2000 Mitsubishi Montero problems

The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.

The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.

The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.

The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Common 2000 Mitsubishi Montero problems

The Mitsubishi Montero is a popular SUV, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero, based on owner complaints:

  • Transmission problems: Transmission issues are a common complaint among Montero owners. The symptoms and tendencies of these problems can vary, with some owners reporting that their vehicle switches into neutral and refuses to go back into gear, while others experience engine surging or delayed shifts. Leaking transmission fluid can cause the transmission to malfunction, and fixes for these issues aren't well documented.
  • Electrical component malfunctions: The 2001 Montero has several issues with certain electrical components malfunctioning. These include instances where the horn honks even when the vehicle is parked, or the alarm activates and refuses to deactivate until the battery is disconnected. A worn-out metal ring inside the airbag housing, which acts as a switch when the horn is pressed, can cause these issues. Removing the horn's fuse can solve the problem, but it will also remove the horn.
  • Valve stem seal issues: Valve stem seals are the Achilles heel of the Montero, especially in the 2000 model. These seals wear out and cause the engine to burn oil like crazy. Replacing them is a big job that requires hours of labor, but it's necessary to prevent further damage to the engine .
  • Faulty gauges: The gauges in the 2000 Montero, including the fuel gauge and temperature gauge, can be faulty and read incorrectly. This can be caused by a bad resistor, which can be replaced to fix the issue .
  • Four-wheel drive actuator problems: The four-wheel drive actuator, which controls the four-wheel drive system, can fail and cause the four-wheel drive lights to flash. This can result in shifting issues with the transfer case and front differential. Replacing the actuator with an OEM replacement is the best way to fix this issue .
  • O2 sensor issues: The O2 sensors, which monitor the catalytic converters, can go bad and throw a catalytic converter code. Replacing them with high-quality sensors is necessary to ensure proper monitoring of the catalytic converters. In some cases, a faulty O2 sensor can cause the catalytic converter to fail, which is a costly repair .

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Mitsubishi Montero owners. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it's important to have them addressed by a qualified mechanic to prevent further damage to your vehicle.

Are old Mitsubishi Monteros reliable?

According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.

How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?

I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.

Why was Montero discontinued?

Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.

What is the mileage of Mitsubishi Montero?

11.5 kmpl

Mitsubishi Montero mileage is 11.5 kmpl.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-21
  • VIN: JA4MR51R4YJ
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Awhile back my horn stopped working as if it was stuck down. I found out this was because of a problem with this cars airbag breaking down that causes this - and that there is a recall because these airbags are dangerous if they go off. I received a letter at one point from Mitsubishi about this. I filled out a form a long time ago when I got that, I also emailed them before, I also have tried calling them a few times. They never get back to me. There is no Mitsubishi dealership in my town so I cannot take the car there unannounced without driving 2 hours to another town. I do not want to do this if the airbags are unsafe, so the car has been sitting for a long time because of this issue. I want it resolved. I do not care if Mitsubishi or a mechanic or whoever does it, I just need it done so I do not get killed by my airbag, I don't want to pay for it since it is covered by recall. Please let me know how to resolve this. Thank you.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2001-01-01
  • VIN: JA4LS31H5YP
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED TWICE BY MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP MECHANICS. FIRST TIME BY "COURTESY MITSUBISHI" ON STEVENS CREEK BLVD., SAN JOSE CA. THE SECOND ATTEMPT TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED WAS AGAIN AT COURTESY MITSU WITH NO COOPERATION FROM THE SERVICE DEPT. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE ERATIC STEERING AND THE LOW GRUMBLING SOUND WAS EMINATING FROM THE FRONT TIRES. AND THEY FURTHER CLAIMED THAT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM DUE TO "TREAD SEPARATION" ON THE FRONT TIRES. THIS WAS CONFIRMED AT A LATER DATE TO BE FALSE AS I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A YOKOHAMA DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE OWNER INSPECT THE TIRES. HE FOUND NO DEFECTS. I HAD THE TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED TO ELIMINATE ANY DOUBT AS TO THE TIRES CONDITION. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO PROGRESSIVELY GET WORSE. LOUD CLUNKING NOISES, WHEEL BEARING GROWL, AND EXTREMELY ERRATIC STEERING BEHAVIOR AT ALL SPEEDS. I AM NOT ABLE TO TAKE MY FAMILY OUT ON THE FREEWAY IN THIS VEHICLE AS I AM AFRAID FOR THEIR SAFETY. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER, LARGER DEALER, "CAPITOL MITSUBISHI". THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR 48 HRS AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS WERE INDEED LOOSE AGAIN. HOWEVER THEY REFUSED TO ADMIT THAT THERE WAS ANY OTHER PROBLEM AND ONLY RETIGHTENED THE BEARINGS ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE MANAGER WENT FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH ME AND I TOLD HIM THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED. HE REFUSED TO DO THE WORK UNDER WARRANTEE AND BILLED ME $90.00 LABOR FOR RETIGHTENING THE BEARINGS. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE AND THE FRONT SUSPENSION COMPONENTS ARE RAPIDLY DETERIORATING. BALL JOINTS, CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS, WHEEL BEARINGS... MITSUBISHI IS VIOLATING THE WARRANTEE BY AVOIDING AND DELAYING A FULL AND COMPLETE REPAIR OF THESE PROBLEMS!*AK

