The Volkswagen Golf is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) produced by the German automotive manufacturer Volkswagen since 1974, marketed worldwide across eight generations, in various body configurations and under various nameplates – including as the Volkswagen Rabbit in the United States and Canada (Mk1 and Mk5), and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico (Mk1).

The original Golf Mk1 was a front-engined, front-wheel drive replacement for the air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle. Historically, the Golf is Volkswagen's best-selling model and is among the world's top three best-selling models, with more than 35 million units sold as of 2019.

Initially, most Golfs were 3-door hatchbacks. Other variants include a 5-door hatchback, estate (Variant, from 1993), convertible (Cabriolet and Cabrio, 1979–2002, Cabriolet, 2011–present), and a Golf-based saloon, called the Jetta, Vento (from 1992) or Bora (from 1999). The Golf covers economy to high-performance market segments.

The Golf has won awards, including the World Car of the Year in 2009, with the Mk6 and in 2013 with the Mk7. Along with the Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Astra, the Golf is one of only three cars to have won European Car of the Year twice, in 1992 and 2013. The Golf has made the annual Car and Driver 10Best list multiple times. The Mk7 won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2015, and the Mk1 GTI also won the award in 1985. The Mk4 won for the best-selling car in Europe in 2001.

Common 2011 Volkswagen Golf problems

The Volkswagen Golf 2011 has several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues range from minor inconveniences to significant mechanical problems that can affect the vehicle's performance and safety.

One of the most common problems reported with the Volkswagen Golf 2011 is fuel leaks, particularly in the 2.0 TDI diesel engine. This issue is caused by the particulate filter not getting hot enough to go through a regeneration cycle, leading to a blockage with soot. A long run can cure this, but it's advisable to take any diesel Golf for a long motorway journey periodically.

Another common problem with the Volkswagen Golf 2011 is issues with the DSG automatic gearboxes, which have a reputation for poor reliability. If they do fail, the repair costs can be high, making it a significant concern for owners.

The engine bay of the Volkswagen Golf 2011 is also known to produce rattles at startup, which can be caused by a low oil level leading to a stretched timing chain. This issue can cause significant engine damage if the timing chain snaps, making regular checks of the oil level essential.

Exhaust gas recirculation valves are also known to fail on diesel engines, with repair costs often exceeding £700. Dual mass flywheels can also be problematic, adding to the list of mechanical issues that owners may face.

In addition to these mechanical problems, some owners have reported issues with the roof liner sagging, which can be fixed under warranty.

The Volkswagen Golf 2011 also has some issues with its technology, with the standard radio not supporting Bluetooth, no USB port, and a small screen on the gauge cluster that shows basic information.

Overall, the Volkswagen Golf 2011 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, ranging from mechanical issues to technology limitations. However, with proper maintenance and care, many of these issues can be avoided or mitigated, ensuring a safe and reliable driving experience.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
  • VIN: WVWDM7AJ1BW
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The High-pressure Fuel pump failed during a routine drive at approximately 1500 RPMs. This caused an immediate loss of power while in traffic. Manage to limp the car to the nearest gas station in which the car finally died and would not start. Had to call for a tow truck. This immediate loss of power could have cause myself and my daughter to get into an accident. Luckily, we were not on a major highway doing 65+ MPH, which could have been a lot worse. The vehicle flashed a MIL light or flashing glow plug light at the time of the incident. The car did not show any signs of possible failure beforehand. This same issue has been recalled by Fiat-Chrysler on their Heavy-Duty Ram pickup trucks with 6.7L Cummins due to catastrophic failure of the CP4 fuel pump.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-18
  • VIN: WVWNM7AJ6BW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuse F16 (30A) in the engine fuse plate, melted instead of breaking - causing half of the cars lights to stop functioning including turn signals and brake lights. Cannot be fixed with replacing the fuse as it was never tripped but instead the whole fuse plate needs to be replaced. No warning lights preceded the event, all lights went out while driving. VW dealership requires a new plate to be put in with no explanation of what caused the melt and no guarantee that it won’t happen again. Multiple online forums suggest a similar finding, and even other models have tickets for recalls (same problem, same part) but not the 2011 Golf TDI.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-15
  • VIN: WVWDM7AJ4BW
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The wire from the alternator to the underhood fuse block is not thick enough to handle the current from the stock alternator. This causes the wire to get too hot melting the fuse block at the 30 amp fuse causing headlight issues.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-23
  • VIN: WVWNM7AJ1BW
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driving on interstate at 70 mph with cruise control on when car suddenly slowed and warning lights began flashing. I slowed to 60 mph and within a minute the engine shut off and was almost rear ended by a semi truck before I could get to the shoulder of the highway. Engine would not restart and I was stranded on the highway. Had to have the vehicle towed by AAA back to my home. Used my Ross-Tech VCDS scanning tool to troubleshoot and found codes: P0087 (fuel rail system pressure too low), P020 (cylinders 1-4 injection timing), P1004-P1007 (torque difference cylinders 1-4). Examined fuel filter and fuel metering valve and found metal chips and particles in both places. Based on this evidence, the high pressure fuel pump has likely failed. My safety was put at risk when the failure occurred due to the sudden loss of power and subsequent near collision with a truck. Additionally I was in danger of being hit by other vehicles as I sat on the shoulder of the highway waiting for a tow truck. My vehicle is available for inspection by the local VW dealership, but will have to be towed at my expense to be examined.

