2004 Chevrolet Avalanche problems
The Chevrolet Avalanche is a four-door, five- or six-passenger pickup truck that was manufactured by General Motors. The Avalanche was a hybrid between the Chevrolet Suburban SUV and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, sharing the chassis with the Suburban. Unlike a typical pickup truck where the bed is mounted separately from the cab on the frame, the bed of the Avalanche was integrated with the cab body. It also featured a "midgate" behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area. The Avalanche was produced across two generations starting in 2001 and ending in 2013.
Breaking with a long-standing tradition, the Avalanche was not available as a GMC, but only as a Chevrolet. Instead, Cadillac would sell a re-badged Avalanche; however, the midgate design would be adapted for use on the GMC Envoy XUV and Hummer H2 SUT.
First generation (2001–2006)
The Avalanche was launched in September 2001 as a 2002 model on the GMT800 platform. First year Avalanches featured light gray plastic body cladding, intended to provide visual distinction from the Suburban/Yukon XL. The Avalanche also gave the public an advance look at the next generation of front fascia designs for the entire GM line. A full-length chrome strip splits each lamp assembly and the grille, with a gold Chevrolet "bow tie" in the center. The hood and fenders featured aggressive folds, in contrast to the softer designs seen on other models built on the GMT800 platform.
Avalanche was nominated for the North American SUV of the Year award and was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 2002.
The Avalanche was originally marketed as being able to "change from an SUV to a super SUV." This was made possible by a plastic cover and an exclusive "midgate," called the Convert-a-Cab system by GM, which could open and close. The midgate was a divider behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area, or folded up to make a larger cab area. A similar midgate was found on the Cadillac Escalade EXT (a rebadged Avalanche), Hummer H2 SUT, and GMC Envoy XUV.
The truck was offered as a half-ton 1500 series with a Vortec 5.3L V8 producing 285 hp (216 kW) or as a three-quarter-ton 2500 series with a Vortec 8.1L V8 with 340 hp (253 kW) and the 4L85-E four-speed transmission. The base layout is rear-wheel drive, but there is an available with selectable high/low four-wheel drive. Avalanche 2500 models from 2004–2006 were exclusively available with four-wheel drive.
For those who planned to go off-road in their Avalanche, a Z71 Off-Road package was available that added features such as off-road suspension, GM's AutoTrac full-time push-button four-wheel-drive system, all-terrain P265/70R17 white-lettered Goodyear tires, seventeen-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces with waterproof accents, front dual power bucket seats, cloth door panel inserts, GM's OnStar telematics system, all-weather rubber floor mats, Chevrolet bowtie emblems embedded into the backrests of the seats (for 2002 models), dual-zone automatic climate controls with rear HVAC vents and remote controls, remote radio controls with headphone jacks for two pairs of headphones, a security system, gray-finished side running boards, power-adjustable, heated side-view mirrors, SRS side impact airbags. Aside from these details, a Z71 Off-Road decal on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. Full leather seating surfaces were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.
For those who preferred the styling of the Z71 Off-Road package but did not plan to take their Avalanche off-road, a Z66 Premium On-Road package was also available. The Z66 On-Road package featured all the equipment that the Z71 Off-Road package offered but replaced the off-road suspension with sport on-road suspension and did not offer four-wheel drive. Aside from these details, a Z66 On-Road sticker on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. As with the Z71 Off-Road package, full leather seating surfaces without the cloth accents were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.
To further distinguish it from its Silverado siblings, the Avalanche was practically fully equipped and only came with bodyside cladding. The Avalanche included features such as 16-inch alloy wheels and tires (chromed steel on the 2500 model), an AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and six speakers, cloth seating surfaces, front bench seat with power front driver's seat, power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, full instrumentation, dual front airbags, and air conditioning. Options included OnStar telematics system, cassette player, leather seating surfaces, front dual power bucket seats that could be heated, and side airbags for the front seats. A North Face Edition, in partnership with the North Face brand included limited exterior color options, a unique Ebony/Green leather interior, special exterior ornamentation and decals, white-faced gauges, OnStar telematics system, specially colored door panel inserts and speaker grilles, and more.
For 2003, the Avalanche was slightly changed. 2003 models featured a darker cladding, but GM's new president, Rick Wagoner, demanded the removal of this "unpopular" trim (as did certain elements of the public). From mid-year, Avalanche could be ordered without cladding. The uncladded model, known as "Without Body Hardware" (or its initialism "WBH," which is also an RPO code), and alternatively called "slicksides" by GM marketers, resembled the 2003–2005 Silverado 1500 in the front. A new interior—shared with the Tahoe and Suburban—added a new, larger steering wheel with subsequent audio, cruise, and speed controls; an optional six-speaker premium Bose sound system with external amplifier; a new gauge cluster with information center and memory for the front driver's seat, brake and accelerator pedals, and side-view mirror position (on some models); new radio head units, which included an AM/FM stereo with either a single-disc or six-disc CD/MP3 changer, Radio Data System, and optional XM Satellite Radio; standard OnStar telematics system with steering wheel controls; new warning chimes that played through the vehicle's audio system instead of through a separate speaker behind the dashboard; and newly available 17-inch alloy wheels and tires. Optional features included rear audio controls with headphone jacks and a rear DVD entertainment system by Panasonic with wireless headphones. The WBH option was only available in the 1500 series.

