Common 2002 Infiniti I35 problems
The Infiniti I35, a luxury sedan produced by Nissan's premium brand, has been praised for its reliability and performance:
- U-Turn Radius: One of the most common complaints about the 2002 Infiniti I35 is its poor U-turn radius, which can make maneuvering in tight spaces difficult, especially for those who use their vehicles for delivery purposes.
- Fuel Efficiency: Another issue reported by owners is the car's relatively low fuel efficiency, with some reporting as low as 16 miles per gallon in city driving, even when keeping the RPM below 2500.
- Audio System: Some owners have reported dissatisfaction with the audio system's sound quality, which they find to be inferior to that of competing models like the 2003 Acura TL.
- Subwoofer Cutoff Problem: A common issue experienced by I35 owners is a subwoofer cutoff problem, which can be temporarily fixed by placing paper in a box near the subwoofer, but ultimately requires replacement of the subwoofer or related components.
- Ignition Coil Failure: Faulty ignition coils are a common problem in the 2002 Infiniti I35, with some owners reporting the need to replace them multiple times over the vehicle's lifespan.
- Power Steering High Pressure Hose Leaks: Leaks in the power steering high pressure hose can lead to expensive repairs, with some owners reporting bills of over $300 to fix the issue.
- Starter Failure: Starter failure is another common problem in the 2002 Infiniti I35, with some owners reporting the need to replace the starter multiple times over the vehicle's lifespan.
- Driver's Seat Moving Motors: Issues with the driver's seat moving motors, which may only work on one side of the seat, have been reported by some I35 owners.
- Valve Cover Leaks: Leaks in the valve covers, particularly at the sparkplug rings, can be a common issue in the 2002 Infiniti I35, requiring replacement of the valve covers and potentially other related components.
- Alternator Failure: Alternator failure is another frequently reported problem in the 2002 Infiniti I35, with some owners reporting the need to replace the alternator multiple times over the vehicle's lifespan.
While these issues can be frustrating for owners, it is important to note that many of them can be addressed with routine maintenance and timely repairs. Additionally, the I35's VQ35 engine is known for its reliability, and with proper care, these vehicles can provide many years of trouble-free driving.
Are Infiniti I35 expensive to maintain?
The average annual repair cost for a INFINITI is $638, which means it has above average ownership costs. The other factors that contribute to INFINITI reliability include an average of 0.7 visits to a repair shop per year and a 10% probability of a repair being severe.
Does the Infiniti I35 have a VQ engine?
The 3.5-liter V6 is part of the VQ engine series that has won acclaim as one of the “Ten Best Engines” from Ward's Auto World magazine for nine consecutive years.
Is the Infiniti I35 the same as a Nissan Maxima?
Even though it's a "Nissan", the brand MAXIMA is 100x stronger than I-30/35. Infiniti as a whole is seen as a 2nd tier luxury brand. Yes the I35 offers slightly more luxurious features, but the Maxima matches most. Overall, looking as sales, it is obvious a Maxima is seen as a better car than a I-35.
What was the last year of the Infiniti I35?
2004
Likely due to redundancy and INFINITI's move away from front-wheel drive cars, the 2004 model year was the final appearance of the I35 sedan.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-06
- VIN: JNKDA31AX2T
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: GOVERNMENT REPORTS INDICATE THAT 85% OF ALL ACCIDENTS OCCURR DURING LOW LIGHT SITUATIONS. THE NEW PLASTIC LIGHTS, THAT COME ON EVERY AUTOMOBILE, ARE ECONOMICALLY UNREASONABLE TO REPLACE WHEN THEY GET SAND BLASTED OR FOGGED OVER FROM EXPOSURE TO THE SUN AND OTHER ELEMENTS OF NATURE. THE LIGHTS FOR MY 2002 VEHICLE ARE $1,000.00 EACH. THE LIGHTS ARE ALL SANDBLASTED AND FOGGY AND DO NOT EMIT LIGHT WELL. I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THE LIGHTS WHEN THE LIGHTS COST ALMOST AS MUCH AS THE CAR. THE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD MAKE THE COMPONENTS ECONOMICALLY FEASABLE TO REPLACE OR MAKE THEM OUT OF GLASS WHICH WILL NOT FOG OVER. IF NOT THAT THEN THE MANUFACTURERS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE LIGHTS FREE AS LONG AS THE VEHICLE IS DRIVABLE AND ON THE ROAD LEGALLY REGISTERED FOR THAT FUNCTION. ONCE THE LIGHTS HAVE BECOME FOGGED,OR BLASTED, POLISHING THEM ONLY LASTS FOR AROUND 30 DAYS. REPETITIVE POLISHING WILL CHANGE THE OPTICS OF THE LIGHT AND EVENTUALLY YOU WILL POLISH CLEAR THROUGH THE PLASTIC. THESE LIGHTS ARE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY EITHER THE MANUFACTURERS OR THE GOVERNMENT.

