2011 Mazda Cx-7 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-7 is a mid-size crossover SUV from Mazda, and is the production version of the MX-Crossport concept car. It was shown publicly for the first time at the 2006 LA Auto Show in January. Production officially began on February 20, 2006 in Mazda's Ujina #2 factory in Hiroshima, and went on sale in April 2006 as a 2007 model. The CX-7 was Mazda's first mid-size SUV since the Navajo was discontinued in 1994, although the CX-7 is considered more of a 'Soft Roader'.

The mid-size CX-7 was positioned below the larger three-row Mazda CX-9; the vehicles did not share platforms. Instead, it used the Ford C1 platform that underpinned the Ford Focus and Mazda3. The CX-7 was discontinued in August 2012 in favor of the new Mazda CX-5; as the compact CX-5 has similar interior space to the mid-size CX-7.

Specifications

Engine and transmission

Power comes from the same 2.3 L inline-4 MZR L3-VDT DISI engine used in the Mazdaspeed3 and Mazdaspeed6 coupled with a six-speed Aisin F21 automatic transmission, and tuned to produce 244 hp or 182 kW (Australian model 175 kW) at 5000 rpm and 258 lb·ft (350 N·m) of torque at a low 2500 rpm, 99% of the maximum torque is available to 5000 rpm.

The MZR 2.3L DISI turbo engine was retuned in the North American specification CX-7 to deliver torque at a lower rpm for less turbo lag off the line, at the cost of power. This was achieved thanks to a redesigned, smaller K04 turbocharger. United Kingdom specification CX-7s featured the same, larger K04 turbocharger and transmission found in the Mazdaspeed line.

This has happened more than once and I feel unsafe driving now because I feel like I'm driving with no lights on at all these days without rain and rain makes it 10x worse.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-18
  • VIN: JM3ER2B53B0
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: We purchased a set of headlights and taillights via Amazon from Perde on 12/8/20 after verifying they would fit the vehicle-confirmed with the description provided online. The product that was delivered is defective and presents a fire/electrical safety concern. We installed them, which we had issues initially with the turn signals. While we worked to figure that piece out, we left in the new ones as the ones we had to replace were in worse shape. About a month after they were installed we noticed the headlights weren't working so replaced the bulbs-one of which appeared to be burned/melted. We thought this was a fluke, replaced the bulbs and this worked for a little while. Then about another month passes, my son was pulled over by the police due to both taillights being out. This also presents a safety issue with other drivers on the road not being able to see the vehicle at night. When we inspected the taillights, we found that both taillights bulbs had also burned/melted and the socket appeared to have burn marks on them. We believe this is a major safety issue given it could have caused an electrical fire in the vehicle. I have photos of this, and we still have the headlights and taillights we have since replaced with a different manufacturer. There were no warning lights on the vehicle, this was discovered after we pulled them off to inspect after having numerous issues replacing bulbs. When I contacted the company today their responses do not seem to indicate any concern on their part about this issue. They offered to replace them, however, there is no way I am going to put their parts on any of my vehicles ever again.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-18
  • VIN: Jm3er2c59b0
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Low beam headlights burn out every 6 months, no matter the quality of bulb. Casings are discolored on the inside and light doesn't project beyond about 4 feet, doesn't reach the car bumper in front of me. Cannot be corrected with lens cleaning kits or improved with brighter bulbs. Very dangerous. I cannot see in low light or dark at all. I've had this car since 2013 and it gets progressively worse. Many forums online with same issue reported.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-03-03
  • VIN: JM3ER2054B0
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THIRD OWNER OF VEHICLE. GOT A NOTICE FROM NHTSA AND MAZDA DUE TO REGISTRATION OF NEW TO US VEHICLE ON FEBRUARY 25, 2021. SET UP APPOINTMENT ON FEBRUARY 26, 2021 WITH NELSON MAZDA OF COOL SPRINGS FOR 10:15 A.M. ON MARCH 3, 2021. I INFORMED THE PERSON THAT THERE WERE TWO RECALLS, BUT I ONLY WANTED THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL DONE BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY REPLACED THE BAD PARTS ON THE OTHER RECALL WITH FAR SUPERIOR AFTERMARKET PARTS AND THEREFORE DIDN'T NEED/WANT THE OTHER RECALL WHICH WAS FOR DEFECTIVE BALL JOINTS. MY WIFE DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE FOR THE AIRBAG RECALL. THEY INFORMED US A LITTLE WHILE LATER THAT WE HAD TO GET BOTH RECALLS DONE OR THEY COULDN'T DO EITHER BECAUSE THEY WOULD GET FINED BY MAZDA. I TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT I ALREADY REPAIRED THE BALL JOINT ISSUE TO MY LIKING AND THAT THE BAD PARTS WERE NO LONGER ON THE VEHICLE. I WOULD SIGN OFF ON IT. HE SAID THEY COULDN'T DO EITHER. I ASKED HIM IF WAS THE REFUSING TO DO THE AIRBAG RECALL THAT HAS PROVEN TO BE DEADLY AND SEND MY WIFE BACK ON THE ROAD WITH A DEFECTIVE PART INSTEAD OF FIXING IT, HE SAID YES. I CONTACTED MAZDA CUSTOMER CARE AND SPOKE WITH A REPRESENTATIVE AND KIND OF GOT THE SAME RESPONSE. I TOLD HER THAT THE AIRBAG RECALL AND THE BALL JOINT RECALL ARE TWO DIFFERENT RECALLS NOT CONTINGENT ON EACH OTHER AND REBUKED HER THAT MY WIFE'S LIFE WAS WORTH LESS THAN A ALLEGED FINE THAT THE DEALER COULD GET. I ALSO TOLD HER THAT THEIR REFUSAL TO DO A RECALL ON A KNOWN DEADLY DEFECTIVE PART WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS THERE AT THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT TIME WITH PARTS IN HAND WAS ILLOGICAL AND PUT THEM IN A LIABILITY LEGALLY NOW THAT THEY HAVE REFUSED TO PERFORM THE MANDATED RECALL.

