2009 Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan is a seven-seat minivan and rebadged variant of the Chrysler RT platform, with revised styling, content features, and suspension tuning from the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country.
Manufactured alongside the Chrysler and Dodge minivans at Windsor Assembly and marketed in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Routan debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and went on sale in the United States in September of the same year as a 2009 model. The Routan's minivan variants include the Dodge Caravan, Ram C/V, Chrysler Town & Country, and Lancia Voyager (export)—that by 2009 have ranked as the 13th best-selling automotive nameplate worldwide, with over 12 million sold.
Production of the Routan was halted in 2012 due to high inventory levels, and Volkswagen announced the 2013 model year would be primarily reserved for rental car companies and other fleets, with limited availability to the public at dealer showrooms. This also held for the 2014 model year Routan.

Common 2009 Volkswagen Routan problems
The Volkswagen Routan, introduced in 2009, was a rebadged version of the Dodge Grand Caravan with a touch of German flair. While the Routan received high marks in crash protection, it was not without its share of issues, particularly in the 2009 model year.
One of the most common problems reported by 2009 Volkswagen Routan owners is the car shutting off while driving, steering locking, and the car seizing.
Another electrical issue that affects the 2009 Routan is the interior lights flickering on and off. This problem has been reported by multiple owners, with an average cost to fix of $1,500 and an average mileage of 77,000 miles. This issue is likely related to the car's electrical system, which is also responsible for the car shutting off while driving.
In addition to electrical issues, the 2009 Routan has also been reported to have problems with the transmission. Some owners have reported that their transmission needs to be replaced, with an average cost of $3,000.
The 2009 Routan also has a problem with coolant leaks at the Y-diverter valve. The plastic Y is prone to cracking every 40k or 50k miles, which can lead to coolant leaks and engine damage. This problem is not unique to the 2009 model year, but it is a common issue that affects many Routan owners.
Finally, the 2009 Routan has been reported to have problems with the front driver and passenger window getting stuck and rolling down when trying to roll it up.
In conclusion, the 2009 Volkswagen Routan has a number of common problems that affect its electrical system, transmission, coolant system, and windows. These problems can be expensive to fix and can affect the car's reliability and safety. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to consider them when making a purchasing decision.

Why did Volkswagen stop making the Routan?
Automotive industry analysts were not surprised by VW's decision to drop the Routan because buyers had no reason for selecting the Routan over the similar Dodge Grand Caravan or the Chrysler Town & Country, and the Routan's base price of nearly $28,000 was far more than the basic $21,000 Grand Caravan, while the ...

- Date Of Incident: 2020-03-02
- VIN: 2V8HW54X69R
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THERE ARE TWO ISSUES THAT KEEP OCCURRING THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE RELATED. FIRST, SOMETIMES WHEN I START THE VEHICLE EVERY SINGLE LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL BE LIT UP, THE WIPERS WILL BE ON, THE RADIO WON'T WORK, AND NONE OF THE GAUGES WILL BE WORKING. I HAVE TO USE MY GPS JUST TO KNOW WHAT MY SPEED IS SINCE THE SPEDOMETER DOESN'T WORK. I ALSO CAN'T TURN ON MY DEFROST WHEN THIS HAPPENS SO I'M STUCK SITTING IN THE PARKING LOT WAITING. EVENTUALLY IT WILL RANDOMLY SWITCH BACK TO NORMAL AND THEN EVERYTHING WORKS. MY SECOND ISSUE IS THAT I WILL LOSE ALL POWER WHILE DRIVING. THIS HAPPENED IN A ROUNDABOUT ONCE WHICH ALMOST CAUSED A CRASH! I LOSE IGNITION, POWER STEERING, EVERYTHING. I HAVE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, PUT IT IN PARK, AND TURN THE IGNITION OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN. ONE OF THESE DAYS THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE A CRASH AND THEN I WILL BE SUING VOLKSWAGEN WHEN MY BABIES GET INJURED BECAUSE OF THIS. FROM THE LOOKS OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS THIS IS HAPPENING TO A LOT OF THESE VANS!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-08
- VIN: 2V8HW64X49R
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: VEHICLE HAS BEEN MOVING AND WILL SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN WHILE DRIVING. ALL POWER STEERING, BRAKING AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS GO OUT. I HAVE TO TRY TO MANUALLY SWERVE OFF THE ROAD AND PUT THE CAR IN PARK. TAKE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION AND RESTART. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN FIXED IN 2015 UNDER A RECALL WITH THE WIN MODULE AND VW INDICATES THAT SINCE IT'S BEEN FIXED THEY ONLY OFFER A 12 MONTH WARRANTY. FOR ME TO GET A NEW WIN MODULE, THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WOULD BE $2,000 AND A LONG ESTIMATED TIME WITHOUT THE CAR. THIS CAR IS BLUE BOOKED AS ONLY WORTH $3,500.00. THIS IS AGAIN A FAULTY PIECE THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY THE RECALL. THE CAR ONLY HAS 75K MILES. THERE'S NO REASON TO HAVE A CAR WITH 75K MILES AND NEED TWO WIN MODULES SO FAR. I WANT THIS TO BE IN WRITING THAT WHEN I AM DRIVING ON I-95 AND MY CAR SUDDENLY STALLS AND MY 2 1/2 YEAR OLD AND 4 1/2 YEAR OLD AND MYSELF END UP IN A CASKET, IT'S BECAUSE OF THIS FAULTY PRODUCT WHICH THEY WILL NOT COVER AGAIN ON THE RECALL.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-01
- VIN: 2V8HW54X69R
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME THING YET VW REFUSES TO ADMIT IT IS A PROBLEM. MY ELECTRICAL WILL SHUT OFF COMPLETELY. I WILL NORMALLY LOOSE ANYTHING ELECTRICAL, THROTTLE, SOMETIMES POWER STEERING. THEN THE ELECTRICAL COMES BACK ON AND ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD CLUSTER COME ON. IT WILL CONTINUALLY DO THIS, EVEN WHEN YOU ARE ON THE FREEWAY. THEY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DENY THIS UNTIL SOMEBODY IS KILLED OR SEVERELY INJURED DUE TO THIS MALFUNCTION. I BOUGHT MY 2009 VW ROUTAN USED AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS DODGING REPLACING THE TPIM/IGNITION SWITCH, PROBABLY BECAUSE IT IS EXPENSIVE. VW SHOULD ALSO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SINCE IT IS HAZARDOUS TO DRIVE. PLEASE IF YOU ARE READING THIS AND HAVE A VW ROUTAN WITH THIS ISSUE, MAKE A REPORT AND BRING THIS TO LIGHT.

