2001 Mitsubishi Montero sport problems
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.
First generation (K80/K90/PA/PA II; 1996)
For the SUV sold alongside the first generation Montero Sport in Latin American markets, see Mitsubishi Montero Outlander.
Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.
Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

- Summary: After googling and doing a little reaching I found out it is a very common problem amongst these vehicles that the horn starts blaring in the early morning hours non stop until unplugging the fuse or battery. I have to remove the fuse therefore I’m unsafe knowing that I’m driving without any communication with other vehicles. It is a very expensive repair that most people can’t afford so they’re left doing what I learned to do which puts a lot of people in danger. Please help with this safety concern.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-10-01
- VIN: JA4MT21HX1P
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake lines completely rusted through and I lost all brakes while heading to work, thankfully I was able to pull the emergency brake to slow down and I coasted through a red light blowing my horn so I was not hit. I bought this vehicle brand new with only 3 miles on it and ever since I initially got it , it began to rust. Clearly it was not rust treated as everything under the body and alot under the hood is rusted. There is even metal inside of the vehicle cabin that is rusted, like the gas cap lever. This vehicle should have been recalled many years ago like the Outlander due to all of the rust the vehicle gets under it causing thing to fail while its being driven. My vehicle just has a little over 100,000 miles on it and it now sits after that brake incident as I am afraid to drive it seeing all of the rust under it. Even the running boards are all rusted underneath. I am sure that everyone with this model vehicle has experienced the same problem but these vehicles are dangerous on the roads due to everything on them rusting .

- Summary: THIS WEEK I HAVE HAD TWO OCCURRENCES WHERE THE HORN JUST STARTS BLARING AND WON'T STOP. ONCE WAS IN THE AFTERNOON, AND THE OTHER WAS AT 5:00 AM. MY ONLY DIY ALTERNATIVES ARE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY (OBVIOUSLY CAN'T USE THE VEHICLE), OR REMOVE THE FUSE (VERY UNSAFE). THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, NO WEATHER PROBLEMS, TEMPERATURE WAS MILD (AROUND 70 DEGREES). PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING, THE HORN RARELY WORKED AT ALL; AT LEAST NOT WHEN I WANTED IT TO WORK. I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM AND IT APPEAR TO BE VERY WIDESPREAD ON THIS VEHICLE. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT, IT INVOLVES REMOVING THE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY, SO GETTING IT FIXED IS VERY COSTLY (OVER $1000). I EXPECT TO SPEND SOME MONEY ON A FEW ITEMS HERE & THERE ON A 16 YEAR OLD VEHICLE, BUT I DON'T EXPECT TO SPEND OVER $ 1000 ON A VEHICLE JUST TO MAKE THE HORN WORK RIGHT.

Overall, I'm glad to hear that you had a good experience so far. I understand that the insurance rates for this SUV might be a concern for you. It's always a good idea to check the insurance prices beforehand, as they can add up to the overall cost of driving. Thank you for sharing your feedback!
-
Only maintenance that has had to be done is routine, an oil change every 3,000 miles. No other mechanical problems with this car. It's been great for our needs, up to this point. We are looking for a new car with a 3rd row. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone!
-
New for $17999! That's great to hear! Have you experienced any issues with it?

It's great to hear that you have had such a positive experience with your Montero Sport! While it seems like some people have had issues with theirs, you have been lucky enough to avoid any major problems. With 170,000 miles under your belt, it's clear that you have taken good care of your vehicle. Keep up the good work!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Mitsubishi Montero Sport. I've had it for 4 1/2 years and it's been a great ride! I've found that keeping up with maintenance has really helped keep costs down. Plus, it's super spacious and comfortable - definitely not your typical boxy SUV. All in all, I think it's a great value for the price.

The Montero Sport has superb 4wd, torque, and stability. The seats are better than what you'll find in most luxury vehicles. However, if you don't have a 3.5l engine, you may find it severely underpowered. Additionally, I have experienced some nagging electrical problems, such as having to replace headlamps (bulbs) six times, front parking lamps, all brake lamps, taillamps, and a malfunctioning 4wd switch. I have also had to replace brake pads more often than I would like. The chrome grille began to peel, but my dealer replaced it for free.

After owning a Honda and a Toyota, I can confidently say that the quality of my Mitsubishi has been disappointing. Unfortunately, I have experienced multiple issues such as the timing belt, front main leak, rear main leak, O2 sensor and Transmission all failing under 65000 miles. However, I believe that Mitsubishi has the potential to improve their product and customer service. While the book value may not be ideal, I still believe that this vehicle has its merits. Overall, I recommend that Mitsubishi takes steps to improve their product and customer service to better serve their customers.
Shayne Kozey 2024-11-09
Although the vehicle runs well, there are some areas that could be improved. The armrest is too short, the seat is too low, and the window ledge for the left arm is too narrow. Additionally, the A/C is undersized and takes a while to cool down. There have been some electrical problems with the interior lights and the lights when using the keyless entry system. The vehicle also lacks a tape deck and has a fake roof rack. Leg room in the back seats is limited when the front seats are all the way back. Despite these issues, the vehicle has been well-maintained and has only 63000 miles. However, the resale value is lower than expected, with an offer of only $8500.00.
Einar Funk 2024-11-07
The Montero Sport may not be the most exciting or exotic vehicle out there, but it is certainly reliable and flexible transportation. I would recommend checking the used market first, as the value tends to plummet, but you'll love the fact that you won't have to go in for service as often. In fact, it has exceeded my expectations!
Ewell Medhurst 2024-10-10
I like the vehicle, but I wouldn't buy another one due to the outrageous resale loss. I've had some trouble keeping the chassis aligned, which has caused excessive tire wear. Additionally, the vehicle is top-heavy and tends to wander and sway, which could be dangerous in high crosswinds. It's definitely a two-hands-on-the-wheel kind of vehicle. The AC system is also poor at slow engine speeds, so you might get hot in city driving on a hot day. I've had all these issues looked at by the dealer, but unfortunately, they haven't been able to fix them.
