2001 Mitsubishi Diamante problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Diamante is an automobile that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2005.

The first series was a hardtop introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989. It went on sale in Japan exclusively in May 1990 and won that year's Japan Car of the Year award. It was created by splicing an extra 6.6 cm (2.6 in) right down the middle of the Mitsubishi Galant, which itself had won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's platform was also used for the sporty Mitsubishi 3000GT.

The name Diamante was derived from the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian word for "diamond" and was adopted also as homage to the Mitsubishi badge which is composed of three diamonds. In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Common 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Mitsubishi Diamante 2001, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Automatic Transmission Failure:
    • One of the most common complaints is the premature failure of the automatic transmission. This issue can lead to significant driving problems and costly repairs. Owners have reported issues such as slipping gears, rough shifting, and complete transmission failure.
  2. Coolant Leak From Heater Core:
    • Another prevalent problem is coolant leaking from the heater core. This issue can result in overheating, loss of coolant, and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly. Owners may notice coolant odor inside the vehicle or visible coolant leaks under the dashboard.
  3. Brake Pedal Pulsation:
    • Owners have reported experiencing brake pedal pulsation, which can indicate problems with the braking system. This issue can lead to reduced braking performance, vibrations while braking, and uneven brake pad wear. Addressing this problem is crucial for maintaining safe driving conditions.
  4. Seat Belts May Not Function Properly:
    • Some owners have complained about seat belts that may not function correctly. Malfunctioning seat belts can pose a significant safety risk in the event of a collision or sudden stop. Issues reported include seat belts not retracting, locking in place, or failing to secure properly.
  5. Random Gas Pump Issues:
    • Additionally, there have been reports of random gas pump issues. While less common, owners have mentioned instances where the gas pump shuts off unexpectedly. This issue can be inconvenient and may indicate underlying fuel system problems that require attention.

These common problems with the Mitsubishi Diamante 2001, as reported by owners, highlight various mechanical and safety concerns that owners of this vehicle should be aware of. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

2001 Mitsubishi Diamante engine

Why did Mitsubishi discontinue the Diamante?

The Diamante was a popular car among buyers who were looking for a comfortable and stylish luxury sedan. It was not as popular as some rivals, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, but it was a good value for money car. The Diamante was discontinued in 2005 due to declining sales.

What engine is in a Mitsubishi Diamante?

The Diamante was marginally larger with improved headroom. It was powered by several engines: the base engine was a 2.5-liter MVV (lean burn) V6, followed by a number of 2.5 and 3.5-liter variants, the 2.5-liter engine sported 175 hp and the 3.5-liter engine boasted 210 hp (160 kW).

Why won't my Mitsubishi Diamante start?

The most common reasons a Mitsubishi Diamante won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-01-21
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,WHEELS,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2001 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE, AND AM HAVING PROBLEMS THAT SEEM TO RUN RAMPANT AMONG THIS MODEL/MAKE. MY HEATER CORE WENT OUT AT ABOUT 100K MILES; MY ABS LIGHT STAYS ON (DUE TO A SPEED SENSOR FAIL), WHICH RENDERS THE WHOLE ANTI-LOCK SYSTEM USELESS; AND NOW MY ANTENNA MAST IS BROKEN. ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS ARE PRICEY TO FIX, AND MOST DIAMANTE USERS I HAVE FOUND EXPERIENCE AT LEAST A FEW OF THESE CONFLICTS. ANOTHER PROBLEM I HAVE SEEN MANY COMMENTS ABOUT IS TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 113K MILES. MY CAR HAS EXACTLY THAT. ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, IT IS WINTER, AND ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ARE MUCH PREFERRED IN ICY WEATHER. I AM STARTING TO SMELL ANTIFREEZE AGAIN, THE WARNING SIGN TO A FAILING HEATER CORE, WHICH CAN LEAK ONTO A TRANSMISSION COMPUTER AND CAUSE IT TO FAIL AS WELL. I AM BEGINNING TO WORRY ABOUT BEING STRANDED, AND EVEN BEING SAFE IN MY CAR. I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN ONLINE ALL DAY READING FORUMS FROM PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR ISSUES (SEE THE FOLLOWING: HTTP://WWW.CARSURVEY.ORG/REVIEWS/MITSUBISHI/DIAMANTE/R76426/COMMENTS/PAGE-5/). SOMETHING MUST BE DONE! *TR