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-23
  • VIN: WVWMM7AJ9BW
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
  • Summary: 2011 GOLF TDI 2DOOR. STARTED THROWING AND ERROR CODE OF P2BA6. TOOK IT FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THEY STATED THAT ISSUE WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL AND WAS FIXED ALREADY. I CONTACTED VW DIRECTLY TO SEE HOW TO GO ABOUT THE SITUATION AND THEY STATED THE CAR WAS FIXED IN 2011 AND EVEN THOUGH I ONLY HAVE 44K MILES ON THE CAR THEY WILL STILL NOT FIX THE ISSUE BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. IN CONCLUSION THE PART THAT HAD ALREADY GONE BAD AND RECALLED HAS BEEN FIXED ONCE THEY ARE REFUSING TO REPLACE THE NEW PART SINCE IT HAS BEEN REPLACED. CLEARLY SHOWS THAT THE RECALLED PART HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUE WITH IT. *TR

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-03
  • VIN: WVWNM7AJ9BW
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL MY CAR HAS HAD A WEIRD SHUTTERING IN ANY GEAR WHEN COASTING AT A REGULAR SPEED. I TOOK IT TO ONE DEALER AND THEY SAID NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT YOU BASICALLY JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO SHIFT. TWO WEEKS LATER I NOTICED A SOFT MUFFLED HUSH SOUND THAT REMINDED ME OF A ROCK IN A TIRE. WHEN LOOKING UNDERNEATH THE CAR WE NOTICED DARK LIQUID COATING THE BOTTOM COVER. WE TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT DEALER AND AFTER HOISTING IT UP THEY CALLED US AND SAID THAT THE FLYWHEEL HAD SPRUNG LOOSE DUE TO FAULTY TORQUE AND A SPRING SPRUNG INTO THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING A HOLE AND RUPTURING IT. THEY ALSO MENTIONED THAT THIS SAME PART HAD BEEN REPLACED BACK IN 2014 BUT WE WERE UNAWARE . OUR THOUGHT IS THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE AND WHOMEVER REPLACED IT THE FIRST TIME DID NOT DO IT PROPERLY BECAUSE NO ONE AND NOTHING SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND TORQUE THE BOLTS AT THE PROPER PRESSURE. HOWEVER I BELIEVE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE OVERALL MECHANICS OF THE FLYWHEEL AND TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH COMBINATION. THERE IS SOMETHING FAULTY AND HAS CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. THIS CAR WAS BOUGHT LESS THAN A YEAR AGO.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-06-08
  • VIN: WVWMM7AJ8BW
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL HELLO NHTSA, I AM WRITING TO EXPRESS A CONCERN THAT I HAVE REGARDING MY 2011 VW GOLF TDI. MY CONCERN IS THAT VEHICLES AFFECTED BY BOTH THE TAKATA RECALL AND THE VW "CLEAN DIESEL" TDI EMISSIONS SCANDAL WILL NOT BE GIVEN EQUAL PRIORITY BY VW THROUGHOUT THE AIRBAG RECALL AND REPLACEMENT PROCESS. SPECIFICALLY, I WORRY THAT THE IMPENDING BUY-BACK OF OLDER TDI DIESEL MODELS LIKE MINE WILL CAUSE VW TO GIVE THOSE AIRBAG REPLACEMENTS A MUCH LOWER PRIORITY IN COMPARISON TO OTHER VEHICLES THAT REQUIRE A REPLACEMENT. FOR EXAMPLE, STRICTLY FROM A FINANCIAL STANDPOINT FOR VW, IT IS IN THEIR BEST INTEREST TO WAIT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BEFORE COMMISSIONING THE AIRBAG REPLACEMENT