In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

I found out this was because of a problem with this cars airbag breaking down that causes this - and that there is a recall because these airbags are dangerous if they go off. I received a letter at one point from Mitsubishi about this. I filled out a form a long time ago when I got that, I also emailed them before, I also have tried calling them a few times. They never get back to me. There is no Mitsubishi dealership in my town so I cannot take the car there unannounced without driving 2 hours to another town. I do not want to do this if the airbags are unsafe, so the car has been sitting for a long time because of this issue. I want it resolved. I do not care if Mitsubishi or a mechanic or whoever does it, I just need it done so I do not get killed by my airbag, I don't want to pay for it since it is covered by recall. THE SECOND ATTEMPT TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED WAS AGAIN AT COURTESY MITSU WITH NO COOPERATION FROM THE SERVICE DEPT. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE ERATIC STEERING AND THE LOW GRUMBLING SOUND WAS EMINATING FROM THE FRONT TIRES. AND THEY FURTHER CLAIMED THAT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM DUE TO "TREAD SEPARATION" ON THE FRONT TIRES. THIS WAS CONFIRMED AT A LATER DATE TO BE FALSE AS I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A YOKOHAMA DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE OWNER INSPECT THE TIRES. HE FOUND NO DEFECTS. I HAD THE TIRES ROTATED AND BALANCED TO ELIMINATE ANY DOUBT AS TO THE TIRES CONDITION. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO PROGRESSIVELY GET WORSE. LOUD CLUNKING NOISES, WHEEL BEARING GROWL, AND EXTREMELY ERRATIC STEERING BEHAVIOR AT ALL SPEEDS. I AM NOT ABLE TO TAKE MY FAMILY OUT ON THE FREEWAY IN THIS VEHICLE AS I AM AFRAID FOR THEIR SAFETY. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO ANOTHER, LARGER DEALER, "CAPITOL MITSUBISHI". THEY KEPT THE VEHICLE FOR 48 HRS AND CONCLUDED THAT THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS WERE INDEED LOOSE AGAIN. HOWEVER THEY REFUSED TO ADMIT THAT THERE WAS ANY OTHER PROBLEM AND ONLY RETIGHTENED THE BEARINGS ON THE RIGHT SIDE. THE MANAGER WENT FOR A TEST DRIVE WITH ME AND I TOLD HIM THAT THE PROBLEM WAS NOT SOLVED. HE REFUSED TO DO THE WORK UNDER WARRANTEE AND BILLED ME $90.00 LABOR FOR RETIGHTENING THE BEARINGS. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2000 Mitsubishi Montero.

- Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 1998-2000 Montero vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with Non-Azide Driver air bag Inflators (NADI) and do not contain phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant. Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflators may absorb moisture, causing the inflators to rupture or the air bag cushion to underinflate.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, an inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. These scenarios increase the risk of serious injury or death.
- Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 25, 2021. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-20-001.

There are many SUVs out there that claim to be great off-roaders, but this truck truly delivers. It has won the Dakar Rally multiple times, which is a testament to its capabilities. If you're looking for a vehicle that can handle tough terrain, this truck is a great option. Of course, if you're not planning on using it for off-roading, there are plenty of other SUVs that might be a better fit. While it may not be the most attractive truck on the market, it is incredibly practical and durable. The drivetrain linkage is top-notch, and I've been able to navigate some very challenging situations in this truck that I don't think many SUVs could handle. Ultimately, it's important to be honest about your needs and intentions when choosing a vehicle.

The Montero is such a joy to drive! I've never had any issues with it, and it's impressively fuel-efficient. Even on rainy days, it hugs the road like a dream. It's truly one hell of an SUV!

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had this vehicle for about 3 years/40,000 miles and have only performed scheduled maintenance on it. I understand that maintenance can be expensive, but it's important to keep your SUV in top condition. Although it may not be as refined as the newer Montero, it's still a good solid SUV with fold-up third row seating for better flexibility. You can expect to get around 17 mpg, which is pretty decent for an SUV. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Full-size Montero. This is actually the second one I've owned, and I have to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag. My first one, a '95 LS, was unfortunately quite unreliable and expensive to fix. However, I decided to give the Montero another chance and purchased a '97 with the larger 3.5 engine. While the gas mileage wasn't great, I found that it performed well...until it hit around 85,000 miles. Since then, I've had a few mechanical issues, including a blown head gasket, 5 alternators, 3 batteries, a water pump, and camshaft seals. On top of that, some of the electronic features like the mirrors, remote entry, and antenna have stopped working. It's been a bit of a headache, but I'm hopeful that things will improve. Just wanted to share my experience and give you a heads up. Thanks for listening!

This is a great looking SUV with lots of features. However, I have had some trouble with it despite taking good care of it. It has been expensive to repair and maintain, with multiple issues such as alternators, rear door hinges, and batteries. Unfortunately, my experience has led me to decide not to purchase another Montero. It's a cool truck, but reliability is a top priority for me.