  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 2001 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE. WE HAVE HAD IT ABOUT SIX MONTHS. I HAVE HAD IT IN TO A VERY REPUTABLE SERVICE STATION AND HAVE COME UP EMPTY ON THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM. THE CAR HAS NEW TIRES, THIS OCCURRED BEFORE AND AFTER THEY WERE INSTALLED. DURING MORE AGGRESSIVE TURNING THE CAR GETS VERY UNSTABLE, BAD ENOUGH TO LOSE CONTROL. THE SERVICE SHOP CHECKED OUT ALL THE OBVIOUS FRONT END STUFF ALONG WITH THE THREE BUSHINGS ON EACH FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY. FOR THE MOST PART THE CAR TRACKS STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD AND IS SMOOTH AND TRUE. IT MAY BE DESCRIBED AS A LITTLE SOFT IN HANDLING BUT NOTHING SEVERE UNTIL THIS SITUATION OCCURS. THE SHOCKS AND STRUTS SEEM OK. THE CAR HAS 70,000 MILES? *TR

THE ODORS HAVE EVEN CAUSED RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS. I MYSELF HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERE HEADACHES AND SLEEPINESS DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. THE ODOR AT FIRST WAS VERY FAINT BUT BECAME WORSE OVER TIME. WITH AS MANY PROBLEMS THAT HAS OCCURRED AND THE HEALTH IMPLICATIONS RELATED TO THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT, THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE A MANUFACTURERS RECALL TO RESOLVE THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AND HEALTH HAZARDOUS ISSUE. *TR

NOW, THE FRONT INTERIOR WINDOWS BECOME FOGS UP RIGHT AWAY WHENEVER I TURN ON THE HEATER OR JUST DRIVING. MOST MECHANICS I HAVE TALKED TO ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SAID THAT I SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS PROBLEM WITH THE HEATER CORE SO EARLY. I KNOW OF NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THIS DEFECT FOR THIS (NONE OF WHICH I KNEW ABOUT BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR) I KNOW THAT IT IS DANGEROUS FOR THE ANTIFREEZE TO BE INHALED, AND WITH ALL THE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS OBVIOUS DEFECT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT. THERE IS HEALTH RISKS WITH THE HEATER CORE GOING OUT AND RELEASING THE ANTIFREEZE NOT TO MENTION THE SAFETY CONCERNS WITH THE HEATER CORE BEING SO NEAR IMPORTANT COMPUTER COMPONENTS. *TR

VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-08-24
  • Components: VISIBILITY,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2001 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE WITH 62K MILES. ADMITTEDLY, I AM NOT CAR "SAVVY" RELATED TO THE WELL BEING OF THE CAR. WHEN PURCHASED, THE CAR HAD A "MAPLE SYRUP" TYPE SMELL. ALSO, THE WINDOWS FOGGED UP VERY QUICKLY AND EVENTUALLY I REALIZED THE HEAT TOOK A LONG TIME TO WARM UP. AS I PURCHASED THE CAR IN THE SUMMER, THE FOGGING AND HEAT PROBLEM WAS NOT NOTICED FOR TWO MONTHS. I HAVE NOW REALIZED THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE HEATER CORE. I HAVE TALKED TO PEOPLE WHO ARE CAR "SAVY" AND THEY SAY CARS SHOULDN'T HAVE PROBLEMS WITH A HEATER CORE UNTIL LATE IN THEIR LIVES (ABOVE 120K MILES), IF EVER. AS I DISCOVERED MY PROBLEM, I REALIZE THAT I HAVE BEEN INHALING ANTI FREEZE GAS THROUGH THE HEAT VENTS. I'M WORRIED THAT I WILL HAVE RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF THIS. HAS MITSUBISHI TAKEN RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SEVERE MISHAP? I HAVE RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY PREVALENT PROBLEM IN MOST DIAMANTES. NOT ONLY IS THIS EXTREMELY DETRIMENTAL TO ONES HEALTH, IT'S AN EXPENSIVE FIX. IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR A RECALL HERE? *JB

