1994 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.
The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Common 1994 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The 1994 Mitsubishi Montero is a popular SUV, but it has some common problems that owners have reported. These issues include electrical problems, crankshaft position sensor issues, and engine stalling.
One of the most common electrical problems in the 1994 Mitsubishi Montero is related to the camshaft position sensor. This sensor is responsible for providing the engine control module (ECM) with the necessary information to determine ignition and injector timing. When the camshaft position sensor malfunctions, the ECM may not receive the required information, causing the engine to shut down. Replacing the sensor can solve this problem, as one owner reported in a forum post.
Another common issue in the 1994 Mitsubishi Montero is related to the crankshaft position sensor. This sensor is responsible for sending signals to the ECM, which are used to determine ignition and injector timing. When the crankshaft position sensor malfunctions, the engine may stall during idling or while driving. Shaking the sensor during idling can help diagnose this problem, as the engine may stall if the sensor's connector is not making proper contact. If the harness tests properly and there is an abnormality in the crankshaft position sensor system, then the sensor should be replaced.
Finally, engine stalling is a common problem in the 1994 Mitsubishi Montero. This can be caused by a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor or a broken timing belt. If the crankshaft position sensor output is 0 rpm during cranking when the engine cannot be started, then the cause is probably a malfunction of the crankshaft position sensor or a broken timing belt.
In summary, the 1994 Mitsubishi Montero has some common problems that owners have reported, including electrical issues related to the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and engine stalling. These issues can be diagnosed and repaired by a qualified mechanic, and preventative maintenance can help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.
Are old Mitsubishi Monteros reliable?
According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.
Is Montero Sport fuel efficient?
Fuel economy
During our testing, the midsize SUV was able to return about 7km/L in heavy city traffic and 17.7km/L in real-world highway conditions. In a mixed city and highway driving conditions, the Montero Sport was able to put up a fuel economy figure of 14.4km/L.
How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.
Why did they stop making Mitsubishi Montero?
Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: 1994 MITSUBISHI MONTERO BOLT SECURING CRANKSHAFT PULLEY CAME LOOSE RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER STEERING. ACCIDENT AVERTED, THANK GOD. AS STATED IN OTHER COMPLAINTS, MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP AND MITSUBISHI AMERICA ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO REPAIR MY TRUCK BECAUSE MY VIN IS NOT A MATCH FOR THE RECALL ON THIS SAME EXACT PROBLEM. MY GUESS IS THAT WHEN SOMEONE DOES HAVE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THIS MALFUNCTION THEY'LL PAY DEARLY IN LAWSUIT LOSSES WHEN THEY COULD SIMPLY ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM AND KEEP THEIR CONSUMERS SAFE! I WILL BEGIN A WRITING CAMPAIGN IN REGARD TO THIS ISSUE BECAUSE IT'S CLEAR THAT MITSUBISHI DOESN'T CARE UNTIL SOMEONE DIES. NICE WAY TO RUN YOUR COMPANY. BY THE WAY, THERE ARE NO FIRES/DEATHS/DAMAGE OR POLICE REPORTS BECAUSE THUS FAR, EVERYONE EXPERIENCING THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN LUCKY! *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-12-22
- VIN: JA4MR41H8RJ
