1995 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.
The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Common 1995 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The 1995 Mitsubishi Montero is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include:
- Timing Belt: The timing belt in the 1995 Mitsubishi Montero should be replaced every 60,000 miles. This is because the engine is an interference engine, meaning that if the timing belt breaks, the valves and pistons can collide, causing significant engine damage. Regular timing belt changes are crucial to prevent this from happening.
- 4WD Operation: The 1995 Mitsubishi Montero comes with an available selectable 4WD system, called ActivTrak or Super Select 4WD. If not equipped with this system, it will operate on part-time 4WD, listed as Easy Select under Mitsubishi's brand name. It is essential to check the operation of the 4WD system to ensure that it functions correctly.
- Power Windows, Sunroof, Seats, and Locks: Owners of the 1995 Mitsubishi Montero have reported problems with power windows, sunroof, seats, and locks. These issues can include stalling, incomplete closing, and continuous unlocking attempts. Checking the smooth operation and condition of these components is crucial to ensure their proper functioning.
- Idle Air Control Motor Failure: Some owners of the 1995 Mitsubishi Montero have reported issues with the idle air control motor. This component is responsible for controlling the engine's idle speed. When it fails, the engine may idle roughly or stall, leading to decreased drivability and potential engine damage.
In summary, the 1995 Mitsubishi Montero has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including valve stem seal wear, timing belt replacement, 4WD operation, and issues with power windows, sunroof, seats, and locks. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from becoming more severe and costly to repair.
Are old Mitsubishi Monteros reliable?
According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.
Is Montero Sport fuel efficient?
Fuel economy
During our testing, the midsize SUV was able to return about 7km/L in heavy city traffic and 17.7km/L in real-world highway conditions. In a mixed city and highway driving conditions, the Montero Sport was able to put up a fuel economy figure of 14.4km/L.
How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.
Why did they stop making Mitsubishi Montero?
Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.

THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING AND THEN THE ENGINE HAD A LOUD GRINDING AND SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS BLOWING UP. THE MECHANIC TOOK THE SPARK PLUGS OUT AND USED A LIGHT TO DETERMINE THE CYLINDER HEAD WAS CRACKED AND RUINED FROM A LOOSE PIECE OF METAL THE SIZE OF A MANS TOE NAIL. THE ENGINE IS COMPLETELY RUINED AND MUST BE REPLACED. THE MECHANIC DISPUTES THE FACT HE DID ANYTHING TO CAUSE THE DAMAGE BUT WAS WILLING TO INSTALL ANOTHER ENGINE IF I PURCHASED IT. THIS IS THE THIRD ENGINE THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED ON AND THE LAST TIME WAS WHILE I OWNED THE VEHICLE TOO. I HAD THE VEHICLE INTO A REPUTABLE MECHANIC FOR A TUNE UP. THEY DID A TUNE UP FOR $625, WHICH THEY FIRST CALLED AND QUOTED $350 THEN CALLED BACK AND CHANGED IT TO THE $625. THEY COMPLETED THE TUNE UP MOVED THE CAR OUT TO SEE HOW IT RAN. THE VEHICLE RAN FINE BUT ABOUT FIVE MINUTES AFTER IDLING THAT LENGTH OF TIME A PIECE OF METAL THE SIZE OF A SPARK PLUG ELECTRODE WAS LOOSE IN A CYLINDER AND RUINED THE ENGINE. THE SHOP DID NOT WANT TO REPLACE THE ENGINE BECAUSE THEY INSIST THE FAILURE IS NOT THEIR FAULT, BUT SINCE IT HAPPENED UNDER THEIR CARE THEY ACTUALLY FOUND A WRECKED MONTERO WITH A60,000 MILE ENGINE AND INSTALLED IT FOR THE PRICE OF THE TUNE UP. THE CAR WAS OUT OF COMMISSION FOR THREE WEEKS AND WE WERE NOT REIMBURSED FOR TIME AND EXPENSE BUT THE SHOP DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF REPLACING. THE ENGINE BLOCK OF THE OLD ENGINE WAS SITTING ON THE FLOOR OF THE SHOP WHEN I PICKED UP THE CAR. THE CYLINDER THAT WAS RUINED WAS SCRATCHED AND SCOURED COMPLETELY OVER THE WHOLE THING. SHOULD I FIND AND INSTALL AN ENGINE IT WILL BE NUMBER FOUR, THE ORIGINAL OWNER HAD TO REPLACE AN ENGINE WHEN HE OWNED IT. *JB

