun driving and reliability. Even with 157,000 miles, it still drives like new with no squeaks or groans. It's as reliable as death and taxes! I wish they still made this van, as I would definitely buy another one just like it if/when this one ever fails.
Seth Sauer 2024-01-18
We purchased the van due to its stylish design, affordable price, and additional features compared to the Caravan series. We were fortunate to find a used one with only 18,000 miles and just 2 years old. The engine and transmission have been extremely reliable. Although some of the interior parts are not as well-built, it has served us well for the past 4 years. As a Nissan, it has held up to the wear and tear of our family with three kids. We have no regrets and highly recommend it!