2000 Mitsubishi Montero recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero.

2020-01-23
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 1998-2000 Montero vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 25, 2021. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-001.
2004-09-01
  • Manufacturer: MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN
  • Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, 'OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION.' THE BILINGUAL ENGLISH/SPANISH REMOVABLE AIR BAG WARNING LABELS AFFIXED TO THE DASH AND TO THE SUNVISOR DO NOT MEET THE SIZE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD.
  • Consequence: THIS DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD.
  • Remedy: MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN WILL MAIL A CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION LETTER CONTAINING A WRITTEN DESCRIPTION AND A GRAPHIC OF THE BI-LINGUAL DASHBOARD AIR BAG WARNING LABEL. IN ADDITION, ALL CURRENT 2000-2004 NATIVA OWNERS WILL ALSO RECEIVE REPLACEMENT AIR BAG ALERT LABELS FOR THE SUN VISORS. THIS RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MARCH OR APRIL 2005. THE NOTIFICATION TO THE NATIVA OWNERS IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL OR MAY 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MITSUBISHI CARIBBEAN AT 1-787-251-8715.

Negative 2000 Mitsubishi Montero car reviews

  1. Humberto Olson 2024-11-02

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Full-size Montero. This is actually the second one I've owned, and I have to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag. My first one, a '95 LS, was unfortunately quite unreliable and expensive to fix. However, I decided to give the Montero another chance and purchased a '97 with the larger 3.5 engine. While the gas mileage wasn't great, I found that it performed well...until it hit around 85,000 miles. Since then, I've had a few mechanical issues, including a blown head gasket, 5 alternators, 3 batteries, a water pump, and camshaft seals. On top of that, some of the electronic features like the mirrors, remote entry, and antenna have stopped working. It's been a bit of a headache, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. Just wanted to share my experience and give you a heads up. Thanks for listening!

  2. Joesph Steuber 2024-09-24

This is a great looking SUV with lots of features. However, I have had some trouble with it despite taking good care of it. It has been expensive to repair and maintain, with multiple issues such as alternators, rear door hinges, and batteries. Unfortunately, my experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Montero. It's a cool truck, but reliability is a top priority for me.

Positive 2000 Mitsubishi Montero car reviews

  1. Myles Schoen 2024-11-04

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I purchased this SUV last year and it has been working great with no problems. I did notice a sound coming from the engine, but I plan on getting it fixed soon. Overall, it's been a great SUV to have!

  2. Frank Kuhic 2024-09-10

There are many SUVs out there that claim to be great off-roaders, but this truck truly delivers. It has won the Dakar Rally multiple times, which is a testament to its capabilities. If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle tough terrain, this truck is a great option. Of course, if you're not planning on using it for off-roading, there are plenty of other SUVs that might be a better fit. While it may not be the most attractive truck on the market, it is incredibly practical and durable. The drivetrain linkage is top-notch, and I've been able to navigate some very challenging situations in this truck that I don't think many SUVs could handle. Ultimately, it's important to be honest about your needs and intentions when choosing a vehicle.

  3. Anderson Crooks 2024-09-03

This SUV is fantastic! I absolutely love it. It outperforms any other SUV on the road, even though it's 5 years old. I am extremely happy and satisfied with my SUV - it's a dream come true for me. It's a great vehicle!

  4. Jamey Hickle 2024-08-24

The Montero is such a joy to drive! I've never had any issues with it, and it's impressively fuel-efficient. Even on rainy days, it hugs the road like a dream. It's truly one hell of an SUV!

  5. Johan Graham 2024-08-08

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had this vehicle for about 3 years/40,000 miles and have only performed scheduled maintenance on it. I understand that maintenance can be expensive, but it's important to keep your SUV in top condition. Although it may not be as refined as the newer Montero, it's still a good solid SUV with fold-up third row seating for better flexibility. You can expect to get around 17 mpg, which is pretty decent for an SUV. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
