1996 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1996 Honda Civic problems

The Honda Civic, produced in 1996, is known for its reliability and longevity. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain issues. Here are three of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1996 Honda Civic:

  • Bad engine mounts causing vibration, roughness, and rattle: The second most common problem reported by Honda Civic owners is bad engine mounts, which can cause vibration, roughness, and rattling in the vehicle. This issue typically occurs when the car is placed in reverse or drive. The replacement of the engine mount usually resolves the problem.
  • Failure of power window switches: The third most common problem reported by Honda Civic owners is the failure of power window switches. This issue can cause the windows to stop opening or closing, and it is an intermittent problem. Sometimes, a switch will fail for no apparent reason, and then it will mysteriously resolve itself. Some owners have reported that they were able to get the power window switches to work by pressing them with slightly more force than usual. When taking the Civic to an auto service center, it is essential to verify that there is a defective switch and not a broken window motor, as this could save money from unnecessary replacements and repairs.

In summary, the 1996 Honda Civic is a reliable vehicle, but like any other vehicle, it can experience certain issues. The most common problems reported by owners of this model are airbag light illumination due to a failed occupant position sensor, bad engine mounts causing vibration, roughness, and rattle, and failure of power window switches. These issues can be resolved by replacing the defective sensor, replacing the engine mount, and verifying that there is a defective switch and not a broken window motor.

What is the common problem of Honda Civic?

Brakes. Some Civic owners have complained of squealing brakes; Honda is said to be aware of the problem and working on a fix, though it's worth keeping in mind that any Civic you test drive with noisy brakes may not be easy to fix.

How many miles will a 1996 Honda Civic last?

It's not uncommon for a Civic to last upward of 20 years, and you can tack on the miles during that expanse of time. You could get from 200,000 to 300,000 miles with a Honda Civic before it completely breaks down or requires extensive repairs.

What year is bad for Honda Civic?

Models of the Honda Civic from 2001 to 2005, 2007 to 2009, and 2011 are the worst because of the multiple complaints and recall record. The 2001 model had close to 1,228 user complaints just in that year.

What generation is a 1996 Honda Civic?

Sixth-Generation Honda Civic

Sixth-Generation Honda Civic: 1996-2000

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Summary: MY 1996 HONDA CIVIC'S ENGINE TURNS OFF WHILE DRIVING. THERE WAS JUST A RECALL FOR THE NEWER VERSIONS(2016 HONDA CIVICS) FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. I CANNOT FIND ANY RECALLS ONLINE ABOUT 1996 HONDA CIVICS SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING THOUGH. I HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-24
  • VIN: 1HGEJ662OTL
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: PASSENGER SIDE SUB-FRAME IS HEAVILY RUSTED AND BROKEN AT THE BOTTOM. PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL MOVES SIDE TO SIDE WITH EASE. THE CAR HAS BEEN OWNED BY ME FOR TWO YEARS WITH NO ISSUE. I DO NOT AND HAVE NOT USED THE A/C, BUT LIKELY RELATED TO THE A/C DRIP TUBE POINTING DIRECTLY ON THE SUB-FRAME AND RUSTING IT THROUGH. IT'S NOT WORTH REPAIRING BUT COULD POSSIBLE BE REINFORCED WITH A WELD. SELLING DEALER DENIES ANY DEFECT UPON ORIGINAL SALE. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS MAINLY RUST FREE, WHAT WAS LURKING UNDERNEATH WAS DEFINITELY NOT SAFETY INSPECTED BEFORE PUTTING ON THE LOT FOR SALE. AT THE TIME I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, I SAW NO OBVIOUS DAMAGE TO THE PASSENGER SIDE LOWER CONTROL ARM AND SUB-FRAME AREA. I LATER FOUND OUT THE DAMAGE TO BE CONCEALED BY SANDING AND DARK COLORED UNDERCOATING. PRESUMABLY BY THE SCAM DEALER. EVEN THOUGH THE CAR IS AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN IN THE NE, HONDA SHOULD ASSURE THAT CRITICAL PARTS LIKE THIS WILL STAND UP. I CAN'T SAY WHAT WORK HAD BEEN DONE TO THE VEHICLE BEFORE I OWNED IT, OR IF THE VEHICLE WAS GARAGED OR NOT. FROM WHAT I AM READING, THAT DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE THOUGH. HONDA OWNERS, CHECK THIS ITEM. I COULDN'T SEE PUTTING A NEW SUB-FRAME, ALONG WITH STEEP DEALER LABOR PRICES TO CORRECT THIS ISSUE. HONDA AMERICA NEEDS TO STEP UP WITH AN ADMISSION OF FAULT AND A RECALL, IF NOT ONLY TO REINFORCE THOSE FRAMES THAT ARE STRESSED.