DRIVING IT MAKES ME VERY NERVOUS BUT I CAN'T CHANGE CARS RIGHT NOW. IT HAS HAPPENED BOTH ON SMALL STREETS AND HIGHWAY IN MOTION.

Negative 2009 Volkswagen Routan car reviews
Positive 2009 Volkswagen Routan car reviews
-
We are thrilled with our new Routan! When it comes to shopping for a minivan in this market, there really is no other choice in my opinion. The alternatives are outdated, unexciting, and unremarkable. If you're looking for something unique, the Routan is the way to go. It's stunning, handles superbly for a minivan, comes loaded with all the features you need, and has plenty of cool tech gadgets. Plus, it's reasonably priced and offers 0% financing. For us, the decision was easy - the only tough part was choosing a color!
-
I initially resisted the idea of getting a mini-van, but with three young kids, it became a necessity. I was a bit hesitant to choose the Routan due to its 're-badged' Chrysler persona and being a first model year. However, I have been pleasantly surprised with my experience so far. My wife and I have owned six VW's, and we can confidently say that it has that classic VW feel and drive. Compared to our Honda Pilot, it is an absolute dream to drive. We also considered the Odyssey, but it just didn't have the same driving feel and suffered from the usual interior rattling that we've experienced with all of our Hondas. Overall, we are thrilled with our decision to go with the Routan. It definitely has more VW to it than we expected.

...but after having our third child, we decided to give in. We considered the Odyssey and Sienna, but they were too common and uninteresting for our taste. The Routan, on the other hand, caught our attention with its sleek design, excellent driving performance thanks to its stiffer VW suspension, and spacious interior. Although we are aware that it is essentially a Chrysler, the interior has enough VW feel to make it enjoyable. We particularly love the convenience of the dual-electric doors, which is not always available on some Toyota Sienna models. The exterior boasts strong lines that make it stand out. We will provide a detailed review of its reliability later. In summary, the Routan is the perfect minivan for those who never thought they would own one. As a guy, I don't mind being seen driving it, which says a lot about its appeal.

I can confidently say that the Routan is a unique vehicle, distinct from the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan. As an owner of a Chrysler Town & Country and a driver of the Dodge Grand Caravan, I can attest to the differences. The seats in the Routan are firm and distinctly Volkswagen, unlike the mushy seats in the other two. While the base engine in the S model is the 3.8L Chrysler engine, the interior design and driving experience are unmistakably Volkswagen. As someone who has owned over 6 VWs in the past 20 years, I can say that the Routan feels, looks, and acts like a true VW. The fact that it shares an engine and body panels with the other two does not diminish its Volkswagen identity.

The 2011 VW Routan may have borrowed its body and design concept from the Dodge Caravan, but it's packed with German engineering, which is exactly what my family and I needed. On every trip, my four children and my mother are seated comfortably, and there's plenty of room for our items and activities. I wouldn't want to drive anything else, except for the Amarok, but unfortunately, those aren't sold here in the U.S. We also love our 2003 VW Beetle TDI (Diesel). My children plan on driving their own VWs when they become of age. How exciting!

This van has experienced several issues, including rotor/brake problems (requiring replacement 4 times on the front and 2 times on the rear), check engine light/thermostat issues 4 times, driver's side window problems, and remote start problems. Although it may appear attractive on the inside and outside, it is important to note that once the warranty expires, the cost of maintaining this vehicle on the road will be significant. While it may not be the best example of German engineering, it is important to note that every vehicle has its own set of issues. I have found that my previous Nissan Quest was more reliable than this van. I am currently exploring my options under the Lemon Law.

This car is mostly made by Chrysler. If you are looking for a VW, this might not be the best option for you. Although the suspension is VW, the rest of the car is Chrysler. It is important to note that VW sells four different vans in Germany. Unfortunately, this car has lost 30% of its value in less than a year. If I had known this beforehand, I would have leased it. If you are interested in a Routan, you could consider buying a Town and Country and adding VW logos. They are essentially the same car!

This vehicle has been extremely disappointing. Despite having it for only a week, it has required daily service visits. I am confident that a refund is the appropriate course of action.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 09 Routan SEL. I've had it for about 4 months and driven around 4000 miles. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it that have been a bit frustrating. The brakes have been squealing since around the 1000 mile mark, and even though a qualified technician said it's normal, it's been a bit bothersome. Additionally, both of the sliding doors have given me some trouble, including not closing properly and even opening on their own. It's been a bit of a challenge, especially with two young kids. On top of that, the gas mileage hasn't been great. However, I do think it's a beautiful vehicle. I just wish the issues weren't so frustrating. Thank you for listening to my experience!

This car has had several issues with the brakes, electrical system, engine, transmission, and even the overhead DVD players. However, I am confident that these problems can be resolved with the right expertise and attention.
