1999 Mercury Tracer problems
The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.
The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.
After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Common 1999 Mercury Tracer problems
The Mercury Tracer, a compact car produced by Ford Motor Company, has been known to have several common problems throughout its generations. This article will focus on the second and third generations of the Mercury Tracer (1991-1996 and 1997-1999, respectively) and the engine-specific issues that have been reported by owners.
Second Generation (1991-1996)
- Faulty Distributor Cap and Rotor: Another common issue in the second generation of the Mercury Tracer is a faulty distributor cap and rotor, which can cause misfires. If you notice that your Tracer is misfiring, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your engine.
- Stalling or Rough Idle: Stalling or rough idle can be caused by vacuum leaks in the second generation of the Mercury Tracer. If you notice that your Tracer is stalling or idling roughly, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your engine.
Third Generation (1997-1999)
- Ignition Switch Failures: Ignition switch failures are a common issue in the third generation of the Mercury Tracer. These failures can lead to stalling or no start, and it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your engine.
- Alternator Failures: Alternator failures can result in battery drain or a dead battery in the third generation of the Mercury Tracer. If you notice that your Tracer's battery is draining quickly or that it's having trouble starting, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your electrical system.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: Intake manifold gasket leaks can cause coolant loss and overheating in the third generation of the Mercury Tracer. If you notice that your Tracer is overheating or that it's losing coolant, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your engine.
Engine-Specific Issues
- 1.6-Liter Engine: The 1.6-liter engine in the Mercury Tracer has been known to have several common issues. One of these issues is timing belt failure, which can cause engine damage. It's important to have your timing belt inspected and replaced regularly to prevent this issue. Another common issue with the 1.6-liter engine is oil leaks from camshaft seals. Overheating can also be a problem with this engine, and it can be caused by a faulty thermostat.
- 1.8-Liter Engine: The 1.8-liter engine in the Mercury Tracer has also been known to have several common issues. One of these issues is cracked cylinder heads, which can cause coolant loss and overheating. Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets are also common with this engine. Additionally, a faulty camshaft position sensor can cause stalling or rough running in the 1.8-liter engine.
- 2.0-Liter Engine: The 2.0-liter engine in the Mercury Tracer has been known to have several common issues. One of these issues is oil leaks from the rear main seal. Misfires can also be a problem with this engine, and they can be caused by a faulty ignition coil. Stalling or rough idle can also be caused by a faulty idle air control valve in the 2.0-liter engine.
In conclusion, the Mercury Tracer has been known to have several common problems throughout its generations. These issues can range from transmission problems to engine-specific issues, and it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic or technician as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your vehicle. Regular maintenance, such as checking and changing the transmission fluid and filter, can help prevent transmission problems and other related issues. It's important to follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule for your Tracer to keep it running smoothly and prevent costly repairs down the line.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-09-28
- VIN: 1MEFM13P4XW
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: THE TRUNK REFLECTOR PLASTIC PEGS BROKE AND I'VE SEEN THIS ON OTHER TRACERS AS WELL. WE ARE UNABLE TO FIND ANOTHER. IF WE WERE TO GO TO A USED CAR PARTS LOT, MOST LIKELY, THEY WOULD BREAK BEFORE WE COULD POP ONE OFF. WE ARE FORCED TO USE TAPE TO HOLD IT IN PLACE. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP SAID THAT PART COULDN'T BE ORDERED ANYMORE. YES, THIS IS AN OLD CAR, BUT STILL, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE ON THE FREEWAY WITHOUT OUR TRUNK REFLECTOR BLOWING OFF AND CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE DRIVER REAR TAIL LIGHT IS DOING THE SAME THING TOO. THE LIGHT WORKS, BUT THE PLASTIC FITTINGS BREAK AND THE LIGHT COULD BLOW OFF AS WELL--BUT IT IS MOSTLY INTACT AT THIS TIME AND I'M PRETTY SURE I CAN BUY ANOTHER, HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME OUR TAPE DOES RUN FROM MOST OF THE REFLECTOR TO THE LIGHT AS WELL. I JUST THINK THEY SHOULD MAKE A TRUNK REFLECTOR THAT DOESN'T BLOW OFF. I DON'T CARE HOW OLD THE CAR IS. *TR

Hey there! Have you checked out the engine? It can tell you a lot about the car's condition and how well the owner has maintained it.

This car is really comfortable and has some great features like air bags, a CD player, and AM/FM radio. Although I had a couple of issues with a loose ground wire and a leaking heating core, they were both fixed and the car is still in excellent condition on the outside. The only downside is that there are a few stains on the floor carpet due to the heating core. Overall, it's a great car!

I recently purchased a car from a dealership that I thought was a former loaner car. Unfortunately, I later discovered that it had been in a rear-end accident, which was not disclosed to me by the dealership. Despite this setback, I decided to keep the car as a 'beater' car for on the road sales. Surprisingly, the car has been amazing and has not given me any problems. Although I initially had mixed feelings about the car, I have grown to appreciate its reliability and quality. While I am now considering replacing it with a new vehicle, I will definitely miss this car. It has exceeded my expectations and has been a great investment for the money I paid for it.

I'm so glad to hear that your 1999 Mercury Tracer GS is still running flawlessly after all these years! It's impressive that you've logged just a notch under 100k and never had to put a penny into repairs. With 36 mpg on the highway, it's definitely a fuel-efficient car. It's great to hear that the acceleration puts the new 2006 Toyota Matrix or the Vibe to shame. It seems like they hit the jackpot with this one. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Ownership of the Mercury Tracer has been a near flawless experience. This vehicle gives great fuel economy, ride comfort, and handling.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It's amazing how much you've been able to improve it over the years, and I'm sure it's been a great investment. While the acceleration and ride quality may not be perfect, it sounds like you've been able to make the most of it and enjoy the car for what it is. The blue color and styling are definitely a plus, and it's impressive that you were able to get such great gas mileage. It's clear that this car has been through a lot, but it's great to hear that it served you well through the tough Wisconsin winters and the challenges of teenage driving. It's always tough to say goodbye to a car that has been such a reliable companion, but I'm sure you'll find another great car to take its place!

This car seems to be great overall, but unfortunately, the seats are extremely uncomfortable. After driving for just an hour, I experience severe pain in my posterior.