I WAS RECENTLY INFORMED BY A HONDA DEALER AS WELL AS I CHECKED AND READ ON LINE THAT HONDA ISSUED A RECALL ON THESE MODELS FOR TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS AS WELL AS THE PAINT CHIPPING OFF IN SEVERAL AREAS. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY KIND OF NOTIFICATION FROM HONDA NOR HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE MY HONDA CHECKED FOR THESE PROBLEMS, ALTHOUGH I HAD MY HONDA SERVICED IN 3 MAJOR PENNSYLVANIA HONDA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS ON A REGULAR BASIS. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-03
  • VIN: 2HGEJ6604TH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ENGINE WILL SUDDENLY DIE. DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ARE GOING 20 MILES OR 60 MILES AN HOUR. I CAN CRANK IT AFTER A FEW MOMENTS AND IT STARTS BACKUP. SOMETIMES IT TAKES SEVERAL TRIES. WHEN DRIVING, IT WILL SOMETIMES JERK SLIGHTLY LIKE IT IS NOT GETTING FUEL. RECENTLY, IT WOULD NOT START I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE IT SUBSEQUENTLY STARTED RIGHT UP. THE HONDA DEALER THOUGHT IT COULD BE MY OLD ALARM SYSTEM SO THEY REMOVED IT. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED INTERMITTENTLY. I TOOK THE CAR BACK. THEY AGAIN PLACED IT ON THE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE AND TOLD ME THERE WERE VARIOUS THINGS WRONG WITH MY OLDER MODEL CAR. HOWEVER, THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS CAUSING IT TO STALL OUT. DEFINITELY IT WAS A FUEL DELIVERY ISSUE SO THEY SAID REPLACING THE FUEL PUMP COULD BE IT. THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP (WITH GENUINE HONDA PARTS) AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS INTERMITTENTLY ALMOST ON A DAILY BASIS. YOU NEVER KNOW IF IT IS GOING TO START OR DIE WHEN DRIVING. I HAVE HAD A NEW BATTERY INSTALLED AND EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF CHECKED. I CANNOT AFFORD TO INVEST ANY MORE MONEY IN MY OLDER MODEL CAR AND WITH THE ENGINE STALLING IT IS, OF COURSE, NOT REALLY SAFE TO DRIVE. HOWEVER, WHEN I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM, I LEARNED THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON HONDA CAR MODELS STARTING WITH 1997 MODELS (MINE IS A 1996) FOR IGNITION PROBLEMS THAT SOUND EXACTLY LIKE THE ONE I AM CURRENTLY HAVING THAT THE DEALER IS NOT ABLE TO IDENTIFY. IS THERE ANYTHING LEFT I CAN DO. THE CAR WILL SOMETIMES START RIGHT UP AND DRIVE WITHOUT ANY PROBLEM AT ALL. IT IS VERY STRANGE. *TR

