Mitsubishi Diamante problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Diamante is an automobile that was manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors from 1990 to 2005.

The first series was a hardtop introduced to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1989. It went on sale in Japan exclusively in May 1990 and won that year's Japan Car of the Year award. It was created by splicing an extra 6.6 cm (2.6 in) right down the middle of the Mitsubishi Galant, which itself had won the Japan Car of the Year award in 1987. The Diamante's platform was also used for the sporty Mitsubishi 3000GT.

The name Diamante was derived from the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian word for "diamond" and was adopted also as homage to the Mitsubishi badge which is composed of three diamonds. In Japan, this vehicle was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

Common Mitsubishi Diamante problems

The Mitsubishi Diamante, produced from 1990 to 2005, is known for its spacious cabin, smooth handling, and ample power. However, like any vehicle, it has some common issues that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems with the Diamante is transmission issues. The automatic transmission can sometimes shift roughly or slip, which can be caused by low fluid levels, worn-out transmission bands, or a malfunctioning torque converter. Manual transmissions can also have issues, such as difficulty shifting or grinding gears.

Another common issue is with the engine's timing belt. The timing belt can break, causing serious engine damage. It is recommended that the timing belt be replaced every 60,000 miles to prevent this from happening. Neglecting to replace the timing belt on schedule can also result in poor engine performance or even complete engine failure.

Suspension and steering problems are also common in the Diamante. Worn-out ball joints and bushings can cause clunking noises, uneven tire wear, or poor handling. Steering problems can also occur, including a tendency for the car to wander or drift while driving.

Electrical issues are another common problem in the Diamante. These issues can include malfunctioning alternators, batteries, or starter motors. Some owners have also reported problems with the car's climate control system, such as the heater or air conditioning not working correctly.

Fuel system problems, such as fuel pump failure or fuel leaks, can also occur in the Diamante. Interior issues, such as faulty power windows or door locks, have also been reported by some owners.

In summary, while the Mitsubishi Diamante is generally a reliable car, there are some common issues that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these issues from becoming major problems.

What happened to the Mitsubishi Diamante?

Mitsubishi ceased to export the Diamante to North America after 2004 due to a decline in sales and unfavourable exchange rates. The U.S. market Galant grew in size, and the Diamante was replaced by the upper-end GTS trim of the Galant.

Why won't my Mitsubishi Diamante start?

The most common reasons a Mitsubishi Diamante won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

  • Date Complaint: 2015-04-08
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WOULD NO LONGER PROPEL THE VEHICLE. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND MULTIPLE PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY NO RECALL HAS BEEN MADE. THIS IS A VERY HAZARDOUS ISSUE, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE. SHE HAD TO COAST THE CAR OVER AND WAS RAPIDLY LOOSING SPEED, A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE PROBLEM IS A FAULTY PART IN THE TRANSMISSION CALLED A WAVE SPRING. IN EVERY F4A51 MITSUBISHI TRANSMISSION, THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE. THE WAVE SPRING BREAKS, BYPASSES THE FILTER, ENTERS THE PUMP GEARS AND BREAKS THE PUMP, ENDING IN TRANSMISSION FAILURE. IT IS A COSTLY REPAIR, $1800-$2000. IT IS A FAULTY DESIGN, AND A BETTER AFTERMARKET WAVE SPRING WAS EVENTUALLY ENGINEERED. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL. *TR

Mitsubishi Diamante 2004
  • Date Of Incident: 2011-10-28
  • Date Complaint: 2011-11-15
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE MAIN ISSUE SEEMS TO BE A MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE WAVE/CUSHION SPRING LOCATED IN THE TRANSMISSION. MITSUBISHI HAS DESIGNED THE WAVE SPRING AS A FRAGILE TWO COIL PIECE WHICH HAS BEEN KNOWN TO REPEATEDLY BREAK CAUSING CATASTROPHIC FAILURE IN THE TRANSMISSION. THIS IN TURN POSES A THREAT ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. WHEN THIS WAVE SPRING BREAKS, ACTUAL PIECES OF THE WAVE SPRING MAKE IT THROUGH MITSUBISHIS ALSO FAULTY TRANSMISSION FILTER AND LODGE THEMSELVES IN THE PUMP GEAR, CAUSING THE GEAR TO ACTUALLY BREAK. AFTER THE PUMP GEAR HAS BEEN BROKEN INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION, ALL FORWARD AND REVERSE GEARS IMMEDIATELY STOP FUNCTION AND IN MOST INSTANCES THE VEHICLE SHUTS OFF. THIS COULD RESULT IN POTENTIAL HARM OR EVEN DEATH OF THE DRIVER AND/OR PASSENGER AS THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL MOVING POWER WHICH CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT WITH OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. MITSUBISHI HAS RECENTLY CREATED AN UPDATED VERSION OF THE WAVE SPRING WITHOUT ISSUING A RECALL, WHICH NOW IS A ONE PIECE INSTEAD OF THE COIL SETUP AND HAS A LESS CHANCE OF BREAKING.THIS UPDATE WAS DISCOVERED AFTER THEY I HAD MY VEHICLE IN A TRANSMISSION SHOP WITH A HEFTY BILL TO PAY ($3,700) EVEN THOUGH IT WAS MITSUBISHIS FAULT FOR ENGINEERING A FAULTY PART IN THEIR TRANSMISSION. ALL ONE PERSON WOULD NEED TO FIND OUT ABOUT THIS ISSUE IS SEARCH THE INTERNET WITH THE TRANSMISSION CODE (F4A51) AND THIS ISSUE IS WELL DOCUMENTED, EVEN RESEARCHED BY TRANSMISSION DIGEST (A SPECIALTY MAGAZINE). NOT ONLY IS THIS A LARGE INCONVENIENCE, IT IS ALSO A HAZARD TO ONES LIFE. MITSUBISHI SHOULD RECALL ALL VEHICLES WHICH CONTAIN THE F4A51 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO PERFORM THE WAVE SPRING AND FILTER UPDATE OR REIMBURSE THOSE, LIKE MYSELF, WHO HAVE ALREADY HAD IT DONE AT MY COST. *TR

