2020 Bmw X7 problems
The BMW X7 is a full-sized luxury sport utility vehicle manufactured by BMW. It is BMW's largest and 2nd most expensive SUV in its line-up.
The X7 was first announced by BMW in March 2014. It was officially unveiled on October 17, 2018, with pre-orders being taken online. The X7 has been available at dealers since March 2019.
Launch and development
BMW provided a preview of the upcoming X7 with the showing of the Concept X7 iPerformance at the 2017 International Motor Show in Frankfurt. Production of the X7 started in 2018 at the BMW US Manufacturing Company plant in Greer, South Carolina.
The X7 is built on the same BMW CLAR platform as the G05 X5, however the X7 is taller and wider plus it has been stretched for increased cargo space and third row seating which is standard and more spacious for adults (the X5's third row seating, which is optional, is mainly for children). In contrast to the X5, it is not available with rear-wheel drive, instead using an all-wheel drive (xDrive) drivetrain for all models. In Europe, diesel and petrol engines are available, while the choice is limited to inline-6 and V8 petrol engines in the United States.
The G07 features a self-levelling air suspension system, with a double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension. It can be raised or lowered by 40 mm (1.6 in) and will automatically lower the car by 20 mm (0.8 in) at speeds of over 138 km/h (86 mph). The boot capacity is rated at 326 litres (11.5 cu ft), and 2,120 litres (75 cu ft) with the seats folded down.
All petrol and diesel models feature engine particulate filters and meet the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard. The xDrive50i model is available outside the European markets, while the European markets will get the M50i models.
In July 2019, a pickup truck concept car was unveiled, though not intended for production.

Common 2020 Bmw X7 problems
The 2020 BMW X7 is known for having suspension, electrical system, and transmission problems.
Another common issue with the BMW X7 is air conditioning failure. A 2020 X7 M50i owner with only 10,000 miles reported that the air conditioner failed while on a trip to California. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a compressor and condenser failure, but after the parts were replaced, the air conditioning failed again due to a defective evaporator. The dealer had to order a replacement part from Germany, and the owner was left without air conditioning for an undetermined amount of time.
In addition to these specific issues, there are several general maintenance concerns to keep in mind when owning a BMW X7. These include avoiding repairs, ignoring rust and other decay, getting into accidents, driving in extreme weather, encountering potholes and road damage, and neglecting regular maintenance tasks such as oil changes and tire rotations.
When it comes to reliability, the BMW X7 scores high, with many owners reporting a smooth and dependable ride. However, it's important to keep in mind that every car has its flaws, and the BMW X7 is no exception. If you're considering purchasing a used BMW X7, it's important to do your research and be aware of common issues and maintenance needs.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-22

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car just stopped in the middle of the road and wouldn’t restart. The starter is fried. I didn’t know about the starter recall
AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-16
- VIN: 5UXCW2C05L9
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: The failed component was observed when the Restraint warning icon appeared. There was no accident because the vehicle was taken to the BMW dealership for investigation. There is a warning not to drive because the Restraint system may not work properly. This is a safety issue with no work around to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. After reviewing multiple threads online, it appears that my situation is not uncommon with BMW. I took the vehicle to BMW service and they confirmed there is a fault in the harness that allows the airbag, seat belt and tensioner to not operate properly in the case of a collision. The service advisor admitted they have seen this before and knew how to repair it. The repair is too costly to investigate the harness where the defect in the wiring occurred, so the opt to replace the harness in a parallel manner, which still takes 7 hours and over $2200. The vehicle is only a few months out of warranty and has less than 18,000 total miles. They is no way that the harness experienced normal wear over the years to cause this with such low miles. They attempted to blame the Arizona heat as possible cause, but the vehicle was in Illinois to 2 of the 4 years and while in Arizona, it is parked in my air conditioned garage. Heat is not the cause. This situation is a design defect during assembly or a defective harness at manufacturer. BMW would not accept any responsibility for the issue, which is a safety liability to passengers.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
- VIN: 5UXCW2C07L9
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving on the freeway when due to heavy traffic, it was a stop and go. the engine stalled and on re-started on multiple trials. this created a very dangerous situation for an immediate accident as there were vehicles all around me. the engine stalling continued the next day also and I took my vehicle to BMW for servicing and they diagnosed engine starter motor failure which they then replaced and charged me $1,411.44 on June 27, 2024. NHTSA has issued the following recall stating that the starter motor may fail and overheat. NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V576000 Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING [XXX] I called BMW customer service and they told me that my vehicle VIN number was not on the affected vehicles list and hence, they can't do anything and that I should make a complaint with NHTSA. since the issue with NHTSA recall was starter motor on BMW and since I had to pay to get it replaced before NHTSA issued the recall, I strongly feel that BMW sold the car with a faulty starter motor and that they should reimburse me for my out of pocket expenses to get the stater motor replaced. Please advise. thanks, [XXX] , Tel: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: While driving the sunshade for the moonroof opens by itself. I try to close it but it takes about a minute before the button to work and then it does it again. Around 3 times in a row. The contact stated that over time the failure had become progressively worse, and the steering had become unstable while driving at highway speeds. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V631000 (Steering). ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
- VIN: 5UXCW2C08L9
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Emergency call system malfunction error on the dash. The SOS system is not working nor the GPS or any associated ContactedDrive services as the Internet is failed too. This is dangerous to have nonworking SOS in case of an emergency. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE ON X7 but yet no recall from BMW. The reason of this failure is believed to be faulty installation of shark fin antenna from the BMW factory. Its not sealed properly and water can get inside damaging the TCB unit (corroded or shorted the pcba ) This repair is costing users estimated $3k-$4k if car is just out side of warranty. I believe thousands are affected by this fault that originated at BMW’s factory. I believe in you to do the right thing. Please help. I cannot afford this expensive repair. Expecting - BMW should issue a voluntary recall or at the very least conduct the repair on my vehicle.
ENGINE PROBLEM

