The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.

History

The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.

The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.

The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).

Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1999 Ford Ford truck problems

The 1999 Ford F-150 has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to its transmission, alternator belt, ball joints, hard starting, and suspension.

  • Automatic Transmission: The transmission is liable to fall out of alignment if the TR/MLP sensor is faulty. This issue is most commonly reported in 1994-1995 model F-150s. On 1990-1993 models, flare-up issues with the transmission have also been reported. Ford has attributed this issue to distorted valve plates.
  • Ball Joints: On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely. Consequently, you will need to change them out for new ones.
  • Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s. Ford attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module. Symptoms of the problem include vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve. An engine that cranks and stalls or fails to start altogether indicates this problem.
  • Suspension: Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks have reported problems with the front suspension system. The problem is due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, get newer, stronger leaf springs.

In addition to these problems, the 1999 Ford F-150 has also been known to have issues with the EGR sensor sticking, leading to a rough idle. This problem is typically caused by the EGR valve remaining slightly open and can be resolved by replacing the valve and sensor, typically costing around $200.

The most severe of common Ford F-150 problems is the spark plug ejection, which can lead to costlier repairs. F-150 models with a V8 engine are known to eject spark plugs, causing a tapping or knocking noise from the engine and engine misfires at all speeds. This problem occurs because the threads on the cylinder head are too short or soft, and the combustion inside the chamber overwhelms the threads and destroys them.

Despite these common problems, the Ford F-150 has received a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0 from RepairPal, placing it in seventh of 17 full-size trucks. This above-average score is based on the average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance, the frequency of unscheduled repairs, and the severity of those repairs.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-06
  • VIN: 1FMPU18L3XL
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: PREMATURE PERFORATED CORROSION OF ENTIRE STEEL BRAKE LINE OF MY 1999 FORD EXPEDITION EDDIE BAUER 5.4L 4WD WAS DISCOVERED AFTER MY BRAKE WARNING LIGHT WENT ON WITHOUT ANY PERCEIVED PROBLEM WITH BRAKING NOTED. INSPECTION OF THE BRAKES BY A NON-DEALER VENDOR REVEALED A WELL MAINTAINED BRAKE SYSTEM EXCEPT FOR SEVERE CORROSION OF THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE SYSTEM WITH A LEAK ABOVE THE GAS TANK SUSPECTED. NO REPAIRS WERE STARTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY DELIVERED TO THE DEALER (AL PACKER FORD). THE DEALER REPORTED THAT THE BRAKE LINE HAD CORRODED THROUGH CLOSE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER AND WAS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID DOWN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE BRAKE LINE. CUSTOMER HAS AUTHORIZED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE CORROSION RIDDEN BRAKE LINE SETUP AT AN ESTIMATED COST OF $700.00 + THAT SO FAR IS NOT COVERED BY FORD. THE DEALER HAS BEEN INSTUCTED TO HOLD ALL REMOVED PARTS FOR INSPECTION. REVIEW OF REPORTS SUBMITTED BY OTHERS RE BRAKE LINE CORROSION AND BRAKE FAILURE EVENTS AND REPORT OF THIS EVENT TO FORD FOR CONSIDERATION FOR COVERAGE AS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN MATERIAL (INFERIOR STEEL BRAKE-LINE SUSCEPTIBLE TO RUST PERFORATING CORROSION) DID NOT GENERATE AN OFFER FOR COVERAGE OR TECHNICAL BULLETIN ADVISING THESE COMPONENTS BE CLOSELY INSPECTED FOR THIS POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING AND UNEXPECTED SOURCE OF BRAKE FAILURE AS WELL AS A POTENTIAL RISK FOR UNEXPECTED VEHICLE FIRE. I REQUEST A TECHNICAL BULLETIN AND/OR RECALL FOR INSPECTION FOR CORROSION OF BRAKELINES ON ALL FORD EXPEDITIONS. HOPEFULLY WE MAY SAVE SOME-ONE'S LIFE FROM TRAGEDY. *TR

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-11-26
  • VIN: 1FMPU18L3XL
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: RE: FORD MOTOR COMPANY TRUCK WINDSHIELDS NOT SEALED PROPERLY WHILE DRIVING IN A HARD RAIN, I HAVE A 99 FORD EXPEDITION AND IT SOMEHOW HAD WATER LEAK INTO THE FUSE PANEL SHORTING IT OUT, ALSO SHORTED OUT THE GEM AND THE PCM. THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL BURNING SMELL, SMOKE FROM DASH. THERE WERE NO FLAMES, HOWEVER SOMETHING WAS BURNING SOMEWHERE. TRUCK QUIT RUNNING. BROKE DOWN 165 MILES AWAY FROM HOME. FIRST WE TRIED A "NEW" BATTERY, TRIED JUMPING IT NOTHING WORKED. WE HAD IT TOWED TO THE CLOSEST FORD DEALER - LAKE FORD IN LEWISTOWN, PA. THEY SAY IT NEEDS A NEW FUSE PANEL, GEM, PCM OVER $800 AND THIS DOESN'T EVEN GUARANTEE A RUNNING VEHICLE. ALSO THEY SAY THAT EVEN IF THE VEHICLE DOES START THERE WILL BE NO AIRBAGS! OR RADIO (THEY WERE SHORTED INTERNALLY). THE SAFETY ISSUE I'D LIKE TO REPORT IS THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE TRUCK CUTS OUT INSTANTLY. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED APPROX. 6 MOS. BEFORE THIS INCIDENT . AGAIN DRIVING IN A HARD RAIN I WAS PULLING OUT INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. LUCKILY I DIDN'T PULL ALL THE WAY OUT IN FRONT OF THE TRAFFIC BEFORE MY TRUCK JUST QUIT RUNNING. HAD TO PUSH IT OFF THE ROAD AND A JUMP GOT IT STARTED THIS TIME. AT THIS TIME I HAD NO IDEA WHAT CAUSED THIS. SINCE THEN I TALKED TO OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM. THEY SAID FORD KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT IT IS AND THEY EVEN HAVE A NAME FOR IT - THEY CALL IT "WATER INTRUSION". I URGE YOU TO HAVE THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY PUT IN A RECALL ON THIS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED OUT THERE!. *NM

TOW TRUCK OPERATOR ALSO MENTIONED THAT HE HIMSELF HAD TOWED BETWEEN 15 AND 20 EXPEDITIONS DUE TO THIS SPARK PLUG PROBLEM AND WE LIVE IN A SMALL COMMUNITY. AFTER EXAMINING, MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT ONE HALF OF THE HEAD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE SPARK PLUG COMING OUT OF THE HEAD AND STRIPING THE THREADS ON ITS WAY OUT. HE CALLED FELLOW MECHANIC THAT WORKS AT FORD WHO TOLD HIM HE HAS REPLACED MANY FORDS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THREADS ARE NOT ADEQUATE FOR HOLDING SPARK PLUG IN HEAD. OTHER DAMAGE WAS DONE UNDER THE HOOD DUE TO EJECTION OF PLUG. CHANCES ARE GOOD THAT THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM COULD HAPPEN TO THE OTHER SIDE A DIRECT QUOTE FROM MY MECHANIC. *JB