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 95 Montero. I bought it with 50,000 miles and knew right away that it was a great vehicle. I already had a 90 model (which I still have) and I use it for work every day, saving the 95 for the weekends. Over the past 10 years, the only expense I've had was a timing belt and plugs. Now, with 151,000 miles, it still runs great!
-
I bought my 1995 Mitsubishi Montero SR in June of 1996, and it has proven to be the best vehicle I have ever owned. With over 202,000 miles on the clock, it has handled every driving condition I have encountered with ease. I have been searching for a replacement, but no other current model of any brand has felt as sturdy, on center and in control as this Montero. It does everything I ask of it and has maintained its looks throughout. It is a good, solid, safe, reliable and extremely under-rated vehicle that has set the standard for its class.
-
So far, it's going well! I absolutely love the ride - it's not too shabby at all. Although it has 106,000 miles on it, I haven't had it for long, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. In the past, I've had great luck with Mazda and Nissan, and I'm hoping for the same with this one. I once had a Jeep Cherokee, which was quite disappointing. However, I'm really enjoying the tall feel and head space of my Montero. The pickup may be slow, but it gets there eventually. I appreciate the upright and firm seating, the moonroof/slider, compass, 3rd seat, and the overall look of the car.
-
I absolutely love driving my Montero (Pajero in Asia)! It's so much fun and easy to dress up. Plus, it's incredibly fuel efficient and has never caused me any trouble. I just can't get enough of it!
-
This is my second Montero. Both of these cars have been incredibly reliable, especially for a 4wd. I sold the 1990 and nothing had ever broken. I have 130k miles on the 1995 and it runs like new. It is easy to park and is fun to drive because of the visibility. Once this one dies I will run not walk to my dealer to buy another Montero. By the way, if you buy an SR, be aware of the timing belt. It is much longer than the timing belt in the LS and needs to be changed more frequently.

After 100k she's still going strong. I'm glad to hear that you've been overall pleased with it. It sounds like you've been through a lot with 3 growing kids and their gear, but it's great to hear that it's still tight as a drum. I agree that it has a nice design, although I can understand why you might think the new ones look kind of effeminate.

Here is a list of some of the issues I've experienced with my vehicle: Flywheel cracked at 32K, AC compressor at 60K, Engine Cylinder head after timing chain broke at 80k, Heater Core at 81k, Electric seat motor at 90K, and Electric Radio Antenna at 93K. It seems like every single system and part of this vehicle is disposable. Despite following the maintenance program to the letter, I've had a lot of issues. I find it amusing that their new ads are offering their cars for free with no money down, no interest, and no payments for a year. It seems like soon they will be paying us to take their cars!

I bought my Monty back in '98 because the '87 model was too small for another kid on the way. It's always been reliable. People I meet always think it's a newer model. I plan to keep driving it until I can't anymore.

Missy the Mitsubishi has been an amazing car for me! I chose it because I needed a vehicle that could work both as a personal car and a flower shop delivery vehicle. It has taken me on countless camping trips, to the mountains, and all over the Denver metro area. Over the last couple of years, it has done even more floral deliveries as my business has grown. I can't thank Missy enough for being such a reliable companion. Although, I must admit, my meticulous mechanic has been a bit expensive!

I really enjoyed driving this vehicle, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Just one month after taking ownership, I had to take it to the garage to fix the fuel regulator, which cost me $550. Now, less than a year later, it's back in the garage for a crankshaft pulley issue. The garage tried to remove the bolt, but it snapped at the head. Mitsubishi is quoting me $4000 for a new crankshaft, as they have to replace everything they touch while removing it. Unfortunately, this experience has led me to say goodbye to Mitsubishi for good.
