2005 Pontiac Montana problems
The Pontiac Montana is a minivan that was sold by General Motors under the Pontiac brand for model years 1997 to 2009. Its badge-engineered variants were the Chevrolet Venture and the Oldsmobile Silhouette in the first generation, and the Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, and Buick Terraza in the second generation. Prior to the 1997 model year, it was known as the Pontiac Trans Sport.
In 1996 for the 1997 model year, the Trans Sport added the Montana moniker as part of an available trim package. This package proved so popular the line was renamed Montana in 1998 for the 1999 model year in the United States and 1999 for the 2000 model year in Canada. When the van was redesigned in 2004 for the 2005 model year, the name was changed to Montana SV6. It was discontinued after the 2006 model year in the United States because of slow sales, but continued to be sold in Canada and Mexico until 2009. Since their introduction, the Pontiac minivans were GM's most popular minivans among consumers in Canada.
The Doraville, Georgia assembly plant which produced the Montana and its siblings closed on September 26, 2008. Sales of the Montana SV6 continued for Canada and Mexico until 2009, a year before the Pontiac brand was discontinued in 2010.

Common 2005 Pontiac Montana problems
The Pontiac Montana, produced between 1999 and 2009, is known to have several common problems, particularly in the 2001, 2002, and 2005 model years.
Another common problem with the 1999 to 2006 Pontiac Montana models is erratic shifting, which is caused by a faulty pressure control solenoid.
In addition, some 2005 Pontiac Montana owners have reported issues with the air-conditioning system, caused by leaking refrigerant in the minivan's cooling system. This problem can lead to the air-conditioning system not working at all.
The 2005 Pontiac Montana has also been known to experience power loss when overheating, which could be due to the engine going into limp-home mode to prevent further damage.
Lastly, the 2005 Pontiac Montana SV6 has been reported to have issues with the power sliding doors, which may not stay closed or may intermittently sound the bell, even when the doors are closed. Dealers have been unable to solve this issue, leaving owners to seek alternative solutions.
In summary, the Pontiac Montana has several common problems, including intake manifold gasket failure, erratic shifting, air-conditioning issues, power loss during overheating, and power sliding door malfunctions. These issues can be costly to repair and may require professional assistance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-12-14
- VIN: 1GMDX33L75D
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
- Summary: SINCE PURCHASING NEARLY 2 YRS AGO FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP, IT HAS HAD NUMEROUS MINOR ISSUES AND SOME DANGEROUS PROBLEMS AS WELL. MY MAIN CONCERN IS THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE AUTOMATIC SLIDING DOOR DOESN'T FUNCTION PROPERLY. WE HAD THE VAN LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND HE WAS UNABLE TO REMEDY THE PROBLEMS WITH THE DOOR. THE SLIDER DOOR OPENS RANDOMLY, WON'T SHUT, OR JUST KEEPS OPENING AND SHUTTING FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON. WE'VE TRIED TURNING THE SWITCH OFF ON THE CONSOLE, WHICH FOR THE MOST PART KEEPS THE DOOR SHUT~ BUT THEN THAT DOOR IS UNUSABLE. NOW FOR THE MOST SERIOUS OF MY CONCERNS WITH THE CONSOLE SWITCH OFF, THE DOOR HAS ON OCCASION OPENED ON ITS OWN WHEN THE VAN IS GOING DOWN THE ROAD. ALSO, AT LEAST 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS, THE DOOR HAS OPENED ON ITS OWN IN THE NIGHT AND STAYED OPEN~ CAUSING MY BATTERY TO BE DEAD IN THE MORNING. ANOTHER PROBLEM WE HAVE HAS IS THE ABS AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS COME ON RANDOMLY, WE HAD THE VAN SERVICED AND STILL IT DOESN'T SEEM LIKE THOSE SYSTEMS ARE WORKING PROPERLY. *TR

WHILE THE POPULATION OF VEHICLES IS SMALL, THE HANDICAPPED PEOPLE IN THEM ARE MOST VULNERABLE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE IF THE WHEELCHAIR RAMP WILL NOT GO DOWN OR THERE'S A FIRE IN THE AREA OF THE RAMP. THE CONTACT WANTED TO FILE THE COMPLAINT THAT HE SENT VIA EMAIL. THE CURRENT MILES WERE 65,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. BL

- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
- Summary: CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH CLOTH SEATS THAT WERE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC AIR BAG PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM AND LATER REUPHOLSTERED WITH AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVER KITS ARE INVOLVED. TESTING HAS INDICATED THAT THE AFTERMARKET LEATHER SEAT COVERS CAN CAUSE THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM TO MALFUNCTION.
- Consequence: IF THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS, THE FRONT AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE MAY BE DISABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE ENABLED, OR ENABLED WHEN IT SHOULD BE DISABLED. IN EITHER CASE, IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT REQUIRES AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A FRONT PASSENGER'S LEVEL OF INJURY MAY BE INCREASED.
- Remedy: BECAUSE A REPLACEMENT LEATHER SEAT COVER THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE PASSENGER SENSING SYSTEM IS NOT AVAILABLE, GENERAL MOTORS (GM) WILL REPURCHASE THESE VEHICLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS STATED IN GM'S LETTER TO OWNERS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 6, 2006. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT GM AT 1-877-477-1022 TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REPURCHASING THEIR VEHICLE.

TO MEET THE STANDARD, THE VEHICLE MUST NOT MOVE FOR FIVE MINUTES WHEN STOPPED ON A STEEP HILL WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED AND THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL (N). SOME OF THESE VEHICLES FAILED THIS TEST.
- Consequence: WHEN THE PARKING BRAKE IS RELEASED, THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE UNINTENDED BRAKING WHEN ACCELERATING, DECELERATING, OR COASTING, AND A NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. UNINTENDED VEHICLE MOVEMENT COULD OCCUR INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR PARKING BRAKE LEVER SLIPPAGE AT EACH REAR BRAKE CALIPER AND REPLACE THE CALIPER IF LEVER SLIPPAGE IS IDENTIFIED. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 14, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, OR SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEATS:MID/REAR ASSEMBLY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, THE OUTBOARD RELEASE HANDLE ON THE IMPACT-SIDE SECOND-ROW BUCKET SEAT MAY BE ACTUATED AND THE REAR LATCHES MAY UNLATCH EARLY IN A SIDE IMPACT CRASH. THIS WAS DISCOVERED IN A SIDE IMPACT TEST RUN BY GM, UNDER CONDITIONS SIMILAR TO NHTSA'S NEW CAR ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (NCAP) SIDE IMPACT TEST.
- Consequence: IF THE REAR LATCHES OF THE SEAT RELEASE EARLY IN A SEVERE SIDE IMPACT, THE FRONT OUTBOARD LATCH MAY DISENGAGE AND INCREASE THE POTENTIAL FOR INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT OF THE SEAT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE SEAT LATCH RELEASE HANDLE AND INSTALL A BLACK PLASTIC CAP OVER THE EXPOSED METAL STUD TO ELIMINATE THE SIDE IMPACT SAFETY CONCERN FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 5, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, AND PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

- Summary: ON CERTAIN MINIVANS EQUIPPED WITH SECOND-ROW BUCKET SEATS OR CAPTAIN'S CHAIRS AND A POWER SLIDING DOOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, A PASSENGER USING THE INTERIOR HANDLE TO OPEN THE POWER SLIDING DOOR COULD BE INJURED.
- Consequence: IF A PASSENGER USES THE INTERIOR HANDLE TO OPEN THE POWER SLIDING DOOR AND HOLDS ONTO THE HANDLE WHILE IT IS BEING OPENED BY THE MOTOR, THE PASSENGER'S ARM MAY BE PUSHED INTO THE SEAT BACK OR ARMREST AND A WRIST OR LOWER ARM INJURY MAY RESULT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POWER SLIDING DOOR INTERIOR HANDLE ON THE PASSENGER-SIDE. IF THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A POWER OR MANUAL SLIDING DOOR ON THE DRIVER-SIDE, THE INTERIOR HANDLE WILL ALSO BE REPLACED FOR APPEARANCE REASONS. NOTE: BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS SERVICED, GM ADVISES OWNERS TO NOT USE THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE TO OPEN THE DOOR. THE DRIVER CAN OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR FROM SWITCHES AT THE DRIVER'S POSITION OR BY USING THE REMOTE KEY FOB. THE DRIVER SHOULD TELL PASSENGERS TO USE THE SWITCH LOCATED IN FRONT OF THE DOOR TO OPEN OR CLOSE IT. Room and utility. I have been driving vans for many years and I must say, this is by far the best van on the market today. Keep up the great work, Pontiac!