  1. Johnny Reichert 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2003

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Diamante. When I test drove it, I fell in love with the car. However, I did want to give you a heads up that the insurance rates for this car are quite high, even for a 5-year-old car. It may be worth getting an insurance quote before making a purchase. Additionally, the car gets around 19 mpg on the highway, which can be tough with the current gas prices. Personally, I've decided to trade it in for a car with cheaper insurance and better gas mileage. Despite these drawbacks, the car has a really nice style and runs smoothly. I should note that it doesn't perform very well in snow or slush, and parts and labor can be more expensive. I hope this information is helpful to you!

  2. Justice Weissnat 2024-11-19

    Vehicle year: 1993

Overall, this car has some issues. The paint doesn't seem to last, the seats are coming apart at the seams, and the automatic transmission can be troublesome. Additionally, it doesn't seem to be very aerodynamic, as it only gets about 18 mpg around town and about 20 on the highway. However, there are some positives to consider as well.

  3. Tyshawn Hill 2024-11-18

    Vehicle year: 1992

If Mitsubishi had built the Zeros in WWII as poorly as the Diamantes, many more of our ships would have survived the Kamikaze attacks!

  4. Solon Howe 2024-11-06

    Vehicle year: 1993

This car may have had some issues in the past, but I have taken the necessary steps to ensure its reliability. The engine and transmission have been replaced, the oil pump has been fixed, and the fuel injector has been repaired. Rest assured that this car is now in excellent condition and ready for use.

  5. Kyleigh Williamson 2024-11-01

    Vehicle year: 1995

Its a great car when everything works, but when it breaks down, watch out, parts are EXPENSIVE. And it depreciates like a ship sinking with full cargo.

Bestkept secret. Glad not to see them all over the road. Much better ride than rated. Stylish interior. Incredible sound system. Best bang for the buck. Mitsu didn't market them properly. Why pay much more for Lexus 300.

  2. Wendell Cole 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 1994

I bought this car used a year and a half ago and I absolutely love how it handles. It's a great second car that's also great on gas, averaging about 35 city and 45 on the highway. It has great get up and go and is a real nice looking car both inside and out. I always get head turns everywhere I go!

  3. Malachi Hilpert 2024-11-23

    Vehicle year: 2003

I had a Cadillac Catera Sport previously and I must say that the VR-X is a better vehicle. The engine is smooth and powerful, and it handles great for a front-wheel drive. I did not experience any body roll on curves, and it still has a good ride. The only thing I would say is that I think the steering is a little too light.

  4. Tobin Krajcik 2024-11-19

    Vehicle year: 2001

This car is so much fun to drive! It has plenty of power for those quick passes on secondary roads. Plus, I've found that it gets excellent gas mileage - I average about 25 mpg on the highway. The seats are also incredibly comfortable, making long drives a breeze.

The car was purchased as a program car 12 months ago with 20k miles. Although it chews up brakes and needs to be re-padded every 30-35k miles, we have had no other problems in nearly 140k miles. The engine runs at a high temperature (normal), so it is important to change the oil religiously to prevent buildup. Overall, this is an exceptionally engineered car. We have noticed a nominal hesitation in shifting out of first gear when cold at 138.5k miles, but it is not significant. We were able to get 65k miles out of our first two sets of tires. Both changes were done not because we were low on tread, but for an opportunistic sale at Pepboys. We could have gone another 10k+ miles both times.