OF MY VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE TRUE BECAUSE THE TDI BUY-BACK WOULD NEGATE THE AIRBAG REPLACEMENT ENTIRELY, AS THE VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER BE LEGAL TO OPERATE IN THE US. FURTHERMORE, IF THE TDI BUY-BACK VEHICLES ARE RESOLD IN OTHER COUNTRIES WITH LESSER SAFETY STANDARDS, VW MAY CONCLUDE THAT IT IS MORE BENEFICIAL FOR THEM FINANCIALLY TO LEAVE THE DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS IN PLACE, SINCE NO LEGISLATION WOULD BE PREVENTING IT. I HAVE EXPRESSED MY CONCERNS DIRECTLY WITH VW, BUT THEY ARE UNWILLING TO SHARE ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THE TIMING OF REPLACEMENT PARTS OR TO WHICH ORDER OF MODELS THE REPLACEMENTS WOULD BE DISTRIBUTED. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY ARE ALSO UNWILLING TO PRESENT ANY OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR ME. I DO REALIZE THAT SOME OF MY CONCERNS ARE SPECULATIVE IN NATURE. HOWEVER, GIVEN VW'S UNTRUSTWORTHINESS ACTIONS OF LATE, AND THAT THIS DIRECTLY IMPACTS MY FAMILY'S SAFETY, I FEEL THAT I AM JUSTIFIED IN EXPRESSING THESE CONCERNS TO A SAFETY-ORIENTED AGENCY SUCH AS THE NHTSA. I THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN PROVIDE -- NOT ONLY FOR MYSELF, BUT FOR THE OTHER NEARLY 500,000 VEHICLES/FAMILIES AFFECTED BY THE COMBINATION OF THESE TWO ISSUES. BEST REGARDS, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

(Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, and Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Tiguan, and 2012-2014 Jetta Sportwagen vehicles. In the affected vehicles, debris may contaminate the air bag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the air bag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This contamination may tear the cable and result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: A loss of electrical connection to the driver's frontal air bag will prevent the air bag from deploying in the event of a vehicle crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover over the steering wheel clock spring if the air bag light is off. If the airbag light is on and the steering wheel clock spring requires replacement, dealers will install a new steering wheel clock spring. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987.

Negative 2011 Volkswagen Golf car reviews

The utility of this car is fun thanks to its hatchback nature, but it falls short in a few ways that may be a deal breaker for some. One of the biggest issues is the road noise. It may be the result of being a small hatch or the fact that there seems to be no sound insulation, but the interior of this car can be quite loud. Driving over concrete or rough pavement can be a challenge. Additionally, while the soft materials are nice, the construction is lacking. Interior rattles are abundant, the engine is loud, and the suspension squeaks and creaks. The paint is also quite thin and chips easily. On the plus side, the sport seats are nice, but they can be uncomfortable on long drives. One potential deal breaker is the fuel economy, which is only 25mpg (hwy+city) in a small car. VW can definitely do better in this regard.