Common 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Avalanche 2004, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Faded Plastic Trim: One of the common problems reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche is faded plastic trim on the sides, bumpers, and bed. Over time, the plastic trim can lose its color and appearance due to exposure to various elements. This issue is primarily cosmetic but can affect the overall look of the vehicle.
- Heating the Plastic Trim: To address the faded plastic trim, owners can use a heat gun to warm up the plastic and eliminate fading. However, this method can be time-consuming. Alternatively, applying trim restoration to the plastic for about 5 minutes and wiping it off with a microfiber towel can provide a faster solution to restore the appearance of the trim.
- Check Engine Light for Fuel Trim Code: Another reported problem is the check engine light coming on for a fuel trim code like P0101, which may also appear for lean codes like P0171 or P0174. This issue can indicate possible engine misfire or vibration, affecting the engine's performance and fuel efficiency.
- Air/Fuel Mixture Imbalance: The engine of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche requires an air/fuel mixture of 14.7:1 for optimal performance and fuel mileage. The mass air flow (MAF) sensor and oxygen (O2) sensors play a crucial role in measuring this ratio. Any air leakage into the intake without being detected by the MAF sensor can disrupt this ratio, triggering a check engine light.
- Potential Parts Causing Fuel Trim Code: Loose or broken air intake tubes, broken intake gaskets underneath the air intake manifold, faulty or dirty MAF sensors, and faulty O2 sensors are components that can contribute to a fuel trim code issue in the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. Addressing these parts can help resolve the check engine light and improve engine performance.
By addressing these common problems reported by owners of the Chevrolet Avalanche 2004, individuals can better understand and potentially resolve issues that may arise with this particular vehicle model.

- Summary: MY VEHICLE HAS A KELSEY HAYES ABS MODULE THAT HAS ALREADY FAILED TWICE. FIRST AT ABOUT 75.000 MILES AND NOW AT 130.000 MILES, ALWAYS WHILE DRIVING. THE MODULE WAS RECALLED IN 2002 AND THE MANUFACTURER WAS GIVEN A CHANCE TO REDESIGN IT, BUT IT IS STILL A BAD PART. THE BLOGS ARE FULL OF OWNERS CONSTANTLY COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS. I HAD TO TAKE GM TO THE MAT TO REPLACE THE FIRST ONE SINCE THE TRUCK WAS MANUFACTURED AFTER THE FIRST RECALL. THIS TIME AROUND I DIDN'T HAVE THE TIME OR PATIENCE TO DO SO AN WENT AHEAD AN REPLACED IT OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. IA M ALSO STUCK WITH THIS PART AS IT IS NOT REPLACEABLE WITH ANY OTHER BRAND. THIS IS A DANGEROUS GLITCH THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE SOMEONE GETS BADLY HURT. IN ADDITION TO THIS PROBLEM, THE LOCATION OF THE UNIT (OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AND EXPOSED TO ALL SORT OF INCLEMENT ENVIRONMENTS) IS RIDICULOUS! NO CLEVER DESIGNER WOULD HAVE CHOSEN THIS PLACEMENT.

- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:REAR/OTHER
- Summary: ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
- Consequence: A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL CUT OPEN THE GUIDE LOOP, REMOVE A PORTION OF THE LOOP, AND THEN THE REMAINING TWO SIDES SHOULD BE FOLDED OVER AND SECURED WITH A RETAINER FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 21, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: CERTAIN TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND VANS EQUIPPED WITH BOSCH HYDRO-BOOST BRAKE ASSEMBLIES, THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR MAY CRACK AND SEPARATE FROM THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY DURING NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS.
- Consequence: IF A SEPARATION OCCURRED AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, FRAGMENTS FROM THE ACCUMULATOR COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THE PRESENCE OF THIS CRACK OR FRACTURED SURFACE COULD ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE ACCUMULATOR CIRCUIT OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE LOSS OF FLUID WOULD CAUSE INCREASED STEERING AND BRAKING EFFORT AND A CRASH MAY OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL TEST THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY FOR FUNCTIONAL OPERATION OF THE TWO-FUNCTION VALVE. IF THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY FAILS THE TEST, DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 23, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC TRUCKS AT 1-866-996-9463 AND HUMMER AT 1-800-732-5493.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:TAILGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE GALVANIZED STEEL TAILGATE SUPPORT CABLES THAT RETAIN THE TAILGATE IN THE FULL OPEN (HORIZONTAL) POSITION MAY CORRODE, WEAKEN, AND EVENTUALLY FRACTURE. IF BOTH CABLES FRACTURED, THE TAILGATE WOULD SUDDENLY DROP AND STRIKE THE TOP SURFACE OF THE REAR BUMPER.
- Consequence: ANYONE SITTING OR STANDING ON THE HORIZONTAL SURFACE OF THE TAILGATE WHEN BOTH CABLES FRACTURED COULD BE INJURED BY FALLING FROM THE TAILGATE. ON VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD THE BUMPER REMOVED, THE TAILGATE MAY DROP EVEN LOWER. ADDITIONALLY, IF THERE IS CARGO ON THE TAILGATE THE CARGO MAY FALL OFF IF THE SUPPORT CABLES FRACTURE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CABLES. INTERIM OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON APRIL 7, 20004. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 24, 2004, WHEN REPLACEMENT PARTS WERE AVAILABLE, AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH OCTOBER 29, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, OR VISIT WWW.MYGMLINK.COM, AND ENTER YOUR VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, PICKUP TRUCKS, AND PASSENGER VANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 135, ?PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS.? SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION BRAKE HYDRO-BOOST HOUSING RELIEF VALVE BORE.
- Consequence: CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALVE O-RING SEAL MAY FRACTURE. STEERING EFFORTS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHILE BRAKING OR PARKING. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, A FRACTURED SEAL MAY REQUIRE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME VEHICLE DECELERATION RATE AS PRIOR TO THE SEAT FRACTURE.
- Remedy: DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE HYDRO-BOOST RELIEF VALVE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 18, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; GMC AT 1-866-996-9463; OR HUMMER AT 1-866-486-6376.

This is my second new truck and it surpasses any other truck on the market. It's not just an SUV, it's a UUV! It has the ability to do whatever I need it to, from hauling my camper or 4-wheeler to transporting entertainment in a monsoon and keeping it dry all the way to the door. As far as summer fun goes, it's amazing! I can drop out the back window, roll down the windows, and run the dunes and hills. This is truly the best truck ever!

This truck is my Tonka. It has never let me down, even though I'm typically hard on everything I have. This truck is no exception.