We recently traded in our Aztec for a Montana SV6 with a nicely equipped 1SB package. The standard OnStar feature not only adds value, but also helped lower my auto insurance premium as it is considered an anti-theft device. The optional rear parking assist, power sliding doors, and standard DVD player have made our 18-month-old happy and content. Although some may find the 200 horsepower lacking, I find it to be more than enough after driving the 185 hp Aztec for three years. While I do miss the heads-up display and fog lights from the Aztec, I am overall very happy with our purchase. Additionally, the body styling of the new Montana is much more appealing than the old one.

It seems like more sound dampening material could have been used, and power seats would be a great addition as a standard feature.

I had a 99 Montana and I absolutely loved it! However, when the lease was up, I made the mistake of trading it for a Rendezvous. Unfortunately, it was a long 3 years with that car. Thankfully, I've had my 2005 SV6 since March 1st and it's been wonderful. It rides better, handles better, and has fewer blind spots than the Buick. I'm so glad I came back to Pontiac!

You've got yourself a very nice vehicle there! It's got a DVD player for the kids and plenty of room, which is always a plus. Not to mention, it has decent fuel economy and a great ride. The only downside is that the glove box is a little cheap, but other than that, it sounds like you made a great buy!

It's been a year since we got this van and we're still really happy with it. The leather has held up well, the DVD player is more popular than ever, and the AC blows like a January blizzard. However, we did experience a few minor issues in the past year, such as a powered door that stopped working, brake trouble (not serious), a loose trim piece covering the sliding doors' track, and a radio that switches stations without warning (only on one certain frequency... huh?). Thankfully, all of these were fixed quickly and cheerfully under warranty. While we're still satisfied with the van overall, we do wonder if these issues should have happened in the first place.

We have been loyal GM customers for 20 years, but we have recently experienced some issues with our vehicle. The automatic sliding doors have been opening while driving and won't latch, which is a serious safety concern. Despite our frustration, we have been working with the dealer and GM to resolve the issue. However, we have found that the fabric inside the car stains easily, despite multiple coats of Scotch-Guard. Additionally, we have noticed that the cruise control can cause the RPM's to red-line, which can be concerning. We hope that GM will take our concerns seriously and work with us to find a solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This vehicle has had some issues since the second day of purchase, and unfortunately, we have had to service it 14 times in the first year alone. The handling and acceleration have been poor, and we have experienced problems with the alignment and tires. Despite our efforts to trade it in for a better quality minivan, we have faced challenges due to its condition. However, we remain confident in our ability to find a solution to this situation.

Although we initially loved the van, we have experienced several issues since purchasing it. Specifically, the transmission has been slipping when shifting from park to drive or when accelerating from a stop. Additionally, nearly all of the decals on the rear hatch have fallen off, and the battery has failed. Despite these setbacks, we are confident that we can address these issues and get the van back to its optimal condition. We are currently working to catch up on payments so that we can either sell or trade in the vehicle for a newer model.

I recently purchased the new SV6 due to my expanding family. After looking at several options, I found that none of them, except for Ford/Mercury, offered the expanded features at a reasonable price. Although I appreciate the appearance and creature comforts of the SV6, and the driving experience is typical of a minivan, there are a few areas of concern. Unfortunately, my vehicle has been in the shop four times over the first three months for various reasons, including a faulty aligned door, replacement of a rear sliding door motor, replacement of a door handle, replacement of body molding, steering wheel casing replacement, windshield stripping replacement, and a dead battery. Additionally, the highway noise (wind) on this vehicle is quite noticeable. I would recommend paying extra for better quality.
