1998 Mitsubishi Montero sport problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.
First generation (K80/K90/PA/PA II; 1996)
For the SUV sold alongside the first generation Montero Sport in Latin American markets, see Mitsubishi Montero Outlander.
Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-02-05
- VIN: JA4MT31P6WP
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING ALONG I-17 NEAR PHOENIX, AZ MERGING ONTO I-10 WEST - WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN I COULDN'T STEER THE VEHICLE. ALL WHILE GOING 65 MPH. IT TOOK EVERY BIT OF MY STRENGTH TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE SAFELY OFF THE HIGHWAY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. I HAD IT TOWED TO MARK MITSUBISHI IN AVONDALE, AZ FOR REPAIRS. AFTER SEVERAL DAYS THE "REPAIRS" WERE DONE. THE DAMAGE WAS DUE TO THE BOLT - CRANK SHAFT PULLEY - I PAID NEARLY $600 FOR REPAIRS. FOUR AND A HALF WEEKS LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED, THIS TIME I WAS DRIVING AN HOUR FROM MY HOME ON 202 IN CHANDLER WHEN I WAS GETTING OFF THE HIGHWAY, AS SOON AS I GOT ON THE OFF RAMP, I HEARD METAL HIT AND SAW SOMETHING FLY ACROSS THE OFF-RAMP. AGAIN, I HAD MY VEHICLE TO TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR YET ANOTHER REPAIR OF THE SAME PROBLEM. THEN APRIL 8TH, AGAIN IT APPEARS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM, THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY CAN'T FIX IT A THIRD TIME. THEY REFUNDED MY MONEY FROM THE FIRST REPAIR. A LOCAL MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO GET THE BOLT BACK IN, FOR IT TO COME OUT AGAIN TODAY, APRIL 26TH. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE, THAT DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE. NOW I HAVE A TRUCK THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AND THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT WORK ON IT. I WAS IN TWO SEPARATE INCIDENTS WITH THIS VEHICLE AT HIGH RATES OF SPEED AND WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT I WAS NOT INJURED AND THAT I DID NOT GET INTO ACCIDENT INJURING ANYONE ELSE. THIS IS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE THAT MITSUBISHI NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED OR PERMANENTLY INJURED.

HOW CAN I MAKE SURE THAT MORE OF THESE TIRES ARE NOT BEING SOLD. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-01-28
- VIN: JA4MT31P6WP
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I BOUGHT A 1998 MITSUBITSHI MONTERO SPORT LS APPROX. 9 MONTHS AGO AND WHILE IT RAN GREAT ABOUT A MONTH AGO I STARTED NOTICING WHEN I WOULD GO TO START IT UP IT WOULD ACT LIKE THE BATTERY WAS GOING DEAD. SO I REPLACED THE BATTERY. THE PROBLEM STILL OCCURRED. THEN ABOUT 4 DAYS AFTER THAT OUT OF NO WHERE THE ENGINE WOULD START SQUEALING. BUT THAT WOULD ONLY LAST FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS. AND STOP UNTIL THE TURN WOULD BE OFF LONG ENOUGH FOR THE ENGINE TO GET COLD. WELL I WAS ON MY WAY OUT OF TOWN TO SEE A MEDICAL SPECIALIST FOR MY DAUGHTER'S CONTINUING MEDICAL CONDITION AND THE TRUCK JUST SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY LUCKILY WE WERE NOT HIT BY ANY OTHER MOTOR VEHICLES. AFTER GETTING THE TRUCK OFF THE ROAD I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD, SEEN AND PICKED UP A PULLEY OFF THE GROUND WITH A LONG BOLT STILL INSIDE OF IT, I LATER LEARNED THAT IT WAS A CRANK SHAFT PULLEY WHICH HAD CAUSED ME TO THROW THE TIMING IN THE TRUCK. I LOST MY JOB, MISSED THE DOCTORS APPT FOR MY DAUGHTER AND HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A VEHICLE EVERY SINCE THAT INCIDENT ON JANUARY 28,2009. NOW I DO UNDERSTAND THAT THE TRUCK IS APPROX 11 YEARS OLD BUT BEFORE I BOUGHT IT I TOOK IT TO THE MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP AND HAD THEM INSPECT IT AND HOOK IT UP TO A MACHINE. THEY TOLD ME THAT FOR AN OLDER TRUCK IT IS IN GREAT CONDITION. AND THAT NOTHING WAS WORK THAT THEY SEEN OFF FOUND ON THE COMPUTER, WITH THE TRUCK. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-12-31
- VIN: JA4MT31P8WP
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: WE EXPERIENCED A SMALL SLEET/FREEZING RAIN EVENT. I TURNED ON THE FRONT WIPERS FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND BECAUSE I REALIZED THE BLADES WERE FROZEN. I PROCEEDED TO CLEAN THE WINDSHIELD AND WARM UP THE VEHICLE. AFTER WARMING UP THE VEHICLE THE WIPERS WOULD NOT WORK; THE 15 AMP FUSE HAD NOT BLOWN; AND I COULD NOT FIND A WIPER MOTOR CIRCUIT BREAKER (I PURCHASED THE SERVICE MANUALS WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE). TO MY AMAZEMENT THIS IS WHAT IS STATED IN THE VEHICHLE OWNER'S MANUAL "BEFORE OPERATIONG THE WIPERS IN COLD WEATHER, CHECK TO BE SURE THE WIPERS ARE NOT FROZEN (GOOD ADVICE).ATTEMPTING TO OPERATE WHILE THE BLADES ARE FROZEN COULD CASUE THE WIPER MOTER TO BURN OUT". THE NEXT STATEMENT GOES ON TO SAY THIS "IF THE MOVING WIPERS BECOME BLOCKED BY ICE OR OTHER DEPOSITS ON THE GLASS THE MOTOR MAY BURN OUT EVEN IF THE WITHER SWITCH IS AT OFF." THE MOTOR MAY BURN OUT JUST WHEN YOU NEED IT THE MOST; THE FUSE DOES NOT PROTECT THE WIPER MOTOR (IT DID NOT); AND THERE IS NO CIRCUIT BREAKER TO PROTECT THE MOTOR EVEN THOUGH THERE IS ONE IN THE SCHEMATIC IN THE SERVICE MANUAL. THE MOTOR DID BURN OUT WITHIN THE FRACTION OF A SECOND. I CALLED SEVERAL DIFFERENT MITSUBISHI DEARLERSHIPS AND THEY ALL TOLD ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE AND THEY HAD REPLACED NUMEROUS WIPER MOTORS. NOW THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE. WHAT IS WRONG IS THAT ANYONE WHO HAS AN INKLING OF BASIC ELECTRONICS COMPRHENDS THE PURPOSE AND USES FOR FUSES AND CIRCUIT BREAKERS. THESE DEVICES ARE UTILIZED TO PROTECT IMPORTANT ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. THERE IS AN INVISIBLE CIRCUIT BREAKER IN THE REPAIR MANUAL AND A 15 AMP FUSE THAT DID NOT OPEN AND THERE IS A WIPER MOTOR THAT WILL BURN OUT EVEN WITH THE WIPER SWITCH IS OFF. I HAVE WORK WITH SEVERAL WELL TRAINED MECHANICS FOR MANY YEARS AND THERE WAS A SAYING WHEN WE FOUND IGNORANT MISTAKES MADE BY U.S. MANUFACTURERES. THE QUOTE WAS "BUILT IN DETROIT (JAPAN)BY IDIOTS". THIS IS MY SUMMARY STATEMENT REGARDING THE WIPER MOTOR IN THIS VEHICLE. *CN