GM has done a superb job in creating an excellent SUV/truck hybrid. Although the vehicle had to be taken to the shop three times due to computer issues, it has been running smoothly ever since. The cabin space is ample, ensuring that passengers are not cramped. The back seat passengers can enjoy great legroom and comfortable seats. I even used the mid-gate fold down to haul a Christmas tree last year. The pick-up bed surround has lots of small storage compartments. The sunroof is great and lets in plenty of natural light. OnStar is a blessing in case of any crisis, no matter how mild. It's reassuring to have someone on standby to help you in case of an accident. XM Radio is beautiful and adds to the overall experience. The exterior design still turns heads and is sure to impress.

It does everything you need and more! It's the perfect combination of an SUV and a truck.

This truck is a great value for the money. It offers the utility of a truck and the seating of an SUV. The best thing they ever did was offer this truck without the body hardware. I wouldn't even consider this truck until they offered a 'naked' version, which looks great. The interior is very roomy and comfortable. Although the cabin has average materials that are typical of a GM product, it still feels cozy. If they had come up with better interior components such as knobs, switches, and door panels, I would have happily paid $500 more for this vehicle. Overall, I think this is a great purchase.

This vehicle has a few areas that could be improved. The cab and bed tend to collect dust, and the torque may not be sufficient for larger loads. Additionally, the storage boxes on the outside of the bed may not be as useful as one would hope, as they can leak dust and water. The back seat may be a bit cramped for adults on extended road trips, and the DVD player does not rotate to side views, requiring passengers to sit in the middle of the rear seat. The rear radio controls may be a bit confusing to use, and the exterior plastic trim can make noise at road speed due to buffeting in the wind. The seats may be a bit hard and difficult to adjust to a comfortable position, and loading a 4-wheeler in the bed may not be possible. However, overall, this vehicle has many great features and is worth considering.

Hey there! I noticed a few things to keep an eye on with your truck. The plastic side panels tend to rub on the front fenders, which can cause some rust spots. Also, now that you've hit 30,000 miles, you might start to hear some noise from the lifters and a squeaking sound from the belt. It's great to hear that you've been keeping up with oil changes though! I do want to mention that the rear visibility isn't the best and there can be quite a bit of noise and vibration when the sunroof is open. The stereo and speakers could also be better quality. Overall, it's a nice truck with some great features and plenty of room for passengers. I do wish they had included a power rear window though. It can be a bit of a hassle to have to lower the rear seats and remove the window. Some newer trucks do offer a powered rear window, so that might be something to consider. Let me know if you have any questions!

I recently experienced some issues with my vehicle, specifically with the bearings in the differential and rear axle on the passenger side. Unfortunately, this resulted in a leak onto the emergency brakes and a costly repair bill of $1,332.89. While the dealer is claiming no responsibility from GM, I have decided to avoid their products in the future and instead purchase a Toyota Avalon. Have you had a similar experience with your vehicle? It's important to make informed decisions when it comes to spending your hard-earned money.

I have been experiencing issues with the brakes on my GM vehicle. Despite having them replaced every 20,000 miles, the dealer insists that this is normal and GM stands behind their decision. However, I have concerns about the safety of the vehicle if the brakes are not functioning properly. During my last visit, the technician claimed that the brakes were shot, while the service manager said they were okay. Three months later, I had to replace the brakes and rotor. I am confused as to why GM would blindly accept whatever the dealer says, especially when there are two different stories. Although I appreciate the design of GM vehicles, I am hesitant to purchase another one if they do not prioritize safety and customer satisfaction. I hope that GM takes these concerns seriously and makes the necessary changes to regain my trust as a customer.

Driving on a semi-busy street would be a breeze with this vehicle, right? Unfortunately, I got into an accident with a Saturn car. My car was totaled, but the Saturn only had a small dent in the side! I was turning at a light when the Saturn ran the red light and hit me. I was on my way to pick up my baby, thank God he wasn't in the car with me!!