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5UXCW2C02L9
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On October 21, 2021 we purchased a 2020 BMW X7 from West Houston Land Rover (AutoNation) in Oct 2021. Purchased extended warranties. Within 3 months: Technicians advised replacing nearly new tires. Car smoked on highway after oil change, dismissed as spilled oil. Nov 28, 2023: Car burst into flames 5 minutes after oil change and passed multipoint inspection. Car burned completely to the ground Escaped unharmed but met with rudeness and dismissal from dealership. GM initially promised help, then stopped communication after seeing evidence. Unacceptable: Horrific experience with fire and previous issues. Appalling service and intimidation tactics (threat of lawsuit for sharing story). We demanded immediate action to reimburse our losses and hold the dealership accountable. We will actively share our story to warn others. When I did mention about sharing this experience with consumers the GM said Autonation would sue us for slander if we put any information about this event online. [XXX] Fire started under the hood (engine) [XXX] (owner) was driving a car that was burning it could have exploded or killed her while driving. Also other vehicles were put in danger while driving near a burning flaming car. I do not know if anyone has reproduced this. the following are researching this by investigating: Geico insurance We were told the dealer also filed an insurance claim (not verified as no info was provided) BMW communicated they would also view the car and do an investigation Police were on the scene Fire dept was on the scene and put the fire out No warning lights, no vehicle warning, just burst into flames while driving home from the oil change I have pictures/video/copy of multipoint inspection performed 5 min before the fire started, as well as a receipt for the oil change/multipoint inspection as well as all communications with the GM. - Summary: The instrument cluster malfunctions - effectively taking the computer dark. This is so widespread they are indefinitely back ordered. Essential car part that is failing too early in lifecycle — still a new car, not a mileage issue Not safe to drive — must have this part Part is on back order indefinitely which is a red flag and makes us think broader systemic issue with part/class of vehicle Need to find a solution that ensures safety of family and recognizes this issue Repeat BMW customer and want to continue to be so but feeling very uncomfortable and vulnerable given the above
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-29
- VIN: 5UXCX6C05L9
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine shut off after a brief warning message on the dash while highway driving. I don't remember the exact words but it was a "drivetrain" problem. After the the message came on the car sputtered 2 or 3 times and then the engine shut down without warning. The car would not re-start. The car was stuck in the middle of the highway dead in it's track, in real danger of being rear ended by oncoming traffic driving at highway speeds. The car was towed to a nearby dealership that said the fuel pump failed. The odometer on the car was at 48,000, well below the typical mileage associated with fuel pump failure.
BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-01
- VIN: 5UXCW2C04L9
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Cross traffic alert system does not work. When backing out of drive ways or parking spots there are no audible warnings or automatic braking. I've almost hit people walking behind my car while backing out of a parking space. Additionally, myself and others have complained about this on automobile forums. You can read one of many threads about this issue here. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1920194. BMW just keeps stating the Cross Traffic Alert system is working as designed. Anyone who even considers relying on this safety feature will surely get into an accident that could cause serious injury or even death if they put any faith in this system.