  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET IN MY 1996 HONDA CIVIC WHEN A 2004 GMC YUKON SUV CAME HURLING AROUND THE CORNER OF AN INTERSECTING STREET AHEAD OF ME. THE DRIVER OF THE YUKON FAILED TO STAY IN HIS LANE AS HE ROUNDED THE CORNER AND HIT MY HONDA CIVIC HEAD-ON. UPON IMPACT MY HEAD HIT THE WINDSHIELD SO HARD THAT IT LEFT A BUBBLE PROTRUDING OUT ON THE DRIVER SIDE OF MY WINDSHIELD. IN THE SHAPE OF MY HEAD ( I HAVE PHOTOS OF WINDSHIELD DAMAGE) RIGHT BEFORE THE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I WAS ALSO WEARING A SEAT BELT WITH SHOULDER RESTRAINT. AS A RESULT OF THE COLLISION I SUSTAINED A BRAIN CONCUSSION. I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT A DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG AND SEAT BELT WITH SHOULDER RESTRAINT WAS DESIGNED TO KEEP MY HEAD OUT OF THE WINDSHIELD IN THE EVENT OF A HEAD-ON COLLISION. EVIDENTLY BOTH THE SEAT BELT AND AIRBAG FAILED TO PROTECT ME FROM HITTING THE WINDSHIELD IN THE COLLISION I WAS IN. (I HAVE A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT AND PRESENTLY AM STILL IN POSSESSION OF MY TOTALED OUT VEHICLE. *TR

  • Summary: UPON INSPECTIONS AT THE TIRE STORE, ALL 4 OF 4 PIRELLI P3000 CINTURATO (P185/65R-14) TIRES ON MY PASSENGER CAR HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT, PER THE TIRE TECHNICIAN. THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED ME A CRACK IN THE RUBBER RUNNING THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE SIDEWALLS, NOT FAR FROM THE TREAD AREA. EVENTUALLY, HE SAID THE TREAD WOULD SEPARATE FROM THE REST OF THE TIRE IF THE TIRE REMAINED IN SERVICE. I HAVE THE ORIGINAL RECEIPT AND REPLACEMENT RECEIPTS. I BELIEVE THE TIRES WERE BEING RETURNED TO THE PIRELLI MANUFACTURER. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-11
  • VIN: 1HGEJ8144TL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: MY 1996 HONDA CIVIC WOULD NOT START ONE MORNING, I HAD INITIALLY THOUGHT IT WAS DUE TO THE CHILLY WEATHER. A WEEK LATER, WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 65+ MPH, ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY CAR STALLED AND THE ENGINE SHUT OFF!!!! AFTER MY CAR FINISHES COASTING ON THE FREEWAY (AND RESIDENTIAL ROAD), I WILL HAVE A LITTLE PROBLEM TRYING TO RESTART MY CAR, BUT IT WILL EVENTUALLY RESTART! I WAS SCARED FOR MY LIFE FOR THE OBVIOUS REASONS (ONE SECOND YOU'RE GOING 65MPH AND THE NEXT, YOUR CAR DIES ON THE FREEWAY WITH CARS SPEEDING BEHIND YOU)!! I FOUND ONLINE THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR CERTAIN HONDAS & ACURAS (1997 TO 2000 MODELS OF ACCORD, CIVIC, PRELUDE, CR-V, AND ODYSSEY AND SOME 1999 ACURA TL SEDANS AND CERTAIN 1997 TO 1999 CL COUPES). THE PROBLEM IS, MY CAR IS A 1996 CIVIC AND IT IS NOW DECEMBER 2010, SO THEREFORE, IT IS NOT COVERED WITH MANUFACTURE!! I'LL BET MY LIFE THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW OF THIS DEFECT WITH THEIR HONDAS BECAUSE #1, THEY PROBABLY WERE NOT THE 1ST OWNER OF THEIR HONDA SO THEY WOULD NOT OF BEEN AWARE OF THE RECALL, AND #2, EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE THE RECALL, I BELIEVE THAT IT IS STILL A LIFE THREATENING ISSUE FOR MYSELF AND FOR ALL OTHER DRIVERS DUE TO THE MANUFACTURES FAULT!!! THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE RESOLVED AND RE-EVALUATED ASAP, AS LIVES ARE AT STAKE!!!! *TR

THE IMPACT LEFT MY CIVIC'S FRONT BUMPER AND UNDERLYING METAL SUPPORT BEAM LYING IN THE INTERSECTION, ALONG WITH THE ANTIFREEZE THAT WAS RAPIDLY DRAINING EVERYWHERE. 1996 Honda Civic recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 17 recalls for different components of the 1996 Honda Civic.

