2006 Cadillac Sts problems
The Cadillac STS (Seville Touring Sedan) is a mid-sized luxury 4-door sedan manufactured and marketed by General Motors from 2004 to 2011 for the 2005 to 2011 model years. A version of the STS was marketed in China as the SLS through 2013.
It was equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission with performance algorithm shifting and driver shift control.
Origins
The STS was the successor to the Cadillac Seville, which beginning in 1987 was available as an upscale performance-oriented STS (for Seville Touring Sedan) version.
While smaller than the full-size DTS, the more expensive STS was the flagship sedan of the Cadillac brand.

Common 2006 Cadillac Sts problems
The Cadillac STS 2006 is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues range from minor inconveniences to more significant mechanical problems. Here are the top five issues based on complaints from owners of this car:
- MAP Sensor Failure: The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor can fail in the Cadillac STS 2006, causing a check engine light for a MAP sensor code. The MAP sensor is located on the intake manifold on the V6 and V8 engines. To fix MAP sensor failure, remove the sensor by disconnecting the electric connector, removing the bolt, and removing the sensor. Reverse this procedure to reinstall a new one.
- Passenger Presence Sensor Failure: The passenger presence sensor can fail in the Cadillac STS 2006, causing the airbag light to come on with a code for the passenger presence system. The passenger presence sensor is located in the passenger seat and senses if there is a passenger on the seat for the airbag system. To fix this issue, replace the sensor.
- Steering Wheel Position Sensor Failure: The steering wheel position sensor can fail in the Cadillac STS 2006, causing the service stability light to come on on the dash, the ABS light to come on, or the ABS light to activate for no reason while driving. The steering wheel position sensor is located at the base of the steering column and senses the steering wheel's position. To fix this issue, replace the steering wheel position sensor by disabling the airbag system, removing the lower dash panels, removing the intermediate shaft, and sliding the sensor out.
In summary, the Cadillac STS 2006 has several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include EVAP codes for a bad gas cap, camshaft actuator solenoid valve failure, MAP sensor failure, passenger presence sensor failure, and steering wheel position sensor failure. While these issues can be frustrating, they are relatively common in vehicles of this age and can often be fixed with routine maintenance and repairs.

THE END RESULT WAS THAT THEY SAID IT'S NOT UNDER WARRANTY. I WOULD JUST LIKE YOU TO INVESTIGATE TO SEE IF THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT CADILLAC SHOULD ADDRESS. *JS

