2008 Volvo Xc70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2008 Volvo Xc70 problems

The Volvo XC70, produced from 1999 to 2016, is known for its solid build and reliability, making it a popular choice for families. However, some model years and components have been reported to cause issues more frequently than others. This article will focus on common problems with the 2008 Volvo XC70, based on complaints from owners.

Transmission Issues

One of the most commonly reported problems with the Volvo XC70, including the 2008 model, is transmission failure. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 2003 model year, but it can also affect other years. Drivers have reported rear-wheel drive failure at an average mileage of 108,000 miles. Affected vehicles often require a complete transmission rebuild rather than a replacement to prevent recurrence.

The 2008 Volvo XC70, in particular, is known for its six-speed automatic transmission, which can be challenging to control during gear shifts. This transmission tends to shift harshly when it becomes too hot, and in some cases, it may slip between gears, posing safety risks. Erroneous software, faulty shift solenoids, or a bad valve body can cause these issues, leading to costly repairs or replacements.

Control Arm Bushing Wear

Another common problem with the 2008 Volvo XC70 is the premature wear of front control arm bushings. These bushings protect the control arms from friction and heat, preventing damage to suspension parts. When the bushings wear out, they can produce knocking or squeaking sounds, and they may also cause wheel misalignment, leading to uneven tire wear. Replacing the worn bushings typically resolves this issue.

Transmission Shifting Problems

Some drivers have reported transmission shifting problems with the 2008 Volvo XC70, including delayed shifting, harsh shifting, or complete transmission failure. These issues have been reported in the 2003-2008 and 2010-2012 model years, in addition to the 2012 model year, which has received a significant number of complaints about shifting-related problems.

In summary, the 2008 Volvo XC70 has been reported to have issues with its automatic transmission, including slipping, harsh shifting, and delayed shifting. Additionally, premature wear of front control arm bushings can lead to noise and wheel misalignment. While the Volvo XC70 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, these issues can lead to costly repairs or replacements.

STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-25
  • VIN: YV4BZ982581
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I have noticed water leaking into the inside of my windshield and also noticed that the front and rear carpets are damp and the car is developing a musty smell. Upon closer inspection it appears that the top of the windshield is unbonded from the frame and moves outward when pressure is applied against it. This is a serious safety concern as the windshield is a structural component of the vehicle and the integrity of the vehicle with an unbonded windshield compromises the vehicle safety. Beyond that structural concern, the inside windshield fogs us consistently causing impaired visibility while driving, especially in the rain.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-29
  • VIN: YV4BZ982381
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: 1. Low beam headlights failed - both at the same time, resulting in high beam only driving at night. Units available for inspection. 2. Yes. No low beam headlights. Upon inspection of wiring, during replacement of low beams, headlight wiring insulation found to be flaking off, exposing bare wiring. 3. Unknown. Found no information in Google search. Plenty of information on others having same issue, in Volvo forums online. Last search regarding this problem brought me to NHTSA website, to look on a recall about this issue, then to this form submission. 4. No. This is the first time I've been exposed to the problem. This is the first case personally, where a vehicle has suffered a loss of both low beam headlights simultaneously. The wiring issue was found when I pulled out the old bulbs for replacement. 5. No. My wife informed me that the low beams stopped working on her car. There was an indicator on the instrument panel indicating "low beam failure." Strangely, I found both low beams to be burned out.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-01
  • VIN: YV4BZ982981
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: HAVE HAD MULTIPLE OVERHEATING INCIDENTS WHILE DRIVING, WHICH COINCIDED WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER STOPPING WORKING. I THINK LEARNED OF VOLVO RECALL #09V218000 WHICH DESCRIBES EXACTLY THE FAILURE I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING. I CONTACTED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE, BUT THEY CLAIM THAT MY VIN DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE VEHICLES RECALLED. THE REFERENCED ABOVE WAS FOR 17,614 2008-2009 XC70, S80, AND V70 VEHICLES. EVIDENTLY WAS RELATED TO A SOFTWARE PROGRAMMING ERROR IN THE FAN CONTROL MODULE, AND THE DEFECT CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS SUPPOSED TO BE REPLACING THE FCM. VOLVO TOLD ME THAT THEY WILL NOT ASSIST WITH THIS EFFORT, EVEN THOUGH IT'S A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE EFFECTED BY THE RECALL, BUT APPARENTLY NOT MY SPECIFIC VIN. ANY ASSISTANCE IN GETTING ADDITIONAL VINS ADDED TO THIS RECALL WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-07
  • VIN: YV4BZ982381
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: PRIOR TO A 165 MILE ROAD TRIP THE FUEL GAUGE READ 1/4 TANK - 120 MILES TO EMPTY. I FILLED THE TANK TO FULL BEFORE HEADING OUT. AFTER REFUELING, I CLOSED THE GAS CAP BUT FORGOT TO SHUT THE FUEL DOOR. THE FUEL DOOR OPEN ERROR LIGHT CAME ON AND THE FUEL GAUGE STILL READ 1/4 TANK - 120 MILES TO EMPTY. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF ROAD AND WITH THE VEHICLE RUNNING SHUT THE FUEL DOOR. THE FUEL DOOR OPEN ERROR LIGHT WAS STILL LIT AND THE FUEL GAUGE DID NOT CHANGE. I DROVE TOWARDS HOME ON WINDING MOUNTAIN ROADS IN HIGH SPEED L.A. TRAFFIC. THE INDICATOR READ 50 MILES TO EMPTY AND THE LOW FUEL INDICATOR CAME ON EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS STILL 3/4 OF A TANK OF GAS. AT THE APPROXIMATELY 120 MILE MARK WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH IN 5 LANES OF FAST-MOVING L.A. TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE STOPPED. I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OVER THROUGH 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND STOP SAFELY ON THE FREEWAY SHOULDER. THE VEHICLE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED THE TANK WAS EMPTY AND THE FUEL DOOR OPEN INDICATOR REMAINED ON EVEN THOUGH I HAD CLOSED THE DOOR. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND I HAD IT TOWED TO THE MECHANIC WHO ROUTINELY SERVICES IT. I AM WAITING TO HEAR THE RESULT OF THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED IF THE VEHICLE HAD STOPPED ON THE WINDING MOUNTAIN ROADS WITH NO SHOULDERS AND NO WAY FOR ME TO SAFELY EXIT THE FREEWAY. AT NO TIME DID ANY OTHER VEHICLE WARNINGS DISPLAY OTHER THAN FUEL DOOR OPEN. I PURCHASED A VOLVO FOR ITS IMPECCABLE SAFETY RECORD. THIS INCIDENT CERTAINLY DOES NOT LIVE UP TO THE STELLAR VOLVO REPUTATION. I HAD NO IDEA THAT DRIVING WITH THE FUEL DOOR OPEN ERROR DISPLAYED COULD RESULT IN THE VEHICLE STOPPING ON THE HIGHWAY EVEN THOUGH THE GAS TANK REALLY WAS 3/4 FULL AND NOT EMPTY AS THE FUEL GAUGE INDICATED. THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY BE RECALLED AND OTHER DRIVERS MADE AWARE OF THE SAFETY ISSUE ASSOCIATED WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A MINOR NUISANCE BUT IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN ULTIMATELY.

WHEN ASKED HOW VOLVO ISSUED THE RECALLS, VOLVO STATED BASED ON THE VIN NUMBERS, WHEN I AGAIN ASKED WHAT RIM SIZE AND TIRE SIZE BASED ON MY VIN NUMBER IS MY VEHICLE TO HAVE ON IT, VOLVO DID NOT KNOW. I QUESTIONED VOLVO ABOUT THE TIRE PRESSURE LABEL AND ASKED WHY THE NEW RECALLED LABEL WOULD BE 36 PSI AND THE PRESSURE VOLVO IS STATING IS 38 PSI VOLVO HAD NO IDEA WHY IT WOULD NOT BE 38 PSI FOR TIRE PRESSURE. AS DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIZED/LOAD/SPEED TIRE CAN CAUSE INJURY AND DEATH. AS DRIVING ON THE WRONG SIZED/LOAD/SPEED TIRE CAN CAUSE ALL KINDS OF VEHICLE DAMAGE. PLEASE FURTHER CORRECT THE RECALL TO INCLUDE ALL MAKE AND MODEL YEARS. I HAVE CANNOT GET MY VEHICLE PROPERLY SERVICED EVEN BY TRAINED SERVICE TECHNICIAN WITHOUT THIS INFORMATION. VOLVO DOES TO KNOW WHICH TIRE GOES ON MY CAR BASED ON MY VIN NUMBER. MY VEHICLE DOES HAVE THE LABEL BUT IS MISSING INFORMATION.

Negative 2008 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Horace Kautzer 2024-11-02

I enjoyed driving the car, but unfortunately it had several issues and even Volvo was unable to fix it, resulting in a refund after 15 months. Despite the problems, I still appreciated the experience of driving it.