Although the car had some shortcomings, it was still a decent vehicle. The manual transmission required a bit of patience when downshifting, but the engine was adequate for most driving situations. The heater/AC could have been more powerful, but it still managed to keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature. The steering could have provided more feedback, but it was still responsive enough for everyday driving. However, there was an issue with the fuel cut off that caused the car to stall in traffic, which was a safety concern. Overall, the car had its flaws, but it was still a reliable mode of transportation.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2011 golf 4 door TDI that I purchased from a central coast dealership on May 30, 2011. When I brought it home and inspected it, I noticed that the engine had moderate corrosion on all aluminum parts. While I'm not entirely sure how this happened on a new car, I just wanted to give you a heads up. It's possible that the protection from the sea water may have been compromised during shipping from Germany. Thanks for listening!

I really want to like this car! It has great mpg and seems to perform well. However, what's holding me back from endorsing it are the seats and fabric. The highly bolstered sport seats are fine, but unfortunately, the waffle-like texture of the cloth has proven to be defective. I've experienced severe fraying and premature wear on the side bolster of the driver's seat as well as the seat back. VW has assured me that they will order new seat covers and install them during the 10k service. It seems that this is a pretty universal problem with all 2010 and 2011 Golfs, as posts all over the Internet indicate. Unfortunately, this fabric has been a nightmare.

I purchased a new 2011 Golf TDI on 4/30/11 and was eager to bring it home. However, upon inspection, I noticed moderate corrosion on all aluminum parts of the engine. While the cause of this issue is unclear, it may have been due to exposure to sea water during shipment from Germany. Despite this setback, I am confident that the issue can be resolved and I look forward to enjoying my new car.

This vehicle is an absolute delight to drive! It's nimble yet smooth and quiet, making for a comfortable and enjoyable ride. The cabin is beautiful and very comfortable, with gorgeous cloth seats that are even nicer than the leatherette in the Jetta. We tested several other models, including the Accord, Fit, Fusion, Jetta, and Impreza, but none of them could match the Golf's nimbleness, road manners, and cabin quality. While it may not be quite as sporty as our MINI Cooper S, it's certainly much more pleasant. We did notice a bit of turbo lag starting from a stop, and the electric steering may be slightly less responsive than the '09 Golf, but neither of these issues were bothersome. Despite reports from previous years, we found that the air conditioning easily tamed 99-degree heat. While it's only day 2, we're confident about the vehicle's reliability and fuel economy, and we're sure it will have great resale value.

I purchased this car as a Certified Pre-Owned vehicle with 20,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it was totaled at around 70,000 miles. This car is a lot of fun to drive, and the 2.5 engine has plenty of torque, although it doesn't quite match up to the GTI. The interior is comfortable and has held up well, with the exception of the headliner, which began to sag when the car was only 4 years old. Unfortunately, this issue was not covered by the warranty, and VW was unable to fix it. Despite this, I have not experienced any other problems with the car, even though I drove it quite hard. If you plan on driving in snowy conditions, I would recommend investing in snow tires. It was a sad sight to see the car being towed away. Overall, I have been very satisfied with this car and would definitely consider purchasing another one.

I used to own a 1973 VW Super Beetle, which was my first new car. Later, I bought a used 69 Ford Thunderbird coupe, which was a real party mobile. Looking back, I regret not keeping the VW longer. It was a really solid, well-built car and fun to drive. In December 2009, I bought a 2010 Toyota Prius, but I ended up trading it for a 2010 Golf 2dr gas AT just three months later. I found that the Prius lacked driving enjoyment once the cool factor wore off, and everything became about gas mileage, which wasn't as good as advertised. They said it was due to it being winter and the gas motor needing to run to run the heater, but they don't tell you that before you buy it. Anyway, I still love my VW. Fahrvegnugen!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my car with you. It's a 5 cyl, 5-speed that I purchased brand new in Oct 2010 from VW of AH, SATX. It's Candy White with a moon roof, steel rims, and a full size spare tire. I've driven it for over 91K miles and it's been amazing! I've only had to replace the tires, windshield wipers, and do scheduled maintenance. I've never had to do any repairs since I bought it, except for a few flat tires. I've driven it mostly on Interstate Hwys and city streets. Thanks for listening!