2020-01-17
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 1998 Acura 2.2CL, 1998-1999 Acura 2.3CL, 1998-1999 Acura 3.0CL, 2001 Acura 3.2CL and Acura MDX, 1998-2000 Honda Accord Coupe, Accord Sedan, Civic Sedan, Odyssey and Acura 3.5RL, 1999-2000 Acura 3.2TL, 1996-2000 Civic Coupe, 1997-2000 CR-V, 1997-1998 EV Plus, and 1998-1999 Isuzu Oasis vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag cushion may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver frontal air bag inflator, and replace it if necessary, with an inflator of a different design, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact American Honda's Customer Support & Campaign Center at 1-888-234-2138 or Isuzu customer service at 1-800-255-6727.

Negative 1996 Honda Civic car reviews

Although I don't want to be unfair to Honda, I must say that while it is a great car, there seem to be some issues with this particular year. Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive to fix when problems arise. I have experienced several issues with the A/C unit, undetectable stalling, and poor braking. In fact, less than a year ago, I was involved in a car accident at just 10 km, and it cost over $5000.00 CND to repair, while the other driver only had a cracked back bumper. Despite these issues, I still love this car!

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a '96 Civic EX! It's great to hear that all of the little extras such as power windows, A/C, remote trunk/gas door releases, cruise, etc. are still working great despite the car's age. It's also impressive that there's surprisingly little rust, considering the harsh Canadian winters it has endured. Although you had to change a few things such as the gas tank, fuel lines, a shifter assembly bushing and a CV boot, these are all fairly common things for a car of this age in Canada. It may not have the most power, but it's comfortable, fuel-efficient and looks great. Enjoy your new ride!

This is my second Honda Civic. I can definitely say that it's a very reliable vehicle. I've been driving Civics for 10 years and have never had any mechanical problems!

Positive 1996 Honda Civic car reviews

I was given this car as a gift three years ago when it had only 28,000 kms on it. Since then, I have driven it for 50,000 kms and have only had to change the oil every 5,000 kms, replace the front brakes and tires. I am thoroughly impressed with its reliability and performance. The car is a joy to drive and has a lot of pep for its size. Additionally, I am very impressed with its safety features. Last year, I was in an accident where I hit another car head-on while driving at 80 kmh. Despite the severity of the accident, I did not suffer any injuries and my car was fixable. This experience has made me feel even safer in my car. Overall, I believe that Honda has built a high-quality vehicle with this car.

I recently had to replace my 1998 Chevy Prizm after it was totaled and I found a 1996 Civic EX to take its place. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this car is a significant improvement. Despite being two years older than my previous car, it runs much better, is tighter, and more comfortable for me to drive (at 6'4

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my little Honda Civic. I bought it back in 2002 when I was a sophomore in high school, and it had already clocked 145,000 miles. Fast forward to today, and it's still going strong at 214,000 miles! I've put it through its paces over the past 7 years, covering 70,000 miles, and it's never let me down. Unfortunately, I have to sell it now because it failed inspection, but only for cosmetic reasons. I didn't take care of a bit of rust in one of the wheel wells, and it's taken its toll. At this point, it's smarter to get a new car than to drop $2000 to repair it. I should also mention that I've been in 3 fender benders with this thing, and it's held up like a champ. All I've ever needed to do is routine oil changes. So, if you're in the market for a reliable car, I highly recommend buying a Honda!

I have the midori green hatchback dx model. The car isn't fast by any means but it's really reliable. I like the storage capacity of the hatchback. It's a simple car and because of that simple maintenance will keep this car running for a very long time.

  5. Roman Gibson 2024-10-12

I bought this car new in college in January 1996. It's now February 2003 and I've only had to replace the muffler (due to the harsh Chicago winters). This car is amazing in terms of quality and reliability. It has 159,000 miles on it and I'm confident it will last for another 250,000 miles without any issues. I absolutely love it and plan to keep it for as long as possible. Even with just the occasional wash, it still looks as good as new!