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 1994 MITSUBISHI 3.0L MONTERO AT 55MPH ON A FOUR-LANE HIGHWAY, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED. I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT HITTING ANY OTHER VEHICLES.WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MY DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY DETERMINED THAT THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT HAD BROKEN OFF INSIDE THE ENGINE. THEIR RECOMMENDATION WAS TO INSTALL A REBUILT ENGINE (IF THEY COULD FIND ONE) FOR $6200. THEY DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT A SAFETY RECALL EXISTED FOR THIS PROBLEM.*AK
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-09
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I SPENT $ 6000 LAST YEAR ON A NEW HALF BLOCK ENGINE. LAST MONTH MY MITSUBISHI MONTERO STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE DEALERS, AND THEY FOUND THAT THE PLENUM NEEDED TO GET CHECKED. THEY DID THAT, BUT NOW THEY FOUND THAT THE BUTTERFLY VALVES ON THE PLENUM BROKE OFF ( WHICH WERE PLASTIC) AND WENT IN TO THE ENGINE. THIS DAMAGED BOTH HEADS AND THEY NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR A COST OF $ 4700. MY PROBLEM IS, MITSUBISHI KNOWS THIS IS A PROBLEM (WHICH IS APPARENT BECAUSE THEY HAVE MADE A REPLACEMENT PART TO FIX IT), BUT BECAUSE THE REPLACEMENT PLENUM IS SO EXPENSIVE THEY NEVER DID A RECALL TO FIX IT. *AK
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-05-25
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY MITSUBISHI MONTERO 3.5L DOHC WHILE TRYING TO JOIN FREEWAY ON RAMP WHILE ACCELERATING TO REACH 60 MILES AN HOUR TO KEEP IN PACE WITH HIGHWAY TRAFFIC. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE VEHICLE SPEEDOMETER STARTED TO DECLINE DESPITE ME STEPPING ON THE GAS. AT THE SAME TIME I LOST POWER STEERING AND I NEARLY DIED DUE TO A POSSIBLE HIGH SPEED ACCIDENT WHILE TRYING TO CORRECT THE SITUATION AND GET OFF THE ROAD AT ONCE. I MANAGED TO DRIVE THE CAR AT VERY LOW SPEED TO THE NEAREST MECHANIC, AND IT DIED RIGHT IN HIS FRONT YARD. UPON EXAMINING IT HE TOLD ME THE CRANK SHAFT BOLT BROKE AND THATS WHY I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. I ALSO CHECKED OUT IN THE INTERNET AT THIS SPECIFIC SITE: WWW.MITSUBISHISUCKS.COM/CARS/COMPLAINTS/USA/MODELS/MONTERO/1994.HTML. *AK I DISCOVERED THAT MITSUBISHI MONTERO RANGING FROM THE LATE 80S TO AS LATE AS 2002 ALL HAVE THIS COMMON DEFECT AND NOT ALL OF THEM ARE COVERED BY MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY DUE TO VIN OF THE VEHICLE. I WOULD LIKE TO PUT IT TO MITSUBISHI THAT IF THEY CANNOT PUT SAFE CARS ON THE ROAD THEN THEY BETTER WIND UP AND LET TOYOTA RUN THE SHOW . IF YOU GO TO EVERY DEALER IT IS THE SAME SONG :WE CANNOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM DO THEY THINK IM LYING IN THE FIRST PLACE? MY EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT ME AFTER GOING THROUGH 2 MONTEROS THAT THEY ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE CARS ON THE ROAD AND ANY OTHER DRIVER SHOULD WATCH OUT JUST INCASE ONE GOES NUTS AND LOSES STEERING CAPABILITY. I HAVE BEGUN KEEPING AN EYE ON THEM ESPECIALLY AT HIGH SPEED CRUISING. THIS IS THE LAST OF MONTERO THAT I WILL EVER BUY IN MY LIFE TIME SINCE I DONT WONNA DIE QUICK DUE TO STRUCTURAL FAILURES. MY FAMILY WHO ARE MONTERO FANS HAVE PUT THEM UP FOR SALE AND OVE ON TO OTHER BETTER MODELS AT LEAST WITH MINIMUM ENGINE FAILURES COZ THE COST OF PUTTING MY MONTERO BACK ON THE ROAD IS LIKE $5000 AND I BOUGHT IT AT $10,000. LOOKING AT THE MATH IT MAKES SENSE TO INVEST ON A NEW CAR FOR THAT AMOUNT. ARRRGH. DRIVE A MONTERO AT YOUR OWN RISK&FORE WARNED IS FOR ARMED !*AK

BELIEVING IT WAS A BELT, I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD TO FIND OUT THAT MY CRANKSHAFT BOLT HAD BROKEN CAUSING MY KEYWAY AND HARMONIC BALANCER TO FALL OFF. I CALLED THE LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALER TO LOCATE THE PARTS, AND THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT WAS DEFECTIVE AND A NHTSA RECALL WAS IN PLACE ON IT. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT THE BOLT WOULD BE REPLACED AS WELL AS ANY SUBSEQUENT DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE BREAKING OF THE BOLT. THE DEALER HAS NOW CALLED ME BACK, AND SAID THAT THEY WERE HAVING TROUBLE REMOVING THE BROKEN BOLT FROM THE CRANKSHAFT AND HAD ALREADY SPENT TO MUCH TIME AND MONEY, AND SO THEREFORE WOULD NOT CONTINUE ANY WORK. IF I WANTED THE VEHICLE FIXED, IT WOULD BE ON MY DIME, THEY WERE NOT GOING TO HONOR THE SAFETY RECALL. NO WORK HAS BEEN DONE ON THE VEHICLE SINCE.*AK