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-05-18
- VIN: 1G6DC67A860
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON THURSDAY 18 MAY 2017, WHILE DRIVING NORTH ON INTERSTATE 405 IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT NORMAL SPEEDS, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO MISS OUT; AND THE BRAKES LOST POWER ASSIST. THE PROBLEMS PERSISTED AND WORSENED, SO I EXITED THE FREEWAY TO SURFACE STREETS AND BEGAN THE TRIP BACK SOUTH ON INTERSTATE 405 TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR. WHEN STOPPED ON SURFACE STREETS (AND ON THE FREEWAY), IT WAS NECESSARY TO SHIFT TO NEUTRAL AND ADD FUEL TO THE ENGINE TO KEEP IT RUNNING. ALSO, IT WAS NECESSARY TO APPLY EXTRA STRONG PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF POWER ASSIST. AFTER ARRIVING AT THE DEALER AND SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE, THE MECHANIC COULD NOT GET THE ENGINE TO RESTART. AFTER EXTENSIVE EXPOSURE OF ENGINE INTERNAL PARTS, DEALER DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT A ROCKER ARM HAD BROKEN AT ONE OF THE CYLINDERS, RESULTING IN DEBRIS FALLING THROUGH THE VALVE OPENING INTO THE CYLINDER AND SCORING THE VALVE SEAT AND THE PISTON. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE ENGINE. -- AT THAT TIME, THE VEHICLE HAD ACCUMULATED 83,000 MILES OF MODERATE DRIVING, AND WAS ONLY A LITTLE OVER 11 YEARS OLD. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW FROM THE DEALER IN DECEMBER 2005, AND HAD BEEN MAINTAINED EXCLUSIVELY BY THAT DEALER SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. SUBSEQUENTLY, A NEW (REMANUFACTURED) ENGINE WAS PURCHASED FROM AND INSTALLED BY THE DEALER AT A COST OF $12,678.25. THE VEHICLE WAS WITH THE DEALER FOR A TOTAL OF SIX WEEKS TO COMPLETE THE REPAIR AND INSTALLATION. -- CLEARLY, HAD THE ENGINE COMPLETELY FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, INTENSIVE ACTION WOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED TO SAFELY EXIT THE FREEWAY AND TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP (ESPECIALLY BECAUSE OF LOSS OF POWER ASSIST ON THE BRAKES). THIS WOULD HAVE PLACED MY PASSENGERS IN VERY HIGH DANGER AND PERSONAL RISK.
ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-26
- VIN: 1G6DW677560
- Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
- Summary: WHEN MAKING RIGHT HAND TURNS, THE CAR STALLS TEMPORARILY NOT ALLOWING ME TO ACCELERATE OR ACCLIMATE TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING, THE TRACTION ACTIVE SYMBOL IS DISPLAYED ON THE DASHBOARD. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS IT SEEMS TO ALL WORK AGAIN, HOWEVER IT SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS OTHER CARS ARE EITHER ASSUMING I WILL BE AT THEIR SPEED, OR ASSUME I AM ALLOWING THEM TO GO WHEN IN FACT I AM STUCK. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN IN THE CAR AND I AM BECOMING SCARED THAT THIS MAY CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-11-15
- VIN: 1G6DW677760
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: PASSENGER SEAT OCCUPANT SENSOR STOPS WORKING, DISABLING THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. 2006 CADILLAC CTS WERE RECALLED BUT THE CADILLAC STS USES THE SAME SYSTEM BUT WAS NOT RECALLED. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME UP WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS AND ITS GIVING THE ERROR CODE ASSOCIATED WITH THE OCCUPANT SENSOR MAT SYSTEM
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-11-30
- VIN: 1G6DW677960
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: FRONT PASSENGER DOOR DOES NOT ALWAYS OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE WHILE STATIONARY, AND/OR IN PARK, OR WHETHER THE ENGINE IS RUNNING OR OFF. IF THIS CAR IS EVER IN AN ACCIDENT, EMERGENCY WORKERS WOULD HAVE TO TAKE EXTRA STEPS, AND VALUABLE TIME, TO TRY TO SUCCESSFULLY EXTRACT ANY VICTIM FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. I SEE IT HAS BEEN REPORTED BEFORE!
2006 Cadillac Sts recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2006 Cadillac Sts.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2004-2007 Cadillac CTS-V vehicles manufactured October 6, 2003, to March 15, 2007, and 2006-2007 Cadillac STS-V vehicles manufactured June 23, 2005, to March 15, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the electrical terminals of the fuel pump module may overheat resulting in the melting of the flange material.
- Consequence: If the flange melts, a hole may be created allowing the fuel pump to leak fuel, causing the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, leaking fuel in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel module and fuel tank jumper harness, free of charge. GM sent out interim notices in late October. The recall began on March 12, 2015. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14405.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT:SEAL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE REAR AXLE PINION SEAL DOES NOT MEET ALL OF THE SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXPERIENCE A FLUID LEAK.
- Consequence: A REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILURE MAY CAUSE LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER AND POSSIBLY LOSS OF CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PINION SEAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 1, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-800-458-8006 OR HTTP://WWW.CADILLAC.COM; PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR HTTP://WWW.PONTIAC.COM; AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876 OR HTTP://WWW.SATURN.COM.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY
- Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH V6 ENGINES MAY HAVE A CONDITION WHERE FUEL IS NO LONGER SUPPLIED TO THE ENGINE. THIS CONDITION OCCURS WITHOUT THE ILLUMINATION OF THE FUEL LEVEL LOW INDICATOR LIGHT OR THE WARNING CHIME.
- Consequence: IF THE ENGINE STOPS RUNNING, THE OPERATOR WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE (ECM) WITH NEW SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WERE NOTIFIED IN DECEMBER 2005 AND ASKED TO MAINTAIN AT LEAST 1/4 OF A TANK FUEL LEVEL TO AVOID THIS CONDITION UNTIL THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. THE PARTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE, OWNER RENOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ALL WHEEL DRIVE AND A 3.6L V6 ENGINE, THE TORQUE MONITORING FUNCTIONS OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL (ETC) ARE NOT ENABLED. THESE FUNCTIONS CAN LIMIT ENGINE SPEED AND TORQUE IF UNUSUAL ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE FAILURES OCCUR.
- Consequence: WITHOUT THESE FUNCTIONS ENABLED, A PERSISTENT ECM FAILURE COULD RESULT IN A THROTTLE OPENING GREATER THAN COMMANDED BY THE DRIVER AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE ECM ON THESE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 24, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339.