MY BELTS BROKE WHICH I HAD TO GET A WRECKER TO TOW MY VEHICLE GET IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE CALLS BACK WITH YOU HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS. THE REASON THE BELTS JUMPED OFF WAS THE CRANK SHAFT PULLEY CAME LOOSE AND SCREWED THE HARMONIC BALANCE AND OTHER THINGS UP. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR INJURED AND I KNOW THIS WAS A RECALL ON THE 1998'S BUT I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED SO I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS TAKEN IN FOR THE RECALL AND NOW MY MECHANIC SAYS SOMETIMES REPAIRING THIS DOES NOT ALWAYS HOLD SO HE WOULD NOT WARRANTY MY 800.00 OF DAMAGE. HE DID SAY THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH MITSUBISHI VEHICLES IN THE DESIGN AND I WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT SCREW THE MOTOR UP. VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BE ON THE ROADS. *JB

I HAD THE GENTLEMEN LOOK AT THE CAR AND HE STATED TO ME THAT "YOU MUST HAVE A GUARDIAN ANGEL CAUSE I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU SUVIVED THE STOP". I HAD MY MECHANIC COME TO MY CAR AND REPAIR THIS DAMAGE AND HE STATED THAT SAME THING. " IN ALL THE 16 YEARS AS A MECHANIC HE NEVER SAY ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE. HE REPAIR THE FRONT END. APPARENTLY, THE MITSUBISHI FRONT END STREERING WHEEL PART WHERE THE PART TWISTED INTO THE SLEEVE OF THE FRONT END WAS STRIPPED. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your feedback on the Montero Sport. It's great to hear that you've had such positive experiences with the Montero line in general. I completely understand what you mean about the Landcruiser - it's hard not to compare when you've had such a different experience. That being said, I still think the Montero Sport is a fantastic car for the price. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
-
Hey there! I noticed that you own a '98 Monty LS 4WD and think it's excellent. It's great to hear that it responds like a real Japanese Samurai Warrior. I also agree that Off-Road is one of the best things that Mitsubishi has done with its SUVs.
-
The ride on the highway was great, and the backseat legroom is excellent compared to other SUVs of similar size. The front seats remain comfortable even after hours of driving. Although there were issues with broken leaf springs and a broken radio antenna, these were promptly addressed. Additionally, there was a whistling sound at highway speeds and a poorly functioning rear door latch, but these were also resolved. Overall, this SUV is a reliable and comfortable choice for long drives.
-
Overall, this is a great vehicle. You've already put 73k trouble-free miles on it and couldn't be happier. The only issue you had was a weird howling noise during highway speeds on windy days. Mitsu put a TSB out for this, but the dealership gave you a hard time about replacing the window seals. They eventually did and everything is fine now.

Daryl Goyette 2024-10-11
The Montero Sport is great for pulling boats, trailers, and more. It's spacious enough for all five passengers, and with all the trunk, rack, and hideaway spots, there's always room to store just about any item. The build of the Montero is bold and safe, and the overall performance is splendid.
Kraig Kuhn 2024-08-22
The car has some issues with its performance and safety features. It may not be the best option for those who prioritize safety and reliability. It is recommended to consider other options in the market that may better suit your needs.
Chadrick Lemke 2024-05-27
This car is not what I expected. It has not met my standards and I am disappointed with its performance. I have decided to sell it and go back to my previous car. I prefer German cars as they suit my needs better. Thank you for your understanding.
Preston Wilderman 2024-03-26
This vehicle's performance is subpar due to its lack of power and excessive weight, resulting in poor handling. Additionally, the steering components are currently experiencing issues despite the relatively low mileage of 54K.
