ALMOST HAD 4 CRASHES. SOMETHING IN THE REAR IS MAKING THE CAR SWERVE LIKE ITS LOSING TRACTION BUT ONLY WHEN IT'S RELEASED OFF THE GAS PEDAL. THE CONTACT REPLACED BOTH REAR SHOCKS AND SPRINGS BUT THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. INSUFFICIENT PROTECTION OF FRAME FROM ABNORMAL AND PREMATURE CORROSION AND ROT; RESULTANT CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF FRAME WHILE HITTING A POTHOLE AT 10 MILES PER HOUR. FRAME IS BROKEN ABOVE LEFT FRONT AXLE; TEAR IS APPROXIMATELY 2 FEET LONG AND 2 INCHES WIDE. FRAME AREAS AROUND TEAR AND THROUGHOUT WHEEL AND AXLE COMPARTMENT ARE EASILY POKED THROUGH BY USING A FINGER. MECHANIC AND BODY SHOP MANAGER ADVISE THAT VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO OPERATE. REPAIR COSTS FOR REPLACEMENT OF FRONT APRON OF FRAME ESTIMATED AT $3,000-$4,000. NISSAN BODY SHOP REPORTS THAT ABNORMAL AND PREMATURE CORROSION AND ROT OF FRAME ARE TYPICAL OF INFINITI QX4 AND NISSAN PATHFINDERS PRE-2003. SUBSEQUENT RESEARCH FINDS CONSUMER COMPLAINTS RELATED TO MODEL YEARS ASSOCIATED WITH FUEL LINE RECALL.   • Summary: ON 7 SEPERATE OCCASIONS OVER THE PAST YEAR THE CAR HAS ACCELLERATED SUDDENLY WHILE DRIVER WAS ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE. THE THROTTLING EFFECT HAS OCCURRED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS BETWEEN 5 AND 50 MPH, BUT ALWAYS WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE. THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED SINCE THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP. ON ONE OCCASION I HAVE APPLIED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AT FULL FORCE AND THE VEHICLE STILL ACCELLERATED AND WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN UNTIL I KNOCKED IT INTO NEUTRAL. I HAVE HAD 3 DIFFERENT PEOPLE IN THE CAR WHEN THE INCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED. THE CAR HAS BEEN CHECKED BY DEALER TWICE AND I INSISTED THAT THE SERVICE MANAGER DRIVE THE CAR FOR A WEEK, BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM AND ACCUSED ME OF DRIVER ERROR. I BELIEVE VERY STRONGLY THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE WILL CAUSE DEATHS SOONER OR LATER AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. I WILL NOT DRIVE THE CAR IN ANY CITY AREA FOR FEAR I WILL RUN SOMEONE DOWN IN A CROSSWALK. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

ADDITIONALLY, AFTER DEALER ROTATED AND BALANCED WHEELS/TIRES, VEHICLE NOW HAS DISTINCT SHIMMY, BRAKE PROBLEMS, AND RAPPING IN STEERING SHAFT. AN INDEPENDENT CHECK REVEALED AND REPAIRED WHEEL BALANCE AS INCORRECT WEIGHTS WERE ADDED. HOWEVER, INDEPENDENT DEALER THEORIZES THAT BRAKE ROTORS MAY HAVE BEEN WARPED BY CENTRAL INFINITI. ADDITIONALLY, THERE APPEARS TO BE EXCESSIVE WEAR IN BOTH THE SUSPENSION AND STEERING SYSTEM.

  • Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

However, I did experience some issues with the rotors, which needed to be repaired twice in the past two years. Additionally, the air conditioning and struts needed to be replaced, which was quite costly. While I had some challenges with this car, I still appreciate the memories I made with it. If you're considering purchasing one, it's important to weigh the pros and cons and do your research. Japanese engineering has its strengths and weaknesses, so it's important to make an informed decision.

    I purchased this car last year with only 45k miles on it. It has been a reliable vehicle, although it does lack power. However, the suspension has been a bit of a disappointment. My little Frontier actually rides smoother than the QX4, which is supposed to be a luxury SUV. Unfortunately, any slight bump in the road causes the suspension to bottom out, which can be embarrassing when driving with friends. It's worth noting that the shocks were replaced, but it didn't make any difference. Additionally, it's difficult to find anything other than OEM shocks, so you can't even upgrade to stiffer shocks if you wanted to. All things considered, I have decided that this will be my last QX4.

    The QX4 is definitely a step up from the N. Pathfinder, with a superb interior and body molding. However, it's worth noting that the gas mileage is not great and the steering can be stiff. Additionally, maintenance can be expensive, and I had to get the emissions corrected twice and replace both front struts while I owned the vehicle. If you're looking for a car that can handle steep hills at a slower pace, this might be the car for you. Overall, while I enjoyed owning the QX4, if I had to do it over again, I might consider a Denali or a used Jag XJ6 instead.