2002 Infiniti I35 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2002 Infiniti I35.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2001-2003 Maxima, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2007-2011 Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback, 2001-2004 Infiniti I30 and I35, 2002-2003 Inifiniti QX4, 2003-2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 and 2006-2010 M35 and M45 vehicles. The vehicles are equipped with non-desiccated, frontal passenger air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflators with alternate desiccated inflators, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2020. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 888-737-9511 or Infiniti customer service at 888-810-3715.
- Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2001-2003 Nissan Maxima, 2002-2004 Pathfinder, 2002-2006 Sentra, 2002-2003 Infiniti QX4 and I35, 2003 FX35 and FX45, and 2001 I30 vehicles. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on June 15, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. Note: On December 18, 2015 Nissan informed NHTSA of an amendment of this recall to remove 2004-2005 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR OR CAM POSITION SENSOR MAY HAVE AN IMPROPER SOLDER JOINT DUE TO SOLDER DEFORMATION CAUSED BY HEAT STRESS ACCELERATED BY THE EXISTENCE OF FLUX RESIDUE DURING THE SOLDERING PROCESS.
- Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON, CREATE A NO START CONDITION, CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE POWER, OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS. CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR(S), AND IN SOME CASES, THE VARIABLE TIMING CONTROL SENSOR(S). VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN, 01V357, ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. THE REPLACEMENT SENSORS USED IN THAT CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO AFFECTED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE PIN AT THE END OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION TRANSVERSE LINK (LOWER CONTROL ARM) COULD BREAK WHERE IT IS MOUNTED TO THE FRAME.
- Consequence: THIS CAN CAUSE A KNOCKING SOUND AND ABNORMAL STEERING. THIS COULD RESULT IN DIFFICULTY CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE TRANSVERSE LINKS ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDES WITH NEW ONES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 29, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM, THE STOPPER FOR THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WILL PREVENT EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT OF THE ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR. IF THE DRIVER APPLIES OVERLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHILE AT THE SAME TIME PUSHING IT TO THE RIGHT, THE PEDAL CAN "OVER TRAVEL" DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE PEDAL STOPPER.

This is a great car! It's been my trusty companion for 3 years now, and despite having driven 130,000 miles, I've only had a few minor issues. The gas mileage is pretty good, and with 255 hp, it's incredibly fast. The car is very well built and looks nice too. I think Infiniti is a fantastic car brand, and I even think they should consider making an I45 - I bet it would be a beast!

The car boasts a powerful and seamless 255hp V6 engine, excellent handling, high quality and affordability, abundant standard features, and a luxurious and inviting interior. All of this comes with the added benefit of the Infiniti name and exceptional service.

The I-35 is a terrific car. Bought it used and have owned it for three years. It drives great and is extremely reliable. I highly recommend this vehicle for someone looking for a great used car!
-
This is the best car you have ever owned. You have never had any mechanical or electric problems in the 10+ years you have owned it. It's a great, safe vehicle for long trips and it's super comfortable with a quiet drive.

I am pleased with the car's quality, performance, and features. However, the ride can be harsh over bumps and the road grain is noticeable.

The quality of this car does not live up to the standards that Infiniti has been advertising. Despite having driven it for a year, I have experienced numerous issues such as rattling, wind noise, a cocked steering wheel, out-of-round tires, a faulty compass, and poor dealership services. As a result, I am considering selling it.

This car has had multiple issues with its electrical, gas, sun roof, heating and cooling systems, as well as window problems. Despite having 121,000 miles, it has required significant repairs, including the replacement of motor mounts. While I purchased it from a used car lot with good reviews, I have learned that buying a second-hand car can be risky. Despite the challenges, I have invested $1500 in repairs to keep the car running. Although it has been a difficult experience, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and ownership.

I purchased a used car with 150,000 miles on it and have put an additional 22,000 miles on it since last August. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the car, including a faulty alternator, a seat that wouldn't move for a month or two, a stuck window due to a dead battery, failing motor mounts, a bad ignition coil, and an oil leak. While the car can be enjoyable to drive at times, I would not recommend it as a first car. Additionally, I had to replace the battery. Based on my experience, I would advise against purchasing Nissan products. If I had known about these issues beforehand, I would not have bought the car and would have left it at the dealership.