I traded in my 2003 CTS for my current 2006 STS, and I absolutely love it! There is no comparison between the two cars. It is the best car I've ever owned. I'm always learning something new about the STS. I don't know how they can make this car any better. I highly recommend taking a test drive in the new STS, you'll definitely fall in love with it.
-
The first two weeks with the STS have been fantastic! As someone who has driven imports for many years, I was a bit hesitant to take a chance on this car. However, I am happy to report that I am absolutely loving it! The car is packed with features that put luxury imports to shame, all at a great price point. I have the V6 AWD and I am eagerly anticipating the winter snow. The car is incredibly quiet and has proven to be rock solid so far. It's almost unbelievable how many features have been packed into this car. I must admit, I had to read the owner's manual more than once to get a handle on all of the technology features and how to use everything, but it was well worth it!
-
This STS all wheel drive is the most enjoyable car to drive, surpassing my previous five Cadillac DeVilles and one DTS. Its handling and cornering are unparalleled, providing an incredible sense of control. The car is incredibly quiet, to the point where I have to open the window to check if the engine is running. The stereo system is simply amazing. Although it feels strange not using a key, I am confident that I will get used to it. While the glove box is too small to fit the owner's manual and the trunk space is limited and difficult to access, these minor issues do not detract from the overall experience. The voice activation function could use some improvement, as it struggles to understand perfect English. For example, when I say 'windows down', it responds with 'pardon, defrost on?'.
-
We really appreciate this car. It offers a smooth and quiet ride, handles great, and the Bose stereo is a must-have! The V6 provides more than enough power.
-
We got this car for my very capable elderly mother to drive back and forth to church and the store. I'm so glad to hear that she loves it and was able to learn the car easily. It's great to know that she truly enjoys the luxury ride!

I was hoping for a fun and practical car when I purchased the STS 4, all wheel drive. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car and have had to make several trips to the dealer. Despite this, the issues have not been fully resolved yet. I have had some ongoing problems with the all wheel drive, leaks, seals, and excessive wind noise. The acceleration/transmission and HVAC system have also been problematic. Additionally, the car's electronics can be quite complex to navigate. The interior is a bit small and there is limited back seat space. Overall, I am not completely satisfied with my purchase.
Bernhard Hansen 2024-11-06
If you're searching for a soft, luxurious ride like a Cadillac, the STS may not be the best fit for you. The bucket seats are quite stiff, similar to a Mercedes. However, I recently switched from a 2004 Jaguar S-Type with the Sport Package to a 2006 STS V6 with the Performance Luxury Package, and I must say, I love the STS and all its technology. The STS feels more spacious and luxurious, has a great ride, is quiet, and has no road vibration. Unfortunately, the seats are too firm, which can ruin the ride experience. The lumbar support is also too hard and doesn't fit a 6'2
Manuel Leuschke 2024-10-04
I have had 4 major failures with my car since purchasing it in July 06. These include two occurrences of front end rack and pinion failure, wheel bearings in both front and back, and a park gear sensor in the transmission that had to be replaced as the computer did not recognize that the car was in park. Unfortunately, I am afraid that the third issue has caused a problem with the transmission as the car does not have any 'impulse' power when put in drive. Overall, my experience with this car has been very disappointing. I would not recommend purchasing it and I certainly will not make this mistake again. In my opinion, BMW and Lexus offer much better value for the money, as I have owned both. I tried to go with an American car maker this time around, but I am extremely disappointed. Good luck.

I recently acquired a 2006 Cadillac STS V8. Although I find its styling appealing, I must admit that the rear seat comfort is quite tight. Additionally, the quality of the vehicle did not meet my expectations. The instructions for the electronics were confusing, even for dealer personnel due to the use of different systems in different models. While the keyless start feature is satisfactory, it could be improved. On a positive note, the stereo is fantastic!
Loyal Pagac 2024-04-01
The new STS is a well-built alternative to the offshore crowd. It is a quiet car with enough power to give it that 'fun' factor. Overall, I am satisfied with the vehicle. However, there are some shortcomings with the car that Cadillac should have addressed. The storage inside the car is limited, with a small glove box and tiny center console. Additionally, there is no back seat storage to speak of. The electronics are also a concern, with voice recognition not working as expected and Bluetooth phone usage restricted while driving. Changing the destination on the Nav also requires the car to be stopped. These design flaws are unfortunate, but they do not detract from the overall quality of the vehicle.