  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES, MY 2001 MITSUBISHI DIAMANTE HEATER CORE STARTED LEAKING. THE FIRST INDICATION WAS THAT THE WINDSHIELD STARTED FOGGING UP IMMEDIATELY. THIS WAS IN THE WINTER (FEBRUARY, MINNESOTA) AND THE DEFROSTER MADE IT WORSE, DRIVING WAS DIFFICULT AT BEST. I WAS LUCKY IN THAT I WAS CLOSE TO HOME. HAD I BEEN ON THE FREEWAY, IT COULD HAVE BEEN MORE DANGEROUS. A CALL TO ONE OF THE LOCAL DEALERS INFORMED ME THAT THE COST FOR THE FIX WAS OVER $1000. RESEARCH THAT I DID ON THE INTERNET SHOWED THAT THIS WAS A VERY COMMON FAILURE AND THAT MOST DEALERSHIPS PREFER TO CHARGE THE CUSTOMER OUTRAGEOUS BILLS FOR FIXING WHAT IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. NOT BEING ABLE TO AFFORD A BILL OF THIS SIZE, I FOUND A WAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM MYSELF, BUT IT WAS NOT EASY. I'VE FOUND MITSUBISHI IS NOT EASY TO DEAL WITH. MY GUESS IS THAT BECAUSE THEY NO LONGER SELL THIS MODEL, THEY WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CUSTOMERS THAT ARE OWNERS OF THE DIAMANTE. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CAR FROM THIS MANUFACTURER. *NM

Negative 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante car reviews

  1. Olin Collins 2024-09-23

Car is a bit of a rattle box all over. It makes wind noise at all speeds and has poor gas mileage.

  2. Gustave Langworth 2024-06-05

So far, I'm really enjoying my new car! I haven't had any issues with it yet, and I'm hoping it stays that way. I'd rate it an eight out of ten - it looks great and performs well. The gas mileage could be better, but with 210 horsepower, it's not too shabby.

Positive 2001 Mitsubishi Diamante car reviews

  1. Jonas Goyette 2025-01-07

Yes, there is wind noise in this car, but it does not necessarily mean that it leaks when it rains. I also own a 1994 wagon which I love, but I do not appreciate the sedan's habit of eating papers. However, I still believe that my car is better than most others! I was considering the Avalon or Volvo, but ultimately chose this one. Although I think I should have gone with a Toyota with better resale value. I would love to have a hood ornament. The acceleration is nice and the ride is stable even at 120 MPH. The back seat headroom is lacking for my son who is 6'4

  2. Tobin Krajcik 2024-11-19

This car is so much fun to drive! It has plenty of power for those quick passes on secondary roads. Plus, I've found that it gets excellent gas mileage - I average about 25 mpg on the highway. The seats are also incredibly comfortable, making long drives a breeze.

  3. Emerson Armstrong 2024-11-09

The drive and pick up is nice and smooth with sufficient power. The transmission could be more responsive, especially when in traction control mode, but overall it's a great ride. The interior is nice, although the ash tray vs. cup holder placement is a bit awkward. On the bright side, the sound system is excellent!

  4. Milan Weber 2024-10-19

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed driving your car for such a long time! It sounds like it was a reliable and comfortable ride. Even after all those years, it still handled well and had quick acceleration. It's great to hear that the paint job held up so well too. I can understand why you're having trouble finding a car that you like as much. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  5. Emmanuel Swift 2024-10-09

Bought new; black with gray leather. It's still a very handsome car. Goes like the wind and has great mid-range response. In almost 60,000 miles, there has been virtually no maintenance required. Unfortunately, I did experience abnormal tire wear through two sets of Goodyear tires. However, Mitsubishi informed me that those tires were not designed properly for this car, and they wore rapidly. I replaced them with Toyos, and everything is 100% now.
