1998 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.
The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Are old Mitsubishi Monteros reliable?
According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.
How much is a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero?
The value of a used 1998 Mitsubishi Montero ranges from $435 to $1,998, based on vehicle condition, mileage, and options.
How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.
Why did they stop making Mitsubishi Montero?
Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.

1998 Mitsubishi Montero recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1998 Mitsubishi Montero.
- Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 1998-2000 Montero vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 25, 2021. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-001.

- Consequence: THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD.
- Remedy: MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN WILL MAIL A CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION LETTER CONTAINING A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION AND A GRAPHIC OF THE BI-LINGUAL DASHBOARD AIR BAG WARNING LABEL. IN ADDITION, ALL CURRENT 2000-2004 NATIVA OWNERS WILL ALSO RECEIVE REPLACEMENT AIR BAG ALERT LABELS FOR THE SUN VISORS. THIS RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH OR APRIL 2005. THE NOTIFICATION TO THE NATIVA OWNERS IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL OR MAY 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN AT 1-787-251-8715.

Negative 1998 Mitsubishi Montero car reviews
Positive 1998 Mitsubishi Montero car reviews
-
I've owned my Montero for almost 4 years and I still love it! I take it everywhere: in the snow, sand, mountains, and on long road trips (2,000 miles+). Never had a problem, with proper care it will last another 30 years. The strength of the Montero is better than anything I have seen. Almost impossible to damage.
-
It's great to hear that you're interested in a body-on-frame SUV! This one is perfect for true off-roading, and it's also okay for highway driving.
-
This SUV is fantastic! I absolutely love it. It outperforms any other SUV on the road, even though it's 5 years old. I am extremely happy and satisfied with my SUV - it's a dream come true for me. It's a great vehicle!
-
I have to say, I was a bit hesitant about purchasing this SUV at first due to some negative reviews in previous years. However, I noticed that it had undergone some major improvements and the price was just right, so I decided to go for it. And I must say, I have definitely gotten my money's worth from this car! As someone who does a lot of hunting, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it handled off-road. The 4WD on the fly was particularly impressive. Additionally, the flexibility of the back seats has been a huge plus for me.
-
There are many SUVs out there that claim to be great off-roaders, but this truck truly delivers. It has won the Dakar Rally multiple times, which is a testament to its capabilities. If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle tough terrain, this truck is a great option. Of course, if you're not planning on using it for off-roading, there are plenty of other SUVs that might be a better fit. While it may not be the most attractive truck on the market, it is incredibly practical and durable. The drivetrain linkage is top-notch, and I've been able to navigate some very challenging situations in this truck that I don't think many SUVs could handle. Ultimately, it's important to be honest about your needs and intentions when choosing a vehicle.

This is a great looking SUV with lots of features. However, I have had some trouble with it despite taking good care of it. It has been expensive to repair and maintain, with multiple issues such as alternators, rear door hinges, and batteries. Unfortunately, my experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Montero. It's a cool truck, but reliability is a top priority for me.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Full-size Montero. This is actually the second one I've owned, and I have to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag. My first one, a '95 LS, was unfortunately quite unreliable and expensive to fix. However, I decided to give the Montero another chance and purchased a '97 with the larger 3.5 engine. While the gas mileage wasn't great, I found that it performed well...until it hit around 85,000 miles. Since then, I've had a few mechanical issues, including a blown head gasket, 5 alternators, 3 batteries, a water pump, and camshaft seals. On top of that, some of the electronic features like the mirrors, remote entry, and antenna have stopped working. It's been a bit of a headache, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. Just wanted to share my experience and give you a heads up. Thanks for listening!
