1998 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The Chevrolet Cavalier is a line of compact cars produced by Chevrolet. Serving as the replacement of the Chevrolet Monza, the Cavalier was the second Chevrolet model line to adopt front-wheel drive. Three versions of the Cavalier have been sold, including three generations sold in North America from model years 1982 to 2005, a version produced by SAIC-GM for China from 2016 to 2021, and a SAIC-GM version produced for Mexico since the 2019 model year.
The Cavalier was among the inaugural vehicles of the GM J platform. One of the first "world cars" of General Motors, the J platform was developed for use by each North American GM division (with the exception of GMC), alongside international models for Opel, Vauxhall, and Holden. Though sharing chassis underpinnings, J-body cars from Europe and Australia used slightly different body designs and different powertrains; in Europe, the Vauxhall Cavalier and Opel Ascona were marketed as mid-size cars. Initially a divisional counterpart of the Buick Skyhawk, Cadillac Cimarron, Oldsmobile Firenza, and Pontiac J2000, the Cavalier was primarily marketed alongside the Pontiac Sunbird (renamed the Pontiac Sunfire for 1995).
The 1982-2005 Cavalier was produced by multiple GM facilities across North America. For 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt replaced the model line in North America.

Common 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier problems
The 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier is known for several common problems, primarily related to its engine, suspension, and electrical systems.
One of the most prevalent issues is with the car's engine, including the pulleys flying off, the alternator, starter, coil, and random sensors quitting working, and the check engine light staying on until the motor's serial number is added at the dealership.
The suspension system is another area where the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier has several common problems. These include ball joints, tie rod ends, and axles wearing out, leading to a gas tank leak and other front tire issues.
The electrical system is another area where the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier has several common problems. These include the ABS light coming on, starting problems, fuses blowing once a week, and the parking lights not working.
In summary, the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier has several common problems related to its engine, suspension, and electrical systems. Regular maintenance, including battery cable replacement, fluid and filter changes, and injector cleaning, can help prevent some of these issues. However, some problems, such as the ABS light coming on and the anti-theft system engaging permanently, may require professional repair.
How many miles will a Cavalier last?
There are reports of 2003 Cavaliers topping 300,000 miles with the original powertrain and engine. One mechanic at Car Gurus even claims to have worked on an engine with 440,000 miles on it. But, as you can't vouch for the previous owner's maintenance habits, expect a lifespan of around 250,000 miles.
Why did Chevy stop making Cavaliers?
Contrary to the American markets, however, the cavalier remained on sale in other regions like Mexico for example. Stopping the Cavalier's production was a logical decision based on the declining sedan sales in the United States, a decision that left only the Malibu to represent the sedan segment in Chevrolet's lineup.
Why is my 98 Chevy Cavalier overheating?
New hoses are cheap. Usually overheating – not associated with visible leaks – is caused by the electric fan not spinning nor spinning too slow, a faulty fuel pump or drive belt, an air pocket in the cooling system, a bad or incorrectly installed thermostat, a clogged radiator or faulty cap, or low coolant levels.
How many MPG does a Chevy Cavalier get?

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.
- Consequence: IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2004. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537. - Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES AND MINI VANS HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE AND SOME OTHER RETAINERS USED IN VEHICLES ASSEMBLED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1996 AND OCTOBER 31, 1997, COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JANUARY 24, 2003. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH BI-FUEL COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG) VEHICLES. THE CNG FUEL LINE AND THE CNG HIGH PRESSURE REGULATOR COOLANT LINES CAN CONTACT OTHER FUEL (GASOLINE) AND BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE. ABRASION FROM CONTACT CAN CAUSE A LEAK IN THE BRAKE PIPE, FUEL PIPE, OR BOTH.
- Consequence: ABRASION FROM CONTACT CAN CAUSE A LEAK IN THE BRAKE PIPE, FUEL PIPE, OR BOTH. A BRAKE FLUID LEAK COULD DISABLE A PORTION OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM, CAUSING LONGER STOPPING DISTANCES. GASOLINE LEAKING FROM A FUEL PIPE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD CAUSE A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPOSITION THE CNG FUEL AND COOLANT PIPES AND REPOSITION/REPAIR ANY DAMAGED FUEL OR BRAKE PIPES AS NECESSARY.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: WHEELS:LUGS/NUTS/BOLTS/STUDS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE WHEEL LUG NUTS WERE NOT TIGHTENED SECURELY RESULTING IN A FRACTURE OF THE WHEEL STUDS.

They say that cars are a liability not an investment, but my 1998 Cavalier proved that statement wrong! I bought mine brand new and drove it for 13 years. It still runs and the only thing I ever really needed to do was regular maintenance. It's been through a lot and if anyone says that a Chevy is no good then there is no way that they have ever truly owned one. I would recommend a Chevy to anyone. It was worth every penny and it showed that American made cars are at the top of the list with foreign competition. I loved my car and my faith in Chevy will never be diminished.

I've owned this car for 10 years and it's already at 200000 miles, but I haven't had to make any major repairs yet. It's great to see that some Chevys are this reliable!

I bought this car as the second owner with 234,000 miles on it, about three years ago. I've put about 60,000 miles on it and it has been a great investment. It is so much fun to drive, easy to learn stick on, and I average 33 mpg with most highway miles. This car has been incredibly reliable and has required minimal maintenance. It truly owes me nothing!

I've had my car for just over a year now, but unfortunately, I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Although it looks great, the transmission and clutch don't seem to work well together, which is a shame. It's the only car I've ever owned that I wish was an automatic. Additionally, the seats and other interior features are wearing out too quickly, which is a bit disappointing. It doesn't handle as well as I'd like, and there are a few too many rattles and squeaks for my liking. In hindsight, I think I should have invested more money in a better car.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car I bought in the summer. During the test drive and ride home, it drove great! I bought it with 123,000 miles on it and have put about 3,000 miles on it since then. Unfortunately, it has needed a few repairs. Two days after I bought it, a brake line burst, but it only cost $150 to replace. Two weeks later, it needed a new belt tensioner, which cost $350. Now, it needs new struts and the compressor is shot, which will cost about $1,000 to fix. Despite these issues, I really enjoyed driving it while it lasted. It had enough room for 3 people in the back and a nice trunk. The pickup sounded great, and it had decent speed and good comfort. I did find out from my mechanic that it had been in a major accident and needed to be scrapped, but it still looked good because of the body kit. Overall, it was a fun car to drive and had good handling.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. I bought it used with an extended warranty a week ago and so far, I'm really enjoying it. It has decent pickup, a nice look, and ample features. I've heard some people say that it doesn't always handle well, but personally, I haven't found that to be the case. It could be because of the tires, as they're wider than the standard for this car.

I've had my car for close to 3 years and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a first car. Cavaliers are generally known to be reliable cars, which is why they keep making them year after year. Over the years, I've had to replace the battery, tires, ignition switch, and serpentine belt, but these were all typical maintenance jobs within a 3 year time. I also made sure to keep up with regular oil changes, transmission changes, and brake replacements. Overall, I've had a great experience with my Cavalier and would highly recommend it!

I've had some issues with my car recently. The driver's and rear windows have both exploded while I was driving, even though nothing hit them. Additionally, the coolant light comes on when I make sharp left turns, and my windows leak when it rains. I've taken it to the dealership three times, but the issue persists. Despite these problems, I'm hopeful that they can be resolved soon.
