1996 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero (三菱・パジェロ, Japanese: ; English: /pəˈhɛroʊ/; Spanish: ) is a full-size SUV (sport utility vehicle) manufactured and marketed globally by Mitsubishi over four generations — introduced in 1981 and discontinued in 2021.
The Pajero nameplate derives from Leopardus pajeros, the Pampas cat. Mitsubishi marketed the SUV as the Montero in North America, Spain, and Latin America (except for Brazil and Jamaica) due to the term "pajero" being derogatory (meaning "wanker") in Spanish. In the United Kingdom, it was known as the Shogun (将軍), named after the Japanese word for "General." The model was discontinued in North America in 2006.
The Pajero, Montero, and Shogun names were used on other, mechanically unrelated models, such as the Pajero Mini kei car, the Pajero Junior and Pajero iO/Pinin mini SUVs, and the Triton-based Pajero/Montero/Shogun Sport mid-size SUVs. The Pajero is one of four models by Mitsubishi (the others being the Triton, Pajero Sport and the Pajero iO) that share Mitsubishi's heavy-duty, off-road-oriented Super-Select four-wheel-drive system as opposed to their light-duty Mitsubishi S-AWC all-wheel-drive system.
The Pajero has generated more than 3.3 million sales in its 40-year run. The name lives with the smaller Pajero Sport, which is based on the Mitsubishi Triton/L200/Strada pickup. Despite the similarity in name, the Pajero Sport shares none of the original Pajero's underpinnings and is smaller in overall size.

Common 1996 Mitsubishi Montero problems
The Mitsubishi Montero is a reliable vehicle, but certain year models may be prone to more expensive repairs due to some common issues that persist. Here are some of the most common problems with the 1996 Mitsubishi Montero, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Faulty hydraulic brake booster: Owners of the 2001 Montero have reported a loud noise in the front of their vehicle. Some owners experienced brake failure when this sound occurred, while others only had their ABS light turn on. Upon investigation, the dealer found that the brake’s hydraulic brake booster had failed. The booster is a component of the vehicle’s braking system that increases the force to be applied to the brake master cylinder. A YouTuber was able to identify the root of the problem, which is a motor that wears out inside the hydraulic brake booster. When the motor wears out, it can cease to function and effectively make the brakes unusable. Mitsubishi issued a voluntary recall for the issue even though the NHTSA wasn’t able to find any particular safety defect.
- Timing belt: The timing belt should be swapped at 60K mile intervals. The engine is an interference engine, so belt breakage will mean major engine repair. Check 4x4 operation.
- Valve stem seals: Oil burning at startup due to worn VSS (valve stem seals) is a common problem in the 12V motors. The 12-valve models are prone to this problem, which has been fixed on the 24-valve version. Check to see if the central locking operates properly, as this is a common problem on these vehicles.
- Transmission problems: Transmission problems are a common issue with the Montero Sport from this year range. The transmission in these vehicles is known to be prone to failure, and may experience slipping, hesitation, or other issues. In some cases, a complete transmission replacement may be necessary.
- Engine misfires: This can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty spark plugs or ignition coils, clogged fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning engine control module (ECM). Symptoms of engine misfires may include rough idling, reduced power, or the illumination of the check engine light.
- Fuel system problems: This can include issues such as clogged fuel filters, malfunctioning fuel pumps, or leaking fuel lines. Symptoms of fuel system problems may include poor fuel economy, engine hesitation, or difficulty starting the vehicle.
- Suspension problems: Suspension problems are another issue that owners of the Montero Sport from this year range may experience. This can include issues such as worn shocks or struts, damaged ball joints or control arms, or damaged springs. Symptoms of suspension problems may include a rough ride, poor handling, or unusual noises coming from the suspension system.
It's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these problems, and regular maintenance and prompt repair of any issues that do arise can help keep your Montero Sport running smoothly and reliably for years to come.
Are old Mitsubishi Monteros reliable?
According to MotorTrend and various forums, the Montero is overall a reliable SUV. However, there are certain model years that run into problems in their transmissions, braking, and engines, which are always certainly expensive to fix. These are the 2001 to 2002 Montero models.
How many miles does a Mitsubishi Montero last?
I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.
Why was Montero discontinued?
Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.
What kind of engine is in the Mitsubishi Montero?
4 cylinder Diesel engine
The Montero Sport, a new SUV from Mitsubishi comes in 4 variants. The top variant of Montero Sport is powered by the GT 4WD AT a 2442 cc, 4 cylinder Diesel engine that fires 179 hp of power and 430 Nm torque. The 7 seater.