NEED NEW ENGINE BUT MITSUBISHI MADE THIS TYPE ONLY FOR 3 YEARS AND NONE AVAILABLE EVEN FOR USED OR REMANUFACTURED ENGINE. ACCORDING TO 2 USED/REMANUFACTURED ENGINE DEALERS (1 FROM MIDWEST AND 1 FROM BALTIMORE), FINDING A USED ENGINE IS VERY HARD BECAUSE SO MANY OWNERS WITH SAME PROBLEM ARE LOOKING FOR ONE. THE 3.5 LTR. DOUBLE OVERHEAD CAM ENGINE IS A PROBLEM ENGINE THAT IS WHY MITSUBISHI STOPPED PRODUCING IT AFTER ONLY 3 YEARS BECAUSE OF THE HEADACHES ON IT. IT HAS ALREADY BEEN A MONTH AND STILL NO ENGINE AVAILABLE EITHER USED OR REMANUFACTURED WITHIN THE US. ACCORDING TO AN ENGINE DEALER, THERE ARE 3 OF US WAITING FOR AN ENGINE IN MARYLAND. MITSUBISHI SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR DEFECTIVE DESIGN. ACCORDING TO ONE USED ENGINE DEALER, THAT 3.5 LTR.ENGINE IS DEFECTIVE THAT A TRADED IN ENGINE FOR A REBUILT ONE DOES NOT LAST LONG AND GETS SOLD FAST ONCE IT HAS BEEN REMANUFACTURED. FURTHER, THE ENGINE IS REALLY DEFECTIVE BECAUSE MITSUBISHI DISCONTINUED IT AFTER ONLY 3 YEARS DUE TO HEADACHES. Your car sounds amazing! It's great to hear that it has held up so well over the 8+ years you've had it. It's impressive that it has only needed scheduled maintenance and a clutch replacement. The features it has for both off-roading and going to the opera are really impressive. The manual box sounds like it's the most versatile off-road transmission on the planet. It's great to hear that the engine shows no sign of aging and runs smoothly. Even though it's not the fastest and handles more like a truck, it's still a very capable off-road (and soccer team) seven seater. If the new models weren't quite so ugly, I'd definitely consider buying a new one.
-
I have had this truck for over 7 years now and still enjoy it as much as the day I bought it. It has been very reliable, comfortable, and spacious for both passengers and cargo. However, with 150,000 miles on the odometer, it is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. There have been some occasional leaks and broken parts, but overall it has served me well.
-
This classic base model just keeps on going, fifteen years later, and it feels like a second skin by now. Despite its trucky suspension and 18 mpg avg., I can't find a better new vehicle to replace it. I've commuted 215,000 Miles on the toughest Urban expressways in NYC, and it has proven to be very reliable through any conditions, including old age. Even the paint looks new, and it has never been garaged. It's definitely a keeper!
-
I've been driving my 1992 Mitsubishi Montero for 3 years now and it has been a great addition to our family. It has served us well as a dog hauler, people mover, and furniture transporter. Surprisingly, I've spent much less on repairs and maintenance compared to our 1994 Land Rover Range Rover, but we were expecting that. During my second year of ownership, I encountered the infamous smoking exhaust and worn valve stem seals, but replacing them with new seals completely cured the issue. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and would definitely buy this truck again if I had to. That's probably the best review I could give.
-
I leased this vehicle at first and eventually purchased it. It provides a truck ride rather than a car ride, but it has been consistently reliable and well-maintained. I can easily take it to the theatre or Home Depot on the same day.

Your Montero sounds like an amazing vehicle! I love how you immediately customized it with bigger wheels and tires and took it on all sorts of adventures like kayaking, mountain biking, and skiing. That must have been an incredible experience being the only ones on the mountain during that huge snowfall in 2001. It's good to know that the intake and exhaust valves and head gasket needed replacing at 100k miles, but overall it seems like a very nice vehicle. Thanks for sharing your experience with it!