  2. Isaias Hudson 2024-10-03

I leased a Volvo for 2 years and 12K miles with the promise of a 6-month extension. However, at the end of the lease, Volvo and the dealer refused to honor the original agreement. They offered a $29K buyout, which I believe is too high. Unfortunately, this experience has left me disillusioned with Volvo. In the past, I owned a 2000 V70XC-SE and a prior 240 DL, both of which experienced major system failures after 90K miles, resulting in high maintenance costs. The 2008 model I leased had disappointing performance and mileage, and the BLIS and ultrasonic sensors did not work in the rain or snow. Additionally, any load in the rear caused the springs to bottom out. I recommend checking the cost of Xenon headlight replacement before making a purchase.

We purchased this car in April, but unfortunately, I experienced some transmission quirks that made me uncomfortable. The car seemed to hunt incessantly from gear to gear, and I never felt confident while driving it. Additionally, the gas mileage was not as good as we expected. Despite my concerns, the dealer kept telling me that it was just an 'adaptive' transmission and that it would smooth out after the break-in period. However, after four months, the gas mileage was still under 20 mpg, and I decided to sell the car on Craigslist, claiming that we were moving. We ended up purchasing an Audi A4, which has been a night and day difference from the Volvo. While the Volvo may have been disappointing, I'm sure it will find a happy new owner.

I have had the pleasure of owning three Volvo's over the last 10 years, always leasing them for 4 years and then getting another one. Unfortunately, my experience with this 2008 XC70 has not been as positive. On the day I received it, one of the radiators sprung a leak and I was forced to get it serviced on a Saturday. Additionally, the sales rep did not include an owner's manual or the Volvo hotline. Since then, I have had to replace the floating panel and the windows do not go up and down properly. When I took the car in at 82,000Km to get the last warranty work done (I was late by 2K), I was informed that it had to be under 80,000KM. Despite my 10-year history with the company, I was not granted any reverse loyalty. I am looking forward to the end of my lease in Jul12.

This is our first wagon, although we've had Volvo sedans before. I must say, it's a tank! I can't imagine a sturdier, more substantial vehicle. It's outstanding in rain and you're 100% confident in matters of traction and handling all the time. Overall, it's amazingly comfortable. However, I have had some issues with a perpetual rattle in the cargo area. I had it serviced, but the fix lasted only one day. I'm going back in again soon. As for the mileage, I had to shut off the display so I wouldn't cry- -long stretches on local roads at 6MPG. I probably average 16MPG overall. Would I recommend it? Yes, but think hard if you're mostly puttering around town because of the mileage.

Positive 2008 Volvo Xc70 car reviews

  1. Cooper Goyette 2024-11-13

The vehicle is incredibly comfortable to drive. The leather seats with the seat warmers are fantastic, and there's plenty of legroom. I absolutely love driving my car!

  2. Edgar Herman 2024-10-05

Congratulations on your new Volvo XC70! It sounds like you made a great choice after shopping around for luxury SUVs. The XC70 offers a comfortable ride, great responsiveness, and impressive safety features. The build quality and interior appointments are top-notch, making it a pleasure to drive. It's wonderful to hear that you've found the perfect size for your needs. The acceleration and handling are more than adequate and even better than what the experts have rated. Enjoy your new ride!

  3. Roberto Stracke 2024-10-01

I'm glad to hear that you've had an excellent experience with this vehicle! It sounds like it handles snow like a champ, even better than the Subaru all-wheel drive system. While it may be slightly underpowered off the line, it has plenty of torque to pass on tough Colorado mountain passes at 55 miles per hour and above. The interior design and quality are excellent, and the seats are everything you expect from a Volvo. It's great to hear that they wholeheartedly live up to their expectation. The only issues you've experienced have been a few rattles and squeaks, as well as a defective speaker, but it's great that the dealer was able to solve those problems for you.

  4. Enrique Padberg 2024-09-15

We've had this car for almost two years and we absolutely love it! It's perfect for our family's needs and my wife enjoys driving it every day. The car feels incredibly solid and well-made, which is something we really appreciate. The front seats are hands down the most comfortable we've ever experienced, especially on long road trips. We take frequent trips to the ski slopes and the AWD system makes this Volvo unstoppable. The boxy interior design is incredibly efficient and allows us to haul all sorts of things. It's truly a 'does it all' vehicle. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient or sporty car out there, it's definitely luxurious and that's why we're excited to lease another one when our current lease ends.

  5. Ernie Becker 2024-08-29

I've owned my Volvo XC 70 for nine years now, and it still feels like a brand new car! Although the mileage is low, I did have some trouble with the motherboard a few years back, but it was quickly replaced. Unfortunately, since I had owned the car for more than 5 years, it was out of warranty. Despite that, I absolutely love my car! ❤️