ON JUNE 16TH, I SUBMITTED MY REIMBURSEMENT REQUEST ON JUNE 18TH I RECEIVED AN E-MAIL BACK STATING THAT ALL REPAIRS DONE BY THIRD PARTY WOULD BE MY RESPONSIBILITY. I TRIED CALLING AND SPEAKING WITH AN SUPERVISOR, WHO STILL ADVISED ME THAT IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY. SO I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW WHEN THEIR PARTS ARE RECALLED WITHOUT RECEIVING LETTERS ARE CALLS ABOUT IT. I PAID $855.80 TO GET THE LOWER CONTROL ARMS REPAIRED. I PROVIDED THEM WITH THE COPY OF MY BANK ACCOUNT, ALONG WITH THE RECEIPT COPY OF THE THIRD PARTY VENDOR WHO FIXED THE REPAIRS. I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED FOR MY $855.80. 1. Davonte Monahan 2024-07-02

I appreciate the feedback from the other reviewer, but I would like to offer a different perspective. While it is true that some may have had issues with the reliability of this car, I have found it to be quite dependable. Additionally, I believe that the interior hard surface plastics are durable and stylish, and I have not noticed any issues with wear and tear. Overall, I think this car is a great option to consider.

I recently took a CX-7 AWD rental car on a weekend getaway and unfortunately, my experience was not as positive as I had hoped. The car's fuel efficiency was disappointing, averaging less than 18 mpg on the highway and about 12 in city driving. Additionally, I found the turbo to be lacking in power and the car did not have electronic temperature control, a feature that is now common in similarly priced vehicles. While I was not impressed with the CX-7, I do believe that there are other options on the market that may better suit my needs. Thank you for considering my feedback, Mazda.

I was a bit disappointed with the interior design of the CX-7, especially since Mazda's interior design used to be light years ahead of anything American you could buy. If you're considering the black interior, keep in mind that everything shows up on it. The car comes with a lot of extras like blue tooth, a 5 disk cd changer (which I personally don't need), and a link for an mp3 player. However, the heated seats are a nice touch, especially when it's cold outside. Overall, it's a basic car that drives well and gets me where I need to go. I'm not much of a gear head, so I won't comment on the performance.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the CX-7 that I purchased a month ago. While I have had some difficulties finding replacement tires, as only one manufacturer makes them and they are currently out of stock, I have found the car to have decent handling and nice interior features. The seats could be more comfortable, but overall I am enjoying my purchase. Thanks for listening!

The vehicle experienced several issues, including ignition coil failure at 134k, plug failure at 59k, and fuel injector failure at 133k. While the cost of repairs may be significant, it is important to address these issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Positive 2011 Mazda Cx-7 car reviews

I really like this crossover! Compared to other competitors, the Mazda CX-7 is definitely my top choice. It's fun to drive and comes with great features. I have the sport with convenience package, which is by far the best package. I just can't live without the heated seats, interactive Bluetooth, back-up camera, and the moonroof. There are even two ways to fold the seats down, and there's a release button to put the back seats all the way down, so you can easily fit all your groceries in the trunk. My husband is 6 ft 5' and has plenty of room when he's driving, so there's definitely a lot of head and leg room. I've received so many compliments on this vehicle. It's definitely the best car for your money!

Recently had all recalls repaired at no cost. Although the new tires with less than 100 miles were a bit pricey, I absolutely love this vehicle! It runs great, feels great, and looks great. ZOOM ZOOM!!!

You'll have more space for cargo and you'll feel comfortable in the driver's seat, while also feeling safe.

I'm glad to hear that you love the handling of your CX-7! I understand that replacing the headlights can be a bit of a hassle, especially since you have to go through the wheel wells to get to them. It sounds like you've had some trouble with FWD drive in deep snow, as the snow piles up under the front and the wheels come off the ground. Have you considered upgrading to an AWD model? That might help with the snow issue. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car. I was able to purchase it brand new at the end of the model year for 5K off sticker, which was a great deal. Since then, I've only had to take it in for oil changes and two recalls, but the dealership service has been fantastic and reasonably priced. While it doesn't have as much cargo space as larger SUVs and the rear seat legroom is limited, it's perfect for kids. Additionally, the resale value looks to be better than average. The only downside is that it can be a bit noisy on the highway unless the radio is cranked up, but it's a great vehicle for getting around town. On highway trips, I get between 24-28 miles per gallon depending on speed and AC, and 21-22 miles per gallon locally. I'm considering upgrading to a CX-9, but I'm really going to miss this one.