I purchased my Montero used from its previous owner, who had leased the vehicle. Since then, I have taken it on countless road trips up and down the East Coast to attend my sons' soccer tournaments. I absolutely adore this vehicle, although I must admit that the cost of insurance and maintenance can be quite high. Repairs can be particularly expensive due to the cost of parts and the labor-intensive design features. Despite these drawbacks, I plan to keep driving my Montero until it can no longer go because I love it so much.

Hey there! I've been driving this SUV for a year now and it's been quite the adventure! It's got 120k miles on it, but after fixing the water pump, the engine has been working great. I absolutely love how roomy it is, and the compass, four-wheel drive, and height make it perfect for any terrain. The engine is super reliable too! One time, I even managed to fit ten people from Harlingen, Texas to Monterrey, Mexico. It was definitely a tight squeeze, but we made it work! The only downside is that the ride can be a bit rough sometimes.

You've got yourself a real gem there! Your vehicle has clocked an impressive 236,000 miles and still going strong without any major mechanical problems. That's truly remarkable!
-
Hey there! I bought this amazing truck back in 2001 when it only had 40K miles on it. I'm actually the second owner and I plan on driving it until the end of time! It's been such a reliable truck, only needing the typical maintenance like timing belt, brakes, and alternator replacements. I've taken great care of it, and the previous owner did too, which is why it's still running like a champ. From what I've seen in reviews, people have had great experiences with Monteros, although there's always someone who's had a bad one. The Montero is a true SUV that can handle serious off-roading, and it's got a classic truck look that I absolutely love! It gets around 15/19 MPG, which is pretty good for a truck like this.

For seven years, my trusty vehicle served as an office on wheels for road travel, carrying product and brochures for Sales and Marketing to DoD, Federal and State Government clients. It never let me down and was a reliable companion. Unfortunately, my Mitsubishi dealership in Montgomery, AL closed down, and I have struggled to find a competent and trustworthy repair facility. However, I have finally found a recommended facility for my upcoming timing belt change, and I am even ordering most of the parts myself.

Here is a list of some of the issues I've experienced with my vehicle: Flywheel cracked at 32K, AC compressor at 60K, Engine Cylinder head after timing chain broke at 80k, Heater Core at 81k, Electric seat motor at 90K, and Electric Radio Antenna at 93K. It seems like every single system and part of this vehicle is disposable. Despite following the maintenance program to the letter, I've had a lot of issues. I find it amusing that their new ads are offering their cars for free with no money down, no interest, and no payments for a year. It seems like soon they will be paying us to take their cars!

I really enjoyed driving this vehicle, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Just one month after taking ownership, I had to take it to the garage to fix the fuel regulator, which cost me $550. Now, less than a year later, it's back in the garage for a crankshaft pulley issue. The garage tried to remove the bolt, but it snapped at the head. Mitsubishi is quoting me $4000 for a new crankshaft, as they have to replace everything they touch while removing it. Unfortunately, this experience has led me to say goodbye to Mitsubishi for good.

After 100k she's still going strong. I'm glad to hear that you've been overall pleased with it. It sounds like you've been through a lot with 3 growing kids and their gear, but it's great to hear that it's still tight as a drum. I agree that it has a nice design, although I can understand why you might think the new ones look kind of effeminate.

I bought my Monty back in '98 because the '87 model was too small for another kid on the way. It's always been reliable. People I meet always think it's a newer model. I plan to keep driving it until I can't anymore.
